New Jack City: KC Midterm Political Ads Make For Mega Media Payday

It’s the biggest windfall his sales department and out-of-state station owners that can ever remember…

This from sales executive who’s been in the area for decades.

Whoever says politics aren’t good for the economy doesn’t know what they’re talking about!

You say you’re fed up with the massive onslaught of political commercials?

Wel,l the bad news—or make that good news if you’re a media type—is that the various campaigns still have a war chest in reserve. And they’re planning to unleash them in the form of last minute media buys during these final two weeks prior to election day, November 6th.

And why is Kansas City so blessed with massive political TV campaigns when markets like Wichita, Topeka, Columbia—even St. Louis proportionally are not?

The culprit is our state line. And with highly visible and important races playing out in both Kansas and Missouri the media blitzkrieg is centered here.

Why, you ask?

Simple.

If you’re trying to reach Kansas voters living in the metroplex you’ve got to pay to reach their Missouri counterparts as well.

Same holds true for the Missouri races. The campaigns have to buy the entire Kansas City market just to reach their side of the state line.

In other words an $800 spot in the 10:00 p.m. news is only reaching $400 worth of your potential voters.

Sure you can direct target with mailers and cable buys, but let’s not kid each other.

It’s tv and radio that get the plumb political buys. And you can ONLY buy these mediums on a Greater Kansas City basis.

So the good news is that the assault on our senses is getting close to being over. Just hang in there for a couple more weeks.

And yes our unnamed tv sales hotshot has already made budget many times over.

Nothing enrages and disgusts me more than the half truths, and outright lies peddled by campaigns on both sides of the aisle. When Josh Hawley’s campaign lampoons McCaskill about something she did or said, I research it and find out whether it’s true or not. It’s normally about 30% true and taken out of context. Same for McCaskill bullshit on Hawley. It’s just so damned dishonest, it makes me despise both candidates. And then you have to gag your way thru the Kansas elections as well. Luckily as a Missouri resident, I can ignore those. But Jesus, it’s just brutal to try and watch any tv these days.

    • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Guy, these political ads are targeted to people that don’t give a hot-damn about finding out the truth, researching anything and just accepting everything “their” party’s candidate is putting forth. It’s not that hard to wade through the bullshit and get to the “truth”, but the vast majority of voters are uneducated and ignorant on the actual issues. Red or Blue, baby! That’s the deal. We’ve ended up with a government comprised of political hacks on both sides of the aisle that don’t give a shit about anyone that doesn’t favor their ideology. Just satisfy enough of your base and these rubes will keep sending them back cycle after cycle. The absolute political kiss of death is to actually agree with your opponent on ANY issue. You get elected in today’s political climate by claiming only YOU have the answers and your opponent is the Anti-Christ who wants to destroy America and eat your first born.
