Three in a row about KU from OTC?
That only means one thing, beings there is never a positive comment EVER posted here.
I wonder what would happen if there is ever a good sports team in this city? No more OTC posts?
Glow1
Dude, there are always going to be people that like to break balls. That’s what being a sports fan is all about. Is there really anything positive to talk about with KU right now anyway? Let’s wait until October and Josh Selby is cleared before we start with hoops. Football is looking at 0-12. Lew is leaving athletic department in flames. BGL seems to have an agenda that might not be as friendly to athletics as Hemmenway. It sucks right now but stick your balls out there and take the beating. That’s all we Jayhawk fans can do at the moment.
KU Fan
Your best OTC yet, Greg.
Cliffy
He has a point, Greg. If it weren’t for you, Ron Prince wouldn’t be getting that fat payday from KSU and D.Wash would still be on the roster at MU.
Damn messengers. Always stirring up trouble.
Johnny Utah
Bitter KU fans and jealous MU and KSU fans will remember Lew for his failures, but 2007-08 school year is something I’ll never forget, and I’ll give Lew some credit for that.
How many schools would kill for a BCS bowl win and basketball National Title in the same year?

This settlement deal is sleezy. Bangin’ your underage sister, sodomizing the neighbors 2 year old, hangin’ a dog from a tree, Jerry Springer watchin’ SLEEZY. Ignorant, arrogant, greedy bastard. I wish nothing but pure evil on this greaseball.

Lou is getting too much credit from the likes of nick above. If Self and Mangino aren’t winning games, donors aren’t donating. Lew didn’t hire either.
Case in point Lew’s Gridiron Club…the posh club seat project unveiled before the disastrous 2009 FB season. If Lew was such a good fundraiser, why’d that flop so quickly? Oh yeah, the team loses 7 in a row, despite having the ‘best’ senior class in school history. Bill Self is biggest fundraiser in that town, Lew road his (and Mangino’s) coattails.
He gets some credit for the Orange Bowl if he really did pull strings to get KU the invite, but again, if Mangino doesn’t beat everyone on the schedule that year but MU, there’s no chance for an invite.
Oh and make sure you back out Lew and Mangino’s hush money when quoting that new huge athletic budget.

I am not glad Lew is gone,
I am not glad he came,
I am not really worthy to judge him much at all…. I do not fully understand how all of this BIG MONEY COLLEGE BS works.
btw- I think the only ones worthy to be pissed and make big judgements are the college athletes who are the ones doing the heavy lifting… and the resson the money comes in… That will change sooner or later, it is not fair for old fkrs like Lew and the Fat man to make millions while the kids wind up with only an education. Maybe there should be an athletes funds for kids who do well and bring the fans. I am not sure how to set it up, but it should exist.
I thought it sucked the way Lew tossed out all the old time ticket holders, but on the other hand he brought in people who were happy to pay up, and from what I understand he doubled the donations and upgraded the venues.
Unlike anyone here, Lew was on commission. He was paid for performance and it appears he did a good job. If you have always been on the dole… getting a lil bs fixed bi-weekly check for performing a lil bs task, if you are a simple worker bee, you can not understand what it is like to work on straight commission.
On commssion NO RESULTS=NO PAY. BIG RESULTS=BIG PAY. If you have not done it, you are unworthy to judge the people who do…. but you will take pop shots anyway… and print garbage anyway…. it is pretty sad.
My issue with this “blogger” is…. if he is going to ying…. he should also yang.
BUT he ONLY EVER print things when they are bad, and NEVER print things when they are good. It makes his credibility zero, He is a joke, a tabloid kook.
I say this to possibly open things up. I dont have much hope, but maybe …. who knows.
KU has a lot going for it… but the anti-KU zealots NEVER post that, they NEVER post when there is nice win or anything positve, they only post negative garbage, it is kind of sad. It also gives them zero credibility.

