Hearne: Craig Glazer Calls Out Chiefs, GM as ‘Losers’ for Blowing NFL Draft

JohnnyFootballPardon the interruption but the Scribe is pissed, really pissed…

The Kansas City Chiefs are born losers and totally suck. So says, Stanford & Sons main man Craig Glazer, a longtime follower of the game and amateur sports handicapper.

Take the team’s first round draft pick of Auburn defensive end Dee Ford.

“What does that say about the Chiefs ineptitude?” Glazer says. “They’re losers, man. That draft pick was absurd. I have no other words other than, blithering idiots.

“Let me get this straight; the current Chiefs quarterback wants out of here and they go out and pick an undersized defensive end that injury prone and a concert pianist, as if that matters. There were a couple of great wide receivers available and god knows we need that. It’s another classic, mind-boggling Chiefs move.”

On second thought… Continue reading

Sounds Good: Lyle Lovett @ Uptown, KS Food Truck Fest @ Lawrence Warehouse Arts District

You can’t keep a dead man down, apparently…

Next week, Xscape, the second posthumous Michael Jackson album, will be released. Critics received an advanced screening of the record at a private party, and their reviews have been somewhat mixed.  I’d say the majority is in the camp that this is a real MJ record, while a decent-sized minority sees the release as only capable of tarnishing the musical legend’s legacy.

Either way, don’t think for a second that there’s not going to be a “new” album rolling out every few years for the next several decades.  Word is, Jackson has a massive amount of unreleased recordings and demos that never quite made the cut.

I haven’t heard the record yet, but I suppose I can make my own judgment next week…   Continue reading

Valentine: Consider the Source & Dismiss the Facts?

DearLeaderWe live in a time where we often dismiss facts by considering the source…

For example, the Obama administration’s first move on any bad news has usually been to caution against watching Fox News. So we listen to that warning and often never look at the facts. Another common tactic for the intellectually lethargic is to find one wrong detail then dismiss the rest without any additional thought.

Last week, North Korea issued a report on The USA’s Human Rights abuses. There is a strong urge to just consider the source and refuse to look at the facts. Let’s resist that lazy urge and look closer at some of what was presented.

“Under the citizenship act, racialism is getting more severe in the U.S. The gaps between the minorities and the whites are very wide in the exercise of such rights to work and elect.”

Can this be true? Continue reading

Leftridge: Well, it’s the NFL Draft, or Whatever

draftcoverI officially don’t give a shit about the NFL Draft.

Maybe it’s the fact that it now seems to be a month-long process teeming with pre-draft shows leading up to the actual event.

Video vignettes about how a 400-pound orphan from the mean streets of Minneapolis overcame the odds to become a superstar after walking on at the University of Schenectady. Excruciatingly long ESPN: Behind the Balls pieces about the scrappy quarterback who, despite having one leg an inch shorter than the other, defied skeptics by becoming the starting left tackle at Teddy Roosevelt Community College, and now, holy shit, he’s got a chance to go in the seventh round!

Or maybe it’s because the whole production is now about pageantry instead of practicality. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: Yuppie Warfare Against Fraternity in ‘Neighbors’

Neighbors-movieProducers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are a laugh factory…

Their specialty: raunch comedy, including previous outings such as KNOCKED UP, SUPERBAD, THE GUILT TRIP and THIS IS THE END.

And let’s be clear, since BRIDESMAIDS raunch has become the new norm.

In NEIGHBORS it’s a basic family versus frat romp – a tale of two parents (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) with an infant daughter moving into what they expected to be the perfect home in the perfect neighborhood.

So far. So good.

However new neighbors are moving in next-door.

As in the Delta Psi Beta fraternity that’s hell bent on debauchery and about to turn the hood into party central. Continue reading

Whinery: Reading the Tea Leaves in North Carolina & Beyond

There was a Republican primary election on Tuesday to see who gets to face incumbent Democrat Senator Kay Hagan in the Fall…

ToddAiken

Akin

I don’t want to get carried away being always aware of how Republicans can screw up a sure thing, but thus far it looks like the GOP will be taking this seat from the Dems.

Why you ask?

