KK is just a complete whiny-ass,gutless, clueless, elitist little crybaby that didn’t get his way with a downtown stadium, so he has to bash anything at the K. He and Clinksnail wouldn’t know fun if it hopped in a car and plopped itself in their laps. They should stick to talking golf and stroking each other over their strokes.

I think if you look back I was calling KK Don Fortune before Porkchop said it. I can’t believe Whitlock borrows from me. KK is still mad about losing the Royals rights. You can tell it every time he talks about it. David Glass could walk on water and all KK would say is that has been done before.

My family loves the New K. We went Saturday and had a fantastic time…maybe it’s a good thing I don’t listen to talk radio. I might have been put off from attending…

in a parked car in the parking lot like he got in mission hills when his ex wife found out.
Been to 12 games and yes some improvements need
to be made but overall its a blast.
The county didn’t want to spend a billion on
a new stadium but this one is still one of the
best.
Its outside…lots of booze flowing…the
games between innnings help get thru the
breaks in action and the employees and ushers
at the K are friendly and great people.
KK just needs something to complain about.
Reminds me of the old neighbor on dennis the
menace show that yells to all the kids having
fun “GET OFFMY GRASS”. kk is becoming an old
crabby mean old man and he doesn’t know what
to do about it.
As for maas, its good to see he’s quit his
wife beating,stripper chasing, hard drinking,
illegal drug using, gun toting, bad boy ways.
Maybe he should have cleaned his act up earlier
in life and he would be taking madden’s place
as a broadcaster.
As far as ratings of sports talk stations, as
the royals go…so goes 610. People will listen to the game then turn off the radio. The first
station they hear when they wake up is 610.
Hopefully they will improve their on air product and make some inroads into 810’s audience.

I cannot stand Kietzman, but he was right about the downtown stadium. A lot of problems in this city, especially the tax revenue shortage of P&L, could have been solved by a downtown stadium. Need proof? Go to Denver, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, etc.

KK is right. It’s the new O-K. People who think this is the best ball park in the country haven’t been to any of the other ball parks built in the last ten years.
It’s OK, nothing great. Bush beats it. Petco park beats it. AT&T Park beats it. Citizens Bank Park Beats it. Safeco beats it. Minute Maid Park
Beats it. Miller Park beats it.
KC had a chance to build something great. Something the rest of the country could of said wow too. In stead we built something OK.

of (k is excellent at that)…food…

I’ll take the vibe at Wrigley over any other ballpark any day. Mr.K and KK are on opposite ends of the MAN spectrum. Their names should never be mentioned in the same breath. We do have a nice downtown that is going broke and a nice, but certainly not state of the art as promised arena WITH NO PROSPECTS FOR AN NBA OR NHL TEAM. Kansas City is a drinking town with a sports problem.

The NBA has told us many times that it’s great that we built that thing, but their still not interested in putting a team there.
The NHL was very interested until the CEO of Blackberry wanted to put a team in Hamilton. Now theres talk of a second team in Totonto. Now all of the troubled team in the NHL might try to move to Canada first in stead of KC.
So now resedents of this town will be paying for a arena someway for the rest of their lives so we can have three more concerts a year then what we were getting at Kemper. And the Big 12 basketball Tourny once every three years.
That’s KC for the last 30 years in a nutshell.

I believe your KK bias is being reflected in your written word. You honestly cannot say that the “OK” could not have been done better. The outfield expereience is great but it IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR ANY OF THE NEW STADIUMS BUILT WIHIN THE LAST TEN YEARS. I agree with him that a chain link fence surrounding the stadium is tacky or cheap at best. Would it have been possible to buld something with stone, wrought iron or even that metal surrounding the stadium? What about: the god awful 1970’s exposed concrete, the white awning surrounding the upper deck, the out-dated light posts beyond the outfield stadium seating. Look it’s not as bad as KK makes it out to be but it was a cheap alternative to doing it the right way. Aesthetics play a big part in how a stadium is perceived and quite frankly they didn’t pay attention to the small stuff and it looks cheap. Imagine building a brand new house but leaving in your old appliances or old finishes. Bottomline, is that in 10 years we will be due for another major renovation or new stadium. Remember Kemper Arena?

