Hearne: Kevin Kietzman Says, Mahomes Will Be Hated By Sports Fans

One man’s treasure is another’s trash…

Hang with me here for a few minutes to explain.

“I don’t think we will ever see anything this amazing again,” says exiled WHB sports talker Kevin Kietzman, referring to this year’s Kansas City Chiefs team. “I mean, the Chiefs were down double digits in all three playoff games and they won each of them by double digits. I don’t think that will ever happen again. And I don’t remember it happening before.

“All I know is they were down in every game and that kid (Mahomes) just took over like magic. I wanna be his coach. How did he ever lose all those games at Texas Tech?”

There’s more…

“Patrick was 5-0 this year in games he was down by double digits,” Kietzman says. “To put that in perspective, Kurt Warner was 2-44 when trailing by double digits and he’s in the hall of fame. It’s insane. Mahomes is changing everything – we’re literally looking at the best quarterback who’s ever played. He doesn’t have five rings yet, but he will.

“He’s going to be hated every sports fan in America. He’s right up there with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Everybody else is just very good, but there’s a gold standard in every sport and we’re looking at it. And that was one of his worst games yesterday. He’s only played in like 35 games and yesterday was in the bottom third of those games.”

This is why Mahomes needs to be true to himself and try not to fall completely into the trap that is “fame”. Maybe sign a contract that’s not going to make him look totally greedy plus limit his public exposure. The old entertainment mantra applies here: “always leave them wanting more”.
Having said that I could use a few hundred thou, thanks in advance Pat!

    • admin says:

And maybe not be so greedy that the Chiefs would be unable to sign and retain other key players on the team

      • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Oh, come on. Mahomes is GOING to be the highest paid QB in the league. Probably the highest paid PLAYER in the league. That’s just a reality. Good for him. He earned it. He did something that no Chiefs QB was able to do for 50 years. 50! It’s up to him and his agent to decide on how that contract gets structured and how “team friendly” he is willing to make it. That’s going to be the key. But, asking him to leave money on the table for the “good” of the team is ludicrous. It’s the responsibility of the Chiefs office to manage the cap, not Mahomes’. Would you take LESS money at your job than your employer was WILLING to pay you? Of course not.

At this point, Mahomes has a talent that nobody on the PLANET has. Capitalizing on that talent doesn’t make him greedy. It makes him fortunate.

If (big if!) Mahomes plays at this level and stays healthy for the next 10 or 12 years, he could own every QB record in the history of the NFL. That’s 100+ years of records and a first ballot, unanimous Hall of Fame induction.

        How much is that worth?

          I dunno, but…time will indeed tell…
And after the scare this past season – and thinking about what happened to Alex Smith – health is vital.

  2. Kerouac says:

    “It’s insane.”

    – agreed… but everyone is welcome to their opinion

“we’re literally looking at the best quarterback who’s ever played.”

    – ah, the thrill of debunking errant opinions – everyone is welcome to their own – KK’s track record football prognostication however, found wanting to say the least. On the other hand, may just be colorblind: mistaking #15 green and gold Bart Starr for KC’s catsup red and mustard yellow #15. To wit, even in his present state repose hallowed ground, visiting Starr’s final resting place football Valhalla – Kerouac recommends it.

“He doesn’t have five rings yet, but he will.”

    – just like Starr! – and Bart won his 5 in a 6 year period – unmatched NFL history. He even wears Bart’s jersey numeral in tribute, but unlike the NFL’s best ever who played in the legit era yesteryear, today’s QB’s cubic zirconia, as all the modern day players.

That ‘the great overhype’ couldn’t even beat out the KC journeyman Alex Smith, quite the indictment (Smith had an better post season QB rating than Mahomes too – twice even – but did not have as good an supporting cast of teammates around him, assisted by the lesser quality/watered down competition has become the NFL last three years.)

