This is like the Chiefs beating the Steelers. Broken clocks are right twice a day. Until Nick or 610 can beat KK and 810 7 out of 12 months this is a non-issue that I would certainly lay low on. If the future numbers trend down Nick is gonna have so much spooge on his face his nose will look small. Just cause you nail a hot chick who has her vodka goggles on doesn’t make you her boyfriend.

Good job Nick! Get KK and the boys all pissed off. They may be douchebags but they’ve got a .50 Caliber sniper rifle to your Super Soaker.

Arrogance can be entertaining when it’s part of an act or a character and thus not to be taken too seriously (see pro wrestlers), but when it seems to be genuine, I think it can be quite the turn off for many in an audience. And that’s what I take away from the entirety of Wright’s comments — a sheer and annoying pomposity the likes of which I would typically associate with Kevin Kietzman himself (although I don’t recall ever hearing even Kietzman refer to himself in the third person). Perhaps that’s why I don’t really care for either one of those 2 dudes. For my money, the Border Patrol and Petro are the best this market has to offer. BP entertains me. Petro educates me. Pretty simple formulas — and no arrogance required.

I’m with Greg. If Wright’s still on top come football season I’ll be impressed. KK has to be a little worried, though. I guess he’ll have to fabricate some more blockbuster scoops.

I’m in the demo Wright didn’t win, and I hate Stump the Chumps.

Nick Wright needs to go back to playing girls soccer at Barstow

Its funny how he portrays himself as this “urban wankster” in reality he comes from a richy rich background

I definitely don’t think Wright is quite as good as he thinks he is, but I do find myself going to 610 first on my way home.

He’s usually more entertaining during the 15-minute stretch I am in the car. KK is usually talking to a golf buddy or selling something during that time, so I tune out.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses. KK lost a lot of credibility with me with the whole Big 10 non-story. He also comes off as a know-it-all without trying to sound like a know-it-all, which to me comes across as condescending.

Wright, as wonderful as he thinks he is, at least he doesn’t try to hide it.

Wright will have an awfully difficult challenge attracting 50+ (my demographic). While he has his virtues, he sounds like a kid — not only his whiny voice, but his superficial takes (a product of his obvious conceit; if you already know everything, why take the time to delve deeper and learn more?) — which have little appeal to a more mature listener. KK has his faults, including latent toadiness, but he presents a more sophisticated program. Wright possesses neither gravitas nor credibility. Wright’s honesty is appreciated, but he doesn’t sound like he knows what he’s talking about (even on those rare occasions when he may). Style works with younger audiences; there’s got to be more substance for 50+.

I agree with those who believe Petro is the best thing going in this sports-talk market. Not only “Stump the Chumps,” but “The Two-Minute Drill” are excellent segments. Friday after lunch is a good time slot for a radio game show, especially one which is as local as its callers allow it to be. Petro’s certitude on everything is rankling — especially when he’s talking out his ass (pretty much every time he tries to get too deep into baseball) — but his program is consistently entertaining.

    As for the April “book:”

I’ve been in Maguire’s and Wright’s position before, and can tell you it’s a big thrill. I remember when I was programming a classic rocker in a Top 50 market, about the same size as KC, and we knocked off the heritage rock station — and we partied like it was 1999 (which it wasn’t yet). We didn’t refer to it on the air — in fact, we really made our push with no direct challenge issued, but just went about doing the things on the air and promotionally which would meet our goals — but went right back to work in an effort to build on those numbers. That first winning book is nice, but seldom is one sure it’s not an aberration (unless, as we did, considerable in-house research is being done — which we employed for both audience tastes and demographics). It will take a few more books to know whether Wright’s numbers are more than a novelty appeal and the start of the Royals’ season.

I’m curious as to why WHB doesn’t subscribe to Arbitron, unless Union Broadcasting does via a different property or they do such good in-house or contracted research that their numbers are sellable. I’ve never worked in a Top-100 station which was a player in a market which didn’t take Arbitron (or Birch back in its time, which I considered superior).

Let me get this straight … he lost by assorted margins in every category and he’s claiming victory?

He’s claiming victory even though he lost convincingly in total audience and lost by a narrow margin in “key” demographics?

I have grown to despise KK and if this is what it takes to get Petro promoted to drive time, that’s great news as far as I’m concerned; but Nick (dramatic pause) Wright is a no-talent hack that is wrong every bit as often as KK and annoying about twice as often.

One thing everyone’s forgetting is April is pretty much the month that Louie Wright’s son took over the afternoons at 610. The newness factor alone should play into some bit of a ratings pop — hell even I listened for as long as my ears could stand it during April, about 15 seconds. I haven’t been back. And there are those that say my listening choices affect thousands of people’s listening choices.

