Hearne on the Street: Blayney’s of Westport Bites the Dust
One of Kansas City’s premier nightclubs Blayney’s of Westport has closed. The legendary basement blues club quietly closed a couple weeks back. Another victim of the tough times and changing landscape of KC nightlife. It may be gone, but it’s definitely not forgotten.
Owner Dick Schulte declined to comment, but word on the street is he’s looking at other nightclub options.
“I hope he still makes a deal with his landlord and reopens,” says Westport businessman Bill Nigro. “He’s been a Westport institution since before I got here in 1977.”
Thirty-five years, to be exact…
KC Confidential entertainment writer Brian McTavish was stunned to learn of Blayney’s demise. Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: System Failure, the Royals? No Effing Way!
Seems like a million years ago sports pundits were tripping over themselves to finger the Royals woeful ways based on our small market economics...
That more-or-less went away with revenue sharing and the galling fact that other small market teams like Oakland managed to find their way into the playoff picture.
Now ESPN the Magazine is revisiting the subject in a story titled, “System Failure; For Small Market Teams The June Draft Is Broken. Here Are A Few Ways To Fix It.”
Uh, naturally the Royals are batting leadoff in the story… Continue reading
Claire McCaskill Unleashes Taboo Twitter; By Accident, Of Course
Few politicians have benefited more from basking in the shadow of Barack Obama than Claire McCaskill…
Damn few.
And hey and the Baby Boomer Senator from Missouri is keeping up with the new times, too. As in Twitter-ing to her 29,000 Twitter followers from sea to shining sea. And if you’re wondering if it’s really Claire laying down the Tweets – as opposed to some pimply Gen Y page boy – wonder no more.
Take McCaskill’s 11:03 PM Tweet last night… Continue reading
Portrait of Jason Grill: Hunky Mo. State Rep. loses Pics, License, Preps for Becks
And in the case of Mo. State Rep. Jason Grill the heat just keeps on coming. It’s one thing for somebody to swipe the affable, hunky pol’s license plate sticker – that can and does happen to anyone – his framed publicity photo is another matter. Two have gone missing from the Westport Flea Market’s “Wall of Fame.”
“About a year ago I gave them a photo of me, a headshot and it was stolen,” Grill says. “And I was like, ‘Why would somebody steal that – there are so many pictures on that wall – you know, they have Holly Starr. So I gave them another photo and it was up for a couple months and it was stolen on Friday night.”
This time however the culprits were caught on the Flea’s surveillance camera. Continue reading

Hearne on the Street: Ex Zoo Head Takes PR Hit Over 2002 Goose Massacre
What goes around stays around…
That’s certainly the case where former KC Zoo director Mark Wourms is concerned. As evidenced by a story yesterday in the Pasadena Star-News about improving the recreational use of the Rose Bowl loop.
“Brenda Rees at Descanso Gardens sends word that the La Ca ada Flintridge institution just became a ‘potential new home for a winged resident: a rehabilitated wood duck’ ” the Star-News writes.
Said wood duck was tended to by the institution for four months before off he flew, the newspaper reported before taking the following shot at Wourms:
“Maybe it’s just as well the duck didn’t end up at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden during the tenure of Mark Wourms,” the Star-News writes. “Wourms – who now seems likely to be succeeded by former Descanso Gardens executive director Richard Schulhof – had his own way of tending waterfowl. Jones vs Woodside Water Fight Update: Jimmie J.J. Walker, Glazer Weigh In
About that water fight between the Woodside Health & Tennis club’s go-go summer Saturday meet market action and the Power & Light District’s new rooftop pool, The Jones....
One of Woodside’s most loyal party people – Stanford & Son’s Craig Glazer – finally made it downtown to check out the newcomer up close and personal. And the verdict is…”
“The pool is clearly built for one reason,” Glazer says of The Jones. “To meet hotties – hotties or I want to get a great tan in a downtown atmosphere. The impressive thing about The Jones is the area around it is massive. You could easily put 500 to 600 people up there.”
That from the dude who liked Woodside’s smoking singles scene to that of a Playboy Mansion bash… Continue reading

Anatomy of a Car Dealer Murder: The Bud Brown Chrysler Saga
For sixty years Bud Brown Chrysler did the unthinkable…
The Overland Park car dealer sold new and used Chrysler Corporation cars the old fashioned way – straight forward, honest and fair. The company’s reward for its high road approach in an industry where such values and tactics are not exactly considered the norm: a corporate dagger in the back.
“Well, after 60 years I don’t think you take it in stride,” muses owner Phil Brown. “I felt betrayed and I think our customers were betrayed. I don’t think (Chysler) did what’s best for its customers, and our customers tell us the same thing. Because we took good care of them and now they’ve lost their franchise dealer.”
Brown got his first Dear John letter from Chrysler in May, then a throat cutting memorandum June 9th.
“We came into work that day and 90 percent of communication with the factory was cut off,” Brown says. “And we were done.” Continue reading