Reality… stats don’t lie, even the modern ones some which have been compromised in favor offense/QBs. Coming off a poor 78.4 rating Superbowl 54*, KC’s ‘great overhype’ also finished buried 7th in QB ratings NFL in 2019 behind his betters – including MVP Lamar Jackson who is the best young QB in the game along with Deshaun Watson. As well, veterans Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees remain superior (even a decrepit Brady is no less than on equal footing.)

In fact, already entering his fourth season 2020, Mahomes has not even won a single passing title – compare and contrast with yesteryear betters Otto Graham (who won 3 passing titles in his first 4 years) and Johnny Unitas (won two his first four) – course, both the latter QB’s also played the legit era, contrast today’s ‘put ’em in a dress’ one.

      I dunno, K…

I think you have to let go of the past if you want to live in the present and be open to the future.

Like maybe Ed Strangler Lewis could have kicked the Rock’s ass. Or maybe not.

Maybe Mickey Mantle was a better hitter than…you name it…but he probably didn’t face the same calibre of pitching.

And maybe Len Dawson was good in his peer group but might have fared poorly with the size and speed of some of the defensive stars of today.

Frankly, there’s really no way for an armchair quarterback to scientifically, anecdotally make an indisputable case on such topics.

Meanwhile, life is passing you by and you’re missing out on some very enjoyable sporting events, while tsk-tsking the players and games today.

Do you long for the joys of listening to the scratchy broadcasts on your boyhood crystal radio? The beauty and joys of black and white television as opposed to color – let alone then image quality of high definition televisions today?

Do you disdain the microwave ovens, high quality washers and dryer and dish washers of today. Prefer washing your clothes in a stream against rocks and hanging the clothes outside to dry?

Do you prefer dueling as a means of settling disputes over debating? Mineral water over penicillin?

Where do you draw the lines?

      • Kerouac says:

No way to make it brief HC, so grab a sandwich, an ice cold soda and tell Michael Bloomberg to ‘bite’ you, then precede to read…

“I think you have to let go of the past if you want to live in the present and be open to the future.”

        – Kerouac does not embrace present, exist in it shy finding a way ‘back’, head ‘happily ensconced’ yesterday, to each their own.

“Ed Strangler Lewis…Rock’s ass….Mickey Mantle… probably didn’t face the same calibre of pitching… Len Dawson…”

        – “probably” is the go to when nothing beyond subjective opine presents… how many people choose believe it, validates it not.
What remains/be left with before the comprised era was born, stats as comparison, evidence in lieu opinion/mob mentality.
        _________

        II

Ruth was a better hr hitter than Bonds – sans PEDS – provable via stat. Dawson retired 1975, the best passer ‘history’ the NFL, fell to second aft Jurgensen retired. Then, rules/stats measure manipulated/ changed, and suddenly ‘every QB’ was an Hall of Famer. Thus did stats become bogus, and continuing to date.

‘Today’s players are better’ fallacy remains as ever, subjective…
the bigger, stronger, faster is better, must translate victory. Old enough attend, analyze and converse sports sufficient measure since ’59, do not buy it.

Has always been bigger, stronger, faster – never changes. If such were panacea/were that simple, would guarantee victory as well records – all them – would have fallen entirety/not stand the test of time. ‘Greater’ 🙄 players today should’ve obliterated them – that they’ve not majorly nor entirely, indictment.
        _______

        III

Size, strength, speed: the 3 S’s do not gain magically advantage over time due its passage. 1960’s, Ernie Ladd 6’9 350… still no one today matches his size NFL. Bob Hayes remains the fastest player ever same – World’s Fastest Human in ’64, not just NFL. Bob Young at 35/still playing the NFL, competed the inaugural ‘World’s Strongest Man’ contest 1977 and finished second… in the world.

Records? MLB, Williams .406/ DiMaggio’s 56 game streak still unbroken to date. NFL, 7 td pass game Luckman has stood since it was set 1943 – never exceeded. Sayers 6 tds game unmatched – 55 years. NBA, Chamberlain still holds records unmatched and unbroken aplenty 60 plus years since his debut.

