OTC: How Did Mizzou Get So Bad So Fast?

“I think you guys were the ones that wanted me pulled. Everybody on my team wanted me out there. I wanted to be out there. Your guys’ opinions on who should get yanked, what should be called, really does not matter to us at all.”
Blaine Gabbert, MU quarterback, responding to reporters on Monday about his play at Texas Tech, Kansas City Star
GH: I think Gabby might be 1-for-2 in his comments above. I’m pretty sure there were a few more MU fans calling for James Franklin than Gabbert knows. But as far as the media not having a say in who plays, that is a no brainer. What I am beginning to wonder is whether or not Gabbert has the brain power necessary to handle his role as Mizzou’s QB. Read on.

“Blaine Gabbert for some reason has a tremendous chip on his shoulder for the media and I don’t understand it. I don’t know who’s done him wrong, frankly. This is not the first time he has used the ‘you-guys’ card, like it is somehow our fault that he threw for 95 yards Saturday.”
Dennis Dodd, CBSsportsline.com college writer, 810 AM
GH: The criticism of Gabbert’s play is justified. He was not only awful in Lubbock but looked completely unable to reverse his poor play. An NFL-quality QB has to be able to realize why things aren’t working and adjust. Gabbert looked anything but NFL ready against TT.

“Where (the Texas Tech loss) came from is out of stubborn pride. Too proud to admit that possibly you do not have all the answers. Too stubborn to change even if, deep down, you know need to. Tech changed quarterbacks when it was doing nothing on offense. Missouri stuck with the same quarterback when he was overthrowing receivers by yards. Yards, not inches or feet. Remember when Chase Daniel replaced an injured Brad Smith and beat Iowa State? I was thinking about that as James Franklin never moved off the sideline.”
Mike DeArmond, PowerMizzou.com

“There were several plays in the first half where (Gabbert) would touch it and float it over the receivers’ hands. He got lucky because it didn’t get picked. He did much better the second half.”
Trent Green, on accessing the Mizzou quarterback’s play against Oklahoma, 810 AM
GH: The former Chiefs’ QB made these comments about Gabbert play in the first half after MU’s big win over Oklahoma. Green saw something in Gabbert that he didn’t like. I have been a huge proponent of Gabbert’s talent but his play of late – and his response to criticism – has me thinking he might not be who I thought he was.

"Life’s a garden, dig it, gotta make it work for ya."-Joe Dirt”
Blaine Gabbert, late Sunday night, Twitter
GH: When your starting QB is quoting Joe Dirt – and he ain’t doing it to be funny – you might want to check his IQ.

“It sounds like (Gabbert’s) a little bit immature. At least football immaturity where he can’t take criticism.”
Dennis Dodd, 810 AM
“There’s not much that a reasonable Missouri fan can take away from Saturday’s flop of a game and consider a step in the right direction. Yes, the Tigers broke off two long touchdown runs. Yes, the defense came away with a clutch takeaway in the red zone. And yes, the punter is pretty good. Got anything else? I sure don’t.”
Dave Matter, columnist, Columbia Tribune
GH: Mizzou, in very familiar Mizzou form, has plummeted from a BCS title contender to a team battling to finish third in the B12 North…and all within the span of two weeks. It is not like this is uncharted territory for Tiger Nation.
“All year long I have been trumpeting Gary Pinkel and what a big fan I am of Gary Pinkel. But now I understand why Missouri fans at 7-0 weren’t buying in. The second half of that football game was inexcusable and quite frankly sad. They got away from the run in the second half.”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM
GH: Gary Pinkel is as polarizing an individual in the state of Missouri since Harry Truman. Is he a godsend or the antichrist?

“As a program as a whole, I just don’t understand what Missouri fans want. Do they need a new coach? Has Gary Pinkel taken them as far as he can? To reach the next level do they need a new coach? I don’t believe that.”
Josh Klingler, 610 AM

“I think as much as Gary Pinkel has helped the (MU football) program evolve, he’s holding it back.”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM

“I picked Missouri by 21 points. I was wrong. At this point, I don’t know what else to say. What are the exceptions: The wins over A&M and OU or the losses to Nebraska and Tech? I don’t know. What this team is, still, is incredibly inconsistent.”
Gabe DeArmond, PowerMizzou.com
GH: Mizzou gets to make a statement about its season on Saturday in Columbia against a rejuvenated Kansas State team. A win rights the Tiger ship toward respectability. A loss might be as devastating to Pinkel’s program as any in the past five years.

