Lefsetz: We Don’t Need Your Stinkin’ Rams

la-sp-stan-kroenke-head-20150914I just don’t care…

I never go to the movies and I’ll never see the Los Angeles Rams play live.

That despite media telling me I need to pay attention. The truth is I’m on my own subliminal trip to somewhere, as is everybody else – it’s the 21st century condition.

Used to be entertainment was scarce. And those who got to play in the sandbox took their jobs seriously. We hung on every word, these artists defined the culture. But today the public defines the culture, Instagram is more important than any movie at the multiplex, including “Star Wars.”

Kind of like Adele’s “25.” Have you heard anybody discuss the music? When was the last time you heard the music? Is anybody even listening? You can dazzle me with sales figures, but on YouTube Adele doesn’t rule. Media tells us she’s the biggest thing in music, but she’s not really that big at all.

I haven’t got any time. Not only do I not make it to the theatre, I don’t watch the flicks when they come to TV. The hype has evaporated and there’s always something new, I can barely keep up with the present, never mind catch up with the past.

As for Stan Kroenke moving the St. Louis Rams to Inglewood, I’ll watch a bit of the playoffs, go to a Super Bowl party, but I’m not dedicating months of my life to sitting in front of the screen watching men maim themselves for life. And the truth is, I’m on the bleeding edge. Boxing died, football has already peaked, the owners and the inane Commissioner have lost touch with the public, they think it’s all about the money, that the audience just can’t get enough. But even Depeche Mode can’t sell out stadiums anymore.

As for movies, chasing foreign bucks they lost touch with the American mind. If I want a comic book, I’ll read one. And I’m an adult and I don’t want one. That’s what happens when you chase the dollar, you lose your soul, and then the public wakes up and walks. Kind of like baseball, so-called “America’s Pastime.”

I’ll argue it shot itself in the foot when it put the World Series on at night. Continue reading

Glazer: Not Close, No Cigar – Wait Til Next Year, Ad Nauseum

tom-brady-92414-getty-ftrjpg_1qz0bci5zpsc01s9tecqo6v6owHe’s Tom Terrific, without question…

Tom Brady is the best NFL quarterback of all time. No argument. He likely will be in his 7th Super Bowl in a few weeks and nobody else is even close to that. The man is nearly 40. So’s Peyton Manning, see a difference?

The Chiefs were beaten on the first series by Brady. If you care to read my story from before the game, I broke all this down. The Chiefs needed to receive the ball and get a lead asap.

They chose not too and Brady sliced them up.

Brady has three receivers that are in tune with his every move and thought. The Chiefs don’t have that. He gets the ball out in like 2 seconds. We don’t have that. Our defense was never really near him. NO SACKS. We had to have that. Our offense doesn’t score much. We didn’t ever get a lead or really challenge Tom and his team. Brady could do anything he wanted whenever he wanted. He’s just that damn good. Oh, was there some air let out of the ball? THAT CHEATER.

Now the Chiefs did all they could.

They had a great year. I think as of today they are the AFC’s No. 2 team. Hey, that’s great. Yes, I think we’d have beat Denver and the Steelers TODAY. We are better. They both have bigger issues than KC. However we played the No. 1 guy and No. 1 team and you just can’t beat superior talent without breaks or a super effort that works. Continue reading

Leftridge: So Long, Farewell, That German Word, Adieu

goodbyeWell, it’s been fun, right?

For almost four years, I’ve said a bunch of words. I’ve told you to watch shows like The Americans and The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead and Better Call Saul and Justified. (Let’s all forget about the times I thought ABC’s The River and FX’s The Strain might be worth watching, because HOLY SHIT.)

I was there when the Royals were miserable bottom feeders, and I tried to get you to hold on, because I saw the promise in Hosmer and Moose and Ventura and Salvy. Hell, I wrote a whole piece about how the key to KC’s success depended on Lorenzo Cain’s health. (Way back in like, ’11, maybe ’12.)

Before the Chiefs signed Alex Smith I said, “the Chiefs should sign Alex Smith.” Continue reading

Glazer: Chiefs Can Win, Game May Be Decided Early

KANSAS CITY, MO - SEPTEMBER 29: Tamba Hali #91 of the Kansas City Chiefs knocks the ball loose from Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots for a fumble during the third quarter at Arrowhead Stadium on September 29, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

Pretty much everyone has jumped in on how the Chiefs could beat the Patriots today…

Sure they could.