dp,
Don’t ya have a feeling that if say, somebody like Al Bohl was A.D. the last 7 years, our football and basketball facility upgrades would look maybe 30% as good as they do now?
I’m not saying I liked Perkins as a person or liked his style and way of getting things done. But he DID get things done.
I think maybe everything worked out pretty well for KU fans. We got someone like Lew to come in here and throw his weight around and get things done. We got a little cleaning up to do, but I say it was all worth it.
I’m worried WAY more about who Gray-Little will put in charge the next 7 years, than any residue Perkins may have left behind.
If Turner Gil’s squad looks like a junio high team the rest of the season, THEN I might start squawking about Perkins.
Stevo
well he’s gone now so good I guess…but $2 million dollars out the door is not very much money when he doubled the athletic budget. a lot of people on here fail to see the big picture.
Cliffy
Legitimate question … do you really think Lew had no idea what was going on in the ticket office?
Former KU official seeks sentencing delay
The Associated Press
WICHITA, Kan. | A former University of Kansas athletics official has asked a federal judge to delay his sentencing in a case tied to a $1 million ticket scalping scandal at the school.
Jason Jeffries, the school
Uncle Dick
The big picture. Hitler murdered six million Jews, started WWII, and left Europe in ruins, but hey, he sure brought the German people together.
Scott Taveau, the former Superintendant of Liberty Public Schools, who ran rough-shod over the district, squandered countless hundreds of thousands of dollars, scamed the Missouri Teacher’s Retirement Fund, prompting an audit by the State Auditor’s office and a police investigation, and drank himself silly up and down the California coast on the taxpayer’s dime, is out of jail and needs a job. Maybe Burnadebt Gray-Little could give him a call, as he seems to be well qualified for the KU AD position.
Gavin
Cliffy, your question is a serious and valid one so let me just say this: I don’t know. It does seem unlikely that he could NOT have known but “unlikely” doesn’t mean “impossible.” As I said yesterday, the timing of this makes me nervous. Maybe it’s coincidental to the disatrous game Saturday and this had been in the works for quite awhile and maybe someone decided that after that debacle they’d had enough. I don’t know. So, I am willing to concede the point that Lew may have known what was going on and maybe he even had his hand out when everything was happening, but it seems unlikely to me that if the Chancellor had knowledge that Perkins knew about it and was in on it, paying him off would be stupid beyond belief. After all, firing him with cause would be pretty easy if he really can demonstrably be proven to have known or been a part of it.
Now, let me ask you an equally serious question: After the feds are done investigating (bear in mind, this will be the FBI, complete with subpoena power, not an NCAA flunky who can only wheedle and beg), if they clear Perkins will you let it go or will you still be suggesting in a year that Perkins knew about all of this? Because if he’s cleared in a federal investigation, I’m not sure there’s a whole lot of room left to bitch about it after that.
Cliffy
Gavin … it would depend. There’s a big difference between being found “innocent” and merely being found “not guilty.” I would have to take everything into consideration.
BTW, I don’t see how this could have anything to do with the NDSU debacle. That would be a gross overreaction and just plain stupid.
Whatever happens, I’ll remember him as a scumbag who raised a lot of money but pissed a lot of people off and left in disgrace with his pockets full.
Jayhawk Fan
imuho, at worst, Lew turned a blind eye to it, but I bet he had no idea.
Lew put people in charge and those people abused the system for personal profit. I doubt Lew ever profited from the ticket scam. Why would he corrupt the very thing he instituted?
I will say it again….
the only people whit a valid right to complian about this is the millionaires who gave money to get good seats… only to find out later it was corrupt. The signs were there, people complained, people in charge should have listened. fkn dumbasses… check and balances… checks and balance.. who watches the watchmen? Cant anyone be beyond reproach in this fkn bs corrupt world?
The reason we pay guys like Lew so much money is… it is in their power to make money in other ways (like the ticket scam thing). We are hopefully paying them enough to be trustworthy. wthf?
I do not Lew ever profited from the ticket scam. It would seem kind of nickle and dime compared to other things he was working on. He was paid enough for his work, there was no need to skim.
On the other hand some fkrs are just plainfkncrazy insanenutjob wackos who, no matter what, or how good they have it, will will do something to fk it up e.g. Tiger; making 100s of millions and having the most beautiful woman on the planet as a wife and a growing family… and what does he do? SOMETHING TO FK IT UP…..
