Nothing surprising in those comments. He already has given the Royals a hometown discount on one contract; I don’t think anybody expected him to give the team another pass, especially if Moore et al have squandered another youth movement with endless dithering and signings of over-the-hill journeymen. Greinke also has witnessed what happens to someone who does stay out of loyalty: the fans turned on Mike Sweeney even though he signed a $55 million contract that was below market value. Sweeney’s injuries were frustrating, but the fans’ bitterness was more about the success Damon, Beltran and Dye were having than anything Sweeney did or didn’t do.
So the simple question facing Greinke: What case have the Royals made that he should re-sign with them?

I don’t think there is an ounce of disingenuousness in Greinke. He doesn’t elaborate very often, and may do so less in the future after the expected furor dies down.
Still, is there anything really shocking here other than who said them? Greinke probably expresses the sentiments of other Royals — particularly someone like DeJesus, who has been an organizational mainstay (but much more media savvy than Greinke): ‘When the hell are we going to start winning around here?’
I think this will cause more of a stir in the media than the clubhouse or front office. And two years is a long time in today’s game. Zack is hardly an emotional rock, so his feelings may change — or at least he’ll see enough progress by then that he is encouraged about the future. Long-suffering Royals fans certainly hope so.

Two things on this:
First, Greinke doesn’t seem as dumb as I thought he was. He seems like a true realist. He’s not naive enough to believe that we will be good in 2012 like the Royals want us to believe so they can sell tix. It can’t be easy to be on a team like this and lose as much as they do and it’s totally within reason to think all that losing would ruin any players that have went through this terrible decade of baseball on the Royals’ roster. He’s a CyY winner…let’s move him and get some REAL prospects for once. This guy right here is the one to trade to get a REAL corner outfielder and shortstop, and add some pitching.
Second, YOU’RE ON THE F****NG TEAM, MAN!!! If you want to win so bad, then WIN! Get a killer attitude and win. At least when you pitch, win your games.

As a Royals fan, I’d love to see Greinke stay here a long time.
As a Greinke fan, he needs to get the hell out of this town. The team doesn’t give him any run support, and even worse, it doesn’t win. Greinke is too good to wither away in this crap franchise.

This is what the team needs: a deadline. Put together a challenger in the next two years or lose a Cy Young calibre pitcher.
In case you’ve forgotten, in this weak division, every team but the royals has made a nice playoff run in the past 5 years, with one winning the world series and one losing it.

I’ve never thought of Greinke as dumb. He’s aloof, introverted .. a space cadet if you will. I’m pretty certain those sentences didn’t come out as smoothly as they look in print. But it’s obvious he has given the situation serious thought. I’ll say this … he apparently cares more about winning than I thought previously.
The Royals need to get what they can for him and the sooner the better. And I wish Greinke future success.
The Independent Rage
I just try to put myself in Greinke’s shoes. And I was was him, I’d be looking to hop the first train out of here, regardless of whether or not the minor league system is improving. No playoff appearance since 1985 pretty much says it all.
