Hearne: Waldo Village Ready to Rumble in Former Waldo Pets
Local businessman Steve Sutton has purchased the real estate formerly known as Waldo Pets at 8011 Wornall Road and is poised to unleash what he plans to call Waldo Village.
“This place was built in 1927 and was (originally) a roadhouse,” Sutton says. “Back in the 1920s this was all out in the country and they didn’t have water. That’s the old water tower (on the south end of the building).”
While Sutton’s game plan is still unfolding, there’s plenty of parking out front and in back and the old roadhouse stage – and massive parquet dance floor – hidden to all but the nosiest pet shop patrons – beckons to a live entertainment operator, Sutton says.

Hearne: Will Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon Do the Right Thing?
To do the right thing, or not to do it…
That is the question facing Missouri governor Jay Nixon where a bill to drop the hammer on strip clubs and adult bookstores is concerned. Lee’s Summit Republican Sen. Matt Bartle’s strip show stopper legistlation, restricting adult entertainment businesses in Missouri has passed both houses and awaits signing by Nixon.
Or maybe not…
“We’re waiting to see what the governor’s going to do and if he doesn’t veto it, we’re going to sue the state again,” says Richard Bryant, Continue reading
Hearne: Ex Star Publisher Art Brisbane Talks Times
It’s no walk in the park these days snagging a primo position with an esteemed news organization like the New York Times…
However, that’s exactly what former Kansas City Star publisher Art Brisbane just did. Brisbane landed a three year hitch as Public Editor at the Times, a job that entails reporting on and writing about the 1,000 or so journalists who write for the Times.
“I got a job finally!” Brisbane jokes. ‘It only took me four years.” Continue reading

Hearne: Worlds of Fun Declares ‘Red Shirt’ Synonym for ‘Gay’
What a difference a regime change makes…
This week’s front-page cover ad on KC Exposures Weekly Magazine – the local bible of gay entertainment, news and views – proudly proclaims, Gay Day at Worlds of Fun.
The deal goes down this Saturday, June 19 and is “presented by The Lesbian & Gay Community Center of Greater Kansas City & the Mid-America Freedom Band.“
No biggie, a good time will doubtless be had by all – gay/straight, old/young.
Wasn’t always that way… Continue reading
Hearne on the Street: New Marilyn Maye, Alaturka Show Hours Father’s Day
The freight train that is Marilyn Maye at Jardine’s this week keeps on rolling…
The latest: two last minute shows were added for this Sunday – Father’s Day – at Jardine’s. However to accommodate previously-booked Turkish jazz ensemble Alaturka, Maye’s initially-announced show times have been adjusted. Continue reading
Hearne: Double Trouble, Sellout Sultress Marilyn Maye adds Sunday Shows at Jardine’s
Dues to popular demand – major league popular demand – octogenarian diva Marilyn Maye will add two shows this Sunday to her string of sold out performances at Jardine’s restaurant and jazz club on the Plaza.
The critically-acclaimed Kansas City crooner has been knocking them dead in NYC in recent years. At an age when she easily could be passing her time sucking down umbrella drinks and kicking back shuffleboard butt aboard cruise ships.
Instead the unflappable Continue reading

Hearne: Summertime and the Weather is – Would You Believe Snowing?
A funny thing happened Saturday night on KSHB TV’s television weather channel…
“For at least 10 minutes on their exclusive, all high definition weather channel,” says Shawnee resident Tracy Thomas. “Their giant scroll listed the current (weather) conditions in Kansas City as 18 degrees and snow,” Thomas says. “On the Chillicothe was listed as 9 degrees and snow, Gardner 20 degrees and snow, Olathe 18 degrees and snow. But then it would toggle back to 79 degree without the snow.”
The miscue wasn’t limited to a tiny crawl across the screen. Continue reading
Hearne on the Street: Zack Greinke Puts One Over the Plate at Woodside
Think Zack Attack in a Speedo…
If that sounds like a bit of a stretch – and it does – let the record show that beleaguered Kansas City Royals pitching ace Zach Greinke is now a proud member of Westwood’s Woodside Health & Tennis Club near 47th and State Line.
As you may recall, the club’s swimming scene more-or-less serves as Kansas City’s answer to Las Vegas where the celebration of poolside skin and sin is concerned. As of last summer, The Jones – high above a downtown grocery store near 12th and Main – is Woodside’s hip new challenger. But with limited pool, patio, privy and Continue reading
