Star Search: Slow News Day at 18th & Grand
Let’s keep it real and keep it short….
Got a power lunch to get to with Lauren wants to know and Brian McTavish.
At first blush, today’s KC Star feels kinda like a Monday paper. You know, a little light. Maybe not but that’s what struck me carrying it in, barefoot across my still snowy driveway.
Let’s see, across the top of the front page are the 2010 Winter Olympics, a little grrrl and puppy pic – FYI editors know the readership are suckers for kids and pets and they will play that card – and of course, a Jayhawks win schmooze piece.
Anything here somebody needed to wait a day to learn about or can’t live without? I think not. Continue reading

STARBEAMS: Kiss FM’s Kelly Urich Bats for Ghost of Bill Vaughan
For 31 years a gentleman who went by the name of Bill Vaughan wrote something approaching a column in the local newspaper of record. His so-called aphorisms appeared for years under the heading “Starbeams” until his death in 1977.
One example, courtesy of Wikipedia:
“A real patriot is the fellow who gets a parking ticket and rejoices that the system works.”
Alas, it’s been awhile since any of Vaughan’s successors bothered to beam any beams KC way. Continue reading

Hearne: Raising the Roof – Will Kelly’s New Upper Deck Cure P&L Woes?
When it comes to esteemed local watering holes Kelly’s Westport Inn is in a class by itself…
For starters, how many joints can lay claim to operating in a building 160 years old? Kelly’s can. And for decades the third generation family has ushered it through time appealing to a diverse crowd of youngsters, oldersters, hipsters – you name it – they have it.
That said, the Power & Light District opening two years back took a toll on the bar’s core party demographic, the ever-thirsty, 20-something, training wheels drinkers who like to flee the burbs and party like banshees on weekend nights.
Add to that, the most sour economy in recent memory, Kansas City’s smoking ban, DUI checkpoints galore and a general trailing off of the nightlife action in Westport.
Enter Kelly’s coming soon, new outdoor deck… Continue reading
Johnny Dare to Tiger Woods: Get Real!
The awful truth about Tiger Woods regrets routine Friday…
“We all know what it was,” says Rock 98.9 heavy hitter Johnny Dare. “It was a PR move – nothing more, nothing less. It was a press conference for the press and the only people he owes an apology to is his family. You know, he went out to apologize to people he didn’t need to apologize to. I don’t think the public wanted it anyway – I think that was strictly for the sponsors.”
As for whether the general public will buy in, “I think they’ll forget about it as soon as he gets back out and starts beating people’s asses on the golf course,” Dare says.
Which brings us to the subject of role models… Continue reading
Hearne on the Street: Everybody’s Favorite Gay Columnist?
I get all that jazz about the fine line between love and hate…
Not to mention that other rare quality proudly possessed by so many; love to hate. Comes with the turf. The Star’s Jason Whitlock, for example, has made something approaching a career out of pimping readers. Some love the big lug, less so others. The trick: get the haters to read you. Therein lie the six-figure paychecks.
One of the cherries high atop of the columnist ice cream cone are the folks who like to read between the lines and ferret out hidden motives and truths.
They know, trust me. They own the window into my and every other public figure’s soul. Continue reading
Jardine’s Braces for R-Rated Blues Bulge
When it comes to up close and personal shockers, seldom are they meted out at Jardine’s…
Not that the somewhat laid back Plaza jazz joint doesn’t slam things into overdrive with the likes of Clint Ashlock’s 18 piece big band and hoofer Lonnie McFadden’s R&B croon fest, Or the Lucky DeLuxe burlesque / comedy review.
Still it’s hard to imagine anything approaching that which is about to go down this Friday when Tom “Trash Mouth” Baker clambers Continue reading
Back Patters of the World Unite! The Mike Thompson Global Warming Controversy
There’s a Web influenza going around…
Bloggers relatively new to the news and information game take great delight in the self aggrandizing practice of crediting themselves with getting a story first. On one site, seems like half its content is dedicated to taking credit for whatever the quote/unquote scoop was supposedly attained .
Case in point…
Two years ago, Fox 4 meteorologist Mike Thompson blogged on his station’s Web site that man made global warming was bogus. Internet message boards took notice, as did Tony Botello, as did KCMO 710 AM hit man Chris Stigall and myself in the Kansas City Star.
Let’s see, now who was it that broke that story?
Thompson, that’s who. Continue reading

Slow News Day: The Joe-College Media Gang Bang
Ah, the fine art of journalism…
Or should I say, the lost art?
Lawsuit encumbered Lawrence T-shirt shop Joe-College.com and owner Larry Sinks came under media fire on 610 Sports Nick Wright’s show for a “Frank Martin Mows My Lawn” T-shirt.
The idea being that since Martin is Cuban, the concept of him cutting grass was a racial stereotype.
Hold it right there…
Since when did Cubans become the post dudes for lawn mowing? Continue reading
Joe-College Speaks Out on Frank Martin T-Shirt
As tempests in a teapot go the bashing of Joe-College.com and owner Larry Sinks over a K-State coach T-shirt ranks right up there.
A mini media frenzy erupted today over a Joe-College T shirt that sophomorically read: Frank Martin Mows My Lawn.
The controversy being that Martin is Cuban and the lawn mowing angle was racist.
Huh?
When did grass cutting become a Cuban stereotype.
Now the story behind the story, that other local media didn’t bother to check out. Continue reading