However even with their 11 game win streak, a playoff win and solid play, the football / sports /media world still doesn’t t have much respect for our Chiefs. Based on their horrid post season record up until now and being no-shows in big games for more than 40 years except for the 1993 season. They’ve been the K-State of the NFL all too often. A nice little team that doesn’t win any games that matter. They just haven’t.

So is today the day?

It looks like rain and I’m not sure who that helps. Our running game has been just average lately. QB Alex Smith is our key running back right now. And that’s not a good thing if the Pats bottle him up. Because it’s really more critical that the Chiefs can run rather than Pats.

Because Tom Brady has all three of his weapons back and that’s not good.

Spot he can chip us to death with short throws over the middle. Can Smith hit his targets early and get a badly needed early lead for our defense? We might want to take the ball if we win the coin toss rather than defend. We need a lead to put some pressure on Brady because he’s the ‘best’ quarterback in modern NFL history. No question. We all know our pass D has to get to him or make him throw early.

The Chiefs have to put pressure on the Patriots to win, because the Patriots expect to win.

Big difference.

We don’t want Brady coming down the field on us late in the game for a winning score. Our offense has shown little ball control as of late in the 3rd and 4th quarter. We handoff and don’t move the ball well. That keeps our D on the field much longer late in the game and yes they do get tired. Continue reading

Leftridge: Chiefs to Play Football Contest on Saturday

KANSAS CITY, MO - SEPTEMBER 29: Tamba Hali #91 of the Kansas City Chiefs knocks the ball loose from Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots for a fumble during the third quarter at Arrowhead Stadium on September 29, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

Look, I don’t know if the Chiefs are going to beat the Patriots in New England on Saturday afternoon. If I knew, I guess I’d be psychic, and if I were psychic, I would have won the Powerball, and if that would have happened, I wouldn’t be here writing this while I was supposed to be rotating this lady’s tires. I would probably go out to breakfast, maybe someplace nice like Denny’s or Perkins, and when the server asked me if I wanted the bacon or the sausage, I’d say “how about you give me BOTH, babe” as I tipped her a wealthy-guy wink.

But I didn’t win the Powerball and I’m not psychic and I don’t know what will happen in the game. But I can make some guesses. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ’13 HOURS’ — Benghazi Eye-Opener!

13-Hours-trailer“You’re NOT C.I.A.—You’re Hired Help!”

That statement from 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI pretty well describes what the security contractors found themselves in upon their arrival in Benghazi.

13 HOURS is producer-director Michael Bay’s dramatic action-thriller about the attack of the secret U.S. compound in Libya—and the security team struggling to make sense out of chaos.

It is a powerful reenactment of the events of September 11, 2012 at the compound that led to the death of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and others while confusion reigned supreme at the nearby C.I.A. annex.

Security contractors?

Translation: highly skilled military veterans who previously had served as Navy Seals and in special forces and now hired as rent-a-cops of sorts.

Personally, I thought I knew what went down in Benghazi, but only in generalities.

Little did I know the kind of ‘Clusterf***’ it actually was. Continue reading

Glazer: They Could Go All The Way!

42599a_medTwenty-two years of waiting for a playoff win is over…

The Chiefs got a monster victory over Houston, a 30-0 shutout. Now it’s on to New England for the divisional game that will set up the AFC Championship in two weeks.

The big win came at a high price. Jeremy Maclin, the Chiefs biggest offensive weapon, got hurt. He has had issues like this before when he was an Eagle. Maclin got hurt late in the game and was clearly in great pain shedding tears and leaving on a cart. Not good.

However rookie wide out Chris Conley came in and Alex Smith hit him for a touchdown. So he will replace Maclin if needed against New England.

The Houston win identifies and proves the Chiefs have the NFL’s best defense.

With five more sacks and four more INT’s the Chiefs dominated the Texans the entire game. In fact, the game opened with a KC 106 yard kickoff return for a TD. Game over. It was the first playoff shutout in 10 years and the second longest kickoff return for a TD in history. Nice. Continue reading

Glazer: Can the Chiefs Finally Win a Playoff Game? Plus Picks!

imagesHow good are our Kansas City Chiefs?

For starters they’re the winners of 10 in a row. Amazing. They started 1-5 and ended up in the playoffs. Amazing.

Yet they are 25-1 to win the Super Bowl. Not so amazing.

