Hearne: Jury Still Out on Local Business Buyouts Like Boulevard Brewing

The Dallas Texans

The Dallas Texans

Everybody’s looking a story to tell, me included…

But on the front page of Wednesday’s Kansas City Star, the newspaper leaps to an unsupported conclusion that locals are “feeling better” about Boulevard Brewing being sold to a Belgian company. Why? Simply because the Star ran a couple quotes from people with vested interests in maintaining a positive relationship with whoever owns Boulevard?

That hardly constitutes a case study.

Hey boosterism, with rare exception, is the game the Star likes to play.

However that doesn’t justify the front page graphic – ostensibly intended to further ease reader’s concerns over the Boulevard buy out – listing a “sampling” of other “locally grown Kansas City businesses” that got bought out by insiders “over the years.”

Hold it right there… Continue reading

Sounds Good: Spirit is the Spirit and ACBs @ Replay, Deer Tick @ Bottleneck, Lovett and Hiatt @ Uptown

Got your costumes ready?  No?  Halloween is for children, you say?

Au contraire, mon frère.

The adults have officially stolen this day for themselves to go out, drink, wear super slutty clothing, and post crappy photos to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – you get the picture.

I knew we had taken back Halloween when I came across the awesome costumes you see to the left.  (Side note: so are those two girls “life partners,” then?)

What, Sponge Bob didn’t want any of that?  How about Shrek?

No, actually they did…

Hearne: The Twisted Tale of The Velvet Dog & Empire Room Closings

4911527.0A belated happy birthday to the Velvet Dog…

The Midtown watering hole turned 19 this past week. Unfortunately it – and sister club the Empire Room – closed mysteriously nearing a month ago. With no explanation other than a pair of “remodeling” signs in the front windows.

A check with the usual suspects – Regulated Industries (aka Liquor Control) and Kansas City’s Health Department – reveal no regulatory reasons for the closings. However local bar owner heads have been shaking. Businessmen who agree that closing two clubs for remodeling at the same time is highly unusual and very unlikely. Especially sans any outward evidence of remodeling work being done.

Which brings us to the question of whether something was amiss between Dog and Empire Room founder Chris Seferyn and partner Vince Rook. Neither have returned repeated calls and in Seferyn’s case, email requests for an interview or comment for upwards of three weeks.

Leaving the quest for reasons and understanding for the mysterious closures an investigative matter.

Now it can be told… Continue reading

Leftridge: Eleven Quality Scary Movies, Because Why Not, It’s Halloween

pumpkinIt’s raining as I write this, and that helps to accomplish Halloween just about as well as anything else. Some rain—some fog if you can get it—a crispness to the air, maybe a fire roaring in the fireplace, and some ghost stories. I enjoy reading quite a bit more than the average person, but if that’s not your bag, there are always scary movies.

I love those, too.

The problem with scary movies, though, is that there’s a ton of shit out there. No field is more replete with schlocky garbage than the “horror” genre. And while sometimes I can get behind something mindless with a lot of blood and guts, usually I want something that genuinely makes me afraid to turn the lights off and head to bed.

So I’ve compiled a list of horror films that actually scare me. Movies that instill a bit of dread or unease, the kind of picture that sticks with you… at least until sunrise.

Hearne: Mizzou’s Will Gregory Drops Hammer on KU’s Glass House

IMG_3066Anybody who thinks KU hasn’t moved on to basketball already has to be a sports agnostic…

Take Tuesday’s Lawrence Journal World, festooned with not one, but two giant front page pics of coveted KU freshman Andrew Wiggins. Talk about giddy, the entire town has gone ga-ga over a high school kid from Canada who’s all but guaranteed to be a one and done wonder.

“Wiggins era of KU basketball begins,” shouts the headline referencing last night’s meaningless game against lowly Pittsburg State.

Question: Since when does a freshman playing maybe five months tops of college basketball qualify as an era? Continue reading

Hearne: Lefsetz Blows Whistle on Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Clear Channel & Miley

facebook-loser-tshirt-friendHe may be more than just a little cranky…

He may be a full-time know-it-all, but there’s gold in them thar barbs that music industry curmudgeon Bob Lefsetz dishes out. Check out his latest rants on all things hip:
CROWDFUNDING

Peaked. You hardly even hear about it anymore. Another Internet fad that didn’t live up to its promise.

It all depends on the excitement of benefactors. Right now, they’re elsewhere, and too many are disappointed what they funded did not come to be, or did not meet their standards. Furthermore, those who raised money found out they could fund their project, but could not increase their visibility.

GOOGLE

We have no need for another search engine unless it’s demonstrably better. So far, no one’s done search better than Google, there’s no need to go to Bing. This war’s been fought.

TWITTER

Illustrates how Wall Street is out of touch. Dropouts galore, but the Street can only talk about money. Tweeting is akin to calling for your mommy at Yankee Stadium.

As for the Stadium, we’re all interested in stars. So the most popular on Twitter have an audience, no one wants to hear the musings of the wannabe.

FACEBOOK

Is populated by those who post incessantly and grazers…and dropouts. It’s somewhere you used to go  that you occasionally visit, fearful you’re missing out on something, but you’ve got no allegiance. Continue reading

New Jack City: The Oscars—Off to the Races!

12-Years-A-SlaveGame on!

If I were a betting person I’d be choosing between three movies when it comes to Hollywood’s top prize in the annual Oscar derby.

Here is what it will (probably) come down to on Sunday, March 2, 2014.

* 12 YEARS A SLAVE, the brutal, unrelenting and devastating true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom.

Abducted as a free black man from upstate New York he was sold into slavery where he faced incredible cruelty—as well as unexpected kindness.

The Steve McQueen directed film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and Brad Pitt. (Pitt also co-produced the drama.)

