New Jack City: Shrinking Star Plays Hide & Seek in Snow!
I may actually be the next-to-last subscriber to THE KANSAS CITY STAR on my block…
Better (or worse) yet I also subscribe to USA TODAY and the Sunday NEW YORK TIMES. Guess I’m Old School.
Does all that entitle me to a little TLC by the newspapers?
Not in your dreams!
The ever shrinking STAR comes wrapped in plastic…mostly pure white, clear, or orange wrappings.
Ditto USA TODAY.
Therein lies the problem! Continue reading

New Jack City: Leno’s Prime Time Bomb–You had to see it Coming!
Hollywood’s got to be CHEERING!
NBC’s announced early demise of their 5-month long JAY LENO SHOW experiment in prime time should result in the (re)creation of roughly 970 jobs in Tinsel Town.
How did I come up with that number?
The average five hour-long scripted dramas which Leno replaced – usually Continue reading
Jack Goes Confidential: Michael Cera Scores Subversive Laffs with YOUTH IN REVOLT!
He was good in JUNO and SUPERBAD. But as Nick Twisp, Michael Cera is terrific!
We’re talking the popular coming-of-age screen adaptation of C.D. Payne’s cult-hit novel YOUTH IN REVOLT which may just go down as the quintessential teenage angst comedy!
Cera plays the brainy-son of low-rent parents Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart. He wants to lose his virginity in the worst way—and his chance may be just around the corner.
It all starts to come together when dad drags him on a vacation to a seedy trailer park in Utah. That’s where he falls head-over-heels in love–or lust–with smart, cute, and sexy neighbor Sheeni played perfectly by newcomer Portia Doubleday. Continue reading
Jack Goes Confidential: Leap Year Gives Chick-Flick Genre a Black Eye!
Last summer’s THE PROPOSAL was a great Chick-Flick…
IT’S COMPLICATED currently in theaters is a good Chick-Flick.
LEAP YEAR, opening this weekend, imparts the kind of cinematic numbness that gives Chick-Flicks a bad name.
It also calls into question whether cute and perky Amy Adams is strong enough to singlehandely carry a movie.
Remember that in both DOUBT and JULIE AND JULIA she was Meryl Streep’s backup!
But back to LEAP YEAR, which for all I know could’ve been written by a programmed computer. It’s THAT predictable! Continue reading

New Jack City: Your Next Date with the Twilight Saga is Near
Seems like only yesterday that TWILIGHT SAGA mania swept the local multiplexes.

Upfront, director Guy Ritchie’s dynamic reinvention of old Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes and sidekick Doctor Watson.
To say Ritchie’s overloaded Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic creation would be an understatement.
He turned it into a bombastic sleuth adventure headlined by Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law and their female interests Rachel McAdams and Kelly Reilly.
Baker Street Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: Jack’s choice for BEST PICTURE Here this Weekend!
For my money, here’s the film of the year!
UP IN THE AIR is director Jason (“Juno”) Reitman’s razer sharp and wickedly funny dark satiric-drama about a business model that seems to be flourishing during these tough economic times.
…the DOWNSIZING EXPERTS!
George Clooney stars as hatchet man Ryan Bingham who’s one of the best.
His smooth-as-silk approach leaves a lot of his blindsided Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: Clint Eastwood directs Morgan Freeman to Possible Oscar Honors!
Another potential Oscar contender enters Kansas City’s megaplexes this weekend!
It’s INVICTUS, the historical Bio-Drama which combines the acting talents of Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon with those of producer-director Clint Eastwood.
So what about this title?
Well INVICTUS in Latin stands for UNCONQUERABLE—which makes sense when applied to the story, but none when it comes to marketing this class motion picture.
INVICTUS is the true and inspiring story of how South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, united his country by embracing the national rugby team’s persuit of the 1995 World Cup against New Zealand
Matt Damon takes the role of Francois Pienaar, the buffed, beefed-up and pure muscle blond Afrikaner-captain of the national team—and pulls it off! Continue reading
