Starbeams:Fat Chiefs Fans, Roofing KCI, Lorde Knows & Kelly’s Mom

lordeOpponents of the new KCI one-building terminal got enough signatures to force a public vote on the matter.  I, for one, am hoping they keep the current airport design and cover it with a giant rolling roof.

*******

Pray that the Chiefs beat Indy for the sake of our waistlines!  A report in “Psychological Science” says sports fans eat more junk food when their team loses.  Fans flock to high-fat, high-sugar comfort foods to deal with their emotions when their favorite team is defeated.

THIS JUST IN:  My mom is threatening to sue the Chiefs if they lose the game and my weight increases.

Whinery: Good Riddance 2013 — My Politician of the Year Awards

p34_DWI22303Did anything go right this year?

Not really. I don’t want to be all doom and gloom, but even the good stuff like the Snowden revelations about the awesome powers of the National Security Agency (NSA) did little but give solace to those of us who’ve been talking about Big Brother for years by allowing us to say “I told you so” to our detractors.

That said, I don’t see politicians or the Courts doing anything much to try and save the rights ensconced in the 4th Amendment. The Drug War has pretty much obliterated our rights against unreasonable search and seizure anyway.

Now on to my Year-End Awards… Continue reading

Sutherland: ‘Monuments Men’ & The Nelson-Atkins Museum

The-Monuments-Men-2013-Movie-Title-Banner-650x457There’s a movie coming out in February starring George Clooney called “Monuments Men.”

It’s based on a non-fiction book about the U.S. Government’s efforts to recover art looted by the Nazi’s during World War II, “The Monuments Men:  Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History,” by Robert M. Edsel.

The book describes how an elite group of specialists (American and British museum directors, curators, and art historians) was formed into a military unit charged with ferreting out and bringing back the cultural patrimony purloined by noted aesthetes like Luftwaffe chief Hermann Goering.  The movie version (which also stars Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, and Bill Murray) is a fictionalized depiction of those men and women who did work of such critical importance while the war raged around them. Hearne: Craig Glazer Dissects What’s Wrong With Kansas City

UnknownTalk about reducing us to our essence…

Forget all that City of Fountains bs. Nevermind how great we think the barbecue is. Or how “liveable” Kansas City is. Truth be known, for the past 50 years we’ve been saddled with a small time loser mentality and from the looks of things, that’s not about to change anytime soon.

So says, everybody’s favorite Scribe, Craig Glazer.

“We’re never first at anything that matters,” Glazer says. “We need to get off this evil do-gooder thing because nobody really wants to come here. The handful of great sports players we’ve had couldn’t wait to leave here – Joe Montana, Tony Gonzalez, Marcus Allen – all gone. This city needs some action because we don’t stand for anything, we really don’t. We lose, because we’re boring. Kansas City needs to take the blinders off and be realistic. We need to grow up and prosper. Like our antiquated stripper laws that they don’t enforce.

“We’re a town of Mike Sweeney‘s and Billy Butlers. We’re not a town of Mark McGwires and Jose Cansecos. We’re a town of Matt Cassels and Trent Greens. Not a town of Tom Bradys and Peyton Mannings. Or Johnny Football – he wouldn’t fit in here because he’s not boring. Continue reading

Sounds Good: Live Music Options for New Year’s Eve

Well, it’s time to take 2013 out behind the woodshed.

That was quick, eh?  Yet some things seem so distant.

Remember the Harlem Shake?  Barely, thank god.  Yep, it’s time to move onward and upward, and if you’re not into any of the events Lefty touted in his previous column, and are more interested in the bar scene and some live music, well, here are a handful of solid options.   Continue reading

Hearne: Topeka Taking on Kansas City in Flights to Chicago

airplanetakeoff2Anyone out there hearing footsteps?

Because if you do, it could be because Topeka is creeping up on Kansas City. I’m kidding, of course. Hey, I lived there for three months two years ago, so I’m fully acquainted with how lame that town is. And that doesn’t even include that Sam Brownback and Fred Phelps call T-Town their home.

