Tony: How Should We Consider Local Burlesque?
Let it never be said that I won’t give special consideration to local broads showing some skin.
Still, over the past few months that I’ve been writing for this blog I’ve become something of a burlesque expert given that I’ve attended at least 3 local shows. What I’ve seen has intrigued me. Sure, some of the performances are noteworthy but it’s an overall attitude of empowerment that sparks my curiosity. Women who wouldn’t traditionally be expected to take their clothes off in public dominate the Kansas City burlesque scene and their fans are largely female. In fact, for Valentine’s Day the Burlesque Downtown Underground is cooking up a show that I would feel comfortable taking a chick to see...if she paid. Continue reading
Tony: Just A Bit Of Local Criticism of Help Haiti Efforts
Right now I’m searching for something, ANYTHING to watch other than really self-righteous celebrities sound so sad about the suffering of Haiti – Which most of them found out about less than two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the subject of Haiti still dominates the TV news headlines and it’s slowly being discovered that celebrities like Wyclef Jean might not be able to save the world with their poorly run charities.
Even better, there is just a tiny bit of Internet backlash regarding a local Haiti relief effort that’s worth just a tiny mention. It seems that the numbers related to media events in this town might be held up to scrutiny once again.

Tony: Let’s Admire The Good Fortune Of Another KC Hot Chick
Just a quick note for this evening, given that the fortunes of hot local chicks are much more important that the death of journalism, the decline of the Obama Administration or so many floundering local development efforts.
Yes, there is good news to report and it involves local beautiful people. To wit, I’d like to congratulate Laura Marie from KC on her modeling career that’s kicking into high gear.
A look at her professional modeling portfolio will provide ample evidence of her many talents. Better still, her good looks have lead to career advancement.

Tony: Take A Look At The Heartbreaking Aftermath Of A Star Layoff
As much as I’d like to be a bastard, I’ve taken a special interest in the backstory surrounding one of the many people The Star recently laid off.
Julie Rehm was The Star’s letters editor and she’s been with the company since 1995. Now it seems she has been cast aside in yet another stupid decision that takes aim at the Star’s presence in the community and not the mostly useless middle-managers or blathering columnists. Yes, Mike Hendricks we’re all looking at you.
In any event, friends of Julie are disheartened by the choice to let her go and the seemingly endless string of bad decisions that have marked the downward spiral of The Kansas City Star. Worse still, the circumstances of the lady editor’s layoff are lamentable. Take a look: Continue reading
Tony: Top 5 Post MLK Day Observations
So, it’s one day after Martin Luther King Day in Kansas City and I don’t feel any more tolerant.
Despite the ongoing economic downturn, at the last minute this cowtown went out if its way to celebrate the legacy of a Civil Rights Legend. Reports indicate the MLK party in Kansas City, Kansas might have hosted the biggest turnout overall given that it was more of a grassroots affair and didn’t come with any of the political posturing included in most KCMO and Jackson County MLK soirees.
I was lucky enough to get a free seat at the NAACP Olathe Chapter MLK Celebration and I’d like to share just a few of the things I’ve learned along with my thoughts on the festivities.

Sad news to report to start this week, Kansas City reporter Tom Bogdon passed away over the weekend. I recently had a chat his friend and KC Tribune partner Beth Brubaker. “He kept rallying back in these past weeks and … Continue reading

Tony: Kansas City High Art Helps Haiti
Because I’m a horrible person I’m constantly surprised that Kansas City is full of good people willing to help out during a crisis.
In a chance meeting with Mike Savage of The Sav-Art Gallery I learned that he was one of many people taking part in local efforts to help out Haiti. In fact Sav-Art will be doing an art auction with proceeds going to directly to Haitian relief efforts. Folks wanting to boost their appreciation of local art and help a good cause can cruise over to Mike’s main gallery on 4504 State Line Rd for more details. During this weekend the local antique/artsy district will be filled with locals who have the means to save lives from afar.
Savage is quite and interesting guy and talking with him for a sec was a lot more informative than simply reading his bio.

Tony: Considering The Cheeky Ladies Of Cabaret DeLuxe
Once again I’m confronted with the subject of burlesque.
Last time around I think I might have confused a burlesque show with a strip show, so naturally I was a bit disappointed. However, the Cabaret DeLuxe included comedy and a bit of live music so there wasn’t any mistaking this for “classic” stripper fare. And, to be completely forthright, there was no way the broads in this show were going to be strippers in one of the local clubs.
Strangely, with all this in mind I approached the Cabaret Deluxe with a bit of an open mind and was rather curious about what kind of show Susanna Lee – AKA Lucky DeLuxe had put together.

