Edelman: Spinning Tree Theatre’s ‘AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ a Hot Hit
Things may be turning chilly in Penn Valley Park…
But Andy Parkhurst and Michael Grayman— the dudes behind newcomer Spinning Tree Theatre— are heating up one corner of that sylvan glade with the hot hits of AIN’T MISBEHAVIN (now thru November 17 at the Just Off Broadway Theatre).
This theater’s a bit hard to find– head north on Wyandotte from Linwood Blvd until it turns into Central, cross 31st Street to 3051 Central– but that’s where the joint is really jumpin in this well-built homage to jazz great Fats Waller and a Tony Award winning Best Musical revue.
Andy’s fluid, inventive staging and the exceptional musical direction of wunderkind Angie Benson at the piano drive this fine production, but it’s in the casting that Spinning Tree really shines. KC musical theater stalwart (and star) Jennie Greenberry is luminous out there on the JOB stage, getting every lick of comedy and pathos out of her performance. Jazz baby Eboni Fondren brings her cabaret sass and style to the proceedings. When these two gals get going, you can’t take your eyes off ’em. Continue reading

Paul Wilson: The Aleatory Side of Life
As some of you are aware – possibly even celebrated – I’ve been absent of late…
I’ve received numerous emails and calls of concern from readers and for that, I thank you all. And Stomper, hearing from you was like listening to the soothing words from an old friend that spoke to my heart at a time I needed it; I can’t thank you enough.
I got back in town late last night so, little by little, get ready, the dry spell is over and your well-coiffed scribe is more committed than ever to the goal of getting Mysterious J all the way through just one story.
So where have I been for the last 10 days? Continue reading
Hearne: Uptown Theater & Shoppes Poised to Explode in Midtown KC
This could get a little confusing, so pay attention…
Remember early last summer when KC Confidential broke the news that Stanford’s Comedy Club was Uptown Theater bound? Well, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then, more than you might imagine; there was a complaint from a confused neighbor who couldn’t quite tell the diff between a comedy club and a dance club; then lengthy negotiations delayed Stanford’s Summer Comedy Series from August to November (it’s a Winter Series now). And there were other behind-the-scenes goings on that pretty much everybody involved doesn’t want anybody not involved to know about.
Got all that? Continue reading
Sutherland: The Varieties of Whole Foods Experience Gone Mad
Well over a hundred years ago (in 1902), the philosopher William James wrote a book called “The Varieties of Religious Experience.”
The thing that struck him the most was that all the different religions he studied had a number of elements in common. When you think about it this should not be surprising since the religious impulse has been present in every culture and in every era, even when it has appeared in the guise of a philosophy defined by its hostility to traditional religious belief (i.e., Marxism and its dialectical materialism).
Is this still true, though?
Isn’t American society increasingly secular? Isn’t the rising generation of 18 to 35 year olds (“Millennial’s”) especially skeptical on matters of religious faith, with a poll this week saying that only 17% identified themselves as believers in Christianity or Judaism?
I would say that there is a growing faith based movement that has captured the hearts and minds of America’s younger generation, though they would be outraged if you called it a religion.
It’s called the environmental movement. Continue reading
Donnelly: Sporting KC Dig 2-1 Hole, Return Home Wednesday for Second Playoff Game
On Saturday night Sporting Kansas City lost the away leg of their two-game playoffs series against the New England Revolution, 2-1.
It wasn’t a very fluid performance by either team and the field itself added to the ugliness. In true high school soccer form, New England’s field was all decked out with Patriots logos and American football yard markers and such. It was very distracting to watch on TV, to say the least. And it reminded viewers that the MLS is still just the MLS.
But aside from the atrocious field, KC still had its chances, but could only put one in the net, which was a deflected ball that bounced through the box and found the foot of Aurelien Collin for the tap in.
At that point, KC was already trailing 2-0, so to get back that one goal was huge. Or, should I say, BIG? Continue reading
Hearne: Ted Owens Bittersweet Return to KU Campus
From first to worst – and then back – in 20 easy years…
That basically charts the popularity of Ted Owens, the 84 year-old former KU basketball head coach who returned to Lawrence yesterday for a book signing at the Kansas Union Ballroom on campus.
Paired with mega popular current KU coach Bill Self, it was a valedictorian visit, complete with accolades from former KU stars Owens coached during his 19 seasons, like Bud Stallworth and Tony Guy.
It was also essentially a minor rewrite of history and an overly fond remembrance of probably the most disliked KU basketball coach in the school’s storied past. Continue reading
Hearne: KU Needs to ‘Judge’ Football Coach Charlie Weis Now
“Charlie Weis; Wait until season’s end to judge,” reads the headline on KU Sports.com…
While that’s likely how things will play out, football scribe Craig Glazer has a different take:
“Ha! I heard that,” Glazer says. “Well, if his goal is to win one game in the Big 12 – which I suppose would be West Virginia -if that’s going to make everybody happy, start the parade.”
It’s like this: Continue reading
Hearne: The Predictable Unpredictability of Missouri’s Tigers
The similarities between the Mizzou football team and the Chiefs is actually sickening…
Up to a point that is, but “Missouri has got more of an overall game,” says everybody’s favorite pigskin purveyor Craig Glazer. “Compared to the Chiefs they’re more talented and really, they’re closing in on what could be a historic year. I was a little hasty when I dunned them.”
That’s basically what passes for the good news right now.
“But it’s coming down to they need to beat Ole Miss,” Glazer says. “Because with the loss to Texas A&M, they’d be tied with South Carolina and South Carolina would play Alabama because they beat Missouri. But wait a minute, South Carolina has to play Clemson which may be better than them. So even though that game’s at South Carolina, Clemson may well beat them.”

