Hearne: Lefsetz vs H.C. on ‘Why Things Don’t Last’

on_air_signWhy things no longer last? Let’s let entertainment and media overlord Bob Lefstez get things rolling:

1. Channel Overload

Used to be there were 5,000 albums a year and only a few got on the radio and if you didn’t get airplay or press, you were doomed. Now there are a zillion products, all easily promoted online, and unless your friend verifies quality and interest or a track becomes a phenomenon, you don’t care. And suddenly most people don’t care and it’s gone.

There’s a fiction perpetrated by record labels that terrestrial radio reaches everybody.

However the truth is with so many other options for hearing music. Radio is a sliver of the marketplace. To make it everywhere you need not only radio, but video and… Actually, that which is ubiquitous lives online, not on terrestrial radio. Terrestrial radio is a ghetto. You can cross over from terrestrial radio to the internet. You can rise simultaneously from both, but to be gigantic – known by everybody – you need to make it on both terrestrial radio and the internet. Whereas you can spike quite nicely online and function well without terrestrial radio. Terrestrial radio is the dollop of cream atop the sundae. Online is on demand, terrestrial radio is not. And that’s why it’s doomed amongst youngsters, who don’t want to wait, who believe everything should be instant.

The only thing no longer instant is sex. You can hear anything online when you want, research anything online when you want, connect with all your friends instantly via a plethora of communication techniques, but sex is still something you yearn for. Although the internet has made porn ubiquitous, one can argue we live in a masturbatory fantasy culture.

HC:

Where to begin? I think Bob’s onto something in terms of predicting the future of radio. And I think he has a point about how the Internet can go it alone. However, according to ratings king Nielsen, radio reaches 92 percent of people six and older every week.

Then again…

Look at the stupid East Hills Mall in St. Joseph  video advertisement that went viral on YouTube with over 1.7 million views. So it’s true, anobody can play.

Even Johnny Dare can’t move the needle like that – not locally, let alone nationally – so while radio still reaches lots of folks, it ain’t what it used to be and the chances of it getting much better appear to be slim to none.

As for Lefstez take on sex, he’s hardly breaking any ground here other than to note how prevalent free online porn has become. Which has gotta make it tuff on the folks who make and sell those adult DVDs, pay-per-views and the like. Why buy the cow if you can get the cream for free?

I remember going into the FYI section of the Star one Sunday afternoon a year or so before I left at the end of 2008. Damn few people inhabit the newsrooms at 18th and Grand on weekends – even then before all the layoffs – and walking over to the cubby of another Star reporter and columnist. And was I – and obviously he – ever surprised. Because there on his computer screen the world’s biggest blow job was going down. Naturally, he killed it and I acted like I hadn’t seen it and rambled on about whatever. But even then online porn was fairly rampant. Which believe it or not, I didn’t know.

It wasn’t until the last comic at Stanford’s at The Legends advised the audience to check out Afghanistan porn (and I took him up) that I discovered how ubiquitous computer spank video had become. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘When The Game Stands Tall’—The Streak Of A Winning Machine

onesheetFrom the outset “WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL” looked like this year’s “FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS”

A closer look however reveals that the Sony release is pointed more in a faith-based sports direction.

With its emphasis on character, hard work and love, the film’s storyline was inspired by the true story of legendary high school football coach Bob LaDeouceur‘s remarkable journey of taking the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to their incredible 151 game winning streak.

It was an unheard of accomplishment that shattered all records for ANY American sport. Continue reading

Starbeams: Katy Perry @ Sprint, Byron’s British Replaces Jack Henry, Grandpa Rock?

Hearne: Lefsetz Unmasks Twitter, Laments Passing of Shared Knowledge

dweezil

Like many of you, I’ve got friends who swear by Facebook and Twitter

I’ve also got friends who haven’t a clue. Stomper?. And like me, many of you probably passed through those portals a few years ago – I’ve got something approaching 9,000 Facebook “friends” (I never bothered to convert to “likes”) – but seldom bother to check it.

Which given the odd missed message, is kind of like never checking your mail or email, but somehow we manage, right?

But as entertainment lawyer/scribe Bob Lefsetz point out, are we missing anything?

Because while when I read the Kansas City Star or the Lawrence Journal World I learn a lot, it’s clear that those once mighty news outlets don’t hold anything approaching the sway they did as recently as even five or seven years ago. Let alone 10. Or 20.

