Jennifer: K.C. Food Crawl Faves!
While Julie Andrews may reminisce about cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels, some of my favorite things are accessible right here in Kansas City every day.
When I review a restaurant, the best reviews are handed off to places that manage to do several things right. Continue reading
Jennifer: Filling In The Blanc
I’m not one to be seduced by a menu that reads like a multi page novel.
The more pages a menu has, the more I lose interest. Continue reading

Jennifer: Q And A With Elbow Glace!
Not too long ago Christopher Elbow was a dark chocolate secret among Kansas City foodies.
His creations blossomed at the American Restaurant and eventually he landed a small space in the back of a retail store in the Crossroads. The very first First Fridays were all about the elusive Elbow Chocolates. The secret got out and Christopher set up shop in his own spot inside a sleek space that echoed his minimalist packaging. Today, the First Friday energy is part of the everyday scene at Christopher Elbow.
Inside the store I stand, waiting. Continue reading
Jennifer: A Jewel in Julian Splashes Down in Brookside
My experience at The American Restaurant under chef Celina Tio’s reign was always mediocre at best.
The grandiose nature of the American’s space paired with its unabashedly bold name cast a giant shadow for any chef. Maybe Celina didn’t find inspiration in shadows. When I heard that Tio was opening Julian, a casual joint in the former Joe D’s Wine Bar space in Brookside, I was intrigued. How would she handle the food, the presentation and the atmosphere? The answer: fresh, casual and low key.
Outside the entrance I was greeted by a sad, deflated, rotting pumpkin. My only reaction was the feeling that Julian was too busy putting customers and food first. The rotten pumpkin was a good sign! Continue reading

Is your Christmas wish to indulge in warm, fragrant crepes, exquisite pastries, homemade soups and local coffee in an inviting space just blocks from downtown?

A haven for undercover antics it’s not… Savvy Coffee & Wine Bar opened in the Power and Light District last May to some less than savvy reviews.

Jennifer: Drink, Dash And Drop The Cash….Holiday Mart 2009
This past weekend, most men in Kansas City may have been stuck fending for themselves as wives, girlfriends, mothers and daughters made a pilgrimage to Holiday Mart 2009.
This annual event, organized by the Junior League of Kansas City, MO, is a sort of Burning Man for KC craft lovers, stuff collectors and hoarders. Continue reading
Jennifer: Get Naked, Ra Sushi Lays into Leawood
Although the word “Ra” means nothing – a very similar set of Japanese characters means “naked,” the Orange County Register reports…
The RA concept on the other hand, featuring sushi and Pacific-Rim dishes has landed in Kansas City. Continue reading
Jennifer: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow – the Final Meltdown
Sometimes, as an adult, you feel a tinge of guilt indulging in childish pleasures…
No such guilt exists for me as I indulge again and again in Fresher than Fresh Snow Cones. Continue reading
Jennifer: Pizza Bar, Tossing Out Old, Tossing in New at Power & Light
Outside the former Vinino Bistro in the P&L, people shuffle by, off to an early happy hour or a late lunch…
Inside, fresh faced boys – I can say that because I’m old enough – practice the art of tossing pizza dough. Continue reading
