Take 5: KCTV 5 Hires Michael Coleman Despite KK’s Protests / More Changes In Store For Channel 5 Viewers

In 2003 KCTV 5 made the unprecedented decision to drop their sports department and outsource their sports reporting to Metro Sports of Time Warner. KCTV 5 then ended their relationship with Metro Sports a few years ago and currently offers no dedicated sports segment in their local newscasts. All that is about to change come mid-April.

I met Blaise about 8 years ago at an event in Texas. He’s a great guy. He’s off to a great start at KCTV.

Keitzman is a hack blow-hard living in the past. The major sports teams in this town suck. KK has to deal with that and make a comment about everything from an underdog’s perspective. This has fucked up his psyche. And thank God Frank Boal is history now for sure.

Nothing against Frank Boal, he seems like a nice guy, but I’ve never heard him say anything worth repeating. I remember hearing KK’s rant and thinking that if I were Boal, I would be uncomfortable. Bottom line … if KK doeesn’t like the move then it probably is going to turn out to be good.

One more thing. Since when because a guy runs and climbs mountains, that makes him qualified to anchor sports.

In general I think we should celebrate that 5 is bringing back sports. I would say i see him talking out of both sides of his mouth. In one sentence he says sports was removed because of evil consultants. In another sentence he says that weather interruptions have been reduced because of………focus groups which is pretty much the same as those evil consultants. That being said I also am glad that Katie was neutered.

As far as Boal not getting the job. I think their is more to the story if you read between the lines. The word may have been “It wasn’t a good fit” but it sounded like others didn’t want to work with him. Or maybe they felt they would have to many white faces on the show with Frank. Sometimes if you have a choice between a young mustang or an old solid work horse you go with the young mustang.

Can KK really be mad that someone else didn’t hire Boal when 810 axed his radio show?

I don’t think consultants and focus groups are the same thing. Getting information from a focus group is actually getting information from real people. Congrats to Channel 5 for listening to those people and toning down their weather coverage.

Is “Duke” really Duke Frye? That would explain a LOT here.

And consultants are androids? Yes………..i understand your point.

Both have in common not trusting your gut and needing outside sources to tell you what to do. Gee KCTV 5 the thousands of phone calls from enraged viewers wasn’t enough to convince you to scale back on katie coverage.

Good article. It’s surprising (and refreshing) that the news director was so forthcoming.

Frank Boal is impossible to listen to. Everytime he comes on the air on 810 I flip the station. He tries to act like he’s 30, constantly interrupts people, and is flat-out annoying

It’s the curse of the banded collar shirts that’s keeping Frank off the air and maybe some infidelity karma too. Frank Boal is just a Don Fortune clone with a jock pedigree. He and KK are cut from the exact same cheese cloth. That KK thinks he’s some sort of kingmaker in KC sports media is just another illustration of how delusional he is.

I think it’s refreshing 5 is going in a different direction than hiring mumble mouth Boal. Never understood how he lasted so long in any market. As for being in the same room as Jack Harry and Al Wallace. Don’t ever insult Jack like that again. Al Wallace is like a college TV broadcaster. Maybe worse.

If it’s bad for Keitzman, it must be good for the rest of us.

It will be great to have a new voice in sports. We have heard the same ones for the last 30 years. Good Luck to Michael Coleman and Channel 5!

good move..hope that it works out for 5.
Channel 9 just keeps those old horses working
and it just keeps working…but 5 has
new blood and it will be interesting to see
    where it leads…..

Boal is among the group that will not get hired in today’s business world. He’s a man, 10 years from retirement, and white. It doesn’t make any difference that he has been successful in the past.

Prepare for more KU suckfests on KCTV 5 with a Lowrents KS native doing the sports. Reason # 459237 why I don’t watch local tv.

Typical overreaction by Keitzman. He wouldn’t have enough sense to shut his mouth even if he was on his knees in a room full of dicks.

Boal is a lame-brain dufus. Can’t finish a complete sentence, has nothing to say. Kietzman is a blowhard. if boal is so great, why did WHB cut his hours?

Greg, my objection is to your statement that Katie Horner was “neutered”. That is sexist. I can’t stand her, and am glad they ordered her to stop interrupting programming. But “neutered” is a violent statement. It smacks of woman-hating. You can do better, your usual classy better, Greg.

And I agree that Frank Boal is annoying. Vocal quality was too amped up on caffeine– a tight high pitched rant is what he generally delivered. His day, his style are outdated, and the new ND made the right call.

Now note: I said Boal’s days are over. Not that he was “neutered” by KK, WHB or Ch5. So boys, do you get it now???? Put down the knife and pick up your remotes.

Greg didn’t like the movie Howard the Duck so what does he know?

    ___

GH: You must be a long-time OTC reader or my date for that ill-fated mess of a movie. HTD remains the worst movie I have ever plunked down cash to see. Anybody else got a worst-ever flick they care to name?

Two in fact the only two movies I’ve ever walked out of. By the way i also liked Howard The Duck. Bridges of Madison County which should of been called Horny gal tries to get strange piece while husband is at the fair with her son. Seeing Clint Eastwood without a shirt has caused me nightmares.

The Shadow. It was soooooooo boring that I left it to go see City Slickers 2 in another theater.

Worse date movie was something with Goldie Hawn and her being a politician in Washington. We both fell asleep during it. Breakfast Club wasn’t much better. the things I did for that chick. Ended up marrying a referee. Figures.

I welcome the new guy, at least give him a chance. This town doesn’t need more recycled media people.

KC is in for a treat! Chiefs will have a winning season this year and it will be due to the inspiration coming from Michael Coleman.
