Whinery: The Week in FUBAR

Saddam HusseinWhat a week for Murphy’s Law

If something could go wrong for the “Powers that Be” it did! First and foremost, in my humble opinion anyway, Iraq has gone straight to hell. If you have a strong stomach- go to Live Leak and checkout the videos of the absolute indiscriminate killings of civilians…

It’s brutal.

ISIS, the moniker of the rebels taking over Iraq, are just driving around with AK-47s hanging out the windows of their SUVs, gunning people down in cold blood. I hate too say “I told you so” but I TOLD YOU SO!

Violence begets violence… Continue reading

Hearne: Ding, Dong, Wilks Broadcasting On Way Out of KC Market

The Wizard Of OzHere’s a news story almost certain to result in zero shedding of tears…

Because at long last Wilks Broadcasting has reportedly struck a deal to sell its cluster of local radio stations and exit the Kansas City market.  The stations include, Mix 93.3 FM, KFKF FM, KBEQ FM and KCKC FM.

The pending sale to Steel City Media in Pittsburgh couldn’t have come soon enough for many current and former staffers at Wilks’ Kansas City stations.

That’s because Wilks – which bought the stations in January 2007    – is known to purchase groups of underperforming stations, slash expenses, boost revenues and then “flip” or sell the stations for a profit.

Unlike Entercom which is known for buying and operating the stations long term. Continue reading

Hearne: KFKF Tops May 2014 Radio Ratings, KCMO AM on Life Support

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 2.16.21 PMThe May 2014 radio rankings and ratings are in…

And by a slim margin country music station KFKF-FM continues to top the charts…even after a steady, three month decline. Speaking of country music, the combined ratings of the three top country stations in the market adds up to just over 18 percent. That compares to a combined 16.5 share for Kansas City’s three leading rock stations, supporting the contention that Country is King in Kansas City.

However the success of country is not limited to here in the hinterlands.

Hardly.

Rolling Stone magazine – the iconic bible of rock music – just came out with its “Country Issue” in which it announced the launch of a new website, RollingStoneCountry.com and the opening of a Nashville office. Serious stuff.

And check out the issue’s money quote by country crooner Eric Church: “If Bruce Springsteen came out now, he’d live in the country world.”

Meanwhile, back at the bottom of the barrel, KC’s five month old Adult Album Alternative station KRBG FM The Bridge is nowhere to be found, and not just in the top 20 stations. It isn’t so much as garner a mention in Nielsen Audio’s list of 16 “other stations located in the market.”

I know, I know, ratings don’t matter for not-for-profit stations, all they need to do is raise money via donations from listeners. To which I respectfully ask,  what listeners?

Anyway, on with the show… Continue reading

22-Jump-Street-5Sometimes sequels can be funnier than the original…

It doesn’t happen often but that’s what we’ve got THIS week at the movies.

Can they crack the case? Continue reading

Hearne: Lefsetz Rides Again With Last Week’s Greatest Hits

130501152342-john-oliver-comedy-central-story-top

John Oliver

Play it again, Bob…

Seems some of you have been pointing your thumbs up to the occasional weigh ins by entertainment lawyer / blogger Bob Lefsetz. It’s definitely a little inside baseball on much of his writings and as Matt Donnelly pointed out to me at Wakarusa last weekend while complimenting Lefsetz, he’s no spring chicken, but he does have some thought provoking takes.

Here are a few highlights from Lefsetz sum up of  sat week’s most provocative topics:

BEST CLIP OF THE WEEK

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO): Climate Change Debate”:

“I watch no television other than Bill Maher. Oh, I pay for it, just call Time Warner and they’ll remind you if you excise TV from your bill, your Internet price will soar. But I’m now going to tune into John Oliver‘s program, all because of this clip.

He substituted on the “Daily Show” when Jon Stewart went off to make a movie, what a mistake that was, TV reaches everybody, films reach nobody, but still, I wasn’t paying attention.

Until this.

I used to say only animated characters could speak the truth, but today we rely on comedians too. Continue reading

Hearne: U.S. Men’s Team Coach Blew It When He Cut Landon Donovan

klinsmann (1)Look around, there’s not a lot of optimism where the U.S. Men’s National Team is concerned for this year’s World Cup

The games kick off tomorrow with host country Brazil taking on Croatia and the U.S. team going against Ghana Monday in a field being referred to as  the “group of Death” (with Portugal and Germany).

So it makes perfect sense for USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann to field the best 11 players available, right?

Not so fast.

In a controversial move Klinsmann cut what some believe to be the best player ever to play for the United States, Landon Donovan. The news late last month came as a shock to many soccer fans, however from October until the late May cut by Klinsmann, Donovan scored zero goals for his LA Galaxy against lesser quality MLS players. Far lesser than the ones he would likely have faced in the World Cup.

So was cutting Donovan a good move, the right move?