I’ll agree that the chain-link fence around The K isn’t very appealing, but I don’t think all of the work is done. Otherwise, a fine ballpark experience — and over the last 40 years, I’ve been to most of them.
Overall, I like the retro theme of Busch better, but as far as family amenities Kauffman has it beat (Race the Royals: heck, I even considered that because I know I’m still faster than a couple of those guys; Little K: what a great way to kill a half-hour before game time for we early arrivals than watching little kids on the diamond). The K’s always had great seating, although not as intimate as some. But then there’s beauty in the expanse of a baseball field and there’s an appeal to the spaciousness of this park.
What it comes down to is that KK’s got no soul. Maybe a flashy new stadium downtown would have more upscale digs for the press — The K’s weren’t very good in past years, but I haven’t used credentials this season — but for a nice, comfortable, safe place to take the family, it’s excellent (and about 1/2 the price of Busch).
Royals/Kauffman Stadium was unique among those of the ballpark boom of the ’70s, with a special feel to it one didn’t get at Busch II/Three Rivers/Riverfront/The Vet et al, and it remains singular and pleasurable — removing the product on the field from the equation momentarily — in the Retro 2Ks.
Maybe the difference in my attitude from KKs is that I bought my own ticket and was predisposed to have a good time and he came through the pass gate and wasn’t there for fun — wearing the critic’s cap (‘Now I’ll go review the park and give my listeners the real lowdown from my expert mouth’). Neither view is objective, mind you, except that I’m a born (and professional) analyst who didn’t allow the flaws to hide the broader experience of the specatator.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare a renovated stadium to a built-from-the-ground up new park. That said, I still think we have a beautiful venue to watch and enjoy the MLB experience. I too wish it was downtown but it is not. That is no reason to whine about it for the next 25 years. But the contrasting opinions here are fun to read. I enjoy the Comments section as much as the columns.

Almost forgot… Re: WHB’s abysmal commercial-to-content ratio…
Greg, this topic should be a post unto itself. Seriously, how does 810 get away with 20+ minutes of commercials every hour?
They start each hour 5 minutes in (literally 5 minutes before they stop w/ the ads, ESPN updates, more ads, more ads, etc.). Then they end each hour 5 minutes early for another ad smorgasbord. There is 10 minutes of commercials right there — for EVERY PROGRAMMING HOUR — and we haven’t even gotten to the commercials/ads they incorporate into each show and the traditional 2-minute ad breaks they run several times each hour.
Seriously, WHB has to be making a TON of money… and no one says a word about it. Keitz, seriously guy, quit selling me BBQ crap and mortgages and exercise equipment and etc., etc. and instead how about you focus on producing some quality CONTENT.

Greg, the K isn’t the best renovated stadium. It’s par with Angles Stadium which is an older ball park.
Lets face it, the O-K is another KC should of went all out for. In stead it went all half assed.

It’s not whining, Greg. It’s holding those accountable for the 250,000,000 plus that the Jackson County tax payers handed them. I could care less, where the stadium is located(a brand new one in the same spot would have been ok with me). And to be honest, I enjoyed the old K game experience just as much. Face it, it was a half-a$$ effort by a bunch of corrupt Jackson County Sports commission officials and a Mayor that sold the county on a lie that the teams would move. I expect better from and for our wonderful city. They got A LOT right with the renovations but they also left A LOT to be desired.

610 gets the first interview with Bill Maas. Another slam in the war. I thought Maas was great and I agree with JOJO that if he had stayed on course he would of been considered a replacement for Madden. Billy Bob’s comment on the media not knowing who the locker room leaders were rang true. How many of us have worked a job and management thought one guy was top notch but the line workers felt a totally different person was? In all honestly if Maas was on the radio now he would be better then at least half of what we currently have.
