Hearne on the Street: Dialing the Apples Out of Applefest
Missing in action at the recent Applefest in Weston…
Would you believe, the actual apples?
True story.
This year’s annual Applefest in nearby Weston, Missouri was well attended. Right up there with the town’s jam packed Irish Fest this past weekend. The family fun included art, crafts, music, children’s games, a parade and more.
How about the apples?
“Don’t ask, don’t tell,” quipped one Westoner. “The apple trees that used to line the town have mostly been cut down. There are a few trees here and there, but nothing like it used to be years ago.” Continue reading
Hearne: Kansas vs. Kansas State, Clash of the Cretins
When it comes to getting called out by the homies for being gawd awful, it doesn’t get much better than this…

Hearne: Dear Fellow K-State Grads, Fuck Off, I’ve Gone Jayhawk!
Think catharsis meets brain washing…
Try this bizarre confession on for size from the KU student newspaper’s Web site and see if you buy it: “Proud to be a Converted Jayhawk,” reads the headline. The author, a dude who goes by ksugrad4KU.
“Being a KSU grad, I want to confess that I converted to being a Jayhawk fan a few years ago. I have always admired and looked up to KU as the superior school overall even when I used to be anti KU (I feel bad about that now),” it begins. “If we were to have kids, which we can’t due to health reasons, I would do anything possible to convince them to be Jayhawks.”
So far, so syrupy, right? You ain’t heard nuthin’ yet. Continue reading
Hearne on the Street: Lawrence’s Annual Zombie Walk Brings Out Boo-Birds
From First Friday to Worst Thursday…
The Jayhawks may be down for the count – the football team in tatters and K-State favored to take it all in Big 12 men’s basketball. But none of that mattered to participant’s in last nights annual Zombie Walk in Lawrence.
Not to be confused with our unscheduled zombie walks in and around the Power & Light District.
The four-year old Zombie Walk, a fundraiser for the humane society, drew around 400 undead-appearing locals. About the same number that might be expected to show up for some of the Jayhawk’s late season, cold weather football fiascos if things don’t improve. Continue reading

Hearne: Leavenworth’s Finest Fights Custody Battle, Goes on Prowl
Leavenworth rocker/expatriate Melissa Etheridge is back in the headlines of late…
The girl the Kansas penal colony knows as Missy landed a one-two PR punch recently in both People and the National Enquirer.
Months after splitting with longtime gal pal Tammy Lynn Michaels, Etheridge tells People that she’s ready to roll again…romantically.
“You gotta be fearless about these things,” Etheridge says. “There is no fear when you choose love. The more you choose love, the more love is in your life. It gets easier and easier.”
Not so fast – the more the Continue reading
Star Search: Don’t Kill Messenger Mellinger Just Yet
About KC Star sports scribe Sam Mellinger’s new blog, “Don’t Kill the Mellinger”…

Glazer: The Myth That NASCAR is Good for KC
The much ballyhooed phenomenon known as NASCAR is highly overrated …
Especially as far as Legends/Village West in KCK is concerned. Other then filling up the hotels, to say it doesn’t do much for local biz would be a gross understatment.
In fact I’ll let you in on a secret: It sucks butt for all the restaurants, shops and stores in Legends.
Number one, most Kansas Citians think the area is packed and parking is gone. Not true it’s wide open because there’s nobody out here. KC thinks, “Oh my God, the traffic to get there and back will be off the chain!” Continue reading
Star Search: Sam the Man, Grocery Wars & KC Icon Ignored
Remember these little ditties? Been a while…
It’s not that I’ve given up on reading Kansas City’s newspaper of record, but how many times do I need to take the Kansas City Star to the woodshed to make largely the same points?
That said, I’ve been saving up.
Allow me to make it official; to the extent that I have it in my powers to do so: Continue reading

This just in this morning from Stanford & Sons owner Craig Glazer: “Most of us that were in Westport in the 80’s and early 90’s have Glazer-ish stories of girls, binge drinking, coke, fights, pro-athlete rampages and a helluva-lot of … Continue reading

Hearne: All That Jazz; AMC MainStreet Ups Ante on New Marquee Lounge
Out with the old, in with the smoking hot new…
After scarcely a year of operation, the powers that be in the Power & Light District have re-themed and fine-tuned the elegant space just off the entry of the AMC Mainstreet movie complex at 14th and Main in downtown Kansas City.
“They’ve given it its own identity now,” says spokesman Will Gregory of the redo. “You used to feel like you were part of the lobby of the movie theater, which it was. Now it’s getting its own entrance, its own awning and discounted valet parking. Parking’s been one of the biggest issues down there. Before it was the Marquee Bar & Grill, now it’s the Marquee Lounge.”
There’s more… Continue reading

Hearne: How Ridiculous Was This Year’s Washed Out WaterFire?
There’s a fine line between once bitten, twice shy and try, try again…
And sources say the well-intentioned promoters behind the Kansas City edition of Waterfire on the Plaza have been walking it hard this past week. The New Age spin off of the annual Providence, Rhode Island event took a seriously, fatal bullet last weekend. That after organizers made a last minute decision to go forward with the outdoor burning pylons on Brush Creek in the midst of one of the worst rain, hail and lightning storms of the year. With an October 2nd rain date in the bank, WaterFire blew it by ignoring the obvious weather Continue reading
Hearne: Say What? Local Jazz Club Diva Fumes Over iPhone 4 Woes
Not all Apples are created equal…
Far from it . Certainly not in the case of this summer’s much-anticipated, fourth generation of Apple Computer’s wildly popular iPhone. Practically upon the iPhone 4’s arrival a blizzard of complaints about its instantly-infamous reception and call-dropping tendencies raced across the globe.
“There had been numerous complaints here on Apple Continue reading