“Well no, the thing is he’s one of the best 23 players in the United States undoubtedly,” says KCC soccer scribe Matt Donnelly. “It comes down to a personality conflict between him and the coach. I don’t think that anybody can say he’s not in the top 23 and he’s probably in the top 11.” Continue reading

Donnelly: Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips Remain Defiant at Wakarusa 2014

The Flaming Lips’ Wakarusa promo photo, with Scurlock on the right

The Flaming Lips played a prime slot at this year’s Wakarusa Festival – Friday at 10:00 pm on the Main Stage.  But the band’s music and customary spectacle was a bit overshadowed.

I’ll explain.

For those of you that have not been following along with The Flaming Lips drama that unfolded over the last month, allow me to briefly fill you in.  The Wakarusa story will make more sense that way.

In highly simplified form, here’s what happened. Continue reading

Paul Wilson: Which Do You Prefer, Gun Control or Bad Guy Control?

pistol-aimed-at-viewer_mainSorry for the recent departure of your well-coiffed scribe, but he’s been a little busy on all fronts…

Between record breaking box sales, buying a new home, dealing with pool contractors and concrete people, I’ve been tied up. But something crossed my desk this morning I couldn’t pass up and I had to bless my devoted fans, readers and disciples with a bit of wisdom on the topic.

Over on the South side of our sister city of St Louis, one suspect is dead and another is in critical condition after allegedly holding a gun to a teen’s head.

At about 11pm Monday, a 17 year old girl leaves her home, headed out to get something from her car. Two unknown men grabed her, pointed a gun to her head and demanded that she take them inside her home.

Her dad was inside the house, saw what was taking place, got his own gun and waited for them to get closer.

“He was holding her hostage. She was a human shield. So I did what I had to do,” he said.

Asked how he had the confidence to pull the trigger when the man was holding his daughter that way, he said, “It wasn’t like that. It just happened. I didn’t have no choice. He had my daughter so I did what I had to do.” Continue reading

Hearne: ‘Big Sexy’ Jason Whitlock Called Out as Uncle Tom, Sambo

wx2udlc9a8t1jpqnjgqcJason Whitlock is the sportswriter Kansas Citians loved to hate…

Until his propensity for burning bridges and getting fired lead to a nasty split with the Kansas City Star four years back. The falling out left a twisted trail of acrimony and ugly accusations, similar to how most of Whitlock’s media divorces have gone down.

Whitrlock continued to blog for Fox Sports – albeit sans the seven figure paycheck he was rumored to be receiving – until ESPN recycled him last August with the intention of Jason lording over a blog for promising young, black sportswriters.

“It sounds like an unrealistic concept,” a former Star editor told me at the time. “Pretty bizarre to set Jason up as mentor/role model, unless he’s matured some. Hopefully Jason will put  these  younger  writers  on a good path, not a path to getting off-track.”

A year later and Big Sexy has yet to debut the so-called Black Grantland and the term Uncle Tom is beginning to surface among fellow black sportswriters. Continue reading

Hearne: Sleeping with The Pitch (Not the Enemy, The Pitch)

6799_138_zForget everything you’ve ever heard or read that’s bad about Westport…

Noticed that new 816 Hotel on Westport Road? It’s nestled between the Flea Market and Relax Magic massage parlor, just across the street from bluestem and Baked in Kansas City.

It’s a hip, new getaway where you can spend a couple of nights at a reasonable rate, catch an hour rub for 30 bucks, sample one of KC’s best burgers, get a killer cup of coffee, and fresh baked goods, experience upscale dining at one of KC’s finest then check out enough cool boutiques, specialty shops, coffee joints and restaurants to make you completely forget you’re knee deep in the heart of Kansas City’s party zone.

And everything’s in walking distance, no less. Continue reading

Starbeams: O.J. Simpson, Peyton Manning, KCPL Building & ‘Believin’

last great run by a broncoWe are coming up on the 20th anniversary of the OJ Simpson event.  Thankfully, my kids hear about a slow, white bronco and they think of Peyton Manning.

                                                    *******

“Don’t Stop Believin” has replaced “Friends In Low Places” as the 6th inning song at Kauffman Stadium.  It narrowly beat out, “Say Something, I’m Giving Up On You.” Continue reading

Stomper: Dissecting Prisoner Exchanges with ‘Terrorists’ & Bowe Bergdahl

Taliban FightersHey kids, I thought I’d take another whack at a somewhat political topic and toss it up for grabs…

This time out, the topic relates to the prisoner exchange and the return of US soldier Bowe Bergdahl.  I can see both sides on this one but lean towards support of President Obama‘s actions.

And frankly, I have a lot more questions than I have answers.

I’ve done a small amount of research on the topic so it could be said that my knowledge on this is a mile wide but only an inch deep.  Naturally I expect to be criticized for my reasoning.

