Hearne: Scribe Has Not One Good Thing to Say About KC Chiefs

Rottenecards_99982926_k87nvs36hjGet the black armbands out, unfold those crying towels and make an appointment with your shrink, the party’s over…

The Kansas City Chiefs probably won’t win another game this year, won’t being going to any Super Bowl’s in the next five years and their fans have nothing but mediocrity to look forward to in the foreseeable future.

That according to Stanford & Sons main man Craig Glazer, who doubles as a college and pro football handicapper and prognosticator.

“It’s like with the Royals, if you’re happy being an also ran and a borderline contender, then be happy,” Glazer says of the Chiefs. “I’m not.”

Glazer points the finger of blame directly at team owner Clark Hunt. Continue reading

New Jack City: Vince & Associates Wish Overland Park a Very Tacky, Dangerous Christmas

13vincexmasEver driven down Metcalf in Overland Park near 103rd after dark during the holidays?

If so, you’ve undoubtedly seen what could pass for the tackiest holiday display since Griswold Christmas.

That’s where clinical research outfit Vince & Associates decks out its digs every year with what could pass for the most obnoxious holiday display in the metro. An almost entire block-long display of blinking, flashing, zinging electronic kitsch.

Yes, I’m a Christian. And no, I’m not against tasteful holiday displays. But driving past this light arcade on Metcalf several nights a week I’ve observed two near miss accidents in the past few evenings alone. Continue reading

Sounds Good: Dumptruck Butterlips @ Granada, Noise FM @ RiotRoom

Is everyone primed up for the KCC Christmas Wilding?

If you don’t know, it’s going down on Monday, Dec. 23rd at the Conspiracy Room in the Uptown Theater.  Yes, there will be booze and food.  But more important than that, there will be entertainment.  No, I’m not talking live music.

I’m talking about the annual clash of writers and readers.  For most of the year, these two groups are kept separated for good reason.  But on this one special night, all bets are off.

Wanna wrestle Lefty?  We can arrange that.  Get a close-up view of Glazer’s mop?  Done.  Talk politics with Whinery?  No, no one wants that.

Anything goes folks.  See you there, but don’t forget to let us know if you’re coming…     Continue reading

Hearne: David Cook Knuckleheads Bound (Again) January 4

Screen shot 2013-12-20 at 9.56.54 AMLet’s see if I can surprise some of you and write something largely positive about David Cook today on his 31st birthday…

Staring with that Cooks says his move to Nashville should not be seen as a sign that he’s trying to follow in the footsteps of fellow Missourian Sheryl Crow and go country.

In fact, Cook has been touring clubs and debuting a slate new rock oriented songs that he hopes to string together for an album next year.

And to pretty positive acclaim. Continue reading

Sutherland: Money For Nothing & Checks For Free!

Watson's Girl & Zeiman(1)

Former KC Star publisher Mark Zieman – seen here with the Watson’s Girl – is taking down $1.4 million a year as a McClatchy VP

With apologies to British rockers Dire Straits, the creators of the 1985 hit with the lyrics ever so slightly modified, the above-referenced line could be the slogan of the Kansas City Star’s own Barbara Shelly as she pushes for Medicaid expansion as a necessary part of Obamacare….

I was intrigued earlier this year when I saw on The Star’s “Faith Calendar” for Sunday, March 10th, that “Barb Shelly” (no introduction necessary) would be speaking that day at the Unitarian Universalist “Church” (sic).

It turns out that “Barb’s” remarks were the worship service and the subject of her remarks was “Struggling for The Affordable Care Act.” (Don’t you just hate how the Religious Right mixes politics and religion?)  Who was struggling only became clear when I got there.  As our gal Barb put it, she was the one struggling to get Obamacare implemented, as was her paper, by writing and publishing “countless unsigned editorials” on the need to expand Medicaid in Kansas and Missouri as part of Obamacare. Starbeams: Mom Posts Topless Pics, Erin Andrews, AIG, Mike Huckabee & Chinese Doctors

Erin-Andrews-flierA Wentzville, Mo mother was arrested for posting topless photos of her daughter in a hot tub.  On the bright side, she has been offered the tour manager position for Miley Cyrus.

The FDA is warning ADHD medication can cause persistent and painful erections.  How about a warning for Erin Andrews?

