Today: The Heart Sickening Tale of the Sale of One of KC’s Most Iconic Mansions

How the mighty have fallen!

It took four long years, but one of Kansas City’s most famous mansions has finally sold. There’s a "sold" sign in the yard of the former home of deceased local real estate tycoon Jack Frost at 8636 Mission Road.

The six bedroom, four bath, 8,440 square foot, 83 year-old, "storybook French Norman Castle" had everything a buyer could want, including real estate taxes in the neighborhood of $27,000 a year and a pricetag of $1.6 million.

Which trust me, was a steal. More on that in a moment.

"It is spectacular," says one real estate agent familiar with the property. "If you put this house in Mission Hills it goes for $3.5 million. It has a greenhouse with a brick floor that gorgeous. Brick patios It looks like it’s in a forest; it’s amazing.

"It has a drawbridge that goes over a creek and a gazing pool or something – it’s fabulous. It has a guest quarters and the landscaping is outstanding. It’s got a library with bookshelves – I’m looking for a secret door there – but they wouldn’t put that in the listing. It looks like it has a walk-in fireplace. It’s elegant.  You could be serving a king by that fireplace. It’s really stunning."

Speaking of stunning…

If $1.6 million for a Prairie Village home sounds like a lot to you, think again!

When the house went on the market – for the first time in 40 years the listing says – it was offered at $5.8 million.

That’s right, $5.8 million!

“You’re not going to believe what happened,” says the agent. “Oh my god, you should see the history of this puppy. At one point it was listed for $5.8 million in 2007. Then it went to $4.9 million in January of 2008. Then in December of 2008 it went to $3.9 million. Then in the summer of 2009 it went to $3.5 million. And in the fall of 2009 it goes to $3 million. And on June 11 2010 it went to $2.5 million, and then on June 23rd they listed it at $2 million.”

Still with me?

“Then in December of 2010 it went to $2.2 million. And then – this is weird – on February 8, 2011 it went to $1.6 million. Then on February 19th they put it back up to $2.5 million. Then in March, Prudential took over the listing, but then on May 23rd they put it on at $1.6 million and it sold.”

To put that in perspective, that’s a 72 percent-plus freefall.

My girlfriend’s house in Topeka, for example, appraised four years ago at $185,000. At which point she had $50,000 in equity in it. Were she to sell it today at that same plunge rate, she’d receive a mere $50,000 for it.

Oh yeah, and a note from her mortgage company telling her she owed them another 85 grand!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a tale of the sorry state of today’s residential real estate market.

Starbeams: Parlez Vous Gold Cup? Dresses to Di For

The U.S. National Team played in Livestrong Sporting Park last night in Gold Cup action.
It’s nice to see soccer catching on because I was running out of places in town where I’m the only person who speaks English.

*******

The Princess Diana exhibit set a new record for ticket sales here. Union Station officials were hoping to sell 75,000 tickets but more than 105,000 people took the tour. Including 3,100 people the day Will & Kate were married.  Kate can hardly wait for the exhibit to return to England so she can RECYCLE SOME OF THE DRESSES.

*******

The most expensive home in America sold yesterday.  TV producer Aaron Spelling‘s home in Los Angeles went to a wealthy heiress. The asking price was $150 million. It sounds like Maria Shriver has a pretty good attorney.

Donnelly: Goalscorers Struggle to Finish, US Slips Past Overmatched Guadaloupe

American flag at LIVESTRONG Sporting ParkBased on the results, Tuesday night was an overwhelming success.

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park was sold out for team USA‘s 1-0 victory over Guadaloupe.

Many players, coaches and media observers that were getting their first taste of Sporting KC’s new home were thoroughly impressed with the stadium and atmosphere that it provided for this crucial Gold Cup game.

"It was fantastic," said Landon Donovan when asked about the new stadium.  "I think everybody involved should be commended. The crowd was great, they were energetic. The stadium, the locker room and facilities are beautiful. I definitely hope we come back here."

"It’s a great stadium," said head coach Bob Bradley.  "I think all of the players were really excited about every part of it. The stadium is really well done. It is first class in every way. The atmosphere inside of the stadium, it is great to play in front of a crowd that is there for us, a U.S. crowd.”

And, hey, the US will now advance to the next round where a very respectable Jamaican squad will try their luck at knocking off the Yanks.  So it’s all good right?

Not really…

First of all, we need to remember that the US was playing GUADALOUPE.  Do you even know where that is?  And on our home soil no less.  Don’t get me wrong, they have a respectable team.  And by respectable I mean that the US should have put up 5 or 6 goals.

But instead, Guadaloupe nearly took the lead in the opening few minutes of the game.  The lead!  In the first couple minutes, a misplayedJozy Altidore in Gold Cup at LSP corner bounced through the US box and deflected right to the foot of one of their players who beat US keeper Tim Howard but couldn’t beat the crossbar.

OK, credit where credit’s due.

Jozy Altidore responded and lashed a wicked 30 yard near post blast to give the stars and stripes its only goal of the night a few minutes later.  On the assist was Michael Bradley, son of Bob, who seemed to touch the ball about a million times over the course of the night.  His work rate and ability to create space for himself and others was the most impressive feature of the night.

But for the rest of the game, despite dominating possession the whole game and recording 21 shots to Guadaloupe’s 4 or 5, the US simply could not buy a goal.

