Hearne: Uh, We Made It – Sort Of

Seems like only yesterday I was baiting the unwashed with word of KC Confidential’s bloggy demise…

How Jason Whitlock of me.

Come to think of it, it was a week ago that I foretold of our blog’s going away. I left out the part about the Lazarus Project – our second coming – wherein our 20-month-old media experiment would rise from those same ashes to become the long-promised Web site.

Did I tell you there’d be a few bugs? Perhaps I underplayed that a bit.

First and foremost, a moment of silence please for our former comments section. That free-wheeling snakepit of – to borrow from columnist Art Brisbane – of stunning personalities and typographical errors.

But fear not, they’re coming back…

Hearne: Jack in the Sack Storms KCK With More on the Way

Once upon a time I was a geeky, longhaired college kid in the wilds of Arizona…

Tucson, to be exact.

And never having so much as having darkened the door of a McDonald‘s – Winstead‘s being my burger joint of choice – I ventured into a fast food eatery just off campus at Speedway and University called Jack in the Box.

Or as it was fairly widely referred to by my peers, Jack in the Sack.

From that fateful day forth, the smiling clown head ruled.

Hearne: The Sad, Awful Truth About the Embarrassing 3-D Sunday Star

In one of the most underwhelming major media promotions in recent memory the Kansas City Star unleashed a 3-D edition of the newspaper on Halloween…

How bad was it? Pretty bad.

“I felt sorry for them,” says KC Confidential movie man Jack Poessiger. “I was kind of embarrassed for the whole thing because it was 1950s technology – I mean, ‘House of Wax’ (1953) used those red and blue glasses. And ironically there was an insert ad in the Star that day from Nebraska Furniture Mart selling real 3-D glasses.”

Current day 3-D movies no longer employ the red and cyan colored glasses designed for black and white movies.

The preferred 3-D glasses methodology used by moviemakers today utilizes polarized lenses.

For good reason...

Hearne: Live and Let Die

To blog or not to blog…

From the get-go that was the question pretty much everyone involved with KC Confidential felt they knew the answer to; not to blog.

Greg Hall writes a kick ass column, then I throw up a hail mary or three and next thing you know, "Where’d Greg go?"

Shauna lays down some must-know fashion advice or Jennifer a killer restaurant review and a day later someone stumbles on to KC Confidential and there’s no indication whatsoever of anything resembling food or fashion to be found.

A Web site would clear all that up, right?

Hearne: 48 Hours and KC Confidential Goes Away

You know, it’s been real… Since February 25th 2009 this angst ridden blog has done its darnedest – and at times, its dirtiest – to provide the kind of news, opinion and entertainment that somehow mattered. Naturally, we – I – got ripped pretty good by the good folks who populate that caustic, bitter jungle known as the comments section. No mas. As of Monday.

Hearne: Mother of Man Who Perished in Westport Calls for Accountability

Three weeks ago late Saturday night/early Sunday morning 24-year old Brian Euston was found unconscious in Westport…

He later died from injuries to his head. Kansas City police say a surveillance video of the scene where Euston was either injured or attacked is inconclusive. There were people around and whatever happened seemed to happen pretty fast. But was it an accident or an assault? The autopsy is back, but police have yet to release the results.

Westport property owners and merchants are unhappy with publicity and speculation that Euston may have been mugged. That’s bad for business and property values.

Euston’s friends and family are unhappy with both their tragic loss and the fact that to date no one has come forward from the crowd in the video with information as to what happened.

The investigation is ongoing…

Enter Euston’s mother Kathy Euston, who operates Euston’s hardware store in Prairie Village. Continue reading

Star Search: Hot Off the Presses – a Month After the Fact

Talk about slow news days…

Forget about the hundreds of layoffs at the Kansas City Star the past few years – mine included – Mondays have always been sleepy when it comes to reporting local news. That’s because for all it’s might – and the Star is still plenty mighty – the newspaper continues to suit up but a skeleton staff of lottery losers on weekends. Which renders the Monday edition pretty much a throw away day outside of sports .

Monday’s front page filler, for example, includes a meaningless photo from the Chiefs win, a day old New York Times story and a pair of filler fluff pieces from Continue reading

Hearne: Grave Dancing at The Kansas City Star

May as well make it official…

Kansas City Star sports columnist Sam Mellinger has totally eclipsed heavy duty forebears Joe Posnanski and Jason Whitlock.

Mellinger’s column yesterday about weed wonk Dwayne Bowe was the best of both worlds. A bit of the colorful elocution-like wordplay of JoPo – but more cutting edge contemporary. Along with some of the blustery bombast of Porkchop, sans the unnecessary pimping of the readership.

You know what?

Looks like the Star has (finally) completed the breakup. Continue reading

Hearne: The Curious Case of Brian Euston

The candlelight vigils, Facebook tributes and letters to the editor soldier on…

But still no word on the mysterious death of 24-year old Brian Euston in Westport earlier this month. Which isn’t to say, there is no developing news.

There is.

For starters the autopsy results Kansas City police say they’ve been waiting for are back. Continue reading

Hearne: Maria Juarez Descends, Detonates on KC Confidential

Lest you miss it, I present edgy, new KC Confidential provocateur Maria Juarez real, true Hollywood story/bio.

On Groundhog’s Day of ’91, Maria was expelled from her mother’s uterus in a Des Moines hospital. She is currently the oldest, smartest, and prettiest of two and a-half children. Her formative years were awkward and painful, marked by Mexican jokes and slow chesticular development. Eventually her boobies emerged, and she finally came to terms with her ethnicity. Hearne: Kansas City Police Still on Hold re Westport Death

It’s been four days since Kansas City Police said they were awaiting autopsy results…

That after 24-year old Brian Euston – of Prairie Village’s Euston’s Hardware family – was found unconscious in Westport and later died. Euston had been on the party trail at Kelly’s with friends and had left the bar in the wee hours of Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The $64 million question: How did he die?

An unsubstantiated headline in the online version of the Kansas City Star’s news story led readers to believe Euston had been beaten.

Police called the newspaper out on the bogus headline but the Star declined to explain or change it, police say. Continue reading

Hearne: No News is No News on Baffling Late Night Westport Death

The unfortunate death of 24-year old Brian Euston in Westport last weekend continues to baffle…

The latest: Kansas City Police spokesman Rich Lockhart says police still await autopsy results but don’t expect to get them today. And there’s no evidence – after reviewing video – to support that Euston was either hit by a car or involved in some kind of fight or beating.

None.

The only entity of note pushing the Euston was beaten theory was the Kansas City Star, police say. Continue reading

Hearne: Late Night Westport Death May Have Been Accident

It’s not easy piecing together what may have happened in an accident or crime after the fact…

Right now, police are hard at it attempting to unravel what went wrong where 24-year old Brian Euston is concerned late last Saturday night/early Sunday after a night of partying at Kelly’s in Westport. Euston was found unconscious outside on the ground suffering a severe head injury and later died.

Question is, how did it happen? Continue reading

Think of it as a battle of old versus new, distinguished tradition pitted against cutting edge innovation…

Hearne: Go Ask Alex, Alice Cooper Flashback w/ Art Brisbane Back

Alright, already…

Another calendar year, another visit to the concert bank by ’70s showman Alice Cooper. Along with the attendant local reviews extolling the darkness of his stage antics and the enduring qualities of his music catalogue.

But how about something new to go with Cooper’s old?

Actually, make that something really, really old. Something buried in the sands of time , written about Cooper when he most mattered, by a former colleague of mine at the Pitch, Alexandra Trozzolo. Something from Ye Olde Continue reading
