The Dish: College Basketball exhibitions Should be None-and-Done

Here’s my FDA-style warning concerning college basketball exhibition games: treat ‘em like Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Like a new box, the lopsided scores look good. And like a second or third doughnut, a true freshman’s 10 points in 20 minutes seem even better. But, in reality, they have no substance and, if over-indulged in, can cause fans to go sugar-high crazy before they spew all over the message boards.

Kansas State fans, already jacked on the fresh memory of an Elite Eight appearance and huge preseason expectations, watched their Wildcats blah their way to an 83-56 win against Newman. And, trying very hard to appear in midseason complaint form, the boards lit up despite a 27-point win.

It’s meaningless, really, but for those who feel they understand this year’s team after 40 exhibition minutes, let’s break some things down.

Tracy: Ripping Off Johnson Countians to Go Bye-Bye

As your Grandpa undoubtedly told you, never put all your eggs in a single basket…

KCMO currently receives a preposterous 40% of its revenue from the dreaded 1% earnings tax. Including a huge portion from folks who work in KCMO, but plop their heads down at night on downy pillows in JoCo. That’s about to change.

Today, I predict voters will vote YES on Prop A.

So let’s hear it for St. Louis millionaire Rex Sinquefield who funded the petition drive to put Prop A on the ballot.  It will allow VOTERS to decide on future earnings taxes. Not pols kissing up to bureaucrats trying to protect their jobs.

Elected officials love to be heroes on Other People’s Money.

I predict Prop A wins overwhelmingly, especially with Tea Party voters who are mad as hell.

NG: Staying Neutral While Dodging Blahs

This fall neutrals are the must have colors of the season. This color frenzy has been seen all across designer runway shows and has trickled down to our closets. In the past neutrals were mostly considered safe and boring, but with many celebs and designers diving in and reviving the neutral pallets these colors have now gained the “It factor” recognition. How do we wear these colors without falling into the blah section?

NG: Spill the Wine; Banana Republic’s Grand Opening on the Plaza

The opening party for the new Banana Republic location on the Plaza hosted a great crowd. This grand new store is boasted to be one of the best and largest in the country, and rightly so.

There were many familiar faces and some new editions to my list of “Fabulous KC” hob knobbing and enjoying the extravagant ambiance. Pedestals elevated models sporting the signature BR looks. Lots of knit cardigans, blouses, pencil skirts and sparkly adornments (otherwise known as jewelry) were easy on the eyes and with a 30% off discount, also easy on the wallet!

Half a glass of white wine is my limit but I couldn’t help myself when someone asked if I wanted a refill. Thank goodness I left before my third glass or there would have been a problem!

NG: A Night called Fashion by Standard Style Boutique

Where were all the fabulous people on Thursday night in KCMO?

At the Views fashion show, of course! The Views fashion show, hosted by Standard Style Boutique, lived up to all its hype. Amazing weather and a rooftop setting were two of the ingredients for its success.

VIP seating cascading down along both sides of the long runway accommodated the elite and beautiful of this city. Bright light fixtures illuminated the darkened surroundings giving us fashion hounds the ability to seek out and scan all the in-crowd trends (and blunders).

Which I would have to say might have even been better than the show itself.

NG: New town/New fashion

Being from NYC, a pastime for a girl like me is reviewing the trendy threads of women that I see around town…

Trend starters and women that look like they’ve gotten high on Vogue or Nylon magazine quench my never ending fashion appetite. Few are these beauties in the Midwest but  I’ve had the opportunity to see such rarities strutting it on the streets of KCMO. I love that even in the Midwest there are women that LIVE , LOVE FASHION.

These risk takers in my opinion  – since fashion is not on the No. 1 to-do list of the majority of women in this region –  have earned the coveted title of FASHIONISTAS.

Thomas: Moore Backs Out of Debate for Congress on KCPT

To debate or not to debate, that is the question…

Funded by her husband’s Pelosi-powered war chest, Democrat Stephane Moore is running for Congress in Johnson, Wyandotte and Douglas counties on November 2nd.

Moore hopes to replace her mysteriously absent-from-the-scene husband, Kansas congressman Dennis Moore. Channel 19/KCPT and the Kansas City Star have agreed to host and air a televised debate with her opponent, prominent, budget-cutting Republican, Kevin Yoder.

But now Moore is playing games with the rules.

Thomas: Joco Sun to Readers; Pay Up or We’ll Shut Up

To paraphrase Ernest Hemingway, The Sun also sets…

And in the case of the Sun Newspapers, it looks like it’s about to set on a an unspecified number folks living in the wilds of Johnson County, Kansas. Because after 60 years of distributing its weekly newspapers free-of-charge (if you don’t count the panhandling platoons of school kids the Sun used to enlist for door-to–door guilt tripping), some Sun readers are now being asked to pay up or the Sun says it will shut up.

"Dear Sun Reader," begins an August 20th letter from co-publisher Steve Rose, son of Sun founder, Stan Rose. "Due to significant proposed postage increases for newspapers, we regret we must ask you to make a choice. You can continue to receive The Johnson County Sun for $19.95 per year (38 cents per issue) or $24.95 for two years (24 cents per issue)."

Severe consequences await Sun spotters who opt not to ante up.