And it seemed everyone was in on the act, as Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, and Chris Wondolowski all missed fairly routine – even point blank – goal scoring opportunities.  Most egregious of them all was Dempsey’s non-effort in the second half.

As US players streaked into the opposing penalty area, the ball was played across the goal line, catching Guadaloupe’s keeper out of position.  Dempsey found himself alone with the ball at his feet, mere inches from the goal line.  But instead of burying the ball in the net with one touch, Dempsey took a touch to collect it and casually tried to dribble the ball across the goal line.  By that time a hustling defender swooped in to clear the ball away and American fans were left scratching their heads.

Why did Dempsey try to get cute?  The all-important second goal would have sealed the deal, advancing the US to the next round for sure, and letting off a little pressure after so many other near misses.

No idea.

But if I were Bob Bradley I would’ve ripped Dempsey off the field then and there. Six inches from the goal line is no place to get cute.

Maybe they were a little tight after falling to Panama last week, which made this game a must win (or at least a must tie).  Or maybe it was just the luck of the draw.

Is Bradley concerned about the atrocious play in front of net?  Not really.

"Sometimes that’s the way the game works," commented Bradley after the game.  "There may be a little bit of frustration that you didn’t finish the game and finish some of those chances. But it’s still a shutout and there’s positives to go forward."

I guess all’s well that ends well, but these boys better put forth a better effort this Sunday when they take on a motivated Jamaican squad that is undefeated so far in the Gold Cup.

Hearne: Movie Critic Robert Butler Pre Spanks Ex Boss, The Star

Who’s minding the movie store at the Star?

One has to wonder. Especially after reading exiled Kansas City Star movie critic Robert W. Butler’s story last week about the demise of the founder of the AMC Kansas City FilmFest. A report that came out a handful of days before the newspaper’s watered down version of the tale appeared on Sunday.

"Longtime KC film fest leader steps down," shouts the Star‘s headline. "Jubilee founder Fred Andrews cites health reasons; board promises to continue his mission."

Hold it right there!

I’ve seen some news coverups, but this baby takes the cake.

"Andrews announced his resignation earlier this month, citing uncertainties about his health after a cancer diagnosis two years ago," the Star‘s story says. "Now the organization can move forward ‘without having to possibly scramble if my health situation were to deteriorate,’ he said in an interview."

Bollocks!

The Star‘s version of the story is a complete coverup for what it undoubtedly knew had happened.

Andrews was unceremoniously forced to walk the plank, as reported by Butler on butlercinemascene.com.

"Andrews said he recently was approached by a long-time associate of the Jubilee ‘who told me I needed to step down. I’d have preferred it to be handled differently, in a conversation rather than an ultimatum,’ " Butler reports. "A few hours after the meeting Andrews elaborated, saying that he was told ‘that I needed to step down or be voted out’  and that if not for his health he would have fought his ouster."

As recently as mid-late April KCTV 5 quoted Andrews as being excited about this year’s filmfest.

"Andrews is fighting cancer, but said he feels as healthy now as ever," reads KCTV’s report. " ‘I’ve still got cancer,’ he said. ‘It’s not going away. So this is one way of dealing with it.’ "

Butler may have fallen asleep during the dramatic battle scenes in Transformers 2 but he sure as heck didn’t doze off and miss the battle scene in this local movie biz soap.

As have readers of the Star’s vaunted Sunday A E Section.

Will the newspaper come cleanand run a correction or followup story to avoid getting off on the wrong foot with its spanking new publisher? We’ll see.

Hearne: And the New Publisher of the Kansas City Star is…

From the Idaho Statesman – the Idaho Statesman? – Mi-Ai Parrish!

That’s right. Forget about the dude part. Blessed mother of god, they hired a hottie!

Here’s the newspaper’s resume if you will:

"Parrish had been deputy managing editor for features and visuals at the Minneapolis Star Tribune when promoted to the publisher’s post in Boise, Idaho.

"Her journalism career has included work at the San Francisco Chronicle, Arizona Republic, Chicago Sun-Times and Virginian-Pilot."

The $64 million question: will touchy-feely Star editor Mike Fannin be able to keep his mitts off of her?

He’d better!

Sources say Parrish comes to the Cowtown happily married!

Besides she’s 40, probably too old for the Fan Man.

Hearne: Star Poised to Announce New Publisher!

This just in….

Any minute now – any second even – the Kansas City Star will announce the name of its new publisher. The dude who will replace the dearly departed Mark Zieman. The guy who will decide the fate of embattled Star editor Mike Fannin.

A gentleman who – surprise, surprise – is coming in from outside the newspaper, from another market.

Stay totally tuned!

Star Search: Star Sidesteps Geezer Pleaser Card With Groupon-like Daily Deal

Ah, the incredible lightness of daily deal making…

It’s one thing to be late to the party. Like a year and a half late. Quite another to stagger out of the starting blocks with a weak-kneed effort. Yet that’s exactly what the Kansas City Star did Monday with the launch of its new Groupon-like, dealsaver.com daily deal.

Affiliated – as once rumored – with Groupon?

"It’s not," says one local daily deal expert. "It’s their own – their own misguided product."

Instead of leading off with a big name, kickass, gotta-have-it deal, the newspaper ginned up a retread with inner city, specialty movie exhibitor Screenland.

