My kid plays for a Metro catholic school team and the type of play you describe would have got him benched and reprimanded for at least the rest of the half, and probably for the game. Any reoccurrence would mean missing a game. I don’t think such response is particular to any school with good coaches, be they public or private.

Great win by Missouri…VERY impressive and HUGE for the program.

    REALITY CHECK:

    1. Missouri has 3 road games left (Nebraska, Texas Tech, Iowa State) of which they’ll lose at least 1 (Nebraska), and possibly 2 because:

    2. Pinkel will pull a Pinkel. Greg you point out the 2-point decision. ALSO….with 1:50 left, on 3rd and 2 at OU’s 40 (no timeouts for OU), Pinkel decides on a quick pass. It’s batted away, MU punts, and OU has over a 1:30 to make a last-ditch effort. If MU runs the ball on 3rd and 2 and is stopped, OU gets the ball with :45 or less.

    3. If the above happens, MU will be staring a non-BCS bowl….Cotton perhaps?

Greg, nice reporting on the Gardner game. Bubba looks amazing. I see no way the Trail Blazers lose another game before maybe the State Championship. If only we could see Gardner take on Olathe East or Rockhurst.

Great win for the tigers but if we lose to
nebraska it follows 40 years of roller
    coaster seasons.
Hall…where were you 8 weeks ago?
Watched the game at the well in waldo…glad
to see all the mu fans come out.
But they don’t deserve anything yet. Beat
nebraska and run the schedule…beat down the
hawks by 50 points…then replay the sooners
and beat them again…the play for national
championship and bring home that big glass
football…then i’ll bitch at the star for
lack of coverage…we aint done nothing yet!
Remember hall…this aiin’t st. louis and
tiger alumni here are far outnumbered by ku
    and kstate alums……
    OUR TIME IS COMING!
MU 35 nebraska 21……mu defense is on a
roll….smith is back…and hpefully theres no
downpour like last year in columbia….
GABBERT FOR HEISMAN! AT least for today…
    may change next week!

MU must be taken seriously now that they have beaten a good South team. But Hall is right, going 11-1 and not winning the North and going to a non-BCS bowl game is something Pinkel has done before. This team plays defense though. Nebraska opened as a touchdown favorite. Can Pinkel get the team up two weeks in a row? Win up there and start planning for a rematch with OU and national title hype…if not, make plans for Holiday Bowl or Cotton Bowl.

What a great weekend in KC, Chiefs/Mu both getting it done. Look Craig was down on the Chiefs before the season, can you blame him? He and I always argue over this, but sadly the last five years, he was right, they did stink. Now he is on board, so I’ll let him on with me.

    WOW!!!

I am a KU fan, crimson and blue tried and true, but I am not one of these nut jobs who hates the “other side” just to be a hater……

….with that said, I was VERY impressed with mu the other night. It is a good thing we have 3 TVs in the sports room (because my beloved Jayhawks were also on) so we could watch all the sports on (MLB payoffs too)… and I will admit that KU football this year is pretty bad…. while mu is looking great.

…anyway…. There is nothing as sweet as beating number 1 in college football, it is a lot harder than beating number 1 in basketball. In basketball the best team can have an off night, and missa lot shots while the other team gets lucky…… but in football a team has to be really good to take, and give, a pounding to the #1 ranked team….. and mu pulled it off. GOOD JOB.

    ps
    and …. uh ….yes….. ok…
I will give a lot of props to mu and …… and ……. and …damn it … I hate to say it but …. but … but …jojo was correct, he called this last year….

Teams eventually reflect the personalities of their coaches and Saturday we’ll see a disciplined Missouri team against a smart but inexperienced, undisciplined and at times whiny team. Nebraska will have a few calls not go their way – Pelini will whine, his team will respond similarly and Mizzou will eventually pull away for a double-digit win.

Whenever I’ve used or seen the term “hook-and-ladder” on message boards such as Tigerboard, I’ve always been corrected by some wiseguy saying that it’s actually “hook-and-lateral.” But does it really matter that much? And which one is really correct, anyway?

Early in his “career,” back when he & Bukaty were on 980 with Petro, Fescoe was actually a very rabid anti-MU voice. He didn’t even try to disguise it. Maybe he should go back to that, as it couldn’t hurt the ratings — even if MU fans found the old Fescoe even more annoying that the current incarnation. Annoying sells. See Howard Cosell, Kevin Kietzman, Nick Wright, Jason Whitlock, etc.

