I don’t have to read this article to know Keitzman is a douchebag, but I did anyway. While most of us know George Brett is an asshole, at least he has done something for this town. I’ll never listen to 810 while that employ that weasel (KK). Outside of KC, no one has any idea, or will ever know who this guy is.

You are correct, Denny has been honored by the HOF. And when I hear those old audio clips of him and Fred White played on Royals Radio, I wonder where that guy went. I think he’s cheating today’s young Royals fans who never heard him when he put his heart into his work.

I listened to the last five minutes of KKs interview with Brett on Tuesday, then the first five minutes after Brett hung up, and KK went quickly from sucking up to GB to criticism. This is Klassic Kietzman: deference in the presence of the famous or powerful (as opposed to Regular Joes who call in), but a willingness to rip when that person no longer is available to defend himself. I suspect KK would claim he doesn’t want to be rude to a guest, but there is a difference between that and asking tough questions — a distinction reporters understand. Besides, it can be argued that it is disrespectful to not confront the accused in person with that which one will say behind his back.
As for Denny Matthews, well, what does one expect? Denny’s a swell guy, highly professional and very polished — and bores me to tears. He’d ho-hum the Apocalypse. A few years ago, when the Royals won a season-opener in dramatic fashion with a walk-off homer, DM made a routine call. Asked later about it, he suggested that if he got excited then, what we he do later when it was a really big event? Of course, the Royals have been waiting since 1985 for that Moment. Give me all the flubs and cornpone of Mike Shannon any day; at least he sounds like he’s having fun at the ol’ ballpark.

It looks like you had a blood pressure spike yesterday. KK is KK. He will continue to do the same things over and over until ratings plummet and he is no longer on radio and while he is still on he will give you fodder for this column. Can you say job security!
Denny Matthews has been drug down by all the losing the last 20 years. That would take the excitement out of anybody. I have felt for the last 5 years or so he wants to retire but they keep giving him more days off so why quit.
Take your blood pressure medicine and relax because there will always be more to talk about tomorrow.

I’m sure Lew Perkins would disagree that KK “doesn’t call names.” I’m pretty sure I remember KK calling Perkins a liar multiple times… with only unconfirmed, unnamed “sources” and “trust me” as support for it.

The funniest thing about keitzman’s interview with Brett the other day was Keitzman insisting that Jack Harry is “a legend in this town.” Just because you’ve somehow managed to stay on the air for 30 years doesn’t make you a legend. I’m a lifelong kc resident and no one considers him anything close to a freaking legend.

Hall hates Kietzman because 1) Kietzman, though a talented on-air performer, has proven himself pretty hateable because of his arrogance and insincerity (the kiss a guy’s ass while he’s your guest, then rip him the next hour or next day is something KK has been doing for as long as he’s been on the radio); 2) Hall got fired from the old KCTE after some of his on-air remarks/bits were considered inappropriate (the official explanation) or targeted people untouchables because they were people chad boeger and kietzman didn’t want to offend, such as bill grigsby (the explanation preferred by those in the reality-based community). Hall’s bits were meant to be funny. Were they? Not so much, in my opinion. Were they out of line? No. It was a case of hiring Greg Hall because they liked what he did, and then firing him when they found out they didn’t really like what he did when it was occasionally directed at them and their cronies.

Oh, and about Denny Matthews: Please don’t blame or excuse his less-than-energetic play-by-play on his age or his being beaten down by years of Royals’ losses. Some may be too young to remember, but he was just as dull and uninspiring in the early 80s, when the Royals were still the class of the AL West. As for Denny’s excuse that he has to save the really emotional calls for meaningful games, my most vivid memory of a Matthews call is when the Royals clinched a tie for the West title on the second to last day of the season in 1985. They won in the bottom of the 10th, very dramatic…except for Denny’s call. Someone turning on the radio might have thought from the tone of his voice that it was the 4th inning of a game being played on a Wednesday afternoon in May. The argument for putting him in the hall of fame, as it is for many of the announcers who have gotten there, is “well, he’s not that good, but he’s been doing it for so long.”

Memo to I Wonder: Hall was calling out KK long before Greg went to work at Union Broadcasting. Similarly I was pointing out Star gaffes long before my column there. Come to think of it, I pointed them out even while I was there even – check my columns incinerating the Star’s poorly conceived light rail streetcar plan.

Home Run Burman! It’s hard to find anyone that really likes listening to KK. I think that GH has been pretty fair and accurate in his writing. It’s been a good year so far in KC, Herm and Carl are gone and if we could get rid of KK and Jason Whitlock and replace them with some fresh voices and views that would be a GRAND SLAM.

I think the words for KK are wuss and two faced. He’ll say one thing to your face and another when you aren’t there to confront him. He would do the same with Carl Peterson. Have him on the air and he was the ultimate suck up.
I actually think Greg gives KK to much credit. Why? Greg feels KK is pretty smart and knows what he is doing. But wait, what would of made better radio? KK confronting Brett on the radio or confronting him a day later when he was off the radio? It would of been water cooler talk and made for great radio if KK had been a man and confronted Brett on the radio. Heck Brett might of went bonkers. But instead KK took the chicken and less attention garnering way out.
Jack Harry is a local legend. If for no other reason then what was mentioned about Denny. He has survived a very tough and youth based business. And unlike Len Dawson he didn’t have that sports star credential going for him. He is a survivor. You have to give him that. Plus I know many of you would disagree, but this isn’t a case where times have passed him by and he is just hanging on but is an embarrassment to himself.

Greg…what you failed to mention in your recap of Denny’s game-winning call was the fact Denny got to the commercial break approx. 4.3 seconds after the run was scored. No roar from the crowd, no recap, no description of the fellas running on to the field like a bunch of kids. Nothing. One would have thought it was the end of the 2nd inning.

Excellent point and one that my friend who heard it live also bemoaned. This is probably not Denny’s fault since he’s got a producer and format that they ask him to follow. I would hope though, that a guy who has been calling Royals games since there were Royals games has the authority to break from format once or twice a season when a game-ending walk-off play ignites the stadium and listening audience.
About 10 years back, Nebraska’s football radio network sold their rights to their touchdowns to an advertiser. After every TD, the play-by-play guy would immediately segue into an ad. “Jones sweeps right behind a block from Svenson and dives in from the 3! Touchdown. If you find yourself diving into debt, call our friends at Omaha National Bank!” It lasted about two games.