Look for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Director nominations here.

12 YEARS A SLAVE opens as a limited three theater engagement this Friday, November 1st in Kansas City. Continue reading

Donnelly: Sporting Heading into Playoffs After Finishing 2nd in MLS by a Whisker

Sporting Kansas City took care of its business, but it still wasn’t quite enough to win the MLS Supporter’s Shield, awarded to the top scoring team in the League.

That was destined instead for the New York Red Bulls, who throttled the Chicago Fire Sunday 5-2 to take the trophy.  If NY had lost or tied, Sporting would have had the honors.

So, great regular season, punctuated by KC’s road form. Continue reading

Hearne: Brandon Was Right, Chiefs Unmasked by Cleveland Win

628x471Living on borrowed time…

That’s probably the best way to describe this year’s undefeated Kansas City Chiefs football team, says everybody’s favorite Scribe, Craig Glazer.

“You know, there’s a lot of similarities between Missouri and the Chiefs, except for a couple things,” Glazer says. “The Chiefs have great coaching and Missouri doesn’t – there are questions about Gary Pinkel, obviously. And while Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith isn’t Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers, he’s a really smart guy that knows the game.

“So the difference between the Chiefs and MU – with both playing a weal schedule – is that the Chiefs found some really smart coaching and Alex Smith – for all his negatives – is a true, true quarterback. he does a lot of smart things that don’t show up on the scoreboard.”

That’s the good news for Kansas City stalwarts…now the bad. Continue reading

Hearne: Mizzou Football, Vahe Unmasked; Scribe Looks for Bottom to Fall Out

hi-res-184220464-ldamian-washington-of-the-missouri-tigers-reacts-after_crop_northIt’s not polite to say, “I told you so,” but…

“Unfortunately, it looks like my original prediction about Missouri is more accurate,” says Stanford’s main man / football scribe Craig Glazer. “I think Missouri’s got a win or two left in them, but they got undressed Saturday. They had a cavalcade of embarrassing plays. Just everything was bad – poor coaching, playing not to lose, the Missouri quarterback in the fourth quarter stopped throwing the football. But once you start playing not to lose, you lose. And they lost to a good, not great South Carolina football team at home.”

Now the really bad news: Continue reading

Hearne: What’s the Matter With Kansas? (Ask Kentucky)

kentucky+governor+steve+beshear+generic+pic+470x264All that hand wringing over startup difficulties with the ObamCare website….

It’s beyond obvious what game Republicans are playing, but the media? Hey, short of any government shutdowns, school shootings or high profile sex scandals, they’ll milk whatever they can milkl.

Forget that the Affordable Care Act is in its infancy. But it’s like trying to put the baby to sleep because it wasn’t born housebroken. After all, this is something that – in theory anyway – that’s going to be around for decades to come.

However not everybody is up you know what creek.

Take my old state Kentucky (betcha didn’t know I’m a Kentucky Colonel). Continue reading

Glazer: Scribe Sets Wobbily Sights on College, Pro Football Weekend

UnknownSomebody’s going to have to pinch us and wake us all up…

Because both the Kansas City Chiefs and Missouri are undefeated at 7 and 0.  We’ve heard the same conversations about our Chiefs over and over – great defense, weak offense.  Keep this in mind, with about half the quarterbacks in the league either injured or not playing due to injury. Right now, we are the lucky ones.  In fact our Chiefs may be the healthiest team out there as of right now.

With the season nearly to the halfway point, it’s become abundantly clear that our offense will continue to struggle scoring points.  All we seem to get is one or two scoring drives per game to go along with whatever our special teams or defense can create.  And there are just a few days left for the Chiefs to find a helpful trade or pick up outside help.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t feel like anything major will happen in that regard.

I mean, how bad is it out there when the Saint Louis Rams are calling Brett Favre who retired three years ago and now a high school football coach? As you may have heard, his answer was a resounding no.

Maybe it’s Tebow Time for the Rams.  Continue reading

Sutherland: Zelig Visits Possum Trot

mauroisEven if the founders of Kansas City had stuck to their initial plan to name the town after our favorite native creature, one suspects André Maurois, roving intellectual, French patriot, and all-round good guy would have still been as fulsome in his praise.  All my life I’ve seen the following quote of his flaunted by local boosters like the Chamber of Commerce and the J.C. Nichols Company:

“Who in Europe, or America, for that matter, knows that Kansas City is one of the loveliest cities on earth? And, yet it is true.” Continue reading

Leftridge: The Chiefs Must Crush Cleveland in Resounding Fashion

brownsThe (7-0. 7-0. 7-0.) Kansas City Chiefs host the 3-4 Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but you already knew that.

You also already know that the Chiefs will win, and Arrowhead will be insane and KC will still be undefeated and riding high atop the AFC West. There will be jubilation in the parking lot, and lots of boisterous, projectile vomiting before, during and after the game.

This is all a given.

What you may NOT realize, however, is just how important it is for the Chiefs to absolutely demolish the Browns. Take them out behind the woodshed. Mud-holes must be stomped, and so forth.  Continue reading

Sounds Good: Skaggs and Hornsby @ Yardley Hall, Replay B-day Party @ Replay, Taj Mahal @ Yardley Hall

A couple of album releases I’ve been keeping my eye on are coming up Tuesday, October 29th.

The big one is Arcade Fire‘s follow up to their smash-hit The Suburbs.  It’s called Reflektor and the single that was dropped a few weeks ago features David Bowie and a trippy, echoe-y chorus.  You know, Arcade Fire.

The other one has a bit less fanfare, but I’ve been digging their stuff.  The band is called Minor Alps, and is made up of Julianna Hatfield and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws.  The album is called Get There, and it’s a cross between electro-folk and indie.
