New Jack City: Has Hollywood Given Up On Older Demos? Think Again!

I hear the complaints all the time…

Why has Hollywood shut out the adult market? Seems like all the movies today are strictly for kids, teens and young adults.

That’s not necessarily true.

Granted, the summer is skewed heavily towards younger moviegoers, who after all, are out of school.
That’s when the studios like to unleash their tentpoles and popcorn flicks.

This past summer was no exception with blockbusters such as, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, MADAGASCAR 3, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, TED, MEN IN BLACK 3 and MAGIC MIKE all unspooling to big box office takes. Continue reading

Glazer: My Love / Hate / Love Affair with the Late Rabbi Morris B. Margolies

Ninety year-old Rabbi Morris B. Margolies has died…

Without argument he was the leader of Kansas City’s Jewish people for decades. The Rabbi was a scholar, author, maybe even a bit of a genius. He was a strong advocate for Israel and the rights of people all over the world. As a speaker in this city he was nearly unmatched.

The Rabbi was my friend and sometimes foe over my nearly half century with him. Continue reading

Glazer: Chiefs Almost Show Up for Monday Night, Now It’s Draft Time

How’s that song go again?

“Somewhere the birds are chirping, somewhere the kids are singing and somewhere people are smiling…but in KANSAS CITY…Mighty Casey has struck out!”

The Chiefs were gallant last night on national TV. The defense, aided by bad weather, was very good. Especially our kinda-stars Derrick Johnson, Brandon Flowers, Justin Houston and Javier Arenas (he’s not a star but played well). Even Tamba Hali showed up. Continue reading

Whinery: What’s Going to Change?

After watching everything transpire since last week’s election, a persistent question keeps coming to mind…

What, if anything, has changed?

That’s the question everyone should be asking of themselves. A year and a half of almost constant campaigning, six billion dollars spent on electioneering, countless hours spent by volunteers on all sides of the political spectrum and a circus played out in the media. But what really changed? Can you answer that question? I can.

NOTHING! Continue reading

Hearne: Star Hits Subscribers for Additional Subscription Fees, Special Editions

Well, the Kansas City Star finally came clean with subscribers…

In a letter dated Wednesday November 7th, Chris Christian told with readers they will be automatically charged an additional 69 cents per week for the newspaper’s new E-Star online content. Whether they want it, use it or not.

Put another way, that’s about $36 a year times 183,000 weekday subscribers or a little more than $6.5 million a year.

Kinda puts the 69 cents figure in perspective, huh? Continue reading

Hearne: Armstrong Finally Quits Livestrong, Ball in Sporting’s Court

Like I told you last summer, Lance Armstrong had to go, now he finally has…

There’s no way Sporting Kansas City – having foolishly embraced the seven time Tour de France winner in the middle of his high profile fall from grace – could continue with its Livestrong stadium branding if Armstrong continued on with the cancer charity.

Here’s what I said in August; “Beleaguered cyclist Lance Armstrong needs to fall on his sword and divorce himself from the organization that bears his name, The Lance Armstrong Foundation. The degree of difficulty: extreme. The importance doing so (and quickly): vital.”

But true to Armstrong’s sleazy form, it was far from quick. Continue reading

Mancow: Send in the Clowns, Bring on the WWE, Nothing’s Real Anymore

I’m turning “heel” and hating on America…

Hearne: No Way Marty Schottenheimer Returns to ‘Scene of the Crime’

Hate to be a party pooper but…

Here’s why – in my humble opinion – Marty Schottenheimer would have a very hard time returning to Kansas City. The rumor and fervent hope being that Schottenheimer might replace Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli.

And if you subscribe to The Scribe, maybe even lasso former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher to run the team on the field.

Talk about wet dreams.

Now return with me if you will to January of 1999 where I stood in a room alongside other media while Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt and general manager Carl Peterson, without explanation, more-or-less hung Schottenheimer out to dry. Continue reading

Glazer: Clark Hunt Wants Off Hotseat. Will Marty or Bill Cowher Rescue Him?

Word is that Marty is being considered as new general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs…

You know, Marty Schottenheimer. He was in town recently for his book signing and told USA Today he’s been in contact with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.

The question being, did he talk to Hunt about a JOB?

Imagine Schottenheimer teaming with former Chiefs coach and Steelers Super Bowl coach Bill Cowher.

