Hearne: Craig Glazer is Dead

Brace yourselves, here it comes…

“Craig passed away last night,” says longtime friend and former Chiefs star Ted McKnight. “He had a heart attack and passed. I don’t think his heart could handle everything that was going on.”

“Everything” ranged from years of having type 2 diabetes while continuing to drink, smoke and not eat right. Followed by leukemia, gall bladder issues and his kidneys shutting down.

It wasn’t pretty, but the guy who grabbed life by the balls and wrested every ounce of sex, drugs and rock n roll he could from it has moved on.

“He lived large,” says faithful friend Bill Nigro.

“You know, people say a lot of things about Craig, but I know for a fact that when I needed him he was there,” McKnight adds. “And you know what? I’m heartsick but I know for a fact he’s in a better place. He’s with Junior again.”

    Godspeed CG.

And so, my rejoinder your approval of me: I always liked you too, CG… so long friend.

  3. Goose13 says:

He brought a side of life to KC that was needed and is still needed. He loved this town. They don’t make people like that often. RIP.

    • Nicely said, Goose13.
I got to know him when he owned Stanford and Sons in Westport 20 to 25 years ago.
Westport was never the same after he left; I don’t know how long ago he left Westport and had a place at the Legends and then off Metcalf.
He knew a lot of celebrities. I remember when Joe Montana went there in Westport, so you know Craig Glazer was pretty freaking cool to bring in the
greatest QB ever as a guest to his establishment.
Pretty much the hard-core truth about Glazer in your story.
Personally, I was not fond of your headline. But I’ll get over it.
      RIP Glazer

      • admin says:

Yeah, it wasn’t;’t the most artful headline, but the way the news hit me was with blunt force…and that’s pretty much the way I passed it on.

  4. Paul... Just Paul says:

I didn’t know Craig, other than his posts here and his reputation with Sanfords, but over the years I felt like I knew him. I agreed with some of what he wrote, disagreed with a lot more, but read every word.

    Thanks, Craig. Rest in peace.

  5. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Well, shit. From all appearances, CG didn’t get cheated out of anything. Quite the life. Not a real believer in any of the after-life stuff, but he’ll be a heck of an addition if one were to exist. Sure enjoyed his musings.

  6. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Well, he certainly lived (and died) on his own terms. May he rest in peace.

  7. admin says:

Am I the only one who noticed that Harley disappeared at the exact same time Craig did?

Remember, Craig got busted early on for loading up the comments section with phony characters.

    Is it possible?

    What would Paul Wilson think?

    • Super Dave says:

I have said that more than once as well as saying you also knew who it was.

    • Kerouac says:

My preference would not be to address this here, this particular thread, but…

Kerouac’s ‘Spidey-sense’ tingled just enough some 2-3 years ago that I asked CG directly on this blog ‘are you Harley?’ (and/or by extension ‘Boom Boom’/ however many other multiple ‘Sybil’s, as the case might be/have been)… ‘CG’ replied, “no.” Call me a cynic, not sure I bought his answer 100% (references to HC needing clean up CG’s, Boom Boom’s & other’s posters work, also gave me pause.)

Too, the fact certain ‘poster’ usernames are highlighted (some cases due their having officially ‘written’ for KCC no doubt), yet other highlighted usernames sometimes link to real or bogus random websites, of note.) [As an aside, have noticed of late ‘Not secure’ appears before KCC’s web address; I do not recall that being the case previously.]

Further (not referring to holding up a post for purposes a content check, i.e. Boom Boom’s for example), when certain username posts appear before any others, yet later posts show up which in fact have an even earlier timestamp, well, one wonders (but hey, who doesn’t love hi-jinks, huh.)

Fwiw, a post made 13 days ago, the evening of August 3, is the last I found by ‘Boom Boom’. Shy CG being successful at that which Houdini promised upon his death, guess we’ll never know (unless HC chooses to come clean ?)

  8. Brandon Leftridge says:

Very sorry to hear this. His time may have been short, but he packed a lot of life into his years. He will be missed.

  9. Snappietom says:

I think we all know that P Wilson inflated his comments by commenting on everything
that was commented on his article.

    • paulwilsonkc says:

Inflated my comments? First, I wasn’t aware there was a “total comments” award, nor are comments a measure of anything. If you’re at all interested in my motives, I felt if you cared enough and invested the time to comment, I owed you a personal response.
There were a few people on here who opposed everything I said, but I ended up forming a connection and friendship with them.
Stomper, who rarely agreed with many of my positions, but I greatly admire him personally. And, we’ve met for lunch on more than one occasion.
      Chuck? We’ve shared a cigar or two….
I responded, when I wrote here, because I respected the commenters and enjoyed the interaction. That’s the long and short of it.

      • Stomper says:

Paul, thanks for the mention and sorry that we are exchanging thoughts among the comments related to this sad topic. I think I speak for a large number of readers here who always enjoyed your epistles on KCC and miss your participation. Having offered a few pieces of my own here, I agree with you that having the ability to respond to comments can further the discussion as well as enjoyment in the repartee.

