What constitutes a good color guy on a basketball broadcast? Figure that out and then come to me with your fire Bob Knight cries. Boring guys with lots of info like Sundvold don’t stick. Bald-headed lunatics with a penchant for diaper dandies don’t make anybody happy. Knight is different. It’s not like the job requires a pHD — it’s color commentation.
Chuck D
ESPN did the same standard def/HD swithch for the Mizzou vs Texas game last week. It appears the worldwide leader actually listened.
JimmyD
ESPN was showing games in standard def before Fescoe started his petition. Why has it taken so long though? This has been going on FOREVER
Johnny Utah
A better comparison to Sherron Collins is Mateen Cleaves. A great college player and leader, won a national title, some character issues, drafted mid-first NBA 2000, wasn’t big or quick enough to stick around the league.
Cleaves just had his number retired by MSU. Collins gets KU to Indy in April, and he’ll get the same at KU.
Stevo
Ptolemy-Color commentary requires a little COLOR! Knight is black and white. As far as X goes, if KU falls short of expectations there’s a chance he stays. If they meet expectations, you’d think he’d shine enough to go. Hopefully he can keep his level up and win a ring cementing Sherron as the #2 Jayhawk of all time.
Buchan-O-Clastic
Digger Phelps must have woke up from his hybernation in the last couple weeks because he was ANTI-KU when the Jayhawks played in the “Rhombus of Ridonkulous” back on January 30th. He basically leveled KU to all hype and gave them little credit while he picked K State to win on College Game Day with his purple tie on. Funny how that works…
ESPN has been screwing the Big 12 in hoops coverage by not breaking away since the Big 8 days. I can remember a MU v. KU match that was not broken awy to so coverage on a peanut shcuking contest between Syracuse and Pitt could be finished out – and MU and KU were both top 10 that year I am sure. Does the Big 12 have to throw more money at ESPN or someone else to get any respect?
Chuck D
hey Stevo, when you say #2 jayhawk of all time is that in terms of bastard children that he’s fathered? He couldn’t keep it in his pants in the elevator and can’t do it now. Wrap it up man! I wonder who is paying for all those medical bills, diapers, formula etc. kU boosters to the rescue…
Greg Kelser
Sherron Collins is far superior to Mateen Cleaves. Cleaves was an awful shooter; he was a good leader and distributor, but he had no business being taken in the 1st round. Collins may turn out to be a bust in the NBA, but he’s got more going for him than Cleaves.
jojo
still waiting for $1000 cash. Even with
x…ku comes up short this year…maybe
losing in elite 8. They look good but as
long as they are just playing bad big 12
schools there’s no way they survive
in the tournament.
Thy need to play some good teams..oklahoma
is not good…texas is not good (now)…
mu is okay..but ku doesnt play good teams
enough to withstand the tournament. And
they play bad on the road. Even on nuetral
courts they will have problems.
And k state may be good against mediocre
big 12 schools but they won’t make it to
elite 8 or final four.
Its just not in the cards. These teams are not
big time teams yet. The big 12 will fade this
year…there might be a suprise but theres
one team moving up fast…I’ll bring them
up on Wednesday…the real team to beat in
march/april.
jojo
btw…collins in one tough competitor. The only way ku wins it all will be if collins wins it
for them. the rest of the team is window dressing
compared to collins.
Theres no better guy I’d wish to win it all than
self. Great guy. But theres too much pressue on
this team to win it all…just will need a lot
of luck and some lucky shots falling.

Self’s record in league championships does put him in the same category with Wooden. The Big 12 of the last decade is much more competitive than the Pac 8 was in the 60s and 70s. No one is ever going to touch Wooden’s ncca championship records…but when he won all his titles, only ONE team from each conference made the tournament. If that were still the case, there would be no such thing as the Big 12, or the zillion-team Big East. Teams are allowed fewer scholarships now, and players don’t stay four years any more, so it’s harder for teams to stock up and dominate as the Alcindor and Walton teams.
Cliffy
Coach Z’s comments are nothing more than hyperbole to stir discussion. Self is an excellent coach, no doubt. However, he will never be placed in Wooden’s class because history will concentrate on how he did as an NBA coach — which is where he is headed in the near future.
Monkeyhawk
Self is firmly established in a top-tier sports franchise. I’m not sure he’s gonna be attracted to Charlotte or Sacramento or those other towns where Greyhound doesn’t go.
I’m a Bobby Knight agnostic mostly. But he noted what happens to a high school kid when Bill Self visits the kid’s living room. It’s probably not all that different than when Coach K or Roy Williams comes calling. But at that moment a kid knows he’s gonna get a scholarship somewhere and have a chance to excel. Self would never have that clout in the NBA.
I get the feeling Self really enjoys coaching 18-, 19-, 20-year-old kids as they pursue their dreams.
I think that’s what nudges him into Wooden territory. I remember when the NCAA banned the slam dunk, simply due to Lew Alcindor. I love how Wooden, to this day, talks about those teams and refers to Kareem as “Lewis.”
Stevo
Chuck D- What would you have him do? Quit playing ball because he has kids? As much as you want to hate him, SC is going to play ball for a long time professionally. It might not be in the NBA but at worst he’ll play overseas and make way more money in a year or two than you will in your entire pathetic life. And you know the best part??? I don’t think he’s married is he? I’m sure the mother of his kids gets the same aid that every other unprepared poor woman gets when she has kids. Oh and they buy the diapers too. Thanks for your support Chuck D…I’m sure Sherron appreciates it!