The shenanigans during the Aquinas/Gardner-Edgerton game certainly sound highly inappropriate, particularly for high school kids. But that said, I have to admit the description of those events (dirty tricks, “kicking a man when he’s down,” etc.) actually had me laughing because it conjured up images of the original Longest Yard film and the finale game between the cons and the hacks. Maybe I’m just sick in the head, or at least have watched way too much pro wrestling over the years.

As for MU, I have the same mindset as I did in 2007: Just enjoying the ride, however long it may last. As for debates over how much the OU win is diminished or tarnished by a loss to NU, I couldn’t care less. Just keeping winnin’, baby!, and the rest will take care of itself.

  17. Anonymous says:

Jeez, Greg. What difference does a fanbase’s mindset make? Why does it bother you? As long as Pinkel has the PLAYERS’ mindset right, I don’t give a damn.

And besides, if wanting to win so badly makes you look like Nebraska fans during and after their loss to Texas, I’ll take the Mizzou fanbase mindset any day of the week.

Booing every call on national tv, harrassing players after the game, vandalizing cars … embarrassing.

I also can speak from experience that the Catholic school sports programs that my contemporaries and I participated in regularly crossed the line into dirty play. But it was okay because we were soldiers of Christ and said a prayer before and after the game.

Ridiculous. Nebraska hasn’t scored three touchdowns at home since Sept 11.

Will I see you in Lincoln this weekend, Greg?

You failed to mention where Mr. Bubba Starling will be playing next year.

The Huskers aren’t a td favorite for no reason. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Husker D was built to beat their exact scheme. Unless they can learn to run the ball in the next four days, it will look an awfully lot like the NU-OSU game this past Saturday.

    GBR.
    ___

GH: I think Bubba will be playing for the Yankees next year. As much as I’d like to see him ease Nebraska’s entrance into the B10 the next four years, I think his 95 mph fastball is his diploma.

Can’t make it to Lincoln for the Tigers’ last trip. My son has a HUGE cross country meet this Saturday at Longview Lake where four of the best CC teams in the state will go at it at Sectionals. Lee’s Summit North is nationally ranked, Liberty upset LSN at conference, Rockhurst beat Liberty at Rim Rock and Ray-Pec has loads of talent and the hottest runner in the state in Devon Young. I’ll be at Longview Lake all morning and then sitting in front of the tube all afternoon (getting yelled at by my wife to be quiet).

Congrats Mizzou for giving the area a great day of National pub. Greg that is hilarious about that kickoff return..that was fucking sureal drama,no?
Why is it that whenever Mizzou has a National spotlight game..its always at night, always appears kind of dark, pouring down rain or zero degrees, shit is always breaking down like ABC’s audio feed, I love it! Good win. I jumped on the bandwagon a couple of weeks ago…1st time I’ve ever seen Mizzou with a little RAH RAH spirit.

Greg, tell me you’re going to Lincoln! I’m heading up Saturday morning. I think pretty much any Nebraska fan I’ve talked has the attitude that if they were a Misery fan they’d feel pretty good coming into to Lincoln this weekend the way Nebraska has been playing at home. Should be a wild game either way. I think T Martinez showed this weekend if teams are going to stack the box he can wing it a bit. The guy is probably one of the deadliest players in college ball. If MU tries to bring heat in the form of a blitz, he could really make them pay. Then on Misery’s side, you got Gabby. While you won’t see the undisciplined coverage that you saw OU put in against him he’ll get some yards. The real thing to watch is the MU running game. Hunter gashed Nebraska. Either way, this game is gonna be a doozy.

First of all my sincere apology to the Tiger Fans. I predicted a Pinochet quality beatdown that would make Hanibal Lecter cringe. I was wrong.

A friend of mine’s daughter works for ESPN Gameday as a PA. She was texting her dad all day about how blown away the ESPN’ers were by the location, vibe and turnout in Columbia. GREAT JOB TIGER FANS.

So the GREASERS from GARDNER lay the pipe to the fish eating SOC’S from Aquinas and they act out like all spoiled JOCO BRATS do. All the Aquinas coaches should be FIRED for letting it happen and not pulling the offenders out of the game right away. LOW CLASS CUNTS.

    Stay Golden Bubba!

If Bubba has an IQ above 50 he goes MLB. Who’d you rather be at 50, Brett Favre or Mariano Rivera?

If MU chokes at Nebraska this weekend last Saturday was nothing more than a really good handjob; which sometimes ain’t a bad thing.