"$17 for 2 tickets, 2 soft drinks, 2 large popcorns at Screenland Theatres ($36 value)," it reads.

Sound familiar? It should.

Groupon did the exact same deal four months earlier for less money.

"$16 for Two Movie Tickets, Two Large Popcorns, and Two Large Sodas," reads the Groupon deal.

Worse yet, the Star’s  hair removal deal today had ZERO takers around 11 a.m.

Let’s take a gander at the bottom line…

In 24 hours last February, Groupon sold 1,112 Screenland deals. In approaching a day and a half, the Star had 144 sold.

"I wonder how many people the Star has on their email distribution," wonders the source. "Groupon has more than 300,000 names."

With a half dozen or more dealmakers flooding the market, some say the Star is not only late to the party but behind the curve on the direction deals are headed.

As in, the recently announced Groupon Now!

With Groupon Now! buyers enter their location and choose the type of deal they’d like to see. Sushi in downtown Chicago, a three star hotel room off Times Square. Groupon Now! has yet to launch in Kansas City yet but is expected to shortly.

"It’s not going to be so much about daily deals. It’s going to be up to the minute deals. Like if you’re a restaurant that’s half full or doesn’t have hardly any reservations on a Tuesday night, you can sit there and eat it or do a discount deal that will affect your business that night. You don’t have to wait three weeks."

The $64 million question: What will become of the geezer-pleaser Star Card?

Glazer: Hangover Star to Splash Down Next Week at the Legends!

Bryan Callen‘s worked about as much as any actor who’s NOT a household name.

He’s a co star of The Hangover 1 and 2 will be at Stanford’s next week doing stand up. Which is how he started his career. And he’s very sharp doing it, as well.

It’s Callen’s second time at Stanford’s in 10 years. He’s been scheduled several times but had to cancel due to film or TV work. I can’t list even a third of his work but go to IMDB (International movie data base) and check out all his credits.

But it’s his recent work in both Hangovers that’s finally put him at the top of the game.

Together they will gross nearly a billion dollars worldwide. Bryan plays the wedding chapel owner in the first film and in Hangover 2 (out now) he is Bangkok strip club owner Samir, an even larger part.

He’s also in those damn shaving commercials on TV every five minutes and he started his big move as a member of Mad TV in 1998. The next year he got a lead role on HBO’s Oz. Non stop from there. Movies like Old School and Bad Santa. A series regular on Fat Actress. Several appearances on Entourage and How I Met Your Mother. And he’s currently on Pretend Time on Comedy Central.

So come out and see Bryan Callen next week at Stanford’s. You will be glad you did.

Hearne: Marilyn Maye Hospitalized, Father’s Day Week Shows @ Jardine’s Canceled!

This just in…

Legendary KC crooner Marilyn Maye was rushed to a hospital earlier today and her weeklong series of sold-out shows at Jardine’s for Fathers Day week – slated to start tomorrow – will have to be rescheduled.

"I’ve got bad news," says Jardine’s owner Beena Brandsgard. "Marilyn’s in the hospital. The shows are all canceled. She has three kidney stones."

While kidney stones can extremely painful, they’re generally not life threatening – the biggest risk factor being dehydration.

That said, the fabled KC cabaret singer just celebrated her 83rd birthday in April.

"Her manager Helen just called five minutes ago and said that Marilyn woke up and she had kind of a problem," Brandsgard says. "She had three kidney stones and went to the hospital. I mean, tomorrow is the (first) show. We’ve got the food organized and everything. We were pretty much sold out all week and on Father’s Day. Now I’ve got to book musicians and everything."

Brandsgard expects to announce replacement dates for Maye’s shows as soon as possible.

Donnelly: That’s More Like It! Sporting Regains Touch in Thrashing Of Dallas

Did I call it or what?  Midfielder Graham Zusi celebrating vs FC Dallas

Mere days after I praised Graham Zusi as the only Sporting KC player with a dangerous long shot, he puts in one for the ages from about 50 yards out, and another on a strike from about 20.

Yes, Zusi made me look good this time.

But Zusi wasn’t the only player to find the net – Aurelien Collin and Luke Sassano tallied one each – as Sporting regained their scoring touch in a 4-1 beatdown of FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas.

Despite using another odd lineup due to injuries (Bravo, Smith), national team call-ups (Auvrey, Rocastle, Espinoza), and suspensions (Nielsen, Harrington), SKC played one of their most complete games of the season against the second place team in the Western Conference, who entered the match with a 10 game unbeaten streak.

Sporting struck first in the 28th minute when Zusi created a bit of space for himself and uncorked a low drive that beat former KC keeper Kevin Hartman and found the side netting.

But Dallas evened the score a few minutes later when promising youngster Brek Shea made the Sporting defense look silly by dribbling through three players before sending Chance Myers the wrong way and sliding the ball past replacement keeper Eric Kronberg.

That was the only shot on goal that Dallas would record all night.

Again, the defense stepped up big time and denied Dallas from putting together much possession in SKC’s end.  Over and over, Collin and Matt Besler anticipated through balls and cut them out before they could penetrate the back line.

In the first few moments of the second half Zusi played a long corner to the far side of the 6 which CJ Sapong redirected perfectly back across the goal to find a slashing Collin who pushed the point blank shot into the net.

Then Zusi struck again.

