Hearne: Oliver Stone Plugs Larry Sells New JFK Book in USA Today
Guess who wasn’t in Kansas City last Friday?
Uptown Theater top dog Larry Sells, that’s who. Sells was holed up in the unofficial conspiracy world headquarters in Dallas, Texas for the 50th anniversary of the killing of President John F. Kennedy.
When I called Sells Thursday morning to wish him Happy JFK Day, he shot back, “It’s Happy Slaughter Kennedy in Dallas & Pretend You Didn’t Do It Day. And that’s what they’re doing here and I’m heading to Dealey Plaza this morning.”
Sells was especially pleased about director Oliver Stone‘s plug for his new bookJFK: Absolute Proof by noted Kennedy Assassination expert and author Robert Groden. Continue reading

Glazer: The Scribe Rocks the NFL & College Football Weekend, Bill Self, Sporting KC & The Chiefs
I’ve taken some Chiefs fan resentment hits this week due to the fact I’ve recently been dunning the Chiefs for their shortcomings…
However I’m only pointing out the facts, like them or not. Yes a 9 and 1 record is a fantastic record and there’s much to be proud of given the recent poor performances of the past. And like most Chiefs fans I was hoping the offense would improve as the weeks rolled on.
But not only did it not improve, it got worse.
As of the last four or five weeks, the Chiefs have the overall worst offense in the NFL. We have no receivers and Dwayne Bowe just can’t get it done alone. More bad news, even with the two week rest, Jamaal Charles, our only weapon, wasn’t able to spring loose on the ground or in the air against Denver. Yes, he had one nice run but that was it. We are not seeing Charles or Dexter McCluster hit the ball much at all on screen plays.
Quarterback Alex Smith has no time to throw, usually due to poor offensive line protection, which makes matters even worse. Again, I want to remind you the Chiefs had a two week rest period then went backwards on offense. Continue reading
Paul Wilson: Weak in Review 11/22/13 — Manson, Zimmerman, Glazer, Postal Carrier & You?
What’s More Weak; Zimmerman with a GF or Manson Getting Married?
Yes, these freak jobs convicts have pen pals, girlfriends and offers of matrimony, as you well know. This one’s still hard to believe. Manson’s crazed stalker/lover/fiancée, known only as “Star,” is trapped in her prison of love. So much so, she’s moved to Corcoran, CA to be closer to her man who has a small condo there in a gate community with some of the tightest security around.
“I’ll tell you straight up, Charlie and I are going to get married,” the alledged fiancée told Rolling Stone. “I take it very seriously. Charlie is my husband. Charlie told me to tell you this.” Reportedly, Manson gets visits with her every weekend. Star told the Rolling Stone she’s 25 and this forbidden love began when she was 19.
Manson, however, in the same article, told his version; “That’s a bunch of garbage. That’s trash. We’re just playing that for public consumption.”
Chris Rock said our goal as fathers is to keep our daughters off the pole. This may need to be added to the list. Continue reading
Hearne: Columbia, Mo. – Not That it Sucks, But Scribe Says He Wouldn’t Wanna Live There
It’d be a nice place to do biz but he really wouldn’t want to live there…
So says comedy impresario turned scribe Craig Glazer of Columbia, Missouri. It’s been a while since the Glaze graced the home of the Missouri Tigers with his presence, but from what he’s seen, heard and understands, it’s one of the last places on earth he’d realistically consider settling down in. You know, outside of war torn or impoverished places, dog patches and / or loser cities like my former home-away-from-home last year, Topeka.
So in response to everybody’s “favorite” comments section harpy, Harley, Glazer weighed in on some of the preceived differences between Lawrence, Kansas (home of KU and 30 minutes to an hour from KC) and Columbia (home of the MU football team.
“Lawrence is kind of a Yellow Brick Road city,” Glazer says. “Columbia is drab and dark. The things in Lawrence are cool, everything there is cutting edge. People say KU is the UCLA of the Midwest. It’s more erudite and it’s a little snobbish in a way, but let’s put it this way, Lawrence is a more interesting city.”
