Got a lot of response to my story about price gouging downtown during the Big 12 Tourney.
Most people agreed that parking prices up to $30 by opportunistic lot operators. were outrageous. Others thought I was a cheapskate and should have just ponied up the bucks no matter how bad it might look to visitors to KC.
But not to worry, the Slyster– new mayor Sly James — will surely look into it.
Which brings me to another matter; how Kansas City stacks up in terms of daily expenses for visitors and out-of-town business people compared to other cities.
And Business Travel News has just released its 2011 corporate travel index with the daily costs of doing business in the top 100 domestic and international cities.
As you might guess, New York takes top honors as America’s most expensive city with a per diem of $536.79. Broken out that’s an average of $343.22 for the hotel room, $85.69 for a rental car (who rents in the Big Apple?) and $107.69 for food.
Rounding out America’s five most expensive cities are Washington, DC with its per diem of $460.72, Boston at $408.81, San Francisco at $396.03 and White Plains, NY at $380.60.
So how did K.C. rank?
We’re # 45 with the average business visitor forking out $137.37 for a hotel room, $55.26 for car rental and $80.57 for food.
Putting Kansas City’s 2011 per diem at a comparatively paltry $273.20.
Similar mid-sized markets offering better daily expense deals include San Antonio at $272.54, St. Louis at $261.60, Memphis at $254.92, Knoxville at $249.27 and Dayton at $236.82.
Those taxes Kay Barnes and Steve Glorioso slapped on hotel rooms and rental cars add up, don’t they?
The most reasonable city ranked in the top 100: Akron, Ohio with a per diem of $225.09.
Internationally Geneva, Switzerland is the world’s most expensive city to conduct business in with a per diem of $526.00. Followed by Oslo at $525.00, Tokyo at $516.00, Stavanger, Norway at $512.00 and Sydney at $504.00.
Most reasonable top 100 world city?
Guatemala City at No. 100 with a per diem of only $183.00.

Looks to me like we’re right where we belong. Number 45 is liveable. I know how they can cut down that $137 hotel cost. Put’em up in $35 Riverside or Raytown motel. They must have included Johnson County in their pricing.
