Hearne on the Street: Westport’s Worst Nightmare; Loma Vista Hardware Closes Sunday
One of Westport’s hippest, most esteemed remaining retailers Loma Vista Hardware is poised to bail...
It’s been 14 years since the old-fashioned hardware, antiques, skateboard and high end fashion boutique ventured into the midtown ‘hood. It replaced the highly-regarded, departing Broadway Hardware Co. Loma Vista retained Broadway’s charm, the musty wood floors, old-fashioned nuts-and-bolts bins, shopworn fixtures and the like.
However that was just the tip of Loma Vista’s business strategy iceberg.
Hardware and antique store owners Chuck and Shirley Dean’s son Todd had other ideas and supplemented the hardware store’s offerings by catering to the burgeoning skateboard culture and introducing cutting edge, nosebleed high-fashion like Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: Stanford’s Masters Mama’s, KC Hopps Walking Tall
With businesses dropping like flies, it’s good to get a little affirmative action…
Hey and the Legends in KCK is onto something resembling a mid-depression tear.
“We’re taking over the outdoor deck and patio that used to belong to Margarita Mama’s before they closed earlier this year,” says Stanford & Sons comedy club main man Craig Glazer. “We’re going to give it that West Coast beach look. You know, with the trendy beach drinks that you might get at a bar in San Diego. And we’ll have live DJs playing light dance and rock music on Friday and Saturday nights. You know, like Jack FM.”
Stanford’s new patio will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. on, Glazer says.
“It’s a pretty eye-catching spot right next to Dave & Buster’s,” Glazer says. “And it has a nice view of the fireworks displays after all the T-Bones games.” Continue reading

This just in: counting crowd’s can be hazardous to one’s reputation…
Nobody knows that better than the Country Club Plaza and Kansas City’s vaunted St. Patrick’s Day Parade, both of whom folded like limp tents when asked to substantiate ridiculously high crowd estimates.
The bottom line: if you don’t even bother to try and actually count the crowd, you’re merely guessing. Continue reading