Wright’s forced voice inflection is extremely annoying and unnatural. Not to mention it is hard for me to think that a snot nosed kid like himself can truly try to convince me that his knowledge on anything pertinent within sports is better than mine. I’ve heard him too many times wax poetic on social issues and it makes me want to vomit.

I enjoy Wright’s show. I won’t claim that it is a must everyday but I feel like he is more dedicated than KK. Just seems like KK has never had any competition and has become complacent.

RUMOR FLOATING: PLAZA 810 ZONE TO CLOSE…
ANYONE HEARD THIS….PART OF PLAZAS ATTEMPT
TO RECRUIT NATIONAL CHAINS INTO THE PLAZA…

HALL> you could get sued for using those
numbers. The ratings service can only bue used
by those who subscribe to the service…your
publishing these numbers could cause you to be
sued fro using those numbers..be careful.

also…these numbers are comparable to the
fiurst quarter of a football game. Few advertisers look at a one month quick shot of
ratings. they look at trends and quarters.
So yes….props to wright and 610 for this
massivewin but don’t pop the champaign too
soon…its a long game and its just in the
    first quarter.

I examined the numbers and believe based on
royals broadcast numbers monday thru thursday
that an extra 25% of wrights audience could
be attributed to the broadcast of the previous
nights royals broadcast. When there was no
nightly broadcast I’m, usre 610’s audience
was down. Thats because people listening to
the game at night turn on their radios and the
first thing they hear is 610. And remember…
channel switching for talk news/sports talk
is significantly less than that of music
    oriented stations.

I see nick riding high for about 4-6 more weeks..
    then falling off.
WHB will make some changes but once we start
football and their additional resourcs as the
pre and post game broadcaster will come into
    play.
The cheifs have summer camp ins t. joe so look
for a huge bump for kcfx and whb starting
    in july.
Wright will have to be tight and strong in his
    show to keep up.
Kietzman will make his show with more punch…
    fewer non essential interviews/spots (bar b q…
Racing….) and more weeks like he had when
he did the big 10 reports.
May should bring back kietzmans audience
numbers with trhee 2 weeks of big10/12
coverage that sent his numbers thru the roof.
Once the royals fall apart…look for whb to
    mount a massive comeback.
Remember these meters are unusual and they
operate based on what frequency is within reach
of the listener. EX. if someone with a
monitor is in a restaurant playing 610…that
    registers on their meter.
If i was whb i would put allo their restaurants
on whb signals because of the crowds they attract.
gLAZIER: keep your money…its a long time
to get the real radio ratings…and besides
you need that for all those hot chicks you
    hang with.

WHB doesnt buy arby because of the cost..
hundreds of thousands of dollars…and with
one station its just too expensive.
they don’t rely on national advertisers as much
as other clusters so they don’t need to
    quote those numbers.
they might get some national buys but they
depend on local advertisers and save quarter
    million dollars.
WHB and boeger are smart. Don’t count them out.
Its just 1-0 in the first quarter. They tale
    this personally.
They might be popping booze at wrights place
but whb is too smart to let this fiasco
    continue.
Look for major shift in may and beyond…
and glazier…i’ll take that bet. Once the
    cheifs come on 610 dies…but i’m betting
on them holding on another 4-6 weeks and
then they go back to being 20thin the market.

The things that KK needs to change:
-The strange cronyism. Kevin Harlan appeals to people… But Jim Colbert? He was a terrible tour player with one or two hot years on the senior tour FIFTEEN years ago. But he went to K- State, By God.
-The incessant promoting at remotes. I mean.. how many times a year will I go to “Smoke and Fire?” I buy my Brinkman Smokers at Sutherland’s and my meat at Hy-Vee.
-His obvious dislike of Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. Grads from those three schools are a massive part of his market.
-They refuse to put a woman on the air in any capacity.
    – They used to worship their callers. Now they act like they are a pain in the rear.

I think times are pretty tough at WHB and they need the Chiefs to win this year. They do operate on a small staff but you gotta think that Bukaty, Kietzman, Clink, Leabo, Petro, and St. John are all making 6 figures. They have some payroll..

Arbitron books costs big bucks. Entercom, most likely, gets a corporate, enterprise-wide package and distributes the costs amongst everyone, or culls it at as a corporate expense.

Royals bump, let’s see what happens in the next three to six months.

Nick pushes too hard to ask people to like him and listen to him. If he’s good, people will come. If you’re REALLY that good, you don’t need to say “We beat #1” or “I’m number 1”, you’ll just be there and you’ll get it.

  40. Anonymous says:

    ShawnF
The end is near? Oh, come on, folks, start thinking with your wallets and not whether or not you like or dislike KK or NW or Petro or Fescoe.