  10. mike t. says:

I woulda liked to have known him. Sorry to hear of his passing. RIP CG!

  11. Eric Haynes says:

Craig Glazer was a force to be reckoned with in KC for a long time. I doubt another one like him will come this way. RIP Craig.

  12. Phaedrus says:

RIP Craig. I never met him, but it seemed that he was either loved or hated. I’m not surprised that his friends say he’d do anything for them. The world needs more people like that.

Maybe the Chiefs will win “the big one” for the Glazer this year.

  13. Bob says:

Why was he at Research? Did he not have insurance?

  14. ekim says:

To all of his friends, sorry about your loss. Love him or hate him, the world will be a little less interesting without him.

  15. chuck says:

So…, in a way, in that 21st century, interweb way, where we all communicate on line, we are friends here. We have vitriolic arguments over politics, ethics, morals and current events, local and national. But, we come back, we look again to see who said what and why, then move on, or, comment from out own perspective. It’s an angry family, but, it’s family of a sorts and in this disjointed, disconnected and pressure filled life, the respite and opportunity for catharsis and a place to voice your concerns on our, all of our concerns, is an anonymous (If you want it to be.) safe haven, where PC fears are secondary to honestly held beliefs expressed.

This close and constant association over the last five years for me (Many of you, much longer.), has been rewarding. Fuming at this and that, insulting and demeaning those who disagreed with me, or supporting those who in turn, supported my beliefs and opinions, was, and is, quite simply, fun.

I met Glaze only 3 or 4 times in person, he was a charming, congenial, upbeat and gracious guy. A charismatic louche with, probably a pretty good right cross. I liked him a lot. His comments here, always extemporaneous and forthright, were honest and heartfelt.

The room, will not, in any way, be the same without him.

God bless him, may his passage be joyful and his remaining family take solace in God’s grace in this time of heartache.

  16. David Nelson says:

Very sorry to hear this – was really hoping for a CG comeback. Football season just won’t be the same without his picks/teases. Thank you Hearne for keeping us all informed.

    • admin says:

      I’ve been trying, David…

You’re very welcome. His final curtain call last night threw many of us for a loop though. And I’d forgotten he had a pacemaker.

  17. David Baxter says:

I spent many years every day with Craig. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly. The amount of stories and experiences we shared I will cherish forever. Love you big guy, and give junior some love from me too.

  18. J Springer says:

Don’t glorify drug addicts who kill themselves.

  19. The Word says:

Craig should be known as the King of Westport.

He loved that area and always wanted it to be the premier entertainment district in Kansas City. But seeing the area he loved going deeper and deeper in despair thanks to political correctness, changing demographics of the customers and more/better options in the burbs effected him and the area he loved.

No joke here, but I personally think the city should name a small part of a city block in Westport after Glazer. I know that won’t happen. But it should.

    • admin says:

No argument, but let the record show that Craig’s Club 512 or whatever dance club started as a straight disco but rapidly morphed into THE black dance club in KC, complete with e crowds outside on weekend nights. Many Westporters hold him to blame for helping perpetuate that

  20. If there’s an afterlife, I hope to see CG there someday. It would be a pleasure just to watch him operate.

  21. Duke says:

Back in 2004 I was sitting at the Tiki bar outside of the House of Blues in New Orleans. I was an uninvited “guest” at some company function and just wandered in the alley-way. After 20 minutes the barkeep and part-time stand-up comedian asked where I was from, then he said KC? Do you know Craig Glazer and Stanford’s? Sure, I said. Great people, he said. My free drinks got stronger after that. Oh for sure, he was a KC icon.

  22. Orphan of the Road says:

Only requiem I have read that rang true so I copied and pasted it after removing the real name.

RIP Craig Glazer, owner of Improv and the Standup Comedy business Stanford’s in KC –
    7) Craig was brash and dubbed himself as “The King of Comedy” and anyone that knew him has a story or two.
😎 My favorite tale – when X was 18 or 19, he signed up for Wednesday “Open Mike Night” as “Neil Whisper”.
“Neil Whisper” was a bizarre Andy Kauffman type character with a lisp, overtly bashful, and an IQ of about 57.
    9) Patrick never broke character from Neil for his first night at Stanford’s, while the entire staff really thought Patrick was “Neil”.
His bit was part stupid, part hilarious, and part genius.
    10) As word grew about Neil, more folks started attending those Wednesday nights to see what Neil had to say and do.
    11) X never broke character from Neil for several weeks, until one night Craig figured out that “Neil Whisper” was not a real person.
    12) He was steamed and yelled, “No one dupes Craig Glazer!”
He wanted X gone that night, but the staff calmed him down and told him how many fans Neil had garnered.
    12) Neil continued to perform for a few more weeks, until he left for Chicago.
    13) It is said that Craig’s last words this week were, “I. Hate. Neil. Whisper