What a disappointment.  I thought “Saving Mr. Banks” was a movie about AIG.

Leftridge: Royals Offseason Moves A-Ok (Like the New Outfielder Aoki– Get it?)

Clearly, Omar Infante is thrilled to be a Royal

Clearly, Omar Infante is thrilled to be a Royal

Well, the Chiefs have locked up a playoff spot for official, and they’ve got an important game this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts (who likely figure to be KC’s first round opponent, too), but I’m sure another writer will post 1,200 confusing words about it all on this site as well as others. (If it makes you feel any better, our esteemed Editor in Chief will make KCC’s version slightly more palatable.)

Therefore, I won’t waste my time with such redundancies.

Instead, I’d like to briefly wrap up baseball’s winter meetings, where our own Kansas City Royals mostly played it cool. Unlike last year’s splash—where they traded away Babe Ruth Jr. for two years of James Shields and picked up Ervin “Reclamation Project” Santana for one—this was a much more subdued excursion. And quite honestly, that’s probably for the best. Continue reading

Glazer: Scribe Unleashes This Week’s NFL Picks

football-brainA few days ago I noted that the Chiefs were as high as No. 3 in the Power Rankings…

I was wrong.  Since then I found a site where they were ranked as high as No 2, trailing only Seattle. Naturally, I was called every name in the book when people went on ESPN and found them listed at No 6.

Thus I became a liar.

Hey guys, there are over 50 different accredited Power Rankings. You can go on Google and type “NFL Power Rankings, Chiefs highest power rankings 2013” or a million other variations and find power rankings more (or less) to your liking. So fou find one you like and stick with it.

Power Rankings don’t matter much.  Continue reading

Glazer: Scribe Says Filthy, X-Rated Comments Need To Go

canstockphoto13755705We’ve been reading a lot about vicious attacks on people’s wives and women on Tony’s Kansas City

Some of those kind of comments used to appear on KC Confidential before Hearne got tough on them and cleaned up the site.

In fact just this week a commenter on KCC threatened me with firearms. I’ll admit that some time ago after I got pummeled with family and personal threats, put downs and lies, I reached the point where I wasn’t going to take those things anymore. And I said I would be willing to meet anyone spewing that garbage wherever and whenever they wanted.  It culminated with a commenter by the name of smartman challenging me to a fight in Westport.

I showed up, he didn’t.  Continue reading

Glazer: Hot Topics — Scribe Calls Out TV Weather Wonks…Again

UnknownLast week’s bogus bad weather predictions that cost our city millions…

That’s because nobody went out Friday, even though the forecast bad weather never materialized. And this morning I watched in horror again as the very same weathermen and DJ’s who messed up last week repeated the same gloom and doom predictions for this weekend.

Friday, light rain, possibly turning to ice and creating dangerous driving conditions, you better stay in.  Saturday more rain, possible ice, and maybe 1 to 3 inches of snow late Saturday evening – they aren’t even sure when.

Translation: even if little or nothing happens, Kansas City night life will decrease by 25% this weekend based on those grim, early forecasts.  Continue reading

Hearne: Estate Sale Confidential; Wild Turkey Legs & Charlie Wheeler’s Mink

IMG_2519

Kathe Kaul models Charlie Wheeler’s Mink Skull Cap

Helping to hustle Blues Cruise vacations aboard ocean liners for KC Blues Society founder Roger Naber. Pretty normal sounding, huh? Think again.

“The cruises have always been wild, they’re basically blues festivals at sea with people from all over the world having a blast,” Kaul muses. “And doing anything conceivable they thought they could get away with.”

While Kaul’s current gig at Kathe Kaul Estate Sales no longer entails stumbling across triple X-rated activities on the high seas, it can still get pretty intense between Black Friday like showdowns between competing customers battling and embarrassing discoveries while sifting through people’s belongings.

“Let’s just say my client’s secrets stay with me,” Kaul says. “That’s my business; people trust me. But it’s actually crazier now.” Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘SAVING MR. BANKS’—Folksy Walt Disney vs Frosty P.L. Banks

saving-mr-banksThere really has never been a movie about the legacy of Walt Disney

SAVING MR. BANKS finally fills that void.