The flip said of that equation: Continue reading
Starbeams: Wichita Looms Large, Toronto Mayor Stripped & Sex in a Tent
A giant Boeing 747 Dreamlifter Cargo Jet landed at the wrong airport in Wichita. The small airport has no tower and is too short for the jet to leave with standard payload. The world’s largest jet, world’s tallest waterslide…Kansas: Bigger Than You Thought.
*******
It’s official: Wichita saw more excitement Thursday than it has since the Mesozoic era.

The Mayor of Toronto says he’s sad that the Toronto City Council stripped him of most of his powers. But not nearly as sad as he is now that the McRib is gone. Continue reading
Sutherland: Sam Brownback’s Good Deed
One of the puzzling things about the local environmental movement is what I call the “Mrs. Jellyby Syndrome.” This is the name for a character in Charles Dicken’s Bleak House, a woman so consumed with the plight of the natives in distant “Borrioboola-Gha” that she neglects her own family. Another word for this is “telescopic philanthropy,” i.e. worrying about the problems in a faraway place but ignoring the more immediate crisis in your own back yard.
I hear constantly about the threats to the polar ice cap and to tropical rain forests but relatively little about a looming environmental disaster here in Kansas that is huge, immediate and indisputable. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ — McConaughey Pulls Off Oscar Worthy Performance
When I mention DALLAS BUYERS CLUB to someone, the first thing out of their mouth usually involves Matthew McConaughey’s tremendous weight loss for his starring role…
But after they’ve seen it they’ll most likely by praising his performance in the film—arguably the most powerful and challenging of his career.
A BEST ACTOR nomination here is a sure bet.
What we’ve got here is a fact-based drama about redneck Texas electrician Ron Woodroof.
“Woody’ is a good old boy. Loves his women—and how!”
Drinks plenty of beer. Always parties hardy.
Oh, and he’s a straight as an arrow homophobe.
That is until he’s diagnosed HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. Continue reading

Hearne: Stanford’s on Broadway Comedy Club Opens Tonight, This Weekend
After a decade plus of no big time comedy clubs in Kansas City, Stanford & Sons returns tonight to 37th and Broadway in the Uptown Theater Conspiracy Room. The show tips off at 8 p.m. (7:45 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday) with funny guy A. J. Finney doing the headlining honors.
“I’ve never believed in soft openings, but instead of four or five weeks to promote the opening, in this case, we’ve only had two weeks,” says Stanford’s main man Craig Glazer. “But the Kansas City Star is coming tonight to cover the opening and I think the Pitch will be coming and we’ve had really good social media so…”
And naturally, Glazer’s had his share of controversy associated with his inner city comeback. Continue reading
Leftridge: Royals Offseason Chugs Along; My Predictions
The 2003-2004 offseason was an important one for the Kansas City Royals. Riding high on their first winning record since 1994 and picked by many to be an ’04 favorite to win the division, they did what any self-respecting organization would have done: they went out and signed two key needs, outfielder Juan Gonzalez and catcher Benito Santiago.
Gonzalez—who’d slowly been building a reasonable Hall of Fame candidacy for years—hadn’t been healthy for the previous two seasons (a little over 150 games for Texas in 2002 and 2003 combined), but had shown enough pop in ’03 (24 HR coupled with a .294 avg.) that the Royals thought he was worth a look.
He was not. Continue reading
Jack Goes Confidential: ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Delivers—And Then Some!
The TWILIGHT series of movies were huge at the box office. But when it came to acting (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and company)—not so much.
By comparison THE HUNGER GAMES serve up a much stronger and seasoned lineup of acting talent led by last year’s OSCAR winning Jennifer Lawrence and surrounded by Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland. And now with Jeffrey Wright, Jena Melone and the great Philip Seymour Hoffman joining the gripping tension of ‘CATCHING FIRE.‘
As the saying goes ‘Every Revolution Begins With A Spark’….. Continue reading
Paul Wilson: Jimmy Breslin on Digging JFK’s Grave
November, 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK…
To this day, multiple books come out practically every year concerning the conspiracy surrounding President John F. Kennedy‘s death which remains mystery to many.