After being awarded a free kick near midfield he caught Hartman out of position with a driving, knuckling ball that whizzed into the upper corner of the net.  The goal was certainly part keeper error, but make no mistake, the ball that Zusi hit was just about perfect.

And for the nail in the coffin, little used sub Luke Sassano arched a high looper over an oncoming Hartman who was caught in no-man’s-land.

"I’m very happy," commented Sassano.  "My first job is to help the team defensively, when I can help them score a goal that is even better. I hope I score a lot more and I’m very happy."

Is Sporting KC hitting their stride?  That’s four games in a row without a loss now.  And even though the lineup had a lot of new faces, the team was fluid and focused.

Manager Peter Vermes certainly seemed pleased after the game.

"Were undefeated since our New England game which is four straight games now and we have been right there," said Vermes.  "There is not a lot that has gone our way this season but credit to the guys because they have been committed. They have not got off the beaten path. They’ve stayed focused and committed on what we are trying to do and believe in each other and that’s a great thing."

The next match for Sporting is this Friday night at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park against San Jose.  The game starts at 7:30.

Hovick: Have a (Clothing Optional) Happy Father’s Day, Courtesy of Midland by AMC

Statistics don’t lie…

Dads get the stiff end of the stick – plenty of puns intended – on their national holiday

Mom, Mom, Mom
Is the normal cry in the household
And Mom is who a Dad really wants to hear from when the kids are sick
Mom is who Dad really wants to hear from when the kids need a ride to anything and he’s busy watching sports Or when Dad could be away from the house at a sports bar with other Dads
Mom is who Dad really wants to hear from when his daughter at any age wants to have the talk
You know, when her body starts to change
Go ask your Mother, is the standard Don’t Disturb Dad line
But when the kids want money – who they gonna call?
Uh, Dad

Dads are simple
Dads need food, beer, sex and a nap in front of the television
Not necessarily in that order
Dads can cruise through life with a simple focus on one of the above but Mom has to shut off the TV if she wants Dad to multitask

On Mother’s Day, Dads tend to spend a lot to insure they get the freedom they want for the rest of the year
It’s insurance and Dad likes it when Mom owes him
Yes. Dads are simple but they also can be devious, sensitive creatures with their needs

So let’s try and think what to get Dad for Father’s Day for a minute
In many homes, Dad is the bread winner. So Mom might think twice about spending too much on Dad to make sure Dad knows Mom’s being frugal
But of course Dad wants wants a present also

Dads need stuff too
But Dads need different stuff depending on where their Dad Cave happens to be in the home
If the Dad Cave is in the garage, you can lavish your Dad with tools, beer for the garage refrigerator, beer neon lights, beer wall clocks, or calendars with (Mom approved) hot chicks in appropriate attire for the kids and or neighbors to see

If the Dad Escape Pod is in the basement, then of course any and all beer related items plus the calendar still applies. You can always throw in stocking stuffers for Dad like souvenir beer bottle openers or a trash can with a wide opening so Dad can always hit the three point shot during action movies. Devious but simple, Dad might ask for a chick flick DVD to have on hand so Dad can watch it with Mom as a romantic beg for forgiveness evening in his pod after he forgot something Mom asked him to do

Dads need out of the house stuff, too
Concert tickets, Ted Nugent on July 13 or Whitesnake on August 9 at the Midland would be a perfect gift for Dad

Tickets to see the Royals, T-Bones, Sporting KC and / or hopefully Chiefs tickets are also coveted gifts most Dad’s desire
Going to Dinner with Mom and the kids is okay on Father’s Day, as long as Dad gets to pick the place and nobody whines about the menu

Or a date night with Mom on Father’s Day is fantastic as long as Mom understands she’s part of the menu and clothing is optional

Happy Father’s Day!

Hearne: Former KCTV News Director Weighs in on Katie Horner Exit & Bonnaroo

Maybe it’s just me…

But I strongly suspect that lots of people in local TV news would be at least somewhat surprised to learn mild-mannered, former Channel 5 news director Don North just got back from spending three days with his wife and friends partying like banshees at the rock fest known as Bonnaroo.

Eminem, Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, Buffalo Springfield, The Strokes, Henry Rollins, Lewis Black, Bela Fleck, Loretta Lynn, Scissor Sisters, String Cheese Incident and about a million other bands. A four day camping and music wilding, spread out on 700 acres in Manchester, Tennessee.

Forgive me in advance for asking, but how much dope did North smoke on the three day rapture?

"Oh, three or four bags," he jokes. "I’m not sure how anybody could inhale anything.  It was hard enough to get a good gasp of air because of the dust."

Seriously though, what possessed the button-downed news director (who brought Kansas City Katie Horner and Dana Wright) to go AWOL from the coat-and-tie world and asshole to elbow with tens of thousands of stoners and party people?

"My mom lives there," North says. "I mean, if you’re from Manchester, Tennessee and you don’t go to Bonnaroo, what good are you? And the best part is, we didn’t have to sleep on the ground. We stayed at my mom’s place."

North’s favorite band: "My Morning Jacket," he says. "It was a terrific show. The problem is I had to leave yesterday so I didn’t get to see Robert Plant and the Band of Joy."

How about did he get to swim nude in the great outdoors?

"No, it was too dry. There was a dust storm all the time."

North is currently news director at WFLA TV in Tampa.

His take on the pending ouster of Horner at KCTV?