That sounds great, but could it actually happen? Continue reading

Donnelly: Bahamas at the Bottleneck, November 8, 2012

Afie Jurvanen grew up about as far from a tropical island as you can get, in the cold and dark of Barrie, Ontario.

So perhaps it’s telling that he chose the name Bahamas to serve as his on-stage moniker, a nod to a far flung paradise that a kid from Canada could only see in magazines.  Or maybe he just thought it would be funny for a flannel-clad dude from the far north to go by a totally disassociated name. Hearne: Will Prairie Village Go Dark This Holiday Season Along With Father Christmas?

It’s official, or all but official…

For the first time in 48 years, longtime Prairie Village Christmas display maestro Mike Babick will not be decorating his home at 7611 Falmouth.

Not unless he gets a last minute stay of execution by this coming week, which Babick says is highly unlikely.

But there’s more…

Since Prairie Village’s new ordinance went into effect that states “any attraction or display that draws huge numbers of people will not be issued a permit,” Babick says, he hasn’t seen hide nor hair of any holiday lighting on commercial buildings. Buildings that usually by this time in past years would be festooned with lights and ready to Jingle Bell Rock. Continue reading

Glazer: National Championship is K-State’s to Win or Lose

They may not be the sexy pick…

Still Kansas State has all but locked up the national title game in January. Likely they will square off against Oregon. NOBODY on the planet called that one a couple months back – not even K-State cheerleader Kevin Keitzman. 810 sports radio and Kietzman are in love with his team. KK must be on Cloud Nine.

I can’t blame him. Continue reading

Glazer: This Week’s Pick & What’s Left of the Chiefs Monday Night

Well, we’re into the second half of the NFL and the last third of College Football…

And it gets harder and harder to pick the winners as the season moves towards its conclusion. Sure, you know who the better teams are, but injuries and long winning streaks that wear on teams like Atlanta in the NFL – and Alabama in the NCAA – sometimes make the outcomes difficult.

Things could get rough on the Crimson Tide today with Texas A&M. I believe Alabama will win, but it could be a hard fought game for them, like last week with LSU.

K-State not only has to stay unbeaten for its hope to play in the national title game, it must win with style points. In other words blast its foe. Which might be uphill with an injured quarterback. Let’s hope not. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: Helen Hunt Bares All as Sex Surrogate in ‘The Sessions’

Imagine having spent most of your life being wheeled around on a gurney and your nights sleeping in an iron lung…

That was the real life story of writer Mark O’Brien who was paralyzed from the neck down by polio since childhood. He’s played flawlessly in THE SESSIONS by John Hawkes of WINTER’S BONE fame.

By the age of 38 the need for physical sex had become overwhelming for Mark. He just had to experience it before death come knocking—which could be any day.

What would he do and how would he justify it with his Catholic upbringing? Continue reading

Donnelly: Too Little Too Late, Sporting Eliminated by Houston

LIVESTRONG was juiced last night with brand new intro videos and a booming bass that worked the sellout crowd into a nervous frenzy.

Indeed, it was Sporting Kansas City on the back foot, needing to hold the Houston Dynamo scoreless, and score at least 2 goals themselves just to send the game into overtime.  That with several relative nubes getting the start due to the injuries of Julio Cesar and Paulo Nagamura.  As the squads lined up, a low roar built up slowly and continued for a good while until the initial whistle blew. Glazer: Colorado Legalizes Pot. It’s Time for the Rest of the Country to Follow

When I was in prison there were so many young people in there with me doing 3-20 years simply for having weed…

For growing it in their basement or selling the dreaded marijuana. That for many of them was the real crime, that they were in there at all. Few had any  money, most had public defenders, yet were labeled “Big Time Dealers.”

It’s how our legal system has worked for more than 60 years.

We have over 5 million people in prison today, more than China and Russia together. Continue reading

Twenty three films in 50 years and yet Daniel Craig‘s third outing as James Bond is definitely one of the better ones in the entire franchise…

Hearne: Star Columnist Puts Sporting KC on Hot Seat Over Lance Armstrong Ties

What did I tell you two years back about Sam Mellinger?

The then green in the gills Kansas City Star sports scribe was facing a daunting challenge. To fill the oversize shoes worn so long by ousted sports shit-stirrer Jason Whitlock and effusive-to-a-fault but quite popular wordsmith Joe Posnanski.

What did I tell you? Check it: Continue reading