First off, the winner, Thom Tillis is a solid candidate – no Todd Akin here. As the Speaker of the State House., Tillis is a somewhat moderate and congenial fellow. And even though the Dems spent $6 million trying to destroy this man he still got 45% of the vote in a crowded primary. They were so desperate that an ad was produced in which Tillis said ObamaCare was a “great idea,” even though Tillis said he was being sarcastic.

The Democrats are toast this fall,  mark my words.  Continue reading

Hearne: Journal World Columnist Calls Out KU for Lying

nadaYou gotta love PR people…

You know, the folks who pride themselves on putting one over on the general public and mild-mannered journalists almost as worried about not offending anyone in a position of “power” as they are of getting laid off.

Take the case of KU point guard  Naadir Tharpe. In an announcement last week crafted by KU, Tharpe said he was leaving the team to move back east to be closer to his two year-old daughter who has health issues.

“Naadir has been a good player for us in his three years here,” Self is quoted in the release from KU. “But we also respect the fact that he wants to be closer to his daughter.”

One guy and one guy alone – Lawrence Journal World columnist Tom Keegan – had the guts to call bullshit on KU for its phoned-up quotes in the release about the reasons behind Tharpe’s departure.

And I can assure you that virtually nobody else halfway in the know is buying the excuse KU was serving up. Continue reading

Hearne: Joe Lauria & The Strange Succession of KC Weather Wonks

20140504_183546Face it, television weather anchors are an odd lot…

Think about it.

Can anybody remember one who wasn’t? I mean, a successful, popular one. Yeah, there’s KCTV‘s Gary Amble who on the surface appears to be a regular guy. Until you remember he’s looney toon Michelle Bachmann‘s kid brother. Besdies, Amble’s not exactly wildly successful, given he barely lasted four years at Channel 5’s weather helm before being replaced by known nutball, Katie Horner.

Shall we continue?

Anybody remember that strange-seeming dude at Channel 9 and Channel 4 named Dave Dusik? Dusik left WDAF under a cloud after it was reported by a national business pub that he traded commodities using his TV weather predicting skills. Where do you suppose Dusik is now?  I can’t find him. Continue reading

Donnelly: Sporting in Best Form of the Year Against Columbus

For a clash involving the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, it couldn’t have been set up more perfectly:

DSC_3592

Photos by Alex Jinks

Sunday.  80 degrees.  3 in the afternoon.  Grills smoking.  Ring ceremony.  Just about perfect.

And Sporting KC started about just perfect, as well.  They were high pressing as far up the pitch as I’ve seen them.  They were pressuring everywhere, even running down Columbus‘ keeper several times.

“Start to finish, an excellent performance by us,” said KC boss Peter Vermes after the convincing 2-0 win.  “I think it’s the best performance of the year for us.”

Leftridge: April Royals Recap: The Kids Are Alright

KC_1280x720_4umw588h_0bfgo98hThe Royals’ month of April was almost exactly how I would have scripted it, if someone came along and asked me to script how this season would start. (And yes, I understand that, much like the hypothetical situation of someone putting a gun to your head and demanding that you choose a single breakfast cereal for the rest of your life, it seems bizarre and unlikely that someone would have asked me to write a movie about the first month of the Royals’ 2014 season.) But had it happened, I would have gotten it mostly pretty close.

I would have thought that finishing the month 14-12 and in second place of the AL Central would have been about right; this is, after all, a team that I’ve continually said is only slightly above average.

I would have also predicted that the offense would struggle and the bullpen wouldn’t be as good as it was last year. Check, and check. (The less said about White Sox rookie phenom Jose Abreu finishing April with more homeruns than the entire Royals squad, the better, and this bullpen—with the exception of the closer—is shakier than an epileptic at a Pink Floyd laser-light show.)

But I’m happy to report, however, that I’ve been wrong, too.   Continue reading

Hearne: Chihuahua Parade Sunday @ Barney Allis Goes for Guinness Record

Why wait for Halloween to do something really weird but legal?

CPlogo

Original art by Mark Valentine

This Sunday check out Mark Valentine‘s annual Chihuahua Parade and help catapult the event into the Guinness Book of Records as the “World’s Largest Costumed Dog Parade.

It all goes down at the Barney Allis Plaza, 12th and Central in Kansas City, MO.

Dogs and their handlers will parade around the downtown park without ever touching paw to the street, Jack FM will broadcast a live remote and over 30 vendors will be on hand.

