KC Star sports columnist Sam Mellinger may not have made everyone forget the ghosts of Whitlock and Posnanski’s past. But he’s well on his way.
Take his recent blog dropping the hammer on the tired practice of shouting "Chiefs" at the end of the National Anthem.
Arguably worse than Christina Aguilera’s Super Bowl snafu Sunday.
"If there’s a good reason to scream CHIEFS!!! at the end of the anthem, please let me know," the headline reads.
"What’s the point, really?" Mellinger begins. "Is it just something stupid that kids in college do that are hilarious to them and stupid to most of the rest of us? Is it rebellious? Is there an inside joke I’m not in on? Are Kansas basketball fans just REALLY big Chiefs fans?"
The practice having reached embarrassingly epidemic proportions, who better to weigh in than hit man Tony Botello?
"I’ve never done it," Botello says.."Because that is the most cornbread, backwoods, cowtown thing to do. It’s like high school. Like wearing your letter jacket after you get out of high school."
Not that Botello’s a raging patriot…
"It’s not out of respect for the troops or anything," he explains. "I’ve just never been much of a joiner. And it’s a hokey thing anyway because it’s a tribute to the corporate sports thing."
For Chiefs fans who can’t resist the practice – even at Comets, Sporting KC or Mavericks games – at least try and observe proper etiquette.
"You know, if you’re dating a big, fat blonde girl from Independence and she’s really into the Chiefs, then it’s OK to do it," Botello says.
The bottom line:
"It’s just one of the many things people do at Chiefs games that point them out as Gomers," Botello says. "Like they wear Chiefs jerseys with overalls over them. Or those stupid Chiefs flags. And fat women wearing the Chiefs jersey – like no one knows they’re fat."

What’s the big deal? There is nothing disrespectful about saying “and the home of the…. CHIEFS!” Those that don’t like this cheer are generally elitist snobs.

Mellinger’s blog post was about folks screaming “CHIEFS” at the end of the national anthem BEFORE THE KU-MU BASKETBALL GAME AT ALLEN FIELD HOUSE!
Good grief, folks. He clearly says that while he finds the practice silly at Arrowhead, at least he understands it. After all, fans are at a Chiefs’ game for criminy sakes!
He asks what the sense is in screaming it at a basketball game, and you take issue with that? Oh my!
KU is KC
Regarding hearing Chiefs chants at KU games, The University of Kansas is in large part Kansas City’s University. It is similar to the relationship New Orleans has with LSU, or Green Bay has with the Badgers. I would not be surprised to see Cheeseheads at a game in Madison, or to see Who Dat Nation in Baton Rouge. After years of telling the KC crowd that the Tomahawk Chop is/isn’t a proper chant, the “Home of the CHIEFS” call has endured. So what?

Wrong, Casey. Students at Mizzou do it too. I’ve never been there, but I’ll be you hear it at the Independence Events Center. Hell, I’ll bet you hear it at KC area high school games. It’s not just a KU thing. You need to get out more.

Sorry folks, didn’t know that they did the chant at Mizzou games too – I only subscribe to the basic ESPN package so I miss most Missouri games. But if they do the chant there too, and at high school games, that’s fine, and I certainly don’t think it qualifies as a “tired” practice.
