Nick’s part of that show was terrible. He’s not even close to ready for prime time.

Greg, I hate saying it but your last two columns have been fantastic (if I never post again here it’s because a bolt of lightening has hit me square between the eyes).

I would have loved to listen to Keitzman give this interview. Even though KK has the ego of twelve Whitlocks, I think his professionalism would have taken over.

At the end of the day, Friday afternoon was fantastic radio up until around 4:30. I’m not even pissed that my golf game was cancelled due to mother nature

I agree, Nick Wright ruined what up to his involvement was pretty good radio.

    “walking, talking narcissist neurotic”
That’s a pretty good line GH.

Ditto Donkey Punch. Good work on this one GH. I guess it’s one of my guilty pleasures in reading this soap opera-esque drama in real life. I’ve got a pretty funny x-rated story about Whitlack that I’ll share sometime. He’s got a few skeletons in his closet like most, but probably more than most.

And Covitz, really? Newspapers will be gone in 10 years, if not 5 years. It’s just something that is no longer useful. Like Blockbuster video.

Wright was WAY out of his league Friday. I agree with GH 100%, the interesting part of the three hours was put to a halt when Wright started lobbing softball questions and answering the staged phone calls.

I want to hear from the ‘Nick Wright is a talent, 810 better watch out’ group that posts on this message board. I have zero love for KK, he would have asked tougher question than the OG Gangsta’ of Barstow Wright….

I like Nick Wright, but he obviously doesn’t get what good radio is.

Listeners don’t want to hear Jason Whtilock give a Bob Costas-like take on the big picutre of newspapers relevancy in Kansas City.

Listeners want to hear Whitlock go off on wild, interesting and borderline psycho tangents. Exactly like he did in the first 70 minutes. If Nick truly got it, he’d have crumpled up his paper of questions and pretended text messages weren’t making their way into the studio.

Some may laugh, but Max, Tanna and Moffett would have done a FAR superior job than young Nick. Whitlock used to show up on their KY show and they’d either let him go off, or push one of his buttons to get him going.

The Kay Barnes call was maybe THE worst idea in KC radio EVER. The 2nd worst was Nick’s idea to pepper Jason with questions about rap music.

Not “everyone” in the city was listening.

Something that others keep missing as well is the fact that Jason was working with Fannin and Zieman to become sports editor and change the overall look of the sports page. Only when Fannin suggested a co-editor did Jason turn on him and run to the media with the story of his illicit afair. Whitlock complaining about Fannin’s integrity is a bit hypocritical because he was happy to cash those checks all these years and even work as cohorts the last month or two to revitalize the paper. Had Jason been given the editor job and freedom to change the department a bit, do you think he’d still be there? Hell yes…probably be at the Caddyshack with Fannin necking!

greg you are right. That was an odd couple last night. Randy looked like he was a grandpa who was caught molesting his grandson Nick. Randy kept rubbing his hands. Nick looked 12 with that buzz cut and outfit. Nick has a face for radio. Love the guy but dude needs to sharpen up if hes goign to do TV. Also with Nick’s appearence does this mean 810 is no longer in bed with 5?

Those who think KK would have played hardball with Jason are giving him a bit too much credit. Kietz is the king of kissing ass while interviewing his subjects then trashing them in his next segment.

First, there’s no way in hell The Star was going to make Whitlock editor, co-editor or quasi-editor of the sports page. You don’t put copy in the hands of volcanic personalities.

Second, some people just aren’t cut out for TV. I’m sure Covitz was just looking at the keyboard of his Underwood.

I disagree in the fact that KK has no love lost for Whitlock, therefore I think he could have made it her personal agenda to make him look worse. I do, however, know what you’re talking about with KK, but I’ve seen several instances where he’s been “mean” per se during an interview…see Scott Pollard interview when talking about the purchased car by Taylor

this is going to sound odd. But let me tell you who I think was a winner in this story. Though i now get the impression 41 covered the whitlock story the only channel I saw carry it was 9 and Karen Kornacky. I was very impresswed with her comments and porfessionalism. she has always been thought of as a non reporter. But she didn’t shy away from this story. Good job.