Unfortunately they are still run by overseers who act as if they do.

So instead of clawing for the sort of news that really matters, has teeth and breaks them out of the Internet pack, they coast along the same as they did before the bottom dropped out in 2007. Providing minimal news coverage, humdrum opinion columns and tepid entertainment and pop culture information.

In other words, they’re still mailing it in.

Newspapers (and their websites) provide less and charge more. All while offering little evidence that they get it and are following a road map into the future that will resuscitate their tarnished brands.

When what they’re really doing is merely hanging on, making excuses and trying to get by with less and hoping against hope to ride out the free fall of the past seven years.

Now check out Lefsetz’ take: Continue reading

Hearne: Predictable ‘Rush to Judgment’ by Osterheldt, Star

UnknownHere we go again…

When it comes to race, you can count on the usual suspects to lay down the usual judgments.  Take the Kansas City Star‘s hastily conceived editorial condemning Ferguson, Missouri police and citing unconfirmed details of the shooting as fact.

Details that have now been called into serious question and/or proven false.

The editorial: “Lessons of Ferguson: Why a week of rage didn’t have to happen.

“Brown was shot several times, and reportedly from a distance at which he presented no threat to Wilson,” it states. “Some witnesses said he had his hands in the air. Brown and a friend were walking down a street when the officer engaged with them.”

Nothing like building a case for police misconduct on unconfirmed hearsay.

Which went hand-in-hand with condemning Ferguson police for a releasing video of 18 year-old Michael Brown robbing and intimidating a pint-sized convenience store clerk minutes before Brown’s fatal run in with police officer Darren Wilson. Even though the video had been released in response to Freedom of Information requests by the news media.

Then stating as fact that Wilson had been completely unaware of Brown’s role in the robbery, which we now know according to current reporting was incorrect. Continue reading

Donnelly: Sporting KC Entertains Home Crowd, Scores 4 Against Toronto

Jon Kempin

How impressive is Sporting Kansas City‘s current perch atop the MLS standings?

Consider this: in 24 league matches, KC has used the same starting lineup exactly zero times.  Zero.

Not to mention that after losing one of the best keepers in the league the last few years, Jimmy Nielsen, Sporting is currently rolling with its third stringer, Jon Kempin, a fresh faced 21 year old from KC.

On Saturday against Toronto FC– Kempin’s first league start ever – the youngster grew up a bit, coming off his line several times to stop breakaways en route to KC’s beatdown of the Canadians, 4-1.

One of his saves in the early moments of the second half was especially huge, as KC led 2-1 on the strength of two Dom Dwyer spot kicks.

That save kept us in the game,” declared KC boss Peter Vermes afterwards.  “If he doesn’t (make the save), it goes 2-2 and that really changes the momentum of the game. That was a huge save by him and he did very well.” Continue reading

Glazer: So-So Chiefs Disappoint in Loss to Carolina Panthers

nfl-apThe Chiefs continue to be, well, the Chiefs…

Not much to get excited about, huh? If you fell asleep early you might not know that on FOX TV last night our boys went down 28-16 to the Carolina Panthers.

Wounded quarterback Cam Newton had little trouble throwing the ball against our defense. Newton was coming off ankle repair surgery, so he couldn’t run or even throw with his normal ability. In other words, our defense is so bad, knowing Newton couldn’t run at all, they still couldn’t slow him down.

Kansas City’s first string offense, led by quarterback Alex Smith, played the entire first half with no touchdowns and only two long field goals.

Smith looked decent, but not dynamic. He’s just a good quarterback on a below average team – nothing really special. And without Jamaal Charles our offense was next to nothing. The two young backs D Thomas and K Davis did little to impress. Dwayne Bowe was at his best with five catches but no scores.

The Chiefs look like what they are, an average to below average NFL team.

I’ve seen nothing thus far to hint that they might win more than 6 or 7 games. Continue reading

Leftridge: Oh, Hey– The Royals Are in First Place

Royals-CelebrateJust last week I wrote a rambling, stat-filled post about the Kansas City Royals’ chances of making the postseason for the first time since Rutherford B. Hayes was the president of these United States.

At that time, they were still behind the Detroit Tigers for the AL Central lead, and barely edging out three other teams for the second Wild Card spot.