In conclusion, imuho, no matter the outcome of any FBI CIA DEA ATF KBI UNO YAHTZEE KUNGFU or BILLYBOBTHORNTON investigation…. the anti-KU zealots will never drop it or ever let it go. They will forever will be suggesting Lew knew something and is the spawn of Satan herself, it is the nature of their beast.
Go Big 12… lets do some good this weekend….. damn it.
Gavin
Well, he will never be found “innocent” of anything. That’s not how it works. They will decline to proceed with charges or they will charge him and he will either be found not guilty or convicted. “Innocent” is not one of the options. They might not charge him because even though they think he’s dirty as hell, they can’t prove it. So, if your standard is innocence I think we already know you won’t be letting this go anytime soon.
My point is that Perkins is a Rohrshach test for everyone, KU fans and haters alike. People see in him what they want to see. You see a lying scumbag who pissed off a lot of people and left in disgrace with his pockets full. I’m betting Ptolemy sees him in a similar fashion.
But I see him a bit differently. Keep in mind, I’m not some well-heeled Williams Fund donor. I make a small contribution every year but I don’t buy basketball tickets and my football tickets are usually assigned to me on the last or next to last day, so I’m one of the small donors who has reason to be pissed. In fact, when he started doing his new system, I lost my decent but not great football tickets and would have had to pay something like eight grand to keep them. The thing is, I realized that by making people pay what the market would bear, he was maximizing value. I know a lot of bluehairs got pissed when they lost the seats in Allen that they viewed as a family heirloom but too fucking bad. There are people willing to pay more for those seats, so why do you have some sort of right to keep them? Yes, you’ve been loyal but the people who are willing to pay are also loyal. So, I guess I don’t really care who he pissed off. He did what he thought was best for his department. If some members of the class of ’48 want to get cranky because they can’t afford to keep their seats AND a steady supply of butterscotch candies, that’s too bad.
As for the parts about him lining his pockets and spending too much money, well, that doesn’t bother me too much either. The business about trading seat upgrades for exercise equipment bothers me the most of all that stuff because he was, clearly, getting personal gain from it. But I don’t care that he took the school airplane everywhere he went because he was keeping the money coming in and that’s his job.
In the end, I think that he did was he was paid to do. He got some benefits to which he wasn’t entitled and I don’t like that, but I can’t imagine how I could care less about him pissing off cheapskate alums or the style in which he traveled as long as it was aboveboard.
Which leaves stuff like the exercise equipment, which I won’t try to defend because it’s indefensible. But I will say that it’s small potatoes that I’m willing to live with as long as he keeps doing his job.
Cliffy
I didn’t mean guilty or innocent in a legal sense. I realize nobody is ever found “innocent.” I’m talking common sense. Sometimes you can’t prove something beyond a shadow of a doubt even though you know it stinks. This stinks.
The same thing has taken place at Mizzou and lots of other places in terms of fundraising. People who have had their season tickets for next to nothing for years get pissed off when things change. But, do you really think Lew helped his own cause by pushing the blue hairs out of their seats and then plopping his fat ass courtside next to the radio team? Seemed pretty stupid to me. A lot of things he did seem pretty stupid to me, but he raised a lot of money so he’ll always have a soft spot in the Jayhawk heart, I guess.
Gavin
Don’t look at me as representative of the true Jayhawk heart. I really don’t know if I’m in he majority on Lew. I’m glad we had the guy because I don’t think that many other guys would have been able to do the fundraising and get the results that Perkins did (and I don’t mean the Orange Bowl and the 2008 NCAAs, Hall has a point that those coaches weren’t hired by him). I mean the football practice facilities and, of course, the money. He did those very well, IMO, and I’m glad he did them because if Turner Gill doesn’t work out, the work Lew did will make it more likely we are able to hire a good coach to replace him.
As for him being tone deaf on kicking out the bluehairs and then sitting courtside, again, small potatoes. Maybe that’s a bit tone deaf, but he’s the CEO of that corporation and can sit wherever he wants as far as I’m concerned. Jerry Jones wants to hold up fans for PSLs and then stands down on the sidelines for the whole game. Clark Hunt holds the Chiefs hostage for a redecorated stadium and he’s got his owner’s box to sit in that he didn’t pay for. It’s the same thing here. Like I said about Perkins, he’s a Rohrshach test. Those bluehairs he kicked out were never going to give him a break even if he’d taken the worst seat in Allen. They’re convinced he’s a bad guy and will never see him as otherwise, so who cares whetehr they like him or he was tone deaf in where he sat for games?
All I’m saying is that I think the good he did for KU sports outweighed the negatives, and god knows there were negatives.