JAM
He’s gotten better — appears he doesn’t drink anymore — could that be the reason?
jojo
sherron will be #1 nba..no doubt about it..
the guy is in it to win..
if i were to bet on ku..it wouldbe solely
on this guy taking and willing the team
to the title.
The rest of the guy’s are pure pussy compared
to sherron. No guts…that’s why when they
play a really good team who wears sherron
down and plays the right defense…ku bows
out. sorry…its sherron or no ncaa title.
Uncle Dick
If KU wins the NCAA Championship, they may start calling Aldrich Kareem of Wheat.
___
GH: Heck, why wait? Kareem of Wheat is too good a nickname to put on the shelf and wait for a title.
Javaman
If we all just agree that Bill Self is the greatest coach ever, and that KU is the best program and deserves a 2 week bye in the NCAA tournament, will they all just shut the hell up and go away?
bschloz
Wizard of Westwood…most definitely a different era. HBO did a documentary on UCLA hoops that I would highly recommend to any fan*****. I think you can watch it On Demand
“The rest of the guy
mike
javaman- no
Dexter Morgan
You KU haters are higher than a Georgia pine. Kansas is going to MOW THROUGH the NCAA’s like a Samurai sword through jojo’s skull. This team hasn’t even come close to peaking or firing on all cylinders yet.
jojo
dexter…wheres the money brother?
ShawnF
What about the fifth star? According to Brent and Bob, there’s a new player for KU: Brad Morningstar. Must be Brady’s evil twin.
Eric
And then there’s Mike Anderson, once again having his team overachieve their talent level and finishing way higher in the conference than all the pundits predicted. The man does not get enough credit. All he gets from people is a bunch of “yeah, but….”
jojo
ERIC…anderson deserves better and he will
get it. When he leaves mu. This is just a
stepping stone to a big time program.
Its gonna happen. The guy has worked miracles
with what he’s had and he’ll soon leave for
a program that appreciates him. Those empty
seats at the arena are an embarssment for the
guy. He’d look good at michigan or indiana..
hey how about at somewhere in kentucky or
louisville?
I;m still waiting for mu’s one big huge
upset every year…it could be march 6.
Eric
Jojo,
You missed the point of my post. The point was he doesn’t get enough credit amongst the media who just want to slobber all over Bill Self. If there is one thing I’m NOT worried about, it’s Anderson leaving Missouri anytime soon. And I wholly expect teams to come after him. Especially Arkansas, as soon as this year.
Eagle670
Bill Self has got to be the greatest coach ever, I mean you take a bunch of low life McDonalds all-americans and a roster full of Pro prospects and get them to win is just incredible. Give me a break!! It is a shame that Frank Martin and Mike Anderson are not recognized for their coaching abilities.
Dexter Morgan
Mike Anderson can coach but the man cannot recruit. Who has he brought to Missouri that he can hang his hat on? His nephew? Part of being a great college coach is being able to get top players to come play for you and so far Mike has been mediocre at best.
jojo, I don’t need to wager to prove anything. If you don’t think KU will win it all, put your money somewhere else big fella.
Eric
Dexter,
Clueless much? Mike Anderson took over a disaster of a program that was on probation. If I remember right, he couldn’t even recruit off campus. Mike Anderson at that point had nothing to sell recruits. Now he does, and he’s pulled in a 5 star in Tony Mitchell, and a top rated 4 star point gaurd in Phil Pressey? Can’t recruit? Your head is up your ass. Also keep in mind that his style of basketball also eliminates alot of players that aren’t willing to work and run as hard.
Jayhawk Fan
Part of being a great coach is recruiting and part of that is staying at a great school with a great history. Caoch Self turned down more money to stay at the best BBall school ion the country. To be the best you have to have the full package.
Bill Self was not handed anything, he earned his way. Coach Self recruits with honesty, he can tell kids he is staying……etc etc etc … and he coaches a great game.
All you jrBig12ers are just jealous of what KU has. You want to blah blah this and blah blah that and say/wish he is going to the pros and wish bad things for us but the facts are thefacts ….. 6 STRAIGHT BIG 12 TITLES …… THAT IS A FACT!!!
remember your “aint played nobodyBS words….what a moron you are, you could bnot spot talent if it …… ah anyway … HAHAHAHAHA ….
THE MIGHTY KANSAS JAYHAWKS MENS BASKETBALL TEAM are the best in the Big 12, for 6 years running. Who knows if we will win it all, but we look pretty good, and it sure is fun to watch, and fun is the important thing…
Get on the band wagon and quit whining. You mu goofs picked the wrong school ( I am still abiding to my deal to not insult KSU for the rest of this season: )
Bill Self is not only the coach of the year, he is the coach of the decade and maybe the coach of the century.
KU RULES THE BIG 12 !!!!
6 YEARS IN A ROW
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK .. GO KU !!!!
Jayhawk Fan
PS
I will add that KU is the best in the BIG12, while the BIG12 happens to own 20% of the spots in the TOP25.
This is going to get even better. MARCH MADNESS is around the corner. KU will make the sweet 16 and that is all I ever hope for, after that there are too many factors whcih comes into play ( dang I despise those raised /elevated basketball courts, only when a kid in injured flying off will they cut that crap ), but I see the Jayhawks as favored 1-1 to win it all this year.
We only need 9 more NCAA titles to own most ever, and that is possible. KU IS LOCKED AND LOADED FOR YEARS TO COME.