Nope, the real problem with Topeka is it’s too small to have the amenities of a big city like KC and too big and bogusly political to have the charm of a small town.

Oh but now, according to Brownback and the Topeka Chamber of Commerce, the town is taking a step toward the big leagues by getting United Airlines to scramble two nonstops a day to and from Chicago out of Forbes Field aka the Topeka Regional Airport. Continue reading

New Jack City: Jack’s Best (& Worst) Nights of ‘Flickering’ in the Darkness

keri-russell-dark-skiesEverybody does those silly year-end Best Of lists…

I guess that’s because there’s not much else going on this late in the year. I wasn’t planning on doing one—but I got shamed into it.

Let me explain.

I don’t do BESTS or WORSTS because I’m not smart enough for that. I’ll leave that to those so-called schooled critics.

However, I know what I enjoyed during the past year—and what I suffered through— in many a dark auditorium.

So here then the films of 2013 that made going to the movies the most enjoyable for me. Continue reading

Leftridge: Last Minute Ideas for New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Happy-New-YearcoverConsider New Year’s Eve.

It’s not a holiday in the truest sense of the word. It doesn’t involve the birth of a savior, the independence of a country or a gigantic rabbit rising from the dead in order to gallivant about town laying giant, chocolate eggs. It’s little more than a turn of the calendar, the ever-evolving passage of our existence. There’s nothing we can do to stop it, so I’m not entirely sure why people get such a collective boner about it.

One minute, we’re in one year, and the next, we’re not.

It’s arbitrary and ridiculous, but people really seem (or pretend) to enjoy it.

For some, it’s symbolic of a new beginning: a resolution to drop a vice, drop some weight or stop being such an insufferable asshole. For others, it’s simply an excuse to drink a little too much champagne, get unnaturally aggressive and possibly kiss someone they normally wouldn’t.

Hallelujah, amen. Continue reading

Glazer: Get Out of the House for Comedy & Football & Watch the Chiefs Lose

616341_487614994600663_421292964_oLike most Kansas Citians, you’ve probably been shopping, hanging with relatives or trapped at home over this past holiday week…

But now that the weather’s cleared up, it’s time to get out and raise some hell.  One thing sure to put a smile on your face would be going to one of the two Stanford’s Comedy Club locations here in Kansas City.

Enjoy former Kansas Citian comedian Jon Schieszer’s at the Legends Friday through Sunday with his hysterical sidekick Jeremiah Watkins from Los Angeles.

Stanford’s On Broadway, by the Uptown is featuring America’s youngest headlining comic, 18 year old Aaron Branch who beat out more than 100 regional comics to win Comic of the Year in 2012.  Aaron is honing his craft in Chicago with the famed Second City Improv Company and  has been compared to a young Will Smith and Kevin Hart.

If you’re like many, you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve yet.  Continue reading

Hearne: Will KU Football Suck Forever?

jonestown_story

Jonestown aka Lawrence

Lawrence is a town in which pretty much only one thing really matters…

And that one thing is KU basketball. Because for all practical purposes college basketball takes precedence over any and all else that goes down in this town, even the university itself. Jayhawk basketball is the tail that wags the school, the city, the citizenry, the alumnae and with rare exception each and every individual who resides here who didn’t attend K-State or Missouri.

Think I’m exaggerating? Walk a mile in my shoes.

While I attended the University of Arizona, it’s no secret I’ve always been partial to KU. Maybe because my dad went here for like one semester, its proximity to Kansas City or the charm of downtown Lawrence.

So it stands to reason that in my moving to Lawrence – albeit while retaining ultra close ties to KC on a weekly basis – I’ve become more smitten and more biased, in favor of all things Jayhawk. No doubt Missouri aficionados who’ve recoiled at some of the sports assessments made here by Craig Glazer and Brett Mosiman believe that to be true.

