Hearne: The Heat is On Jewelry Empire Scion
The temperature seems to be rising on the scion of a legendary KC jeweler…
Rapidly. And while – as we’ve explored here – anything’s possible as far as a bust timetable is concerned should stories making the rounds prove true – increasingly the feeling is that this thing may be about to burst wide open…one way or another. There are just too many people in the local news media who’ve begun sniffing about for this story.
And still the jeweler in question is not returning my calls nor answering his telephone.
Meanwhile area police and justice department officials appear to be under increasing media pressure to make a move if there’s one to be made and release the story.
One local jeweler says he’s heard it involves “Internet drug purchases and previously missing pieces of jewelry from prominent local families.” Continue reading
Hearne: To Bust or Not to Bust, That is the Question
The odds of a Kansas City jeweler getting off the hook by cutting a deal with the Feds with no publicity whatsoever: in a word, slim.
So says two-time convicted felon and former special agent to the Kansas attorney general Craig Glazer, who as they say, has been there, done that. Even were the jeweler in question a first time offender, he’s still almost certain to spend some slam time along with a heaping helping of local news headlines to wash it down with, Glazer says.
Here’s how it works. Continue reading
Sounds Good: Jason Boland @ Granada, Black Joe Louis @ Knuckleheads
Elton John. Kanye West. Jack White. Lionel Richie.
What do these four dudes have in common? No, they’re not all gay. I don’t think they are, anyway.
They’re the four top headliners at this year’s edition of Bonnaroo, the mega-fest held in rural Tennessee for the past 15 years or so. And it’s the most eclectic lineup that I can recall to date. I mean, last year featured Sir Paul, Bjork, and R. Kelly. And a few years before it was Eminem, Buffalo Springfield, and Arcade Fire.
But Lionel Richie? What has become of you, Bonnaroo? Continue reading
Paul Wilson: Sandra Bullock – What Was Jesse James Thinking?
I admit it, I have a thing for Sandra Bullock…
It’s not that I think she’s the most attractive woman on earth. I mean, she’s okay. But I have friends who know her from the Austin music scene and I admire her normal girl approach to life apart from her star power.
Makes me wonder even more why Bullock’s ex, James James, couldn’t keep it in his pants. James traded his marriage to Bullock for a roll in the tattooed sack with slut puppy mistress, Michelle “Bombshell” McGee.
Not that any affair is without it’s share of deceit and bad intentions, but grrrl Swastika Michelle was so devoid of morals she decided the net worth gained from selling her story to the tabloids was worth more than what Bad Boy Jesse was doing for her downtown.
Clearly Bullock has judgement issues when it comes to dudes. Continue reading
Paul Wilson: Top Cop AG Holder Takes Cop Out
The No. 1 man in law enforcement says it’s OK to not enforce laws banning same-sex marriage if the laws discriminate in a way forbidden by the Constitution…
Speaking to the National Association of Attorneys General, Attorney General Eric Holder said that any decision not to defend individual laws in court must be “exceedingly rare” and reserved for “exceptional circumstances.” He indicated that legal challenges to gay marriage bans would qualify as such a circumstance.
I hate the term “slippery slope” but who’s to say what circumstance is worthy of not enforcing the law? Who has the authority to decide? This is a law, are we ok with the AG freelancing his personal beliefs over his oath? His reasoning, this time, is because he feels its discriminatory; I totally agree, but it’s still a law. Valentine: The Curious Case of ‘Deadbeat Congressman’ Emanuel Cleaver
Kansas City’s very own Congressman in Washington D.C., The Honorable Rev. Emanual Cleaver is having his wages garnished…
I’ve never heard of a sitting U.S. Congressman allowing his reputation to be tarnished like this. Since it would be so simple to avoid it.
And I always thought Congressmen were good at back room deals. Cleaver could have worked out a payment plan with Bank of America. It would have avoided the label Dead-beat Congressman.
Well, he’ got a payment plan now. Continue reading
Hearne: No Way Wichita State is No. 2
Does Wichita State really deserve to be ranked 2nd in college basketball?
No way, says sports scribe Craig Glazer of Stanford & Sons fame.
Not with a schedule as soft as the one the Shockers have played this season.
“They don’t play the schedule that Kansas or Michigan State plays,” Glazer says. “I think they’re a pretty good team, but no way they’re the second best team in the nation. I think it would be more fair to put them toward the bottom of the top 10.” Continue reading
Hearne: A Crime That Could Live (Quietly) in Infamy Forever
It’s a sexy story that could generate dramatic, bold headlines…
It’s also a tale that could retreat into the shadows of urban legend where only insiders ever fully knew and understood what really happened. Because when it comes to high crimes like drug and diamond smuggling, anything can happen.
Mum’s the word today among law enforcement officials contacted about the reported pending bust of a local jeweler. Documents have yet to be filed and everyone contacted – from Kansas City Police to the Department of Justice – say no news is no news. And that unless or until charges are actually unsealed and filed, they can neither confirm nor deny.
Here’s another possibility. Continue reading

