Jack Goes Confidential: ‘Mockingjay-Part 1’—Franchise Forges Towards Cliffhanger

hunger-games-mockingjay-trailer-comic-con-2014-lionsgateEven though you KNOW that the movie version of the final HUNGER GAMES book has been split into two parts, it’s still jarring when it actually occurs…

A sigh of disappointment swept through our screening audience.

However it sure isn’t the first time Hollywood has split a major franchise finale into two parts. It happened with, among others, HARRY POTTER and the TWILIGHT SAGA as well.

This cliffhanger type ending gives the studio the opportunity of double dipping—getting twice the bang for their bucks, especially since the movies were filmed back to back.

Hey, it’s called ShowBUSINESS for a reason! Continue reading

Glazer: Kansas City’s Forgotten World Series

Texas Rangers v Kansas City RoyalsYes, it was unexpected…

Kansas City Royals fans hoped the team could maybe get a wild card game. And then, perhaps even one playoff series before it all ended. Instead Kansas City was treated to a month of playoffs and a World Series that went to Game 7 right here at The K – one run short of a world championship. But hey, we’re champions of the American League now and that’s something we haven’t done in 30 years.

BUT WHERE’S THE NOISE NOW?

It was decided there’d be a parade the Friday after the series ended win or lose, but that was cancelled.

I know a parade was in the mix because I got called to help get it done. Continue reading

And tomorrow – Wednesday November 19th at 7:00 p.m. – she is hosting author Anne Lamott at the Community Christian Church on the Plaza to talk about her new book, Small Victories: Spotting Improbable Moments.

Glazer: The Dismantling of the Bill Cosby We Thought We Knew

3225002Actor/comedian Bill Cosby was the modern day Bob Hope

From the late 1960’s through the 1990’s it was all Bill. His comedy albums were a must in the early 70’s. His hit television series “I Spy” in the mid-1960s was a trendy, pre Miami Vice. Cosby followed that up with a number of hit movies and THE COSBY SHOW from 1984 to 1992. It was a family show about a wealthy black man and his ups and downs with kids, wife and family – a huge, huge hit.

However as Cosby aged he began to have issues.

Cosby had been a handsome, brilliant, rich Hollywood star and a ladies man who openly cheated on his wife. His son was killed on a hillside road in Malibu while changing a tire in 1997. Bill then went back out on the road to cheer up America and is thought to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Since President Obama wouldn’t scold Black America for bad behavior and lack of family values and eduction, Cosby decided to try and set the record straight. He wouldn’t accept any Tomfoolery, no sir – get an education, be respectful and fly right was his message.

Now at age 77 Cosby is being accused of sexual assault on at least 16 women. Continue reading

Valentine: Cracking The Political Code

Code

Original art by Mark Valentine

Words take on different meanings when politicians use them…

Sometimes it’s a clever twist meant to put on a better face. Pro-Life sounds so much better than Anti-Abortion. And Pro-Choice sounds much better than Pro-Abortion.

Sometimes the official words seem disconnected from the concepts. How did the expansion of government spying on private citizens become part of The Patriot Act? A stronger central government that invades privacy seems contrary to the Constitution.

Should an assault on The Constitution be branded with the word Patriot?

Sometimes code words are a deliberate smoke screen.

Was it a really surprise when Jonathan Gruber, the architect of Obamacare, said lowering health care costs to citizens was never part of the planning sessions? So they called it The Affordable Health Care Act. Continue reading

Glazer: Thanks Andy, Super Bowl Here We Come!

$T2eC16dHJFwFFZ8hL!tdBR,IfByM!w~~60_35The debate begins…

Are the Kansas City Chiefs the best team in the AFC? Are the Chiefs the NFL’s best? The answer may could be, YES.

With a tough, but impressive win over the world champion Seattle Seahawks today at Arrowhead and a loss by Denver to a team KC beat, the Chiefs are in 1st place in their division and the toast of the NFL.