Good LORD a lot can happen in a week. Continue reading

Paul Wilson: Abraham, Martin & John Meet Trayvon, Michael & Jesse

9d130-mike2bbrown2bdisplaying2bgang2baffiliation2bsigns_2bmichael2bbrown2c2bferguson2c2bmo2c2bkilled2bby2bthe2bpolice2c2bpolice2bbrutality2c2bagainst2bthe2bfine2bblack2brace2What we’ve seen this past week in Ferguson, Missouri is becoming an all too frequent event…

With Trayvon Martin fresh in our minds, Michael Brown, an unarmed teen, was shot and killed by Ferguson police.

However, “unarmed” does not always equate to innocence..

After it was clear that everyone’s civil rights were being violated by the Ferguson police – from onlookers to members of the media that were tear gassed and arrested without cause to the dead young man – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon stepped in.

And on Thursday Nixon replaced the local police with the Missouri Highway Patrol.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch took offense stating, “To denigrate the men and women of the county police department is shameful.”  Continue reading

Hearne: New Media Passes, As Old Media Gorges on Ferguson, Lefsetz Says

fbSign of the times?

According to media and entertainment curmudgeon Bob Lefsetz, most online and social media could care less about the mainstream media story of this past week; the riots in Ferguson, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb.

So while everybody from USA Today to CNN to the Wall Street Journal to the Huffington Post to – drumroll please – the Kansas City Star were finger wagging and obsessing about Ferguson, the media that counts for younger Americans all but ignored the story.

A sign of the times?

Sutherland:”There At The New Yorker”- Liberalism Thrives at New Yorker @ Expense of the Truth

51xgXuFzJOL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall” has a great scene where the protagonist is in a movie line listening to a self-important bore go on and on about the theories of the late media critic Marshall McLuhan…

Then Allen’s alter-ego steps off camera and comes back with the real life McLuhan, who proceeds to tell the pedant off for misunderstanding and misrepresenting what his views really are.

I get this same feeling of irritation when some liberal journalist, usually too young to possibly remember the actual events, proceeds to read all sorts of social and political significance into the history of the conservative movement in this country.

Needless to say, the inferences drawn and the conclusions reached are both very negative towards conservatives and serve to rewrite history to rehabilitate liberals’ reputations when awkward facts get in the way.

The other characteristic of much of “progressive” thinking is an insular and clueless elitism that makes Mitt Romney look like Huey Long Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: ‘The Giver’—The Power of Memory in an Alternate Reality

MV5BMTY1MTIxMjg2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjUyNzgwMjE@._V1_SX214_AL_I knew the basic storyline of THE GIVER even though I’d never read Lois Lowry’s best selling utopian sci-fi novel which hit bookshelves in 1994…

Added to which a name cast of Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Swift (all in supporting roles) had me pretty stoked to enter this seemingly ideal, if colorless world of conformity and contentment.

In this FUTURE world the human race knows no war. Violence and conflict are unheard of. And babies are raised with appropriate families and eventually placed into occupations which best fit the controlled environment.

Setting the conformity mood and texture, director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games & Salt) front loaded the film in black and white—almost shades of gray.

Enter high-spirited Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) who lives with his dutiful parental units Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard in their modular home and apparently has been passed by the strict selection process. Continue reading

Jack Goes Confidential: OMG – ‘Expendables’ Destined to Become Deleteables?

Mel-gibson-expendables-3THE EXPENDABLES 3 merges old school with new blood…

Combining aging beefcake with newly recruited fighters in a PG-13 rated mission to take down Mel Gibson who co-founded the Expendables but went rogue—and in a BIG way!

A new era for old Deleteables?

Probably as they come face-to-face with Gibson who has become a ruthless arms trader and just a mean mother******.

Sure, these new additions to the rag tag team are younger, faster and more tech-savvy, but never send a boy to do a man’s job. Especially in this, the most personal battle yet.

Expect lots of zingers interwoven with the film’s non-stop almost Roadrunner like action.

But probably the best of ’em is delivered by a rescued Wesley Snipes as Doctor Death. When asked why he was locked up Snipes answers, “Tax evasion.” Continue reading

Calvin Sense: Ferguson Shooting a Wakeup Call for Urban Youth

Ferguson, Missouri

Ferguson, Missouri

Will America ever get over the racial divide?