The Chiefs have one of the NFL’s worst post season records. They only won playoff games after their Super Bowl win in 1970 twice. That’s over a 45-year period. Wow. So naturally everyone is a bit skeptical. Even Chiefs fans.

Is this team really better than just decent? Are they very good?

My answer is yes, they are a good team. They’re balanced on both sides of the ball. We have a few issues of course.

This team needs Alex Smith to be a top notch quarterback in the playoffs to make it to the AFC Championship game. Can he do it? I think he has it in him.

However, his best day going deep was that loss to the Colts two seasons ago when our defense was at the high school level. We have not really seen that Alex Smith since. B]So bombs away, Alex. He is great at short throws and short runs for first downs.

The fear is if we get behind he can’t put this team on his back and score.

He has shown flashes but not enough.

The Chiefs have relied on getting leads and sitting on them while their defense fights off the other teams trying to come back. So far so good. However there have been nail bitters nearly every week the last month. KC not only has won their last four road games they have covered the spread playing better on the road than at home.

Now Houston. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘THE REVENANT’–A Brilliantly Raw Movie Experience!

DiCaprio-619-386On February 22, 2015 Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu stood before Hollywood’s beautiful people at the Dolby Theater to proudly accept the ‘Best Director’ Oscar for his quirky movie BIRDMAN—which would eventually be crowned ‘Best Picture’ of the year…

Now, just one year later, there’s a good chance history might repeat itself.

Inarritu’s latest cinematic offering is the biographical American western revenge film, THE REVENANT.

Set in 1823 and inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is a powerful and epic tale of fur traders and hunters on an expedition through uncharted wilderness always under deadly attack by hostile Indian tribes.

A powerful adventure of betrayal, revenge and the confirmation of the human spirit.

But most of all it is Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass giving the performance of his career in this most intense tale of survival that you have probably ever seen in a motion picture.

One scene will blow your mind! Continue reading

Glazer: Alex Gordon Signing Should Return Royals to World Series

OAKLAND, CA - JUNE 26: Alex Gordon #4 of the Kansas City Royals looks on from the dugout against the Oakland Athletics in the top of the second inning at O.co Coliseum on June 26, 2015 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)

One of the most popular Royals players ever is staying with the home club…

In a surprise move, Alex Gordon just signed a four year $72 million contract with the team. In today’s money driven, contract sports world it’s quite unusual for a player of Gordon’s caliber to stay with his original team for an entire career. Especially in a smaller market like Kansas City.  We don’t know what Gordon’s other offers were, but they were definitely out there.

Gordon and his family have spent nearly 10 years in Kansas City and he loves it here.

And he made it clear yesterday that he believes this team can go back to a third World Series this summer. In  yesterdays interview Gordon also explained his close ties to Royals general manager Dayton Moore.

“Dayton has always been honest with me and believed in me,” Gordon said. “I just couldn’t see me wearing any uniform but a Royals uniform.” Continue reading

Lefsetz: Aretha Franklin’s Carole King Tribute a Nod to a Bygone Time

4566ca6f91f2d09a0aef663345d04105It brings tears to your eyes…

What kind of crazy fucked up world do we live in where the two musical highlights of the year were provided by septuagenarians?

That’s right, Taylor Swift and Adele did not reach Mt. Everest in 2015, theirs were financial stories propped up by commercial pop and Grade B songs. The peaks were reached by Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin.

Dylan put a cap on the old and brought in the new at the Grammy Awards, wherein he gave a speech that proved not only that he still had it, that the same guy who cut “Positively 4th Street” still operated at an elite level, far outpacing all his so-called competitors. And that he’d been paying attention all these years, that he truly knew which way the wind blew. It was a live event that if you were at it, you’d never forget it and if you weren’t you won’t ever really understand.

Kind of like Newport. You can read about it, but to be confronted with limit-testing individualism unexpectedly is to feel fully alive, knowing that you had an intimate moment with a god.

And then, at the end of the year, came Aretha. She truly made us feel like a natural woman, even if you were a guy. Continue reading

Glazer: KU Win Over OU Completes Area Sports Trifecta

kansas_city_rocks_classic_round_sticker-r2e27ac35dd6845b48dac3470ae3c9e64_v9waf_8byvr_512I’ve talked Chiefs, I’ve talked Royals, now I need to talk Kansas Jayhawks basketball…

In a classic basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas won in triple overtime by a score of 109-106. There were more than 20 lead changes. Even Dick Vitale called it a classic many times before the triple overtime.