Humans get in free, but a $5 per dog entry fee will go to Great Plains SPCA which operates two of no-kill shelters in the area.

Valentine’s inspiration for the parade?

Jack Goes Confidential: Spidey Spins Fun Marvel Adventure

spider-man-stuntTHE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is a ton of action, emotions and fun even though it’s about 20 minutes too long…

Two hours of the web-slinging would’ve been plenty—for me at least. (I saw the ending approaching at least three times only for the movie to keep going, and going and going)

But hey, this Spidey marks the official kick-off to Hollywood’s summer movie season and should do the industry proud.

I’m expecting an $80 million+ weekend at the domestic box office.

This second chapter of Marvel’s reboot brings back Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in a storyline of the legacy with heavy emphasis on his family secrets.

The story covers Spidey being abandoned by his parents as a boy and finding out how he became the person he is today. A quest regarding his parents’ disappearance leads him to OSCORP and on a collision course with his father’s former partner, Doctor Curt Conners and his alter ego.

So are we talking less action here? Continue reading

Paul Wilson: Hy-Vee Wants to Hy-Jack Leawood

PeggyDunn

Peggy Dunn

It’s my personal favorite main line grocery chain. It’s not Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, but as far as an everyday grocery store goes, Hy-Vee is for me.

I was at Hy-Vee’s new palace of a store in Olathe on day two of its operation.

And among other things, it houses a gorgeous, contemporary Asian restaurant, a deli, and every cuisine known to man – all ready to carry out – a bar even!

Hey, what’s not to like about a bar in the grocery store?

It gives us guys something to do while hanging with the wife at the store. And what a great business development tool – you sit down at the bar, throw back a few and buy three times as much as you ever intended.

However, that’s not what today’s story is about. Continue reading

Sounds Good: Split Lip @ Bottleneck, Radkey @ Replay, Nathaniel Rateliff @ Czar, Love Garden B-Day @ Granada

Colfax cover artNew Record of the Week
:  Colfax by The Delines.

This Portland group was formed recently by novelist/songwriter Willy Vlautin, of the legendary alt-country band, Richmond Fontaine.  It features road-weary lead vocals from Amy Boone (Damnations), and band members Sean Oldham (Richmond Fontaine), Jenny Conlee (Decemberists), Tucker Jackson and Freddy Trujillo.

Vlautin wrote all the tunes specifically for Boone, in a style that they’re calling retro-country-soul.  It’s a mournful album that tells stories about the down-and-out, the never-were, and other kinds of assorted, broken characters.

And, oh yeah, you can listen for free right here.  I recommend I Won’t Slip Up.  Do it, you’ll feel better. Continue reading

Glazer: Face it, Clippers Owner Donald Sterling is the Happiest Man on the Earth

donald-sterlingClippers’ owner Donald Sterling may be one of the most miserable human beings out there, but he’s still protected by the same laws and rights that all of us are…

Which include freedom of speech, private conversation and his own opinion.

This guy is probably on Cloud 9 because he’s center stage in the media glare and with his high-priced LA attorneys will likely win his case against the NBA.  Remember NBA by-laws, which are a bit thin in this case, do not supersede the U.S. Constitution let alone the rights granted to all Americans.

First of all, his taped-conversation was private and inadmissible in a court of law.

Secondly, they may decide to play the tape anyway because in many ways it defends Sterling.  Continue reading

Hearne: Worshipping at the Altar of IKEA & Being Better Than…

610_1361990509-1Small world…

A year ago while vacationing in Southern California, I did pretty much the same thing Pitch top gun Steve Vockrodt just did in Denver; I checked out a couple of IKEA  stores to try and get a handle on why its coming to Merriam seemed like such a big deal to so many locals.

Kansas City Star business columnist Joyce Smith even raved about its meatballs, as if pilgrimages might be made to the do-it-yourself Swedish furniture retailer’s bargain-priced cafeteria solely to partake of the fifteen meatball $7.99  special. So you know, I tried ’em and, eh, no big deal. It didn’t help that shortly thereafter IKEA’s meatballs were slammed with a horse meat scandal.

I digress.

Here’s the deal though, as Vockrodt found out, you diss IKEA here at your own risk. Continue reading