GREG-This is semi related to the Lew Perkins story. I’m always interested in the office politics. And so to watch TV 5 do a report on this story with Nick Wright as their expert. And then see him on the sunday evening show. Meanwhile 810 is running spots and last year Soren and K.K. were brought in on the Chiefs pre game shows. Leads to the question What Gives? Has 810 lost favor at KCTV 5? Thanks for whatever insight you can provide.
___
GH: Last year TV 5 had no sports department. They partnered with the talent at 810 to help host their Chiefs preseason package. This year an entire new staff is in place at TV 5, complete with their own sports department. It just makes sense that they would want to promote their own people rather than 810’s.

Truth is reality funneled through the collective prism of perception, knowledge and experience. Lew Perkins is a scumbag. That’s the truth!

as tony soprano always said…
I LOVE THE GUY…HE’S AN EARNER!
and thats why the ku people loved lew perkins…
he was an earner…and thats what counts!

I wanna be an Anti KU zealot! Where do I sign up? Or do I have to wait for bball season, because it’s too easy now?
smartman
Maybe in his spare time Lew can take up bike riding.
MrOlathe
Smartman….that was kind of a bad thing to say. Really bad. But it brings up a point. If Bob Frederick would have stayed in charge, where would KU be today? He really didn’t do a very good job of convincing Roy Williams to stay (Perkins kept Bill Self around). And Frederick let BBall be king and, as we all know, football drives the bus. Lew knew this. Frederick (yes he was a very good man and I’m really not trying to talk bad about him especially after his passing) allowed KU to really sink by ignoring football while KSU saw that football was the future (that hurt to write). And I know there was the brief Al Bohl tenure (what a debacle!). But it was a step in the right direction. And he did a few good things: Hired Mangino and allowed drinking at tailgating again (btw..wtf? Why couldn’t we drink at tailgates?)
Cliffy
Geez, smartman. Just had a mental of Lew in one of otight-fitting bikers outifts.
See this quote from the NDSU coach? Gavin … you were there. Couldn’t you get the crowd any more fired up than that? Embarrassing ….
“I think the environment that we’re going to play in Cedar Falls is going to be much more of a hostile environment than Memorial Stadium in Kansas. That was pretty docile. And the type of team that we’re going to be playing is going to be a much more physical, aggressive football team than KU. And quite frankly I think we’re going to be playing a better opponent.”
Gavin
Yeah, I saw it Cliffy. The best I can say is that the crowd was reacting to the horrible product on the field. If you’re looking for me to try and defend KU’s performance, you should bring your lunch beauce you’ll be waiting awhile. Dude gets to say what he wants as long as he can point to the scoreboard.
I will say that I think nine out of ten times KU wins that game although it’s not as if I can really point to anything that would prove my point. I think it’s kind of a cheap shot to take in a Lou Holtz-ian fashion to poor mouth your position so you can play up your next game, but he has the right to take the shot if he wants, classy or not. I do think it sort of downplays what may end up being his biggest win. If I were him I’d be making sure my players got the message that they won a big game and not that they were fortunate to play in front of a docile crowd and barely won a game in which they couldn’t score a touchdown. If the next team they play really is better than KU, what hope do they have? But that’s just me.
Jay
Reguards tailgateing no booze allowed on state property. State had to pass a law in the early 70’s to allow the Gov. to have achohol in the Gov. Mansion so he would not be breaking the law. reguargs Perkins He was needed to shake KU up and into present day with the rest the Big 12 schools. It had to be an outsider and being from a basketball school helped. The way raised money is it really so much different then the Texas, OU,Ohio State, Florida and Notre Dames of the world. What system do KSU & MU use? I’m sure KSU hit hard people to get it going w/ Snyder and hit it harder when he did get it there.