"Well, Katie was one of the best people I ever worked with and I’m sorry to hear what’s going on. But I’m sure she’ll find something and be fine."

Starbeams: Too Big & Ugly for the Plaza? The Four Day Murray’s Work Week

THIS JUST IN:  Over half the residents of Kansas City are considered too big and ugly to be on the plaza.

A dam broke around noon Monday near Hamburg, Iowa.  Now all we need is an earthquake for the trifecta.

Glazer: Miami’s LeBron Needs to Find Something Besides Basketball-Boxing Maybe

So I asked LeBron James if he had change for a dollar and he gave me back 3 quarters..

He looked all around and said to me, "Man, I just don’t have a fourth quarter."  And so he didn’t. In one of the most shocking finals in recent NBA history, the NBA’s biggest, new name was exposed as being way, way overrated.

The numbers tell the story.

In three straight championship games, James was absent when the game was on the line in quarter number four. So were most of the Miami Heat. The new world champs, Dallas, ran them off the court in Miami’s home, no less (The game was really never in doubt). Simply put Lebron, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh had no clue what to do to win. NONE. Nobody on their squad wanted the ball in the last minutes of the game. They gave up with about five minutes to go. Knew they were beat by a much better ball club.

MVP Dirk Nowitzki had a tough first half with only 3 points but smoked Miami in the more important second half. He ended with 21 points and had the team on his back most of the way with strong help from Terry and Barea. KU star Mario Chalmers scored 18 points and will clearly be a starter with the Heat next year. He also established himself as THE name in the NBA of recent KU grads.

Dallas won because they are the better team.

They’re built like the LA Lakers – one star and a veteran three point man in Jason Kidd (who is like Derek Fisher). Dirk is the matchup with Kobe of the Lakers. They play together and push each other. This of course is more the Lakers of the last three seasons, not this year’s Lakers.

Will Dalllas be back next year, don’t count them out folks.

Will Miami be back in it again next year? Not the way LeBron’s been playing.

He’s built more for another sport. Like football or boxing, not really basketball. He’s kinda tough, moves quickly straight ahead and over you. His shot is good, but not great. He is not graceful and often loses the ball or misfires. And he lacks confidence when it matters.

Same as when he was in Cleveland.

LeBron is far from the best in the NBA right now. This was a GIANT fall from grace. HUGE FOR HIM.

To make matters worse, Lebron said this after the game how he felt about the people who wanted him to lose, "Hey that don’t bother me. Dem people have to get back to their lives and I go back to mine. I can do anything I want. Anything, I am happy. Dem gots to be whatever da are in real life."

Meaning, "I am very rich and famous and you guys go back and work in the coal mines."

Brilliant comment, James.

In some ways it’s true, but damn. I don’t dislike James. He is a big talent, just half baked. I’m sure he could be the heavyweight champion of the world in boxing. Just not basketball.

Today: Time to Put an End to Unnecessary Police & Liquor Raids in Westport

In the words of Rodney King, "Can’t we all just get along?"

That’s how Westport businessman Bill Nigro feels about the recurring weekend night raids on bars and restaurants in Westport spearheaded by KC Liquor Control and backed by uniformed members of the Kansas City Police force.

Totally unnecessary, Nigro says.

Task forces of police and badge-toting officials descend on local establishments during prime time weekend business hours, demanding to examine their liquor, food and health licenses. All the while, scaring off customers, interrupting the flow of business – and in at least one case – not allowing a customer to enter the business.

"I know the doorman at The Union of Westport has had to produce his liquor card for either police or Liquor Control at least three times in the last three weeks," Nigro says. "How often do you get asked to see your driver’s license? Places in Westport get checked almost every month. They want to see our business licenses. They want to see employee’s liquor cards. They want to close us down. I don’t understand."

Instead of making a dramatic show of force over minor paperwork, why not just check the records? Nigro asks.

"They’ve got computers, they should be able to punch a few buttons and see if we’re behind on our licenses," Nigro says. "Instead they come in on a Friday or Saturday night when things are the busiest and we have to pull the licenses down off the wall so they can look at them.

"Saturday night an entourage of liquor and police officers – maybe eight people – were going door-to-door checking primarily bars, checking licenses. And at Union, a patron tried to walk in and the policeman at the door said he couldn’t. So then, I walked in and one of the policemen knew me so they didn’t say anything. But it’s bullshit – I got mad – and that’s why I went in. They have absolutely no business stopping somebody from walking into a place unless there’s a crime happening."

If Liquor Control has to do the license checks live, "Why don’t they do it on a weekday afternoon if they want to waste their time?" Nigro says. "Or they could have somebody sit on a computer and see who’s behind on their license, then give them a courtesy call instead of a raid with six to eight people coming into your place on a Friday or Saturday night and making a spectacle.

"Two months ago they did it with 10 people at 10 p.m. And I saw them in Martini Corner that same night at Martini Corner’s prime time. And I said to one of the vice agents, ‘Hey, did you catch anybody?’ And he said, ‘Not yet. But it’s still early.’

"I mean, everybody that’s there is wondering what’s going on. That maybe they shouldn’t come in. Why the show of force? They could do this with one officer. What are we gonna do, attack ’em? Instead of wasting eight people, they could be patroling the parking lots and the perimeter of the entertainment areas where the thieves and opportunists are out robbing people. Why not go after the real crime instead of us?"