Seriously, five straight wins. Continue reading

Glazer: We Live in a Kim Kardashian World

1393012222_kim-kardashian-zoomYes, it’s a Kim’s world out there…

Because Kim Kardashian is the World’s best known celebrity. Her new totally nude photos online are everywhere and in magazines, and have been seen by millions. She and her mother, Kris, are brilliant promoters, modern day P.T. Barnums.

“Never give a sucker an even break,” said W.C. Fields.

There’s a name nobody under 30 can tell you anything about. And therein lies the problem. We deserve to have Kim Kardashian as our top named celebrity in America. She’s vacant and sadly so are the young of America for the most part.

Kim has no real talent, an annoying voice, she can’t act and she’s done no movies or real television outside of her own reality show – a show about how silly her entire family is. So she’s being paid millions just to show up and talk about really nothing.

It’s today’s American Dream.

Calvin Sense: Check Out 2004 Movie ‘Crash’ While Awaiting Ferguson Verdict

x0zz5XjT9FkZqoktcb7zGdbx8la

Like everyone else, I’m waiting to hear the grand jury decision concerning the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri…

After the decision is announced I’ll post the real results of what the decision means.  Hopefully the decision will be reached today or soon after.

The movie Crash is the essence of what really happened that day in Ferguson.  By the essence of what happened I mean how the personalities and the lives of the police officer and Michael Brown intersected on that day. Continue reading

Glazer: Critical Weekend for Chiefs & This Week’s Picks

glazeThe big win last week over Buffalo made the Chiefs a top wild card team in the AFC

And a win Sunday over the Seattle Seahawks – last years Super Bowl Champs – would make them something much more, a Super Bowl Contender. That might be wishful thinking, but hey, if the Royals can do it…

If the Chiefs can get to 7-3 their games with Denver and the Chargers will be for the division title. If not they will battle for the wild card.

Can the Chiefs stop Seattle’s big running game and stop QB Russell Wilson?

I think Wilson is over rated. Continue reading

Hearne: Journal World Columnist Error Precedes Embarrassing Tap Dance

sv-headerWhen is a factual error not an error and a correction not a correction?

Answer: In Bizaro World aka the Lawrence Journal World.

When 60 Minutes reporter Lara Logan botched a story about a security contractor who provided a bogus eyewitness account that was almost entirely fabricated of the Benghazi attack, CBS laid a six-month pink slip on her.

However in the case of the “award-winning” Lawrence Journal World’s reporter, humorist and columnist Chad Lawhorn all he had to do was dance.

And dance he did.

Lawhorn may have inadvertently set a Guinness World Record Tuesday for the longest newspaper correction – a 10 paragraph masterpiece – attempting to explain away his front page Sunday story in which Lawhorn reported on a local man claiming to be a former Vietnam POW who had received numerous medals for valor. Leftridge: Fresh Off World Series, Royals Seek Replacement Parts

coveroffseasonWith Major League Baseball’s off season hootenanny officially underway—Ned Yost finished third in AL Manager of the Year voting, btw—it’s time for rumors to start flying faster than insults regarding intellect and/or sexuality in the KCC comments section.

So far, the Royals have been the subject of multiple whispers, most of them awful. For the first time in club history, there’s a chance payroll will exceed $100mil. This is fine news IF they spend the money wisely; speculation seems to suggest that they may not.

But again, these are only rumors and furthermore, we find ourselves in a digital era teeming with exceptional levels of unaccountability. So when @BonerRoyals69 says: “sources indicate Baltimore has offered B. Butler a 3 yr/$30MM deal,” you should probably just LOL at that asshole. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘Dumb And Dumber To’ Lives Down to Expectations

dumb-and-dumber-to-set-09242013-102002Go in thinking stupid and you’ll feel right at home…

In 1994 the Farrelly Brothers took stupidity to new heights—or lows as some might suggest. They called it DUMB AND DUMBER which debuted to an impressive $16.4 million opening weekend.

The farce would ultimately enjoy $247 million in ticket sales and become a cult classic.

Question is, can Bobby and Peter Farrelly strike gold once again by re-teaming Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in DUMB AND DUMBER TO?

The answer is: MOST LIKELY!