This country’s racial divide was not created overnight and will certainly not be swept away overnight. Everyone has perceived views of every racial group that exists in America.  And these perceived views have been evolving in every American largely through the influence of the media, through news, through the learning of history and through interpersonal contact of people of different ethnic groups.

This is natural because that’s how we learn to perceive the environment and people around us.

Unfortunately in America the perceptions of minorities has been slanted throughout history based upon the status of the minority in question in our society.

For instance, the Irish were looked down upon as ignorant drunkards. Italians were viewed as criminals. And Eastern Europeans were considered ignorant and only good for manual labor. Asians were seen as crafty, not to be trusted and excellent at math.

Do I really need to go on about Jewish people, African Americans and Hispanics?

We pretty much all know what those perceptions have been.

However in America today the African American situation is different because to an extent, African Americans can control how they’re perceived and the media presents them. Continue reading

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

I spent several days with Robin Williams years ago near my house in Pacific Heights San Francisco. I also spent several days with Michael Jackson in Kansas City during the Bad Tour in 1987. And I met Elvis at the Hilton in Vegas as a lad.

What do all these people have in common? They were all MISERABLE! Continue reading

Hearne: Lefsetz Calls Out Amazon, Corporate America & You

387

Vivien Jennings & Roger Doeren of Rainy Day Books in Fairway, Kansas

Seems like only yesterday microscopically small Rainy Day Books was fighting the good fight against the corporate bad guys…

You know, Borders, Barnes & Noble.

To do so, Rainy Day owners Vivien Jennings and Roger Doeren brought out the big guns. Heavy hitters like Martha Stewart, Anne Rice, Jimmy Carter and Hilary Clinton.

The idea being to sponsor free-with-the-purchase of an autographed book author events. Events that would  generate tons of publicity and goodwill and at the same time increased sales. The program elevated the Fairway bookstore from mom and pop shop status to tres glam book boutique.

And you know what? It worked. Still is.

However times change. Borders is roadkill and Barnes & Noble gets most book buyers sympathy vote as it hangs on for dear life, fighting for its survival against an almost certain death by Internet.

Meanwhile, back on the Worldwide Web, Jeff Bezo‘s “everything store” Amazon has been making mincemeat out of anybody and everybody and is currently waging a book war with a large publisher and many of the authors Rainy Day’s been schmoozing for two decades.

Now cometh entertainment maverick Bob Lefsetz to set us all straight:

Paul Wilson: Can ‘Mr. Big’ Fix Sprint’s Unfixable Corporate Culture?

sprint-claure-beckhamYesterday was new Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure‘s first day on the job…

I’m sure the 43 year-old executive spent most of his day at the clinic doing his pee test, filling out HR insurance forms, getting his employee handbook, 401K explanation, etc.  Tuesday was most likely his real first day calling the shots and sitting behind the big desk.

So what’s in store for the new guy and what signs should we look for from the Tower of Pure Thought to tell us that Sprint will survive? Or in the words of the late Tom Leathers, that the campus will not be turned into Section 8 housing?

What skills play to Claure’s advantage?  Continue reading

Hearne: The Dark Side of Robin Williams & His KC Connections

Robin Williams and first wife Valerie Velardi

Robin Williams and first wife Valerie Velardi

How many times must we see our so-called heroes unmasked before we learn our lesson?

To separate actors like Robin Williams from the characters they play in movies and on dumbed down appearances on the Tonight Show. To remove them from the pedestals they may or may not deserve and reserve our worship for more worthy subjects who might not happen to be big movie stars or play for the Royals or Chiefs.

Of course, that tends to run counter to human nature.

Take Kansas City Star entertainment and celebrity gossip writer Lisa Gutierrez‘s brief today, “Laughing through our tears: RIP, Robin Williams.”

“Some celebrities touch us so deeply with their work that when they die it hurts like the loss of a family member,” Gutierrez writes. “Robin Williams, who died Monday, was one of those actors…So for now, let us remember how he made us roar. But gosh darn it, it’s so hard to laugh through the tears.”

Journalists like Gutierrez are usually among the first to pounce when someone like Williams, soccer star Hope Solo or O.J. Simpson cross that all too familiar line over to the dark side.

Forget about laughing through those tears. Continue reading