Nigro’s bottom line: "I’m sick of it. We’re the ones paying the taxes and the guys from the city coming in shaking us down own 70 percent of the biggest competitor we have ( the Power & Light District). Why do we get the hassle and the P&L gets the money?"

Glazer: Younger Grrrls Keep Rollin’ ‘Cross My Mind

Here’s how it went down…

Comedian Rich Vos and I had just finished doing radio in Westport at 9:30 AM Friday. And we had some time to kill before an appearance on KSHB TV near the Plaza. So I’ve made a habit of taking my out-of-town comics to breakfast at the Classic Cup. I like it and they get to check out the Plaza. Most of the talent we bring in is from LA and I want to show them that our Plaza is nicer than Beverly Hills.

Hey, it is.

So we pull up in front of the Cup – it’s always hard to find a place to park – and as we get out of the car, a black Mercedes pulls in next to us.

"Hey man, do you think my car will fit behind yours?"

It’s two hot girls with dark hair, maybe 25 or so. Sweet. Rich is very married and not interested in meeting girls, but he likes seeing me in action. And I said, "Rich,  was that chick hitting on us?" And he said, "No."

I said, watch the pro, baby.

I went back over to the ladies and I said, "Where you two going?" And they said, "Where are you going?"

Next thing you know, we’re going into the Classic Cup together.

They sat by us and immediately were on their cell phones texting. Turns out they’re both bartenders. Then I learned something. I asked where they worked. And the one by me – a tall, dark-haired 27 year-old American Indian anmed Liz, said, "Dude we are top notch bartenders, see the Mercedes she bought with her own money? We work at all the top spots in town every week, like all good bartenders."

Then it struck me that she was onto something.

With only a handful of clubs and bars that are busy anymore – and mostly only weekends – the good bartenders move around from one hot spot to another. Rather than just working at the same place.

So it’s THE JONES STORE pool on weekend days, Sol Cantina in Martini Cortner on Friday nights, The Point on Saturday night and on and on.

"Don’t your good bartenders work all over?" Liz asked. It occurred to me my top people do. Guess it’s old fashioned to be at just one bar and loyal.

Lke when Kelly’s in Westport used to be a happening place. The times have truly changed.

I asked if they had boyfriends.

"Nah, we have like the one main guy and meet, you know, different guys here and there. You know, and kinda talk to them too."

Translation: Have sex with them.

So it’s happened! The girls have figured it out. They’re doing what men do and have done.

They have one main man and spin the rest.

Both said marriage doesn’t work – none of their married friends were happy, NONE. By the way, it sounded as if they were wild. And to be honest, I think they’re kinda nice girls by today’s standards. I was impressed with their clothing, talk, car and attitude.

Hey, they had good jobs. Made good money. Said they weren’t strippers and were being honest.

I did get the Indian chick’s number and we’re suppose to hang out this week and, you know, uh, talk.

Donnelly: Sporting KC’s Defense Holds Up, But Offense Continues Slide

Did you all know that LIVESTRONG Sporting Park opened this past Thursday to host Sporting Kansas City’s first home game of the season?

Okay, I’m going to get this out of the way so we can talk some soccer: the stadium is awesome, the pitch looks great, and for me, it’s a dream to not have to watch the team toil away in a minor league baseball stadium or cavernous Arrowhead, both of which preclude having a proper sized playing surface.  The grand opening featured a sellout crowd of 19,925, a streaker in a cow costume (who scored the only goal of the night), an appearance by Lance Armstrong, Chad Ochocinco, a stealth bomber flyover, and a slot on ESPN2’s Primetime Match of the Week

Now, let’s talk about Sporting’s 0-0 draw with the Chicago Fire

The first half saw Sporting dominate possession and create a few good scoring chances, though none that connected.

"We were all over them," said manager Peter Vermes of the first half.  "Credit to them, they absorbed the pressure. We had a couple chances early and even in the last couple minutes of the first half with the Omar (Bravo) header. But we had a lot of good chances in the first half."

As has been the case so far this season, the offense simply lacks a certain touch of creativity when it gets into the final third.  Sporting lacks a player who can deliver that final, penetrating ball in behind the defense, as well as that player who is consistently dangerous from 25 yards out.

That’s a combo makes it tough to score goals.

In the 15th minute, though, SKC had a decent chance when Kei Kamara beat his man down the right flank and delivered a nice, low cross in front of the net.  A streaking Omar Bravo looked like he attempted to play the ball, but simply missed it.  Graham Zusi was there on the other side to clean it up and fired an easy shot into the back of the net for what looked like the first ever goal in LSP.

The huge HD board flashed briefly with the GOAL!! celebration, before it was realized that the linesman had his flag up.  Bravo was offside and the goal was disallowed.

I’m not quite sure how Bravo managed to miss that ball, either.  He had a couple other curious plays throughout the night.  For example, toward the end of the first half when he got into the penalty area behind his man on a long through ball/cross in the air.  Instead of getting his head on the ball he attempted to chest it into the goal.  The resulting effort was weak and went straight into the Chicago keeper’s hands.

Zusi played a solid game throughout the night, and almost scored that coveted first-ever goal again in the 28th minute, when he took nice lash at a ball from about 25 yards out that barely missed the top corner.

