Have Art, Will Travel: PBR Mural Dudes Hit Westport Then Run

Ah, the life of a traveling mural painter…

Long days, uncertain elements, groupies. Such is the life for New Yorkers Dan Herrington and Charlie Black who laid down four king size Pabst Blue Ribbon beer artworks in Westport – three on Bill Nigro’s Federal Storage warehouse overlooking the Beaumont Club’s new backyard.

The origin of the art?

“It was a contest that Pabst ran and these are three of the winners,” Black says. “They had about 50 winners overall. We’ve been to Boise, Atlanta, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minneapolis.”

How long it takes to scaffold up the side of a building and lay one down?

“Well, let’s see – probably a day for each one,” Black says. “I have an artwork to paint from and we send photos of the finished art to our sales guys who forward it to Pabst or their creative agency.”

*Degree of difficulty: “It’s hard work, physically hard work” Black says. “And you know it’s a skill – it’s a muscle in your brain that tires people out – we work seven days a week, sunup to sundown until we’re done.”

*Most intense: Continue reading

Burger Week: Will Westport Flea Market Flee Westport?

As mysteries go, this one ranks right up there…

A – for the lack of a better term – spy photo of a cheeseburger on wheels, bearing the distinctive Monopoly board-like Westport Flea Market logo raises any number of questions as to the who, what, where, when and/or why of it.

Does Flea owner Joe Zwillenberg plan to take his “best burger in KC” show on the road? Is the venerable Flea moving to a new location? Did somebody in the art department have one Jagerbomb too many at the Flea’s Rehab Sunday?

Let’s try and sort it out...

With the Country Club Plaza’s somewhat controversial McDonald’s restaurant poised to leave could it be the Flea will be moving on up? Continue reading

Burger Week II: Blanc Burger Bailing on Westport, Plaza Bound?

The word on the street: that wildly successful Blanc Burger + Bottles in Westport may be poised to bid adieu to the midtown party zone…

Nothing official, mind you, but insiders are saying that for any number of imaginable and/or unimaginable reasons, Blanc – which recently added a second location in South Leawood at Mission Farms – is looking into a possible exit strategy from Westport.

*** There was the shooting death in Westport late last year of a 24 year-old Leawood woman.

*** The warm weather, wee hours throngs of urban youth that give pause to white bread partiers.

*** The ongoing exodus of retail businesses that have folded or migrated to hoods like Brookside.

*** Oh and three words that strike fear into the hearts of huddled, befuddled masses; crime, crime & crime

Then there are the rumors of Blanc being less than enamored with its tenant/landlord relationship.

The $64 million question: where might Blanc bolt?

Mancow Slams Gossip Sights for Watering Down Waterboarding

Mancow, Lawyer Call Out KMBZ 980 AM Host Darla Jaye

No more Mr. Nicey Nice…

Kansas City radio export Erich Mancow Muller has taken off the gloves and retained an attorney to get KMBZ 980 AM evening host Darla Jaye’s full and undivided attention.

“I want her to admit that she was lying about Jerry Agar,” Mancow says. “Agar came to me and was really, really hateful to me in the hall and I said, ‘What’s your problem?’ And he said, ‘Well, you took my job.’ I didn’t take his job, they got rid of him because he wasn’t any good. He was a bore and he wasn’t getting through to Chicago.”

Mancow replaced Agar – who left KMBZ’s afternoon drive slot here a couple years back for WLS in Chicago – last October.

Here’s how the Jaye bird fits in to this soap opera… Continue reading

Waterboarded Mancow Weighs in on Torture, Keith Olbermann, Sean Hannity

It’s official: Kansas City export Erich Mancow Muller is back on top…

Two years ago the Chicago-based, syndicated radio shock jock-turned-issue oriented talk show host took a major hit. Dropped by his Windy City home base and off local airwaves there for better than a year found him in a rough patch.

Now erase, erase…

Because last fall Mancow mounted a historic comeback on Chicago superstation WLS and he’s been kicking butt and taking names ever since.

Which brings us to last Friday when a skeptical Mancow submitted to an on-air waterboarding.

Not a mere stunt, mind you – this was the real deal.

“When I was living in Raytown there was a deep part of the river down there and I went in the water and I drowned,” Mancow says. “And some construction workers pulled me out and I had to be revived. So as a man who has drowned, I have a unique perspective.” Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: All-Nude Magic Act to Graze Power & Light District

I’ve stumbled onto some unusual exotic dancer schticks over the years, porn star Julia Parton who claimed to be Dolly Parton’s long lost cousin, Bridget the Midget, to name two…

Scream Queen Rebekah Kochan Disses Playboy Centerfolds, Badmouths Bugs

Comic, actress, scream queen – oh and smoking hot babe – Rebekah Kochan’s resume has it all…

Kochan laid down her comic and scream queen schtick this weekend at Stanford & Sons in the Legends.

“Yeah, I’ve been in a lot of slasher movies,” Kochan says. ‘Like ‘When a Killer Calls,’ ‘Dracula’s Curse,’ and ‘The Telling’ – that’s my most recent one. I’m one of the lead characters and I get killed by a killer doll.”

Kochan’s movie resume comes with a parental advisory: “They’re definitely all rated PG 13 or R,” Kochan says. “They’re definitely not family movies.”

In ‘The Telling,’ for example, Kochan says she worked with a pair of Playboy centerfolds…

“They were kind of snotty,” she says. “I mean, when you’re a Playboy centerfold you can’t be nice to the other girls that are attractive.”

Wildest behind the scenes scene ever to go down in Kochan’s scream/screen career? Continue reading

Soggy Funk Fighters Fight to Finish; Zieman vs. Funk, Feud w/o End

My personal take on the campaign to derail KC Mayor Mark Funkhouser: well-intentioned-but-bogus…

Not that I blame them, mind you.

Who wouldn’t want regime change given the incessantly injurious Continue reading
