Hearne: Say What? Local Jazz Club Diva Fumes Over iPhone 4 Woes
Not all Apples are created equal…
Far from it . Certainly not in the case of this summer’s much-anticipated, fourth generation of Apple Computer’s wildly popular iPhone. Practically upon the iPhone 4’s arrival a blizzard of complaints about its instantly-infamous reception and call-dropping tendencies raced across the globe.
“There had been numerous complaints here on Apple Continue reading

Hearne: Marketing Advice for Dinosaurs; KU Football Groupon Bashers
It’s easy to take aim from the cheap seats…
There’s a growing divide between not just the old school media and the new, but those that perpetuate old school thinking when it comes to marketing and promotion.
Take the recent efforts by the KC Strip trolly system, the Royals and KU Football to market their wares on Continue reading

Hearne: Will Plaza Art Fair Live to Tell the Story?
The $64 million question after the past weekend’s blown-to-bits WaterFire extravaganza on the Plaza:
Will this weekend’s Plaza Art Fair – one of KC’s lowest common denominator “art” happenings but premiermeet and greets – suffer a weather hit?
“I’m going to give you my instant analysis,” says Channel 41 weather wonk Gary Lezak. Continue reading
Hearne: Plaza’s re-Verse Slams it into Reverse
It’s been a long time since the ghost of former Harry’s Bar & Tables founder Loy Edge haunted the Country Club Plaza. A very Long time.
Does “The Bar With No Name” ring any bells?
If not, you’ve still got a couple weeks to check out re:Verse on the Plaza at 618 Ward Parkway. The successor to Edge’s nameless joint is pretty much the spitting image of what Edge first conceived but could not sustain when his restaurant and bar empire collapsed lo those many years ago.
A fellow by the name of James Taylor, or J.T., picked up the peices and re:Verse has had a pretty good nine year fun run.
Until now. Continue reading

Hearne: WaterFire IV; Paint Drying Watch Party, Anyone?
Talk about Middle Class Values…
Are the 50 and 60-something standard bearers on the KC Star’s editorial board really this easily entertained? Do they ever venture out and about and check out something really fun?
I mean besides Miriam Pepper – she totally has a life.
Still one has to wonder about Thursday’s “editorial” touting the snoozefest known as Continue reading
Hearne: Star Scooped on KU Athletics Soaring $93.6 Million Debt
Asleep at the wheel or clued out? You make the call…
The post Lew Perkins ticket scandal era aside, the Kansas City Star sports section has a long history of being deferential to the powers that be in KU’s athletics department. Apart from my column, the Star practically sat out Perkins wildly controversial first two years at KU when he implemented a scorched earth, pay-for-play seating system in men’s basketball and football. The Lawrence Journal World had a hey day covering the dramatic-at-times controversy but the Star dismissed it with a single front-page story with a couple quotes from boosters who said it was no big deal.
Meanwhile back in Lawrence, longtime supporters of KU sports went on the total warpath. Some reportedly literally wrote the university and athletics department out of their wills. Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: Get yer Jason Whitlock Fix, Right Here, Right Now
There’s little to no indication yet that disgruntled, former KC Star sports scribe Jason Whitlock is any closer to morphing his Fox Sports paycheck from pocket change to seven-figures. Any day maybe he’ll magically appear on television broadcasts. Color commentary on Big 12 regional match ups?
But thus far, he continues to choke out the same-old, same-old, standard issue NFL commentary on the cheap.
With a bit of classy Continue reading
Hearne: Lezak Makes Amends for Blown Chiefs Forecast
It’s not often KSHB TV weather wonk Gary Lezak blows a big one. But for the 70,000-plus, soaking wet fans at Arrowhead Monday night for the Chiefs game, that was a big one.
Lezak, a hard core Chiefs fan, told the faithful they would remain dry until after 12:30 or 1:00 a.m. when rain was expected to fall.
Instead, the skies emptied in the first quarter Continue reading
Hearne: Lezak’s Fall Forecast for Chiefs
Clear skies ahead for this year’s Kansas City Chiefs, Channel 41’s Gary Lezak says…
For starters, “We won’t have another game like that,” Lezak says of Monday night’s one-inch drench fest. “I’ll tell you that.”
Now Lezak’s pigskin forecast for the Chiefs: “10 and 6 and a playoff berth,” he says. Continue reading
Hearne: Zona Rosa’s Studio Movie Grill Born to Die
The awful truth about the now defunct, five month-old Studio Movie Grill at Zona Rosa?
It was born to die.
From the get-go, when it opened last May, Studio Movie Grill stood as a testament to poor planning.
The promotional, pre-opening schmooze was a disaster. The seats were bad, the space cramped. Servers continuously scurrying past were distracting. Dining space was tight.
Worst of all, Studio Movie Grill flubbed the floor plan design. It left alternate row’s line-of-sight to the screen obstructed by the heads of moviegoers in the rows ahead of them. May experience watching “Date Night” there was like Continue reading

Star Search: Star Fumbles KU Game Coverage
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents…
When I heard of the KU football team’s miraculous win over Georgia Tech Saturday I went straight to Kansas City’s news source – the Kansas City Star – for the tale of the tape. Had it been a nail biter, a see-saw battle whose outcome was only determined in the closing seconds? I wanted the straight scoop, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Instead what did I get?
A drawn out exercise in overwrought sportswriting by Star sports reporter J. Brady McCollough. A story that actually kept me from the information I sought. For five complete paragraphs it tap danced before giving even the game score.
Surely now, I then thought, the who, what, where, when and why would settle in and I’d learn what happened.
No way. Continue reading
Hearne: Craig’s List Offer; Flesh Flash for Monday Night Chiefs Tix
Been a while since the front page stories about couples battling over Chiefs tickets in divorce cases…
Quite a while, matter of fact.
Today’s Chiefs live in the shadow of the Blackout Age and exaggerated attendance numbers.
But stop the presses, this just in…
A local ran an ad for Chiefs tickets on Craig’s List offering to go topless for tickets to tonight’s Chiefs game.
“Will show you my boobs for two cheap Chiefs tickets tonight – $40 (Kansas City),” reads the ad’s headline. Continue reading