I like Zusi in the lineup and hope he continues to get playing time.  He works hard, combines nicely with the attacking players, and is really one of the only players who has a dangerous long shot.

As the first half ended Sporting seemed in firm control of the game, but with little to show for it.  I was hoping that Vermes would inset a few subs straight away to inject some different element into the match.

For example, Kei Kamara looked exhausted, as he has often times this season.  Maybe it’s the travel back and forth to play with his Sierra Leon national team, but he has seemed a step slow for a while now.  I don’t understand why he got the start, especially with the energetic CJ Sapong available, who entered in the second half and made an immediate impact winning a few headers and holding up the ball up front.

The second half saw more open play than the first, with both teams getting a few good chances.  Perhaps this was due in part to fatigue, which looked like it had set in for SKC as well as some of the Chicago players.

In the 67th minute, Sporting keeper Jimmy Nielsen received a red card after committing a tactical hand ball that, honestly, he had no choice on.  Chicago played a deft through ball that fell a few yards outside the penalty area, perfectly to the feet of an oncoming attacker who had broken through the center of Sporting’s defense.  In order to deny the goal, Jimmy was forced to punch the ball away, and he received the mandatory red card.

"He had to make a decision after he committed himself to come out and he did what a goalkeeper does," said Vermes of Nielsen’s red card offense.  "He put his hands up to try to make a save and unfortunately he was outside of the box. It was a good call by the official and the linesman was in a good position to make the decision."

Sporting KC’s Omar Bravo had his legs taken out from under him by the Fire’s Bratislav Ristic in Thursday night’s game at Livestrong Sporting Park on a play that KC coach Peter Vermes thought should have resulted in a penalty kick. Down to 10 men, Sporting played admirably the rest of the way to salvage another point. That’s three games in a row now – and another shutout – their second of the season.  Though it was dicey for a moment there.

With Nielsen out for the red, backup Eric Kronberg came in and endured a scary moment when he mishandled a long, looping shot that deflected back to an oncoming Chicago player who blasted the ball off the woodwork.

That would have been an utterly depressing way to lose the game.

"I thought Orr (Barouch) took it well," said Fire manager Frank Klopas of the missed opportunity.  "I don’t think he’s a guy that was thinking about it too much. He came and instinctively took the shot. The ball hit the post and went out. We are a team that has created goals and I think we just have got to start finishing or get lucky and have the ball hit the post and go in."

Sporting should have had their own chance as well, though.

Toward the end of regulation, Omar Bravo was taken down in the box, but the referee didn’t bat an eye.  Bottles of beer started raining down from the Cauldron in protest of the referee’s inaction, and Bravo laid on the turf for several minutes.  Replays show that Bravo clearly was fouled.

But that’s the way it goes sometimes, and at least Sporting hung on to get that one point for the draw.  After the game, even Bravo was making no excuses.

"I don’t want to get into it that much because that is part of sport," said Bravo of the non-call.  "This is soccer. It happens, and everyone makes mistakes. All I know is that my back hurts a lot."

SKC next plays Sunday night at Dallas.  Let’s hope the defense can keep posting shutouts long enough for this team to regain its scoring touch.

New Jack City: Tracy Morgan Rant Fuels Firestorm & Apology!

Did another comedian just crash and burn? Sure sounds like it!

Industry insider Web site Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood reports that about five years after Seinfeld star Michael Richard‘s racist rant at the Laugh Factory, 30 Rock’s Tracy Morgan has come under fire for bashing gay people.

There’s no videoof Morgan’s rant available (yet), but Deadline Hollywood today reported that in his stand-up routine last weekend in Nashville Morgan said, "All this gay shit is crazy and that women are a gift from god and that Born This Way is bullshit."

"Gay is a choice," Morgen allegedly said, adding, "God don’t make no mistakes….Gay is something kids learn from the media and programming and bullied kids should just bust some ass and beat those other little fuckers up that bully them, not whine about it."

Morgan also said that "if his son was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not (mimicking in a gay, high pitched voice) or he would pull out a knife and stab that little nigger to death."

Morgan then added that "He didn’t fucking care if he pissed off some gays because if they can take a fucking dick up their ass…they can take a fucking joke."

To say Morgan’s remarks created a firestorm is putting it mildly.

Morgan’s post show take?

"I want to apologize to my fans and the gay and lesbian community for my choice of words…I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context."

No reaction yet from NBC which airs ’30 Rock.’

Hearne: What To Do While You’re Not Watching Soccer @ Livestrong Sporting Park

For starters, you’d best not smoke – unless you find yourself  on the roof of the owners box (more on that later)

With more than 11,000 season tickets sold – versus 3,000 and change last year – there’ll be lots of fresh faces soaking up soccer and sun in KCK this summer. But given the sorry state of the team’s play, they’re going to need to find something to do.

I mean, besides watching soccer.

Not a problem. You can shop. The Wi Fi at Livestrong Sporting Park is top notch, so be sure not to forget to bring your smart phone. There are concerts with local bands before the games (don’t miss the Beautiful Bodies in October). The restrooms are garnished with his and her soccer silhouettes

Sporting Club is also a founding partner with TheCoolTV multicast television network out of Lawrence. It will provide attendees who sign up (for free) as members "unique opportunities to access exclusive music content and events."

So there’s that.

Now let’s take a look at what fans will be finding as they seek to get away from the lackluster play on the pitch.