I don’t know if Catholic school teams are any dirtier than any others (and I had plenty of exposure during my school days in St. Louis). However, maybe it isn’t frowned upon as much. After all, Catholics have the confessional to cleanse one’s soul of sin, whereas Protestants’ perpetual guilt may be a deterrent.

I agree with you, Greg, that Mizzou will have to strike while the iron is hot. On the other hand, it may be possible that Pinkel is slowly building his program into parity with the South teams. It’s not impossible, and certainly over the next couple of years it seems the Tigers will have talent that can match up with that of Texas and Oklahoma. Of course, there’s no telling the future, so I would never advise any team to look past the next game — especially if that next game is Missouri at Nebraska.

    8. Someone tell Marvin Lewis there is never a good reason to go for two points in the third quarter of a football game.

Seriously, coaches have these little cards that tell them when to go for two and when to kick an extra point. They should be forbidden from looking at the card until the final five minutes of the game. Before then, there

GH – best of luck to your son. If he has his old man’s wheels, he should crush it. Don’t forget to watch Without Limits the night before. I tend to run a couple clips faster everytime I race after watching that.

While I’m at the game screaming my lungs out (without getting tisk-tisked), you’ll be enjoying the lyrical stylings of Ron Franklin. Have fun with that.

Ummn, did anyone mention that Gardner Edgerton went for a two point conversion, while up by 30+ points in the second half? Or did they mention that, that ass, Coach Marvin Diener from GE still had Bubba and his offensive AND defensive starters in until 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Diener was obviously going for the style points that it takes to get ranked nationally. LOL

I’m not trying to justify what the Aquinas kid did, I’m just sayin. And along those lines, isn’t that the terrible chance we take, when we expose 17-18 year old kids to national TV? High school football has NO place on ESPN, especially when it results in a kid getting BLASTED like he is on internet boiards like this one. And yes, I know the kids name, I just refuse to blast it anymore than it already has been. God only knows I wouldn’t want what I did at 17 to be pasted all over the internet…would you?

By the way, the TOOL who previously mentioned that Gardner could take on Rockhurst, or Olathe East? Well I can’t speak for Olathe, but Rockhurst would lay a beatdown on GE like a red headed step child. Not EVEN in the same class. We’ll see how GE is NEXT year, when Bubba is gone, probably back to mediocrity. Bubba IS truly a once in a lifetime athlete.

    ___

GH: Fred, As I watched the game, it was obvious to me that GE decided to respond to Aquinas’ cheap play on the scoreboard. While their head coach’s decision to pour it on is questionable and definitely not a show of sportsmanship, it was in response to some of the most flaggerant dirty play I have seen on a football field at any level. Yeah, it was that bad.

As for Jake Wernel getting his name splashed across the Internet, he deserves all the negative pub he is getting. Let’s hope he reads every word of it and decides to make a change in how he competes on the field. Pretending what he did can be excused as age related would be an injustice to Wernel. Time to face up to life and all the good and bad your decisions bring, Jake. You have plenty of time to still become a man your family can be proud of.

Yup, remember the story of the Catholic school in it’s pregame locker room prayer by Fr. O’Malley who, with his Irish accent said, “Oh Lord, please protect the players from both schools tonight. Please allow all the potential from our boys to come through in the way that they play. As we play hard, and fight through our adversities, we do it in Jesus’ name, Amen. NOW, LET’S GO OUT AND BREAK THEIR BONES!”

It is not about Public or Private but about specific coaches. This last week in Omaha we had a similar game between Central and Bryan. Neither team going to the playoffs, Central got out to a pretty good lead. A friend of mine said the a couple of Bryan players then began playing dirtier than he had ever seen (offensive players tackling and throwing punches and kicking once on the ground). There was an all out brawl between the teams, it got so bad they sent the cheerleaders home before the end of the game. Surprisingly the Refs met at midfield and with the coaches and decided to continue the game. Centrals response to Bryan was a 62-3 victory with the starters in almost to the end.

Fred Flintstone sounds like a St. Thomas Aquinas fan. If Bubba Starling really is a once in a lifetime athlete, it makes what St. Thomas Aquinas did even worse. Potentially ruining a very promising career in baseball or football. It was so obvious he didn’t have the football with that late hit, I’m shocked he wasn’t ejected from the game immediately. Players have been ejected for less than that. Just a sad display from a football program on national television. If you’re a fan of that program and are complaining that people are over reacting, you are just creating an atmosphere that allows dirty play. Take accountability for your actions.
