Glad you wrote about this GH. I caught some of this on the way home…ever since Tim Fitzgerald, mouthpiece at gopowercat.com, announced on that website that Gary Patterson was offcially the next head football coach at KSU after Prince got fired, I’m skeptical anything I hear ‘out of Manhattan’, either from that website or from KK. More often wrong than right…
My belief is that Currie will find a way to get Martin and company what they want. Martin stayed at KSU when nobody, even some KSU fans, wanted him..and then turned them into a top 25 team. Time to reward that loyalty. Glad Currie is trying to clean up the athletic department after what Krause, Prince, et al did, but this is not the time to be cheap. I think he’s asstue enough to know that and will get it done.
One sidebar, the media and opposing fans love to point out Delonte Hill, KSU asst coach and key east coast recruiter makes about $400K a year, yet the ‘coach in waiting’ at Texas Will Muschamp gets $900K a year and nobody bats an eye. And nobody bats an eye when Bill Self hires Mario Chalmers Dad to carry water or whatever BS title he has with KU…double standard?

To say Martin was loyal and KSU should be grateful for it is kind of disingenuous imo. KSU offered him a job when practically nobody thought he deserved it — that’s why Martin might consider being loyal to KSU.
Ponying up some cash might keep Martin at KSU for another year or two … but if he keeps putting teams like his current one on the court there’s no way he’ll remain in Manhattan long-term. Just no way.

Here it comes…the smell of fear in the air wafting from Lawrence. Nobody in Manhattan questioned the Martin hire. That came from Larry. They attack who you hire, then when he recruits and wins, they hit the, “He won’t stay THERE!” button. They did it with Bill Snyder and they’re doing it now with Martin. I don’t know if KK’s claims are true or not, but I DO know that he does have connections to insiders at the University, and they wouldn’t use him as a communication tool unless they felt it was necessary. He is a tool alright. A communication tool.
As for Martin, many things changed with that game Monday night. If Martin continues the win string into the UK2 game on the 30th, Currie’s hand will be forced.

Herb is right, I heard this on the air and it was the $100k raise that insulted Martin per his sources. He is currently making $750k and wanted to get to at least $1M annually. KK is claiming that the $100k raise to $850k is the problem.

Also, comparing K-State and Texas is stupid. Texas football brought in $87 million in revenue. K-State’s entire athletic department brings in around $48 million, which is low compared to KU which brought in revenue around $82 million this past year.

As a KU grad/fan, I truly hope Martin IS as good as he appears to be AND that K-State hires him to a long term deal.
Hell, Mike Anderson appears to be a legit big-time coach, and I hope he stays.
It’d be GREAT for Kansas to have both its rivals as good as possible.

I’m with Cliffy. Back when K-State hired Martin, I thought K-State had sold its soul to keep Beasley and Walker in the fold. I still think that, but I have to admit that Martin is a much better coach than I ever thought he’d be. But I think if you asked most K-State fans (as well as Wefald and Krause) and they answered honestly, they would admit that they’re surprised by how good Martin has turned out to be for K-State. Don’t get me wrong; I misjudged Martin and he’s turned out to be really good, I just think he exceeded the expectations of pretty much everyone. There was nothing, and I mean NOTHING, in Martin’s prior history that would indicate he would be able to do what he’s done. I say more power to him. He’s got those kids playing hard in-your-jock defense and I am impressed.
I do have one question for K-Staters. I had no idea his parents were Cuban immigrants until I saw that on the game Monday night. That may be the only thing I learned from Brent Musburger. Anyway,”Martin” is a pretty “anglo” name. Does anyone know if his family changed thier name from, say, Martinez? It doesn’t mean anything either way, I’m just curious.
As for keeping him, if Kietzman is right (an iffy proposition at best, I know) then Currie is an idiot. You need to go to Bob Vanier and get him to write a check and now. because this is his opportunity to hit the lottery and if K-State’s athletics department thinks he isn’t worth it or that they don’t have to pay him, they’ll be looking for a new AD and for a new hoops coach and he won’t be any good. Maybe you can get Danny Nee to come back to the league, but that’s about it.
And as a KU fan I’m not sure what to think. I kinda like having KU be K-State’s daddy and I think Martin is a threat to that kind of domination. At the same time, it’s a lot more thrilling to play against his teams than those of Jim Wooldridge and Tom Asbury. This might be the chance to finally correct the error K-State made when they ran off Dana Altman for those two knuckleheads.

Reasons you dont insult a cuban:
1. On WC3 you always meet the little ghetto wannabe prick who swears he a badass and likes to say nigger to people. When you call a cuban a nigger they usaully kick your ass where I’m from.
2. Usually after you tell somebody your cuabn after they tried using nigger to offend you they start calling you a cuban pussy. These guys are probaly from some redneck state that has somebody saying there “pure cuban” when their actually 50 or 25% cuabn and don’t even know how to speak Spanish giving the real cubans a bad name. rick, you might be right… except that this is the 3rd time in the past few days where GH has, IMO, taken a comment out of context and presented it in a manner to make it flesh with the intended narrative of his post AND to paint someone in a bad light. Both are HUGE failings on his part.
And don’t get me wrong, I’ve been reading GH for a while now (back when he was posting to The Landmark (Platte County newspaper) and back when he was still w/ The Star) and I certainly don’t relish in calling him out on it, but all 3 instances are/were quite egregious. And even in this instance, his first response was to suggest that *we* were reading it incorrectly… and then I showed him the issue in my post above, he comes back to say it was simply “typo”.
And even that I can forgive, but then I remember who the typo reflected badly against (KK) and the fact that just a few days ago GH took another KK comment obviously out of context (it was a comment about the BCS) and then when you lump in the known dislike that GH has for KK… well, the story quickly starts to paint itself.
If GH wants to be like Tony and throw up posts that simply exist to disparage people/things he doesn’t like, then that is his prerogative. But he doesn’t get to be clean in doing it.