"You can’t smoke out here, sir," shouted a SKC staffer several yards outside of the entry portal to the stadium. "No sir, you have to go across the street to smoke. They don’t want you smoking on the property."

Wow.

Thanks to the LiveStrong anti-cancer Smoking Nazi’s, you can get busted for smoking 20 yards or more away from even entering the general stadium grounds. Unless it would appear you’re living large atop the owner’s suit overlooking the field.

"They were all up on the roof over the owner’s box before the game before the starting lineups were announced smoking cigars," says one media observer at the game. "But they said there would be no smoking anywhere on the property when they made the LiveStrong announcement."

Let’s talk concessions. Which while interesting are far from cheap – I mean, inexpensive.

Sixteen ounce (plastic) bottled domestic beer, for example, goes for $7.75 per. That’s about six times what you’d expect to pay at local retail outlets.

"You can get a six pack of Bud Light or Miller Light or Coors – any of the three domestic beers for less than $8," says Jen at K-7 Liquors in Shawnee. And a 12-pack of Moosehead at Gomer’s goes for not much more ($9.98).

A giant bag of peanuts at $4 seems reasonable. As does the $4 cotton candy and snow cones.

However $4.50 for bottled water – the same price as Gatorade – and "regular soda" at $5 seems pricey.

Burgers go for six bucks, chicken tender baskets $8, hot dogs $4.50, bratwurst $5, chips $2 and "bottomless" popcorn $8. A "cheese cup" to dip your pretzels in is priced at a buck. Dippin’ Dots $5. A pair of pork tacos $6 and that bacon-wrapped hot dog (all aboard for KC’s next appearance in the "fattest cities" poll) goes for $8.75.

Mixed drinks – two per person max – are $8.25 each and stop, along with beer sales, at the 80th minute or before at the descretion of management (in other words depending upon if pissed off "Cauldron" fans are peppering the field with trash like last night).

"Oven fresh pizzas" – Minsky‘s to be specific go from $5 for cheese to $6 for pepperoni to $7 for a "Papa Minsky." A garden salad chaser will set you back five buckers.

A half slab of "Smokehouse Ribs" runs $10, with pulled pork and beef brisket sandwiches @ $6.50 per and $2 for beans and/or slaw. BBQ nachos – whatever they are – are priced at $7.50. And, stop the presses, a refreshing cup of hot chocolate costs $2.50.

But all of that hardly constitutes shopping, does it?

When it comes to gear, SKC has it way better covered than the Wizards of yesteryear.

Every imaginable article of clothing short of thong underwear (did I miss something?) is there for the asking. As are "car flags," wall clocks and even trash cans! yes, trash cans. The only thing missing were the pricetags.

So how much exactly for the SKC trash cans?

"I think they’re about $20," said the third SKC store staffer I asked, having radioed unsuccessfully for confirmation. "If I remember correctly."

Glazer: Nick Wright & I Were Wrong About LeBron. Really Wrong!

My pal, 610 Sports major player voice, Nick Wright and I called it wrong on LeBron

We both felt he was maybe the third or fourth best player to come to the NBA, behind Michael Jordan and Kobe. But the Miami Heat got jacked again in Dallas by the real "new" name of super-super-stars Dirk Nowitzki.

Starting now a household name all over the planet.

Yes, Dirk is nearing the end of his long career. But he’s stopped by to let the world know that it’s Dirk’s, NOT LEBRON’S world right now.

Nick did a few one hour "defend LeBron James" spots on 610 over the last couple weeks. It was such a hot topic I couldn’t even get in on the hot line.

I wanted to back him up.

I too felt James would show up in the end and kill it – take down Dallas. With the Mavs now up 3 games to 2 that is not likely. It looks like they have LeBron’s number. The guy just kinda leaves the scene in the fourth and final quarter.

In two straight games at Dallas, with James saying, "This is my biggest game, OF MY LIFE," the biggest name in the NBA couldn’t save his team. Yes, he was double teamed on defense but the Heat did the same to Dirk and he did whatever he wanted when it mattered.

In game two at Miami, the Heat had a 16 point fourth quarter lead with just over five minutes to go. Until LeBron and Dwayne Wade (the other Heat super star) gave it all back and lost the game.

I can say this with total confidence, MICHAEL JORDAN would never have let that happen.

At home with the Bulls in the NBA finals, no chance. So this was my first thought that James might just be, well, a bit over rated. Maybe.

In Game four at Dallas the biggest name in basketball had 8 points.

Enough said on that one, and no he wasn’t hurt. Zero points in the fourth and final quarter. Last night, James did have a weak triple double. If there is such a thing as weak it was. All while missing 11 of 19 shots. Yes, he had 17 points but went bye-bye in the fourth quarter again.

Wade was injured and a bit off his game, not much though. Dirk, well he had his usual 29 points and was all over it in the fourth quarter. Dallas 112 Miami 103.

And oh, by the way the Heat led 99-95 early in the fourth quarter.

The good news: KU’s Mario Chalmers (he had the tying 3 pointer in the KU NCAA title game in ’08) is playing great and might become a baby star in the NBA next season or NOW  if the Heat can come back.

LeBron can end all this rough talk with TWO big comeback games in Miami. But I don’t see that happening.

Nick and I have holes in our pockets from being wrong on this one. Damn it.