    Go Big Red
As much as I take pleasure in the fact that Brothers Gabby are not in any way involved with the Conrhuskers, it sure does suck to have an justin beiber coiffed qb who thinks he is entitled to everything. Everything is all gravy when you are winning, but that gravy turns to poop when you lose a few games eh Blaine.. I hope the little brother handles adversity better than big brother. In order for Pinkle to un-Pinkle himself he needs to sit Blaine and kick that dirty hippy Yost from the oc spot. Then they can truly focus on 3rd place in the North and a spot in a christmas day bowl. Go Big Red.

down comes State Missouri, over-hypes all. __________________________________ ~ ~ ~ "How Did Mizzou Get So Bad So Fast?" ~ ~ ~ like the imitation pro team the western side the state, they weren’t ever good, just appeared so, much as a 10-foot visual paint job in car parlance. Once they’d been more closely observed all of the defects became clear – the slipper didn’t fit kcinderella or the tigers…

    Mizzou QB
I think he’s hurt. Somewhere. 96 yards with THAT defense? Seriously, he hasn’t looked good for two games now. He looks lost and confused when the first reads aren’t there. We already call Gary Pinkel "Marty" on this side of the state. I think you can guess why. Following Mizzou football is like being on a roller coaster…up, down, up, down…at sometimes dizzying speeds.

    Mike DeArmond…
once again showcases his minimal knowledge of football, but he sure can throw grenades at opposing teams fans like a pro. Comparing Tech’s QB situation and how "they changed QB’s when they needed to" is just plain stupid. Tech has operated this way for going on 2 years now with Sticks and Taylor Potts. Misery on the other hand has, what’s supposed to be or was billed as, a potential Heisman contender, the face of your program, and a sure fire first round pick in Blaine Gabbert. So, just like Tech, because you know, they adjusted and went with a different QB, Misery is supposed to bench their golden boy for a little used back up???? Fine, I’ll let Mike have that one, but the situation is no comparison to Tech’s at all.

Personally, I think Gabby is still feeling the effect of the Nebraska game.

    Relax Mizzoufan
KState is due for Coffman to take over and try to run the ball or Klein will try to pass the ball like crazy or some oddity. College football is up and down every year…but this year more than usual. Nebraska should have lost to Iowa State. Kansas should not have come back against CU. KState shouldn’t have shellacked Texas. Such things happen in college football.

BUT DO NOT FAIL MY FANS AND DISCIPLES…

    JOJO….YES…JOJO THE KING WAS RIGHT.
mu IS Jinxed. They can’twin 2 big games in a row. Never did..never will.
So stop trying to change the 50 years of history thats been the
achilles heel of every mu fan. its not meant to happen.
And yost needs to get better. Gabbert hasn’t thrown the long ball.
Use short crips 10-15 yard pass plays…bubble passes…short routes
because thats all gabbert is good for.
Watch tape…watch the stats…even the SDSU play was a short pass that
the reeceiver turned into a td.
Hopefully mu wins out and finishes in top 10 bcs standing…because this
was a transition year…but wait…next year should be bcs champs!

  7. MoCrash says:

    Gabbert not pro stuff
I’ve never been convinced Gabbert is a legitimate pro prospect, although he came from my old high school and I am therefore naturally predisposed to wish for his success. I see him as a Matt Cassel type; a guy who won’t kill you with turnovers, but isn’t a playmaker. He reads defenses poorly and, while he has a strong arm, is not consistently accurate … What Missouri has demonstrated more than anything, especially in the Nebraska game, is that it does not have a championship-level defense, stats not withstanding. Great defenses pick up the slack from a slumping offense; the Tigers’ didn’t do that the last two weeks.