Hearne: Scribe Worries Aloud About The Posers We Know as The Kansas City Chiefs
That’s the uncomfortable feeling comedy club main man and football prognosticator Craig Glazer gets every time the Kansas City Chiefs live to tell the story after another squeaker.
“Well, they’re 9-0,” Glazer says. “It’s hard to explain being a Chiefs fan because every game looks the same. But it’s hard to swallow that winning by luck is what’s really going on. We all say it takes luck and talent to win a championship in the NFL and that’s true. but it’s beginning to look like it’s too much luck with the Chiefs and not enough talent – and that’s becoming painfully apparent.”
Take today’s win over Buffalo. Continue reading
Glazer: Scribe Unleashes This Week’s College & Pro Picks
Now that the dust has settled and MU may have James Franklin back as soon as this week, they may still have a legitimate shot at winning their division. After all, they control their own destiny and no other team in their division does. Now that Tennessee has lost its main quarterback, I’m sorry, its first-string quarterback, the Tigers should roll over the mediocre visitors. That will make MU 8 and 1 with three important games remaining; a likely victory over Kentucky and then two tough ones.
The Tigers will face Johnny Football and Texas A&M which is the SEC’s version of the Denver Broncos, which means likely a loss but a win is still possible. The swing game is Ole Miss and that could go either way. So a date with No. 1 Alabama’s Crimson Tide is still very much alive. Continue reading

Hearne: Stanford’s on Broadway Mounts Comedy Comeback @ The Uptown
Now hear this…
At long last, it’s been awhile in the making, but now it’s official; after more than a decade, comedy is returning to midtown Kansas City on November 21st when Stanford’s on Broadway hits the Uptown.
“Despite all the difficult in putting this together, comedy is coming back to Westport and midtown,” says Uptown main man Larry Sells. “And now people can vote with their feet and come see some great comics.”
The club tips off with former KC comic AJ Finney.
“He started out as a local comic and was on KY with Max, Tanna and Moffitt,” says Stanford’s main man Craig Glazer. “Now he has a top 10 iTunes comedy album and is a regular on the Sirius comedy channel. He’s a cutting edge, hipster comic who first got noticed when he won the HBO comedy event in Las Vegas a few years ago.”
Speaking of which… Continue reading
Hearne: ‘Survivor’ B.B. Andersen of Mission Hills Dead @ 77
They say the bigger you are, the harder you fall…
There are however exceptions to such broad generalities, and until this past Tuesday, Mission Hills multi-millionaire B.B. Andersen would appear to be the poster child for such exceptions. Short of having the complete inside track on Andersen’s life story, it’s hard to cite an example of the international businessman and Survivor Season One reality show star ever having slipped.
“He was an amazing, amazing guy,” says attorney Dwight Sutherland. “And he was a major, major donor to the Republican Party and it paid off for him. He got all sorts of government contracts. I mean, he got the bottled water concession for the first Gulf War in 1991 for Desert Storm. He had a condo in Northern Iraq.”
And yet somehow, despite Andersen’s many plaudits, he managed to keep a low profile locally. Continue reading
Jack Goes Confidential: Geriatric ‘Last Vegas’—and Beyond!
Heading to the screening of LAST VEGAS earlier this week I was primed for yet another version of THE HANGOVER…
A geezer edition of what happens in Vega stays in Vegas, maybe?
At least that’s what the commercials for the comedy would have you believe. Senior citizens gone wild.
But guess what? Director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) takes things beyond the obvious—even as he joked about it recently telling an interviewer “the movie is rated PG-74.”
Here Michael Douglas is the driving force behind a senior quartet of best friends who all grew up together in Brooklyn. Matter of fact that’s how the movie begins with the Flatbush four as kids. Each with his own personality and character flaws.
Now some six decades later things aren’t what they used to be. Continue reading
Hearne: Don’t Miss KC’s Puddle of Mudd Tonight (Free) @ Edge of Hell
There are so few famous rock bands to truly make it outside of KC…
You know, Brewer & Shipley, The Rainmakers and of course, Puddle of Mudd.
And no, I haven’t forgotten about David Cook, but at this point, Cook is little more than a reality star whose 15 minutes are about up. Depending of course on if he can claw his way back into the limelight, a dubious prospect at this point.
Back to Puddle of Mudd and more specifically frontman Wes Scantlin. Continue reading
Hearne: KMBC’s Larry Moore to Hang It Up Day Before Thanksgiving
Channel 9 anchor Larry Moore taps out…on Facebook!
You got it, when the 68 year-old television news anchor decided to call it quits, he laid it all down on social media, specifically his Facebook page for – not just KMBC 6 p.m news viewers to see – but his 131 “Likes.”
That’s right, only 131. I’m No. 132.
And just like that, the guy with thoaw giant 1970s sideburns that local Baby Boomers grew up with for the better part of 40 years, announced that he will bite the television dust on November 27th, the day before Thanksgiving.
Adios, Big Guy.

Phillip Brown: Don’t Get Conned, Jackson County. Vote ‘No’ on Question 1
Jackson County, have I got a deal for you…
Children’s Mercy, St. Luke’s and UMKC have gotten together to form the Jackson County Institute for Translational Medicine and it’s going to be great. (First off, notice how they put “Jackson County” right in the name, so everybody knows it’s you. That’s great, right?)
The Institute will develop new cures and treatments for all sorts of stuff. (Just what, well, that’s to be determined later. Maybe it’ll cure blindness. Who knows?)
And it’s going to benefit not just Jackson County, but the entire metro area. Continue reading