Face it, we’ve come a long way since Lloyd and Harry were unleashed 20 years ago.

 Beavis & Butt-Head revival, anyone?

Sutherland: Waving My Freak Flag High -or- Nothing’s the Matter With Kansas

c97993gd198“White collared conservative flashing down the street

Pointing their plastic finger at me

They’re hoping soon my kind will drop and die

But I’m gonna wave my freak flag high, high

                 Wave on, wave on

Fall mountains, Just don’t fall on me

Go ahead on Mr. Business man, you can’t dress like me

Sing on Brother, play on drummer”

  “If 6 Was 9,” Jimi Hendrix, 1968

Tuesday was the Bizarro world antithesis of the late Mr. Hendrix’s take on politics.

For months some of the more developmentally challenged commenters (that would be you, Harley and Mysterious J) have responded to my posts with sensitive and nuanced thoughts like, “Why don’t you just curl up and die, embittered old white man!  Don’t you realize your day is over!”

Well, apparently it isn’t.

There’s still life in this old Republican party yet.  There’s also more to the party than elderly, white straight men, with African-American, Hispanic, women, and gay Republicans being elected throughout the country.  Young people are also in full recovery from their infatuation with Obama and the Democratic Party.  (Nothing like living in your parents’ basement with no job prospects into your 30’s to concentrate the mind wonderfully.)

There are only two things further to say about the results of Tuesday’s election that haven’t been made elsewhere because they are local in nature. Continue reading

Paul Wilson: Ferguson, Mo, Part Deux – The Protestors Make the Rules

rules of engagementThe storm clouds are gathering…

Sometime this week or next, we’re most likely going to learn the fate of Ferguson, Missouri police officer, Darren Wilson. Whether he will or won’t he be charged in the shooting death of Michael Brown. And that set off  weeks of riots across I-70 on the less friendly side of the state in and around Ferguson and St. Louis.

In a strange twist of events, protesters have issued a list of demands, that they are calling “Rules of Engagement” for what will be an almost certain riot.

Among their demands:

48-hour notice in advance of the grand jury decision for riot prep (presumably to stockpile rocks, bricks, bottles, etc)

• Unrestricted use social media and cell phones to shift and focus riots with impunity and without communications interference

• The ability to assemble mobs as large as they want, wherever they want, for as long as they want

Police officers must allow rioters extensive latitude in their actions, while heavily restricting police response Continue reading

Donnelly: Lucinda Williams @ Liberty Hall, 11/7/2014

lucinda-williams_2395947b“Is there a particular song you’re waiting to hear?” I asked a superfan early on in Lucinda Williams’ set at Lawrence’s fantastic Liberty Hall.  “Like, one of her hits?  Or a fan favorite?”

“Uh, she doesn’t really do that,” came the reply.

Indeed.

There were no soaring highs nor plummeting lows at this packed show Friday night.  Just Williams’ crackly, lilting voice, a powerful instrument that demanded the crowds’ attention through a nice, long set and two encores.

This was a mostly seated show, with the floor of the venue lined with folding chairs.  Which was probably a good thing, because the audience skewed boomer pretty heavily, and there were more than a few flannel-lined dudes that needed a seat after staggering their way through the crowd with an armful of drinks. Starbeams: iPhones in Iran, Chiefs in London, Meth in Church

Hearne: Ad Icon John Muller Dies & Much Ado About Nothing KU Win

90111399.jpgx

John & Kathy Muller

Just what I needed, a weeklong battle with a cold/flu…

Consider that my calling in sick after the fact. But I’m back and I’m bad, so where is that tub-O-lard Lazlo dude? I’ll tear him to pieces. He’d best pray our paths don’t cross!

Sound familiar?

Kidding of course, but for a guy who cost Entercom a million buckos, Lazlo sure did shoot his mouth off on Twitter after KCC revealed the behind the scenes on how he and his wife Afentra blew seven figures in after-tax dollars.

So yeah, I’m feeling feisty after spending the day reviewing four day old news, so let’s play a little catch up. Continue reading
