Seems like only yesterday Harpo’s had a small line to get into the bar cause it was Tuesday and 25 cent beer night… That same night an even larger group lined up outside Charlie Hooper’s in Brookside for dollar bottle beer. They had Hump Day Wednesdays, Ladies Nights all over town, girls get in free deals. On weekends at some clubs you had better know someone or you’d be in line forever at Atlantis in Westport. “Where’s Stuart, he’s my cousin, let us in. I’ll pay double the door cover.” No more. No lines, no lists, no busy clubs to speak of… Question is, why? Sure the economy is a huge factor, but it may not be the biggest reason. With a national population of 300 million and growing, the goverment really wants you to stay home when you’re not at work or school. Its called control over the masses. With you at home, there are fewer law enforcement problems and Big Brother knows where to find your ass. Cops write tickets now if you so much as blink wrong. this is so bizarre i am not sure if it was written as a joke.
you’re complaining that technology has given consumers more options including easier access to news, information, and more affordable entertainment? classic.
even better was the suggestion that costlier penalties for traffic violations is a government plot to keep people at home. at the risk of sounding cliched, craig, i think it is time you put on the aluminum foil hat and hide in your basement.

Let me share this.
Based on some crack research by my assistant; she points out that the number of adults between the ages of 21 and 30 is 34% less in the metro today then when we were bouncin’ around Westport, The Plaza or The Quay, (circa ’75 to ’85), back in the day. Factor in some urban sprawl and people don’t have to come in to town to “party”
I still miss the Merry Go Round in Shawnee. What a great place when 18 was the legal age in Kansas. Then Pogo’s Daddy Joe’s….

I found this to be interesting and some points are valid some aren’t. Don’t have a lot of time. But just a few quick points.
*If the police need to write tickets to help support…..having more police to write tickets, job security, and the running of the city…….wouldn’t you think they would want more people on the street so they could write more tickets not less. So if you stay home you are cutting off there source of existence. The law of supply and demand.
*TV is destroying everything. This argument/myth has been going on since the day the first TV was sold. Do you know movies studio use to not advertise on TV because that was the competition that was trying to put them out of business. But actual facts do not support this. Though you have to make some adjustment for inflation more people go to the movies today then ever did. Thats with cable, DVD, On Demand, etc. Why? Because you can’t recreate the movie experience at home. Plus its a social experience. Movies are a place to see and be seen. That doesn’t happen in your basement with your mom upstairs.
Craig your thoughts are interesting but very much open to debate.

When it comes down to it, I think the biggest culprit has been the proliferation of “entertainment districts”. Westport and the Plaza were the only two games in town for a long time; now you’ve got P&L, Legends, 119th Street, Waldo, Zona Rosa, etc. We’re spread pretty thin these days.
My 10 seconds of crack research said KC’s metro population has gone from 1.44 million in 1980 to 1.95 million in 2010, so I doubt the overall metro 21-30 demographic has shrunk in that time. I do think your comment about sprawl is right on–that population tends to live much farther out now.

Hey I did the married with kids thing for the last 25years so I can’t really relate to the club scene of the 90’s etc….I think I snuck into Dirty Sally’s one time when I was 19…way out of my league. Didn’t all those places decline with Magic Johnson and aids? Saw a great Doc. on Plato’s Retreat…anybody here ever go there?

The Merry Go Round I’m talking about was on Shawnee Mission Parkway. The club had an 18 and a 21 side. They were the first nightclub, (I think), in the metro area to promote drink and drown nights.

I think you are right. I came from Leavenworth so i would get State Ave and Shawnee Mission parkway confused. And generally speaking one side was country music and the other rock/disco. Should of known Smartman would have the answer.

Bottom line. I don’t know Craig. Craig is not my buddy. But I feel relative confident in saying this. He’s like all of us. He is a flawed human being. He’s done some outstanding things in his life. And he’s done some things he regrets or wishes he could redo. He’s a little self centered and self absorbed. But again that is not an unusual trait for someone his age who is not married and has no children. I believe deep down he cares for people and wants to do the right thing. Yet like all of us he sometimes fails. What does the Word say about throwing the first stone? The issue wasn’t the woman WASN’T guilty. The issue is we ALL our guilty. Those without sin throw the first stone. No one did.
Now all that being said……..I’m a better person then Tony 🙂