Entercom owns 610, 980 and 1660 on the AM side, 98.9 The Rock, 96.5 The Buzz, 98.1 KUDL, 99.7 KISS, 106.5 The Wolf. That’s a lot of radio, a lot of advertisers and a lot of overhead. Where does 610 fall into that, from an asset standpoint? The transmitter, how far does it reach, etc. If Entercom has to cut costs, who goes first? 610 currently has the Royals right now in contract, but if you look at it down the lines from a cost standpoint, things will go…and 980 is a stronger signal than 610. News isn’t going anywhere, 98.9 is huge in their market, 96.5 and 98.1 are so-so, and I don’t know about the Wolf, but they go up against Q104 and KFKF. 1660 is so low-key they could run them from a rounding error. Don’t be surprised if Entercom just concedes the sports radio market IF push comes to shove from corporate.

Now, I’m not trying to be an 810 homer, or an alarmist, nor am I starting a rumour that Entercom is in trouble. I’m just saying before you start saying the End is Near and 610 is the bee’s knees, don’t be surprised that in a cost-cutting effort (or an FCC mandate about owning too many stations) that 610 just disappears, based on what assets Entercom owns, what it can move around, and what can it do without. 610 is arguably one of their most expensive assets.

My two cents. Please don’t pile on with “Oh, you suck!” or “You’re so wrong!”. Come on with clear concise arguments and I’ll be OK to say I’m wrong.

KK’s show has gotten lazy and at times unlistenable. His K-State partisanship gets taxing as he is always bashing KU and Nebraska. The Racing Boys, The Jim Colbert Hour, talking golf with Clinkscale, his show is old and showing its age.

I have tried to listen to Nick Wright. He tries to go too much in the other direction, and tries to clone his show after Rome’s (a problem that seemed to permeate 610 in past years). Having said that, I hope Wright catches up to KK, and we have some competition, which will be good for the listener. In the meantime, Shannon and Parks is starting to sound better and better in the afternoons on 980.

The restaurant biz in general is very hard right now…so they aren’t at fault..with so many places, I think they have ten around town all under different names, but the 810 zones…if three or four fail, it takes the rest with it many times.

    Everyone –

First, a little lesson. Comparing this April to last April is apples and oranges, Greg. Diary vs PPM is SO very different it’s not even funny. Not only is the methodology different, but the analysis, the data – everything is completely turned upside down.

First, you have forced recall vs actual listening. No, take that back – not actual listening, actual EXPOSURE. See, the PPM is a pager-like device that panelists wear that picks up a subaudible tone encoded in a radio station’s broadcast. Each station has a unique toneburst to identify them. The PPM “pager” timestamps these bursts to the second, giving us a minute-by-minute readout of what people were exposed to – not necessarily listening to – but what was in range of their ear.

Fast forward to this story. Guys, what this has meant for programming analysis is this: there is no clear winner anymore. Personalities don’t take 30 shares out of the market and listeners don’t “Keep it locked” on one station. In fact, the average person hears 5 stations during a listening session and they listen for a shorter amount of time overall.

Plus, the listener’s impatience really shows. Once they hear something they don’t like – BOOM! – they are gone, on to their next favorite station. If that station doesn’t satisfy – BOOM! – and so on.

PPM only now shows what we thought before – the races will be a little closer; the numbers are more compressed. People profess loyalty but flip more than we think. If there are two shows in the same genre (like sports) on at the same time and one doesn’t have what you want why WOULDN’T you flip to the other? It’s just that, under the diary, a person loyal to 810 would just write “810” in the book and Kietzman would fly high on his recognition and propensity for high recall due to 810’s popularity. Now, with actual exposure being recorded there’s no “cooking the books.” The numbers reflect how people actually use radio.

As a side note I will tell you this. I’ve seen the numbers – Nick Wright should not be crowing about this yet. His numbers in individual weeks declined immediately after Opening Day and – in fact – it was THAT GAME – that garned him such a huge overall rating. You’ll see things return to the norm once the May book is issued.

@JustAFan: I never understood why WHB powers down so much at night, is that a clear channel thing (Not the company, but the radio station capability) I noticed that 610 and 980 aren’t clear channels, but 810 is based on Wikipedia’s entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear-channel_station

@Rick – thanks for the kind words. Ha right back! 🙂 Be interested to see what cryptic plans your have in story for the rest of the class.

@Craig Glazer – weird on the restaurants, because aren’t they all owned by KC Hopps? And KC Hopps just took over the old Trolley’s spot in Overland Park on 135th near Antioch and are opening up a Blue Moose there. I can see the Plaza spot closing, that’s been a cursed spot since Canyon Cafe had the fire outside years ago….but why would KC Hopps expand if they were doing poorly?