Until recently, Kansas basketball really was the area’s only elite sports franchise for decades. Then Bill Self coached this college to two national title games and one championship over the last 10 years. Self has won 11 straight Big 12 titles. That may never happen again.

Self is ‘The Man” when it comes to area coaches.

The last few seasons it seemed as if Self was coaching just to win the Big 12 rather than looking to get to the Final Four. KU has the name so of late they are often ranked as a top seed or a 2 seed with teams that were not as good as his past groups. During this time Self has had several one and dones that didn’t really help his cause towards a final four.

This year is different. Continue reading

Hearne: Donald Trump, Sex Slaves, Mad Max, Granny & Border War Crossing

2015_12$largeimg29_Tuesday_2015_013043377Face it, the times they just aren’t a changing, like it or not, it’s a brave new world out there,….

Take the annual Gallup Poll results that showed President Obama as the country’s “most admired man.”

Politics, nut job and terrorist shootings aside, the country overall is doing better – certainly the economy is anyway – and the credit and/or blame tends to be ascribed to the man at the top, which accounts for Obama.

But Pope Francis and Donald Trump in the No. 2 slot?

Then again, who knew (or remembered) that Trump finished in the Top 10 most admireds four other times?

And in keeping with some of the other strange days of 2015, did you catch the pic of the three million year old former World War II “sex slave” women South Korea and Japan finally made restitution to? Seriously, couldn’t they have dug up some older photos from back in the day to garnish the story instead of the current one where the women looked like Egyptian mummies?

And what’s with movie critics picking Mad Max: Fury Road as Film of the Year? Continue reading

Glazer: Chiefs Looking Good for Playoff Matchup with Houston

Unknown-1San Diego nearly helped KC win the division Sunday…

Had the Chargers beaten Denver, Kansas City would have won the division. However that ship sailed when Peyton Manning entered the game in the second half. He was, well, Peyton Manning. Short throws that set up big runs, and he took the Broncos to a win and the No. 1 seed.

The Chiefs played pretty well against the Raiders until the end of the game and won 23-17.

It shouldn’t have been that close. The Chiefs had some weird penalties at game’s end to keep the Raider drives alive and a muffed field goal kept as well.

The Chiefs were crisp in the first quarter with nice throws from Alex Smith to Jeremy Maclin, Travis Kelce and a couple others. The running game was on fire, including Smith’s runs.

Then the Chiefs offense slowed and an Alex Smith interception that went back for a touchdown made Andy Reid go to his run the clock out mentality and we got saved by a great defensive performance with a blocked punt leading to a safety. Continue reading

New Jack City: Jack Poessiger’s 2015 Movies Wrap

maxresdefaultThis is not another Top 10 list.

It’s just my thoughts, surprises and disappointments experienced while spending countless hours watching movies in dark auditoriums this past year.

Sure I fall for the Hollywood hype sometimes only to be pleasantly surprised when the film turns out to actually deliver or be better than advertised.

Yet far too often I’ve headed to screenings only to have my perceptions and anticipations shattered—and experienced the loss of three hours of my life that I’ll never get back.

Here then my 10 biggest cinematic disappointments of the past year from a major studio. (Note that movies are not listed in the usual 1-to-10 fashion but by their opening dates in Kansas City.)

* (April)- Kevin James’ lame and sorry Las Vegas trip follow-up in “PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2”

* (May)- Walt Disney’s ugly sci-fi duckling called “TOMORROWLAND” which seemed to even embarrass George Clooney who starred in it.

* (May)- “HOT PURSUIT”—An unfortunate sidestep for Reese Witherspoon as she dragged herself down to the level of her co-star Sofia Vergara.

* (May)- Director Cameron Crowe’s all-star turkey of immense proportions called “ALOHA” with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murry and Alec Baldwin. (Boy, did the audiences ever smell this one coming!)

* (June)- “ENTOURAGE”—It worked great on HBO but failed miserably on the big screen. They just couldn’t bring back the magic.

* (June) Seth MacFarlane’s “TED 2” with Mark Wahlberg.

Maybe Seth was just trying too hard. The laughs were totally forced. Continue reading

Glazer: Lackluster Chiefs Continue to Win

19452896-mmmainFor the third week in a row the Chiefs played it safe – nearly too safe…

The team’s new game plan seems to be to get a lead near mid game then HOLD ON with its defense. They’ve had almost no second half offense at all with Oakland, Baltimore and now Cleveland. A bunch of handoffs, a couple very short throws, Alex runs a couple and then they punt.