Largely overlooked, however, is what has always struck me as one of the most powerful pieces of writing ever composed in the days following Kennedy’s death by New York Daily News columnist and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author, Jimmy Breslin. Continue reading
Donnelly: It All Comes Down to This for Sporting KC
Bundle up kiddos…
Sporting Kansas City‘s Saturday night showdown with the Houston Dynamo is going to be a frigid affair, with temps expected to dip into the 20s by game time.
The final game in the home-and-away series sold out in a matter of hours, and then the limited standing room tickets that were released were also gobbled up in record speed. Continue reading
Hearne: Kansas City Sneezes ‘Chiefs’ — Lawrence Catches ‘Repugnant’ Cold
It’s not like this is something new…
For a couple decades fans of the Kansas City Chiefs football team have desecrated the national anthem. To the extent that one views matters that way. We all pretty much know the drill.
You’re at a sporting event or concert, or whatever and they play the National Anthem – then whammo! – at the end where everybody’s supposed sing “home of the brave,” the crowd shouts “Chiefs!”
Who among us hasn’t heard that one however many times?
And yes, it is tacky; and yes it is pretty brainless, a bunch of – dare I suggest – mostly testosterone fueled dudes doing the honors. And yes, I suppose it’s a little disrespectful to the Tea Party and Fox News types among us who take these sort of things a little too seriously.
That said, who knew it was an affront to the City of Lawrence, Kansas and the KU basketball team? Continue reading
Edelman: Little River Band, Brewer & Shipley Rock Uptown
If you thought creaky wooden chairs were the only things guys could rock past their 60s, you must have missed the goings-on at the Uptown Theater Saturday night, when the Little River Band played that fine room…
Who knew these old farts could rock?
Sure, LRB originals Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble – the cats who wrote most of their hits – are long gone from the band they put on the map. And senior bass player Wayne Nelson enjoyed the support of a passel of great young players. But Nelson held his own, crooning LRB’s sizable catalogue of hits, including his original lead vocal on their Top 10 Hit “Night Owls.”
It was a homecoming of sorts– Nelson was born back in 1950 right here in Kansas City. Continue reading
Paul Wilson: Zanyish Zimmerman Zooms Back into the News
September 11th was the last time I wrote about our Boy George…
In that story I asked, “Has George Zimmerman been so scarred by the Trayvon Martin incident that he will be forever marked in society and so psychologically damaged as a person that he may never find his center or any version of normality? Is this the course of his life from here on; living under the microscope of the media?”
The reason for my 9/11 story was his soon to be ex-wife had called 911 over a domestic incident. At that point he was accused of pulling a gun on both her and his father in law.
As of Monday this week, Zimmerman’s graced the news again, and why? He allegedly found his gun yet again and allegedly pointed it at his girlfriend after allegedly choking her. That’s a lot of “allegedlies,” but this is George Zimmerman we’re talking about.
So what’s the real news story here? Continue reading
New Jack City: Hollywood’s Holiday Rush—Right Here, Right Now
Next to the summer movie season, Thanksgiving-Christmas movie weeks are Hollywood’s second most important play period of the year…
One thing the Thanksgiving/Christmas schedule usually has OVER summer movies is the quality of films offered by the studios.
Many of the titles released are often part of the year’s Oscar hopefuls.
Here then (probably) are your most complete list of movies available to Kansas City moviegoers during the 2013 holiday period and their opening dates—which can change up to the last minute!
Many of the films listed will open wide, others in limited runs. And a few may open as exclusive engagements, then platform out to additional theaters in subsequent weeks.
Movies marked (###) are the ones I believe will become part of upcoming Oscar race.
So here they are. This year’s 25 motion pictures of Kansas City’s holiday season. Continue reading
