Michael Franti

This isn’t going to be your standard issue concert revue…

Because this wasn’t your standard concert; it was more of a spiritual experience than anything else, where Franti came to play his music and mingle with friends. And by mingle, I mean actually mingle. He spent more time in the audience playing and singing than any musician I’ve ever seen…more on that later.

I met a few friends outside the venue prior to the show. One was blogger, author, servitor, food authority David Hayden and his lovely lady Paula. David and I differ on several points of view in the political world, but I like David a lot and he’s dead accurate in his music views. He had met Franti on a few occasions and told me how normal and accessible he was, so media pass in hand, I headed over to the busses and sure enough, the band was just hanging out.

I motioned to one of the security dudes about my interest in asking a couple of questions and Franti walked right over with J. Boogie his guitarist. I got to visit with the guys for several minutes and they were just totally delightful. I told him I’d written a preview on the show and mentioned him giving a lot of credit to the Midwest for his success which he confirmed. Then he gave me copy of the set list, said goodbye and headed back inside. Continue reading →

It’s been a slow news week here in KC metro, but I’ll leave you with a few thoughts and a preview of coming attractions for this next week.…

On Monday I’ll be tackling some interesting stories, digging into the real truth behind the dreaded “ObamaPhones.” We’ll focus on sorting out truth from rumor and the answers just may surprise you. In the meantime, watch this as a primer, she is the lady who started it all!

We’ll start an in-depth look into Aim4Peace and just what they do, or don’t do, in the prevention of crime in KCMO. It’s a division of the KCMO Department of Health with a seemingly dubious mission. I’ve had discussions with Alonzo Washington on this topic, he’ll be chiming in.

And I’ll be digging to the bottom of a couple of their budget line items that are begging for clarification and I can almost promise you there’ll be some eye opening surprises there. Continue reading →

As I wrote in my preview piece last week, Michael Franti and Spearhead is touring for their release of “All People” and, for my taste, it’s the best possible combination of reggae groove with a side order of folk, rock, hip hop, pop, jazz and funk.

Franti’s trademark – socially conscious lyrics – are still firmly in place, but after some life changes, he’s cranking out some really positive, happy music these days. Not as politically in your face, not the angry young man he once was but still very much the poet and activist he’s always been.

That’s the word anyway.

Why, you ask?

There are more than enough reasons. Especially were the Clintons the shining example of what defines monogamous, married, moral mates… but of course they’re not. Not even close.

And yes, Anthony Weiner has been spanked twice for sexting, the second time after he swore he’d stopped and had gotten “treatment” for his “disorder.” The newest damage, according to Hillary insiders was Weiner’s embarrassing loss of the New York Mayor’s race. And of course there was the middle finger flip off he gave the crowd as he drove away from his defeat party. Continue reading →

No, your well-coiffed Scribe said it was just the dipping of billionaire Wang Jianlin‘s big Chinese toe in the water to test the temperatures.

I then predicted the ultimate move of AMC’s headquarters from their new, posh, Leawood digs to the Left Coast; I think you’ll see that in less than 3 years.

And now the next shoe drops as China’s richest man, the mastermind behind the $2.6 billion acquisition of  AMC,  announces plans to develop the Oriental Movie Metropolis, complete with 20 sound stages, the world’s first underwater studio, a convention and exhibition complex, a shopping mall with an indoor amusement park and seven resort hotels covering two square miles of land.
