I’ll readily admit my skepticism when it came to the remaking of the 1981 hit comedy Arthur…
Especially with Russell Brand in actor Dudley Moore’s classic role. But I’m here to tell you that the 2011 version of Arthur got it right!
If you’ve never seen the original: GREAT! You’re in for a highly entertaining, heartwarming night at the movies.
For those of you with fond memories of Dudley Moore as the spoiled and always tipsy millionaire, I suggest you block it out of your mind and consider this new version NOT as a remake but a re-imagining of the 30 year old comedy.
The storyline still has all the basics. Russell Brand as Arthur Bach, the colossally wealthy heir to the fortunes of the family’s investment firm run by his mother. He’s also an alcoholic, ueber-playboy and unemployable, immature slacker who still lives with his nanny Helen Mirren who tries hard to keep him out of trouble. DAILY!
But when Arthur’s ongoing shenanigans threaten the profitability of the family firm, mommie dearest decides it’s high time for him to get hitched. And not just to anyone, but to social bitch and wealth seekerm Jennifer Garner, the daughter of construction titan Nick Nolte.
That’s when Arthus accidentially meets quirky New York City tour guide and poverty stricken children’s book author Naomi played by newcomer Greta Gerwig.
Leaving Arthur smitten for good.
Of course mom will have none of it with grand nupitals to Garner proceeding against Arthur’s wishes. Her threat: to take away his complete inheritance and lavish lifestyle.
What WILL he do?
Take the most expensive risk of his life by dumping mom’s handpicked bride and lose his fortune by choosing love forever after with Naomi?
What would HEARNE….or dare I even suggest CRAIG GLAZER do?
I digress.
Suffice it to say, there’s a fairytale ending to all this. And Russell Brand, who also executive produced the movie, offers a credible performance here. It’s the kind of picture that keeps a smile on your face from beginning to end.
Why do I say that?
Because mine stayed that way throughout the film’s entire 1 hour and 50 minute running time. (And don’t even think botox here.)
I’m raising 3-1/2 out of 5 unconventional fingers for ARTHUR opening citywide.
Catch JACK GOES TO THE MOVIES on Radio: Friday mornings on KMBZ AM & FM and RADIO BACH, KC’s HD Classical station. Also Friday afternoons with Tanna on new 99.7-THE POINT.
I do believe you have it right jack
I have seen several different trailers on this and some talk show jabber and I think myself it is a good movie I am looking forward to seeing it.
The Chris Cross song was the best.
.
Look to the Star
Wow Jack, the Star gives it 1.5 and the majority of web chatter seems to suggest the movie is crap, like the majority of remakes.
I realize yours is a subjective opinion but you can’t begin to compare Dudley and Liza to Russell and Greta.
Russell Brand is Amy Winehouse with better hair, bigger breasts, better teeth and less talent.
To Smartman
….Yes I can. and I did.
As to the STAR giving it 1.5—there’s is out of 4. Mine is out of 5 and takes the preview audience’s enjoyment into account as well.
Incidentially USA TODAY gave it 2 out of 4.
I’ll bet it’ll be # 1 at the boxoffice this weekend!!!! Want to take that wager?
Looks like the kiddies and animation will rule the weekend.
ps
If ever there was an example of the faust tale, it is Brand, the guy is just scary to look at, full of himself, and ….. you know the deal.