After all, Disney was the real life man who created what evolved into one of the most successful entertainment conglomerates in the world.

Mickey Mouse, amusement parks, the ABC Television Network, family cable channels, ESPN, the Disney Cruise Line—you get the picture.

Well, now the very company Walt founded has come up with a fascinating screenplay that gives us an insight into the persona of the man BEHIND the empireSAVING MR. BANKS explores Disney’s struggle to persuade author P.L. Travers to allow his studio to adapt her beloved Mary Poppins to the big screen.

Not an easy task. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘AMERICAN HUSTLE’—Unpredictable, Chaotic & Great Storytelling

13_2654_Sony_Form3_AdamsBanner_R9Dare I suggest that America’s current sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence—takes it to the next level in AMERICAN HUSTLE?

Her portrayal of frustrated housewife Rosalyn Rosenfeld has earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination in the current Golden Globes race. Come to think of it AMERICAN HUSTLE has already picked up a total of SEVEN Golden Globe nominations!

So what are you in for?

A 2 hour and 18 minutes long dark comedy that’s nothing short of terrific.

Prior to the first scene moviegoers are informed via an on-screen billboard that, “Some of this actually happened.”

That’s followed by an extended scene of a slightly overweight Christian Bale working on his bad 70’s comb over while gluing down patches of hair to his skull.

It pretty well sets the mood for what’s to follow. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘ANCHORMAN 2’—Keep Your Expectations in Check

imagesAt what point during the promotional cycle of a new film does hype become overkill and detrimental to the movie itself?

We may find out with ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES which took the fine art of super hype into the stratosphere.

Now the questions are:

1–Has Will Ferrell and company’s promotional overkill for the film peaked too early?

2–Can and does the movie live up to the media tsunami?

The answer to the first question should better be addressed in a few weeks. After all ANCHORMAN 2 is bound to open big. But will it have “legs?”

We’ll see……. Continue reading

Hearne: Post Death Paul Walker Talk Flies Fast & Furious

Screen shot 2013-12-18 at 10.16.17 AMThe dramatic death of Fast & Furious star Paul Walker continues to spark controversy…

But setting aside for a moment that police say speed was a contributing factor in his death – not exactly an admirable thing given Walker and his race car driver pal were on city streets – there’s been a flood of rumors, news and additional information to sort through.

Starting with the unfortunate report that Walker basically burned to death – albeit rapidly – and that at present, we’re about a third of the way through the up to 90 day time frame it may take to learn the exact cause of the crash. Continue reading

Hearne: Star Wars Johnson County — AMC vs Cinetopia

LG-Cinetopia-prairiefire-overland-park-kansas-architecture-01The battle lines are being drawn…

Kansas City-based AMC Theatres squaring off against newcomer Cinetopia in a Hollywood-esque fight to the finish for suburban supremacy at the movies.

KC Confidential‘s Jack Poessiger set the stage for a potential showdown by carefully measuring the distance between AMC’s Town Center and Cinetopia’s coming soon Overland Park 17. Just under two miles, the odometer of Poessiger’s trusty Mercedes indicated.

More than close enough to spark a showdown between the two theaters over something in the trade known as “playing day and date.”

Meaning both complexes get to play hot new releases like X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Hunger Games Mockingjay – Part 1 at the same time when they are released.

“That’ll be something to watch,” Poessiger says. “Whether AMC says to the film companies that they won’t play a movie if it plays at Cinetopia.”

Could happen. Continue reading

Glazer: This Year’s Chiefs No Longer Best Kept Secret

wpid-jamaal-charles-kansas-city-chiefsI usually wait until week’s end to do my predictions and talk about the Kansas City Chiefs

But I know that after the last couple weeks of successes, area fans are excited again about our boys in red.  Know what?  They should be.  The Chiefs are now No. 3 in the NFL power rankings, trailing only Seattle and San Francisco. And hard to believe as it is, Denver is No. 5.  I don’t quite agree with that assessment, but it’s close.

After Jamaal Charles five touchdowns Sunday, he’s already being talked about as possibly the Chiefs best offensive player of all time.  In fact, the words Hall of Fame are being mentioned. And while I think Charles is definitely an All-Pro, I believe it’s going to take a few more years before he’s anointed Best Chiefs Offensive Player Ever.  Continue reading