The 3 S’s are as unique from each, as skill is from desire. More 3 S types today? So what. More of everything today – more teams, more players, more games, more everything… despite more, still no better, and as proven evidence above, not even as good many cases, in all the modern day’s bogus glory.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 – ‘the race is not to the swift, not the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all’. Upshot: were it not so, rosters, stats, betting lines and overhype tossed afield would dispense actual competition.

“Frankly, there’s really no way for an armchair quarterback to scientifically, anecdotally make an indisputable case on such topics.”

        – frankly HC, Kerouac clearly just did… severally

        – yes… makes me feel compassion for those unenlightened

“Do you long for the joys of listening to the scratchy broadcasts on your boyhood crystal radio? The beauty and joys of black and white television as opposed to color – let alone then image quality of high definition televisions today?”

        – in fact, do… film noir preferred as b&w to color (turn down the latter to get the same effect) – again say, to each their own…

“Do you disdain the microwave ovens, high quality washers and dryer and dish washers of today. Prefer washing your clothes in a stream against rocks and hanging the clothes outside to dry?”

        – severally… also dress/groom 60’s style, own vehicles same, prefer music as books similarly; if you knew me, would be no need to ask…

There, one more literary masterpiece fini…

That’s pretty much how I think about pop music/culture. 1966-67 has yet to be surpassed.

            That’s kinda-sorta more fair Rick…

Account ting for taste, of course.

It’s a bit more of a stretch to make the case that athletes today are inferior

        • Kerouac says:

More grist for the mill: ‘winners’ the first 3 Superbowl’s ‘were not’ the ‘bigger, stronger, faster’ teams a KC, OAK and BALT – rather, the ‘smaller, slower, weaker’ Packers x2 and Jets, go figure (better, continue to read Kerouac.)

David’s slew the Goliath’s, fresh-faced experts take note.
Possible today no less a degree than yester: 3 S’s century 21 no more immune from being out-played, out-hustled and out-coached.
          ______

If February is here, baseball season must be near… not yet content at the altar $atisfaction, coming MLB 2021: more manipulation of the game – according scuttlebutt, the NL will adopt the DH then… and why not.

More offense/cowbell, less pitching/strategy. Sure, let’s skew stats and screw record book integrity yet one more time/way – kick the game’s once legit history in the nuts yet again – throw more past time tradition on the barbie!

Tom Hanks ‘Jimmy Dugan’ Major League was wrong… there is crying in ba$eball.

LOL. That was a tweet put out by an ESPN talking head last night. Double K is something else.

      Easy Big Bill…

He said it was something he heard…do you honestly think that the only information that’s worthwhile is that which is originated by whomever?

If that is your measure, why listen to talk radio at all?

  4. Shawnster says:

Patrick Mahomes already is the best QB in football and likely one of the best to ever play the game. We are fortunate to have him in KC for what will surely be a glorious career. There’s no sense in comparing him to the past, because frankly there is no one to compare him to. This is unprecedented and instead discounting him for this or that, I for one am going to enjoy every moment of his career. Right now, I would argue he is the best Chiefs player ever and he’s only 24. He is now the face of ALL sports. He is now on the level of Lebron and Tiger and on course to surpass Jordan when all is said and done.
    Just enjoy the ride.

  5. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Let’s be honest, it’s a hell of alot easier to be a qb in today’s NFL. The NFL has clearly tilted the rules in favor of the offense completely. You can barely touch a quarterback today without getting a penalty. Have today’s qbs play in the 1970’s and take the hits guys like Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw were taking. With worse equipment, worse medical care, etc. Having a linebacker lower his head and ram the crown of his helmet into the quarterback’s chin to knock him unconscious was a regular occurence. And legal.

  6. Kerouac says:

    CAPTION THAT PIC #1

    – verity requires no addendum…

    CAPTION THAT PIC #2

    – over the hill and through, the Woods…
