Hearne: K.C. Strip to Delay Launch, Debut at American Royal BBQ Oct. 1st

This just in from Wild Bill Nigro of Westport and KC Strip fame…

Owing to a tight economy and logistical concerns – not the least of which are technical difficulties with the party trolley’s much ballyhooed Confession Cams – the April 9th launch (April 10th if you’re a Star subscriber) has been delayed.

“We absolutely, positively have to have the Confession Cams working,” Nigro says. “No confessions, no stripping.” Continue reading

KCPD Chief Apologizes to Channel 9 Anchor Kris Ketz, Salutes KCC

When it comes to dodge ball law enforcement coverage, once again, KC Confidential is the place to go…

As evidenced by KCC’s breaking news over the weekend that it was Kansas City Missouri police chief Jim Corwin who shot KMBC TV ancho Kris Ketz lights out early on in of Saturday’s News versus Blues – local media against the cops dodge ball charity game at St. Pius High School.

Even organizer KC police Capt. Rick Smith – Corwin’s teammate – didn’t know until told by KCC hours later, that it was the Big Chief who took out Ketz, driving him from the field of combat early -on in search of TLC and better Band-Aids. Continue reading

Hearne: How do KCMO Police Chief’s (Dodge) Balls Taste? Ask Kris Ketz!

The word is painful…

Just ask Kris Ketz, who was on the receiving end yesterday of a devastating dodge ball blast from KCMO Police Chief Jim Corwin that ended the KMBC TV anchor’s charity dodge ball tournament playing day early in the third annual New vs. Blues (cops against news media) blowout at St. Pius X High School.

“Is he O.K.?” Corwin asked after KK was helped from the field of combat and departed for kinder, gentler pastures.

“Kris Ketz just got hit in right in the head, right square in his face,” said Mo. State Rep Jason Grill, a member of the Continue reading

Hearne: Bud Brown Volkswagen to Chrysler: Thanks but No Thanks

About word that Chrysler will offer to reinstate 50 axed-by-Chrysler dealerships…

No thank-you, says Phil Brown of Bud Brown Volkswagen in Olathe.

“I’ve told people we’re in a better place,” Brown says. “A much better place. We have an exciting line of products with a future, instead of wondering what’s going to happen.”

Translation: There’ll be no going back, Brown is sticking with VW.

“I’ll tell you what I know, I don’t think any of the dealers here in Kansas City applied to arbitration to get their franchises back,” Brown says. “I did not. From my perspective, I didn’t want it back to begin with.

“I don’t think there’s a franchise they could have given back to me. They might offer a franchise at another location if I wanted to apply – but they had already done that.” Continue reading

Star Search Lite: Journal World Scoops Star on KU Ticket Scandal Prelude & Hendrick’s Clues in on Karen Pletz

Busy day, just like lots of readers, so only time to fly through today’s Star at light speed…

Make that yesterday’s Star

If I didn’t see Mark Morris’s byline on Wednesday’s front page lead story about the KU ticket scandal, I’d wonder about the timing of the story. If it got somehow released after the basketball team’s run in the NCAA tourney. As if not to spoil things on KU’s way to another National Championship. Or even now, perhaps, in the hope that the news might get lost in the Sweet Sixteen shuffle. But Mark Morris’s is all about hard news reporting and journalistic integrity.

That said, I don’t recall seeing much if anything in the Star of any significance on or around March 8th when the Lawrence Journal World reported that now-former Williams Fund honcho Rodney Jones had been mysteriously “stripped of his duties.”

Got that? Stripped! Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: Fergie’s Fall, Dudes in Babeland, Green Beads & Fake Boobs

About last night’s Black Eyed Peas concert at Sprint Center…

“It was amazing,” says Midwest Transplant Network marketing and public relations specialist Erin Curtin. “They played all the hits and it wasn’t totally produced.”

Starting with the nasty spill BEP singer Fergie took near the start of the show.

“She fell, then she got right back up and the show went on,” Curtin says. “And it was several songs later when she talked about it.”

Curtin’s live-from-the-concert description of Fergie’s explanation of the spill: Continue reading

Lezak Cites Record Snow, Remedy for Crushed Balls

Snow Season 2010 is in the books…

“Put away the snowblower and get out the mower,” says KSHB weather wonk Gary Lezak. “I think next week we’re going to get up to around 80 by Wednesday or Thursday. So it’s time to start thinking about mowing the lawn; don’t worry about shoveling the driveway.”

That said, snow season 2009/2010 was a record breaker. Continue reading