Hearne: Arrest of Jewelry Store Scion Rumored
I’m going to continue to play this one close, but a prominent society matron emailed me this morning – out of the blue – and dropped the exact name of the rumored local jeweler said to be under investigation for smuggling drugs and diamonds. If true this will be the biggest Kansas City scandal of the new millennium to date.

Valentine: Feeling Like Einstein
He could do the math for Astrophysics to explain how the universe works. But he could not get the same math to work on both.
He died searching for a Unified Field Theory. I’m no Einstein, but I feel the same frustration when I read about “Climate Change” (formerly known as Global Warming).
Al Gore said the ice caps would be melted by last year. There are many current stories about the melting ice caps. It must be true. But NASA says, “The retention of more sea ice in September 2013 has increased the overall thickness and volume of the ice pack compared to recent years. Antarctic sea ice remains significantly more extensive than average.” Continue reading
Leftridge: TV Time: The Americans Returns Next Week, Will Probably be Good
If you haven’t watched the first season of FX’s The Americans, there’s still some time to check it out before Wednesday night’s premier. It’s not on Netflix, though, so you’ll have to find it on whatever virus-riddled Slovakian website you use to look at weird porn. (Upon further review, it appears that Amazon Prime Instant has the exclusive rights, so, well, there’s always that option, too.)
It’ll take you a little bit of time to power through the initial 13 episodes—it’s an hour long drama, as is the current fashion—but it’s worth it.
I’ll wait here…
…okay. How was it? Pretty great, right? Compelling? Expertly paced? Well-acted?
Exactly. Continue reading
Hearne: Dreadful Football Program Starting to Take Toll on KU Basketball
The poor play of the University of Kansas football team is starting to cause difficulties for the school’s vaunted basketball program.
Take the smackdown of KU’s so-called Fieldhouse Apartments.
The outlandishly expensive, $17.5 million dollar apartment complex represents a failed recruitment tool schmooze for KU basketball coach Bill Self.
“Housing, where our student-athletes reside now, is way, way, way, way behind what the competitors would be housing their student-athletes in, in a big way,” Self has stated. “In order for us to maintain and even exceed what we’ve been doing, there are certain things that have to be done…Bells and whistles are very, very important…It’s for the benefit, and certainly for the development, of the student-athletes.”
However a Kansas Legistlative Committee shot down KU athletics request for financing.
The reason why? Continue reading

Hearne: How Embarrassing to Live in Kansas
Few Kansans embrace the word “flyover” when referencing our corner of the earth…
And rightly so; it’s a pejorative term used by east and west coasters to describe the vast wasteland we losers are stuck living in. A wasteland that cool people on the coasts must transverse in order to strike civilization on the other side of the country.
That said, college basketball aside, it’s not like we’re doing ourselves any favors image wise by enacting, or trying to enact embarrassing, goofy laws that let people know that we think…