Greg if it were not for you and Hearne, there would have been almost NO Whitlock story before it happened. You guys saw that he was checkin out, nobody else caught on til the last month or so. Nobody. Great job Greg.

The biggest blunder by Nick was simple, he asked a big question early on to Jason…”I hear Fox Sports.com is paying you 2.l million for three years!?” Nick never got an answer from Jason, Nick moved on to quickly so it hung in the air as a FACT. That was the biggest moment to most listeners…see most people don’t care much about Fanin and the Star, they don’t. We do cause we are in it…but people I spoke to after all said the same thing, JASON WON, HE IS GETTIN MILLIONS AT FOR…simple as that, that is all they got out of it, nothing more. Really. Money is the key to most folks about winning and losing. So most KC folk see Jason as a big winner, he is wealthy(he says) and makin millions at Fox…online….hmmmmm……that was Nick’s biggest error, bar none. Wait for an answer don’t jump to the next GREAT QUESTION, so fast, it’s like a comic running to his next joke, so you might like that one more…etc…

Henceforth I will no longer refer to Nick Wright as “Schnoz”. My new name for him is either gonna be Hiroshima Nagasaki, ’cause the guy bombed in his shot at the BIG TIME, or maybe Nick “THE SHITUATION” Wright. He had the perfect opportunity to send Jdub to the psych ward and he blew it. This was his Frost-Nixon moment and his BALLS disappear.

I find it strange that NOTHING about this has been in The Star. C’mon boys and girls for the sake of credibility; something, anything?

Smartman, they never covered this at all, they are too busy watching over the rest of us, to make sure we all behave. Seems they, The Star, need to expose themselves to save face. They won’t.

People are now finally starting to realize that the kid on 610 Sports in the afternoon is…drum roll…a kid. And not an incredibly smart one.

Shan Shariff runs circles around Wright.

Fannin needs equal time. Why not?

    He is fucked anyway.

If he doesn’t land a killer plum job, he should go on radio and scatter his enemies before him, in real time.

Hell, he could use that threat for a killer severance, but me personally, I hope he doesn’t.

Yeah, Fannin should land a killer gig.

    What a great opportunity.

Fuck it Fannin, go all in!

P.S. Smartman is right, the lack of coverage in the local fishwrap of record is inexcusable.

    Hey Greg,

Your love for Covitz is shining through… care to tell the story of why he deserves to be mocked and ridiculed?

    ___

GH: I just call ’em as I see ’em. And I saw a guy in Covitz last night who is a member of the media and well within range of my OTC who I thought needed to get spanked. Worrying about whom gets their feelings hurt by what I write is not a columnist’s concern…at least not this columnist. Where is all the concern when Covitz or a sportswriter rips the athletes they cover?

I remember a debate between Whitlock and KK about 5-7 years ago re. K-State’s weak scheduling. It was embarrasing how badly Whitlock sounded. KK pummeled him. I think this would have had the exact same result.

Nick Wright BOMBED. WAAAAY out of his league. Whitlock dissed him to his face and Wright never said a thing to defend himself…because Jason was right. Face for radio is right. Holy crap, Wright is weird looking. The whole thing was a train wreck. Whitlock breaking down and crying was pretty strange and uncomfortable. I bet METRO SPORTS regrets having that trash on the air…oh wait, they have local Wrestling on now…

GH: “Where is all the concern when Covitz or a sportswriter rips the athletes they cover?”

Eh, there is plenty of concern expressed in these instances by those who care about those sorts of things… I just thought that maybe you had another Keitz-ate-my-baby story in regards to Covitz.

To hot for mainstream media…I thought they would regret cutting Jason loose, but never for the reasons that are emerging. I’m sure if they[Star} do take a swing it will be measured and you can count on it having some Wallop…
Don’t think Joe Sixpack has any interest in who’s zoomin who at The Star.