Tony: Kansas City Blizzard Aftermath Freezes Out Local Entertainment Biz
It has been a long, cold winter for locals who depend on nightlife for their income…
Blame Mother Nature, Mayor Funkhouser’s incompetence or just plain, old bad luck but there’s no denying that this most recent cowtown freeze out has left the local bar, club and restaurant scene with a cold chill running up what’s left of their spines.
Word around town is that icy streets and arctic temperatures have provided a one-two punch to the wallet of local venues unlike anything owners and managers have ever seen. Allow me to relay a couple of examples:

Tony: Craig Glazer Breaks Up With “Black Barbie”
Even in Kansas City, increasing fame comes at a cost.
Craig Glazer is currently on a roll. His comedy club Stanford & Sons at the Legends is going strong and an auto-biography based on his life is being turned into a movie. An impresario of the local entertainment scene couldn’t ask for more except for someone to share it with, and that’s where things get sketchy for Glazer.
While fame and money are elusive for any Kansas City area resident, steady relationships are increasingly tougher to maintain. In that context, I’m sad to report that Craig Glazer is no longer dating the gal so many Kansas City media watchers know as “Black Barbie,” a smoking hot local entertainer named Monique Hall.
Here’s a bit of the backstory on their relationship:

Tony: Charles Ferruzza Takes A Fall On Kansas City Ice
It seems that Kansas City refuses to stop complaining about snow and ice packed streets, a lack of decent city plowing coverage and the weather in general.
Apparently, the situation is growing even more dire now that local celebrities are falling victim to treacherous weather conditions.
To wit, my sources say that Kansas City’s premiere food critic Charles Ferruzza took a nasty spill while cleaning off his snowbound car. While this rather brilliant KC writer didn’t miss any work thanks to his tumble, I confirmed with the Kansas City foodie that his misstep had him laid up with a heating pad and over-the-counter strength pain relievers.
So what does this say about Kansas City weather conditions if our greatest writers can’t even find their balance?

Tony: Once Again, We (Sadly) Consider Wedding Bells for Holly Starr
In this Winter of our discontent, it seems that we can’t even count on the hotness of Holly Starr. Or at least the illusion that she’s even halfway attainable.
Yep, Holly Starr is reportedly very happy with her new beau and all signs point to a possible engagement on the horizon according to sources close to Kansas City’s hottest television personality.
Who’s the lucky guy?

Tony: Kansas City Is Extremely Cold And Broke
During the New Year’s celebrations I kept hearing people hope against hope that KC and this town were coming out of The Great Recession.
Unfortunately, during this unprecedented cold spell the only thing that’s clear is that progress and “hope for change” has come to a halt. This isn’t necessarily a tragedy given that a realistic understanding of the current circumstances is the best way to take steps toward improvement in much the same way that drunks must “bottom out” and come away with an amazing story if they survive.
But I digress . . . This post is really about making Kansas City’s current state of affairs plain for all to see.

Tony: A Quick Look Back at KC Mag’s Sexy Singles Questionable Kansas City Hookups
Let’s remember that just a few weeks ago I wished a curable STD on Kansas City’s Sexiest Singles.
The post got a good laugh and to try and prove they have a good sense of humor . . . Editors for the site invited me to take a look at a photo gallery of the them on Facebook. In return for this gesture of kindness I’m going to mock them even further despite the fact that the event raised some loose change for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
And yes, I’m aware that there’s a bit of irony involved in a homebody like myself ripping on the likes of Shanna Hilt (and her shiny forehead featured above) However . . . While these ambitious and charitable beautiful people dominate the real world, the Internet is the only place where d-bags like myself can cut them down to size.
Let’s get started.

Tony: Top Five 2009 Stories About Kansas City People Better, Richer & More Important Than You
D-bags who complain about wanting more local coverage and higher quality in journalism are the same kind of people who would like to imagine that they never fart or eat fast food.
Given the things people say they want in public and what they consume in the privacy of their homes are almost always completely different, I’ve come up with the only accurate list of this year’s most influential stories.
As always, these items don’t have anything to do with journalism or the public interest but are merely this town practicing minor celebrity reporting. Again, if people were serious about demanding quality journalism than TMZ wouldn’t be infinitely more popular and profitable than The Economist.
So, let’s quickly list this year’s most influential and frivolous Kansas City stories that shaped this cowtown’s culture .

Tony: Taking On Gateway City D-bags And The K.C. Confidential Stat Controversy
It’s always a mistake to address anony Internet haters but the topic of K.C. Confidential’s stat success is worth addressing in as much as it points that people working in web media can’t really claim much expertise over the average millennial college student. Here’s the sitch:
To me, this kind of argument that rages among unemployed people fighting on the Internet is akin a discussion of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Still, busting myth-busting people who don’t know what they’re talking about is good fun. So let’s bring just a bit of light into the den of ignorance that is the Gateway City Radio message boards.