Will this work in the post season? Doubtfull.

Johnny Football ran all over the Chiefs in the second half.

OK, so the Chiefs clinched a playoff spot.

And the Steelers who many considered the second best team in the AFC fell to the lowly Baltimore Ravens. Yes, the team KC beat last week. So unless the Jets who upset New England lose next week, it’s set. Wild cards will be Chiefs and Jets. Well, unless the Chiefs beat Oakland and Denver loses a game, then the Chiefs win the west. So things are still a tiny bit up in the air. Continue reading

Valentine: Ho, Ho, Ho!

Original art by Mark Valentine

Original art by Mark Valentine

‘Twas the night before Christmas

And all through Crown Center

The shops were all closed and it felt just like winter

The Mayor’s tree was lit in a holiday glow

And the ice rink was empty, but ready to go.

The kid was in bed dreaming of Santa and elves

And we were sipping the Single Malts we hide on top shelves.

The presents were wrapped, tomorrow the day.

We come as we are then we all go away.

The pictures will freeze little moments in time

And when we look back it will form a straight line

From our past to our future, both yours and mine.

Find the joy in each other. It’s the one thing that’s right.

Now Merry Christmas and to all a goodnight!

Glazer: ‘Predator’ Star Sonny Landham Loses Right Leg in Accident

I’ve been close pals with actor Sonny Landham for more than 30 years…Billy_Predator

We met in acting classes in L.A. in 1982. My partner in crime Don Woodbeck was still alive and we all hung out. Sonny introduced me to actors Mickey Rourke and Gary Busey and we all did the scene. After I was released from prison in 1988 Sonny was the first to welcome me back to LA and showbiz. He took me to the Academy Awards that year. We worked out together and were best friends. He always had me on his movie sets when he was working in movies like “Lock-Up” with Sylvester Stallone.

He became both a friend and a big brother.

Unfortunately, this past Wednesday Sonny – now living in Louisville,Ky. – was in a bad car wreck. It was raining and his car slid into a pole, was totaled the car and Sonny’s right leg had to be amputated. He called me when he woke up from the surgery.

Of course I’m devastated by the news. Continue reading

Hearne: Star Wars Movie War Between AMC, Cinetopia Goes Galactic

TFA_thumb_b1c49964Mystery solved…

What movie theater in its right mind would pass on showing the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens? That’s a rhetorical question, btw. No theater would be dumb enough to not show Star Wars, let alone cede the exclusive screening rights to its closest rival.

Yet that’s exactly what KC based AMC Theatres did at it’s recently redesigned Town Center 20 in lofty Leawood, Kansas. Worse yet, it took a pass on the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie and did not screen the Tina Fey, Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters.”

Put another way, AMC’s flagship movieplex – the closest to its world headquarters – did not screen the top three grossing new releases for the pre Christmas holiday weekend.

All because of a questionable policy decision implemented by its former CEO to not play what in the movie biz is called “day and date” with nearby rival theaters. Questionable, in that AMC has been accused of (and is being sued for) unfair business practices by some of its rivals.

In this case, the ritzy, new Cinetopia Overland Park 18 was the benefactor of AMC’s “largess” by playing all three of the top, new movies, lead by the record shattering, $248 million grossing new Star Wars. Continue reading

Glazer: Superstar T.J. Miller Returns to Stanford’s Saturday & Sunday

tjmillerbighero6It seems like only yesterday that T.J.Miller was doing his first headline weekend at Stanford’s at Village West in the Legends…

He’d just done a couple movies including the surprise hit Cloverfield and he was doing She’s Out of Your League which also was a comedy movie people loved.

T.J. has family in KC so he wanted to headline our club.

At the time he was not headlining comedy clubs, but we said OK and the rest is history. Miller went on to become arguably the biggest film and TV comedy star today.

His credits are endless.

We saw Miller in big films like UnStoppable, Get Him to The Greek, Rock of Ages, Yogi Bear, and too many others to name. Then he did several comedy central series like Mash Up. Today he stars in HBO’s hit series Silicon Valley. In just the last year he also had a major role in Transformers 4 with Mark Wahlberg. T.J.’s Big Hero Six movie won best animated movie at the Academy Awards. His other film, How To Train Your Dragon was also nominated and his voice became so well known he was selected to do a number of major television commercials (you see him now on three different ones).

And on this Christmas week he’s returning to Stanford’s. Continue reading