That said, let me remind you though of true blue KU lover and Lawrence resident Matt Donnelly‘s take on my appreciation of KU; that I view the love affair locals have with Bill Self the same way the Kool-ade drinkers of Jonestown did Jim Jones – as a cult.

Matt nailed it when he nailed me. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘THE WOLF OF WALL STREET’—From Penny Stocks to Sex, Power & Cocaine

leonardo-dicaprio-wolf-of-wall-street-trailerI’m going to gush about this one…

And why not, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is my favorite film – not just this holiday season – but for ALL of 2013

Where to begin?

Let’s start with the fact that the movie is based on the true story of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort who was eventually indicted for securities fraud and money laundering. He’s portrayed brilliantly in the film by Leonardo DiCaprio who’s mesmerizing performance has already earned him a GOLDEN GLOBE nomination for Best Actor.

DiCaprio’s character was about to enter the brokerage business under the guidance of senior (power) broker Matthew McConaughey whose ‘anything goes’ mending philosophy is something to behold.

But timing was terrible. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘WALTER MITTY’—A Fantasy Filled Balancing Act

Secret-Life-Walter-Mitty-Full-TrailerJudging by the marketing, one would believe THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY is this holiday’s perfect family comedy…

And it is—UP TO A POINT.

Directed by and starring Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty, the movie turns from relatively funny to (at times) downright weird.

Of course it’s based on James Thurber’s classic short story of a daydreamer who escapes his agonizingly dull life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action.

Actor Danny Kaye first brought Mitty to the screen in 1947.

In Ben Stiller’s version Mitty plays a photo archivist for LIFE MAGAZINE who can’t seem to locate the photo management wants to put on the cover of its final print edition. Continue reading

Hearne: Is Vince & Associates Holiday Display @ 103rd and Metcalf Dangerous?

6a010536b72a74970b0162fe4375f5970dIs it or isn’t it safe?

That’s the question that crossed my mind after reading Jack Poessiger‘s essay on Vince & Associates over-the-top holiday lighting display at 103rd and Metcalf in Overland Park.

The gaudy display been there for years and from the looks of it, seems to get bigger and brighter every year. Poessiger noted that he saw two near accidents in a couple day period while passing the display recently.

The Overland Park Police Department’s take?

“I know it very well,” says OPPD public information officer Gary Mason. “Off hand I don’t think we’ve had many accidents at that location and they have a sign directing people to park across the street at a church parking lot. But we really haven’t had many complaints. It’s been around for several years, so most people must think it’s kind of a positive thing.” Continue reading

Hearne: KC’s Oldest Fairy Princess Was Also Town’s First ‘Weather Hottie’

Carol Barta Fairy Princess

19 year-old Carol Barta as the Fairy Princess

And as outlined in yesterday’s Star Magazine by Cindy Hoedel, one of actress Carol Barta‘s first roles here was playing the Fairy Princess at Kline’s department store in downtown Kansas City. The year was 1956 and Barta, then 19, was living at home and yet to secure a full time boyfriend.

She landed the low-paying, part time gig based on her looks and the fact that she already owned a fairy princess-like dress. At that point in time it wasn’t so much of a contest as it is now, she says.

“It wasn’t like it is today where the girls vie for this almost like it’s a contest,” Barta says. “They have to have certain credentials like good grades and they have to have done some community service. And they don’t get paid.” Continue reading

Hearne: Don’t Look Now but The KC Confidential Christmas Wilding is Upon Us

somethingwicked500Something wicked this way comes…

As usual, KCC’s Matt Donnelly let the cat out of the bag early on a couple days ago. The KC Confidential Christmas Wilding is going down tomorrow – Monday night – from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Uptown.

And while it’s really not a public party per se, for some reason or another we have a nasty habit of semi-inviting readers and comments section personalities to stop by and speak their piece. Naturally, if that’s your intent, it’d be nice if you dashed off a note through the CONTACT US button top right on the home page to give us a heads up. Continue reading
