We haven’t seen Adam Sandler quite like this since PUNCH DRUNK LOVE….
And that was back in 2002!
His latest big screen outing is a hard-hitting crime thriller called “UNCUT GEMS” directed and written by Josh and Bennie Safdie. The film’s location is New York City’s diamond district in Manhattan where we find Sandler totally transformed into a brash jewelry store owner.
He is also a compulsive gambler. con-man, lousy husband and general low life who is constantly looking for the next big score.
Think of it as ‘Punch Drunk HUSTLE’!
And then he comes across a deal to be TOO good for his OWN good: A rare uncut hunk of a diamond that COULD change his life forever. But you guessed it, all hell breaks out instead with Sandler now barely surviving the collectors and enforcers who don’t take kindly to his latest scheme.
All this in a frantic and exhausting setting. Bad guys yelling on top of each other which should give many moviegoers a headache.
It sure gave ME one……..
Having said all that, I have to admit that I was very much impressed by Sandler’s award-worthy performance and wouldn’t be surprised to see his name pop up when the Oscar nominations are announced on January 13th!
So see it at your own risk.