My biggest concern relates to the U.S. negotiating with terrorists when we have publicly stated that we don’t do that.  Continue reading

Hearne: Star Columnist Condemns Cynics to ‘Dementia Hell’ (But What About Skeptics?)

article-1300754-05B8AE06000005DC-942_468x286What’s in a word?

Plenty when it comes to sorting out the nuances of alternative and/or investigative journalism. Because in order to excel at either of the above two, one needs to bring to the table what amounts to – let’s just call it – a suspicious mind.

In yesterday’s Star Magazine, my pal Cindy Hoedel – one of the world’s nicest human beings – writes about a study published by the American Academy of Neurology that found that cynics were two and one-half times as likely to develop dementia.

“As a card-carrying optimist, I have two reactions to the finding: Relief at not being in the high-risk group, and surprise that no one hit on the connection between cynicism and dementia before,” Cindy writes. “I’ve always thought of cynicism as its own type of dementia, a self-administered toxic drip that skews perception and stunts learning.”

Now back to the journalism connects…

There’s a fine line between what some people view as cynicism and skepticism. Continue reading

Donnelly: Wakarusa Road Trip 2014 – Day One

The annual pilgrimage to Mulberry Mountain and the Wakarusa Festival went off this year without a hitch.

Yes, there was a little rain, but not even close to the kind of storms they weathered last year when the festival had to evacuate the grounds and people had to get their cars towed out.  Just a nice little drizzle each day to cool everything off.

I didn’t even get my boots out.

And would you believe, I hung with the hardcore HCJ for one night of the big shebang at String Cheese and the Turnpike Troubadours?

But let’s start from the beginning. Continue reading

Hearne: The Curious Case of The Monkees’ 2014 Tour

IMG_4112Oldies acts can be disappointing, seriously disappointing…

Trust me on this, I’ve seen my share. The worst maybe was a Guess Who show at the Uptown years ago with only the lowly bass player remaining from the original cast. For the record, it wasn’t my show – nor did I buy a ticket – I was consulting on promotions for a former Uptown Theater owner. Otherwise, no way would I have been there.

I digress.

To call the TV show born band The Monkees a super group would be a gross exaggeration. That said, a combination of  widespread exposure on a popular television sitcom (that ran for two years starting in 1967) and a string of – let’s call it, seven hit singles – elevated the fatuous foursome to dizzying heights that many would categorize as iconic.

Especially Baby Boomers transitioning through their teens and 20s in the late 1960s as well as subsequent watchers of the show’s ubiquitous reruns.

All of which made for a packed house – and a seated show – last week at the Uptown.  Continue reading

New Jack City: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow at KCI

bye-bye-birdieSpace available at KCI

Two ticket/check-in counters at Kansas City International Airport will be going dark in the not too distant future as a pair of major airline brands fade into history.

The first to disappear for good will be The Big A – as in AirTran – which Southwest purchased some time back.

However, Southwest has pretty well kept AirTran operating separately and is only gradually absorbing it into the mainstream Southwest.

According to Travel Weekly, Southwest has set December 28, 2014 as the date for the last flight of its AirTran subsidiary. The final flight will be AirTran # 001 from Atlanta to Tampa, retracing the airline’s first flight as ValuJet in 1993. Continue reading

Leftridge: Draft Happens, Royals Draft a Player

finnyBecause the Kansas City Royals didn’t absolutely suck at everything last year, the were sullied with the 17th pick in this year’s draft. And with that pick, they selected left-handed pitcher Brandon Finnegan from TCU. Finnegan—a diminutive man who was busy majoring in criminal justice before this baseball thing got real—is a polished college arm with a fastball that can reach the high-90’s, above average off-speed stuff, and a recent history of shoulder inflammation.

So forgive me if I didn’t piss my pants in jubilance.

Couple the injury with the fact that I have absolutely zero faith in Dayton Moore’s draft picks, and it was mostly a gigantic yawn. This organization’s player development failures have conditioned me to not care; such is the life of a Kansas City Royals’ fan. Continue reading

Hearne: Stanford’s Legends Closing July 1, Reopening in Overland Park

stanfordslookThis just in…

It’s official, after 8 1/2 years  Stanford & Sons will close its doors early next month at The Legends in KCK and reopen in August in Overland Park’s Rosana Square at 119th and Metcalf.

“Well, we moved here in 2007 and the hope back then – and it seemed believable at the time – was that the area around Legends in KCK would grow in proportion to the shopping and entertainment and sports district,” says Stanford’s main man Craig Glazer. “But unfortunately, in 2008 the recession stopped the housing market and plans for the area to add 50,000 people died. And eight years later, it’s grown almost zero.

“That caused the leadership of The Legends to become more family oriented and they got away from nightlife. So now they’re pushing morse retail shopping and daily oriented activities. And that seems to be working for them, but when we close on a Friday or Saturday night there’s no place to go. The dance clubs are long gone and there is no adult activity except for the casino which is a few miles away. So we’re the only thing here.”

Hence a move to higher ground… Continue reading
