Hearne on the Street: The Beaumont Club Backyard
How best to define the Beaumont Club new Backyard in Westport: it’s not the Crossroads…
So say the Yard’s promoters, hey and they should know. But at second blush, there’s a lot to like about the area’s newest outdoor concert and event venue. There also is some rather obvious room for improvement, and organizers vow to make them prior to next spring and summer’s outdoor concert season. Continue reading
Hearne on the Street: Dave Coulier Keeps Count at Mutual Musicians Foundation
Count “Full House” funny guy Dave Coulier among those celebrating Count Basie’s birthday this past weekend…
“He went down to the Mutual Musicians Foundation after his sold out show here and played the harmonica in one their jams,” says Stanford & Sons main man Craig Glazer. “He hung out at Kelly’s in Westport first and you know his other favorite place here was Jardine’s and he was going to go there and try to play. Remember, you and I took him there that one time.” Continue reading
Miller Time: Former KC Mayoral Aid Comes Clean on Salon.com
Former KC mayoral aid Joe Miller’s long-awaited tale of a love affair gone sour is about to be unleashed…
“It’s supposed to come out on Salon.com on Tuesday,” Miller says. “They’re telling me it’s going to run. We’ve been going through a lot of legal stuff, but you never know.”
Translation: there’s still an outside chance that it could be delayed.
What to expect?
“It’s about my experience in the mayor’s office,” Miller says. “It’s over 3,000 words – or at least it was when I turned it in. And all we’ve done since is add stuff to make sure we’re okay legally.”
As to the general content: “I kind of spin it as a cautionary tale of what politics will do to you,” Miller says. “It doesn’t so much corrupt, but it exposes your Continue reading
KCPT TV Dinner Disaster: You Sell It, It Rains Out, You Keep the $$$?
Hard to imagine a non profit screwing over its supporters much worse than KCPT Channel 19 did last year…
In its seventh year the local public television station’s vaunted TV Dinner – the outdoor black tie blowout at Liberty Memorial – took a bullet via a last minute rainout. To make matters worse not only did the station not have a backup plan in place, sources say they decided to try and keep the cash.
What kind of cash?
Serious, as in $150 per person or $300 per couple. Factor in tuxedo purchase or rental, designer dresses and it can hit some decent digits.
Here’s what KCPT told last year’s ticket holders on its Web site post implosion: Continue reading

The Gentrification of Knuckleheads: Would You Believe Portobello Mushroom Soup?
A moment of silence please, for the hole-in-the-wall formerly known as Knuckleheads…
Five or so years back, an unassuming gentleman by the name of Frank Hicks morphed his motorcycle biz in the East Bottoms into Kansas City’s new “oasis of rhythm & blues.” That after the original “oasis,” the Grand Emporium, tanked leaving a void in the city’s live music scene you could drive a hollow log through. Continue reading

Kathy Griffin Holds Court for John Legend at Starlight
Sarah Palin, Hillary, Brtiney and Levi Johnston were all on the receiving end Kathy Griffin’s two-hour plus A, B, C & D hit fest Sunday at Starlight …
As was singer/songwriter John Legend, who capped his weekend here with with front row seats for Griffin.
As is usually the case with Griffin, no star turn was left un-stoned. That said, the D-List Queen seemed to be running a bit short of A-Listers to hammer. There’s only so many ways to slice and dice the likes of Britney Spears, MJ, Joan Rivers, etc. Resulting in Continue reading

Got Blues? Check Out Fish Fry at Hannibals in Waldo
I have seen the future of live blues in Kansas City and it’s Waldo…
It’s no secret the once sleepy, now burgeoning burb is well beyond being well on its way to transmuting into a kinder, gentler, safer-rather-than-sorrier Westport. The heretofore missing link: the absence of a credible live music scene. Enter the trendy new Well (7140 Wornall Road) with it’s still secret stage and Hannibals. Oh and a twenty year-old blues diva named Continue reading

Paul Mesner’s X-Rated Puppets at Grinders, Mark Lowrey & Tech N9ne, Clash at Crossroads
A funny thing happened the other night on my sojourn to Grinders West…
I stumbled on to the-artist-known-as-Stretch’s over the top sendup to Adam & Eve. Or at least that’s what I thought I was looking at. In a nutshell, it’s like a medium-small shadow box thingie with dramatically sexually enhanced renditions of the biblical characters Adam & Eve. The only thing clean cut enough about the artwork to describe is the somewhat subdued serpent.
Honest.
Strech’s take on the stretch: “Paul Mesner did that one – it’s awesome – yeah baby. When he did it originally it used to push against the glass.”
I’ll leave it to your imagination as to what the “it” that used to push against the glass is in reference to.
Btw Mesner heads Paul Mesner Puppets (http://www.paulmesnerpuppets.org/) Continue reading

Dear Pitch: ‘I Have a Dream’ signed, Craig Glazer
In these most desperate of media hard times the players are looking for an edge, a battle plan to set them apart…
In the case of local alternative weekly the Pitch, Stanford & Sons main man Craig Glazer – a Pitch advertiser – has devised such a plan. First some background.
“Well, I’ve noticed here at The Legends and Village West where I am, that lately the Pitch looks like they’re only leaving a handful of papers in their racks,” Glazer says. “It comes out on Wednesday and they pick up the old ones and leave the new ones. I went out the other day and ran into the people who pick them up and leave them – a man and a woman. And I said, ‘Oh are those the old ones?’ and the guy said, ‘No, these are the new ones.’ And they only left out just a handful – I don’t think there were more than 10 or 12 copies. It looked to me like they were only putting out a third or less of what they used to put out.”
Glazer did the math and concluded that readership was down. He wasn’t surprised. Continue reading
