Hearne: Calling All Sports, KC Confidential Wants You!

Yeah, you…

Well, maybe. We’re looking for a few inspired folks. Starting with – big surprise – a sportswriter. Someone with some grit and edge and attitude. Somebody looking for a low-seven-figure income (kidding). Better yet, someone so consumed by an all-fired passion for sports he or she would be insulted to be offered any kind of money (kinda not kidding, but okay, still kidding).

Are you more prolific than Greg Hall? Cleaner cut than Craig Glazer? As good a writer as Caitlin Donnelly? Less tempermental than Mike Hendricks (I know, I know – how come I haven’t called)? Smarter than me (shouldn’t take much)?

Then let’s talk….

Or maybe you have an idea for a blog or a column or photo presentation

Star-bashers and bimbo blasters need not apply, we’ve got those bases pretty well covered, right?

    Interesting.
I was wondering what happend to Hall. I guess he got tired of this gig/burned another bridge in the Kansas City media.

    Halls Balls
First of all Mongo Props to Gregger for his stint at KCC. Love him or hate him he’s a class act. Ran the damn Boston Marathon with bloody nipples at an age when most of us are at the Scooter Store instead of Aristocrat Motors. How many of us could do that? Yeah, Glazer we know you can bench 300 lbs BFD. I did that when I was 17 without roids. Can still do it, without roids or HGH, not that hard, more about technique than brute strength. You’re just a regular Karch Kirally.

And harley, yeah you’re so powerful you can make a rock so heavy that even you can’t lift it. You’re not in Greg’s class much less the same school district. I think I might have walked by you at Jazzoo. Either your Hai Karate is bad or you need to change your diaper more often.

To you Greg Hall, God Bless You and grant you Peace, Love, Happiness and Health. Enjoy your life, your wife and your family. It will be different without you. It will NEVER be the same. The only constant in life is change. Sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse but change nonetheless.

    Pot, Meet Kettle
    Let’s see here:

The KC Star won’t write about their layoffs (or mention them online). And Jr. here won’t discuss why Greg Hall has apparently left.

    I get it now.

  4. Rainbow Man says:

    Evaluation Time Hearnia
Okay… I am not sure you lost Hall or not. He had a bright light shining on him during the Splittorff death so maybe someone picked him up during that 15 minutes. Either way… Hall is damned good.

I really love KC Con and I check it almost every day. You need to make some changes Hearne.

    1. Glazer… Don’t change anything.
    2. Ulrich… Painful to read. The humor is like obvious jokes your grandma told. I am almost embarrassed for Kelly.
    3. Janesko… She needs to be utilized more… But she needs to get edgier… Cover restaurant politics and gossip… not just the food. We have a cast of characters in KC that happen to be in that business. Maybe she can’t handle that part because she would have to piss some people off.
    4. Someone needs to cover the bar scene… I mean… someone needs to take a 45 degree angle dive into them.
    5. Talk about KC Mafia more… yes… the real one.
    6. Dig into Mission Hills… people LOVE Ward Parkway dirt.
    7. Post more… that is on you Hearne. Hall, Glazer, and yourself get the most posts. I have to admit… you put up some interesting writing.
    8. Cover the burbs a little bit.
    9. Stay controversial.. We need more Brian Euston types of stories… less Fiat.

Either way… hope you find your sports hack… Keep up the good work… I know I am personally responsible for getting at least 20 people to hit this page.

  5. Super Dave says:

    Just Maybe?
Maybe Greg wanted it that way and then again is it really important why Greg isn’t here?

Plus TIAD since you are more or less a busy body sounding type person, this is a free site owned by Mr. Hearne who can do WTF he wants with it and since it don’t cost you a thing live with it.

Now if you was a paying subscriber and had a long term agreement to receive stories and news from this site then just maybe you might have a right to know something but then again it still might just plain and simple be a NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS ISSUE.

I am sure in fact I am very sure that if Greg had wanted to tell us why he was leaving Hearne would have allowed him to write a fare well story. But it appears that Greg didn’t so hey we may never know what happened and if Greg asked Hearne to respect his leaving and not go public with why I am figuring Hearne would respect that as well.

Now if Greg goes somewhere else and says naughty things about KCC then I am guessing all bets if any are off.

But The Star I’m sure has nothing or has any bearing on anything done here so please don’t go there. Then again who knows but does it really matter?

So Greg is gone I wish him the best in what ever he may or may not do next and can say only that thanks and was fun while it lasted.

  6. renton says:

    Ch-ching
Greg would like to get paid for his work. He wasn’t, so he left.

  7. Hearne Christopher says:

    TIAD, TIAD, TIAD….

Props to Super Dave for providing a little perspective. I actually have left a couple comments to people. Saw Greg’s Tweet earlier:

“Looking for a new home for my OTC column. My time at KCC was fun but I want more…as in money.”

    What, you missed it?

  8. Hearne Christopher says:

Always evaluating, thanks for your suggestions.

Trying to simplify, truth be told. Less time chasing writers to post and less editing time equals more time for me to report and write per your other suggestions.

  9. Hearne Christopher says:

This is an example of a clueless comment. Sometimes I delete clueless comments, just because they’re so clueless. However, Greg was paid and by far the highest paid on the site.

But four figures, not five, not six and not seven.

  10. Hearne Christopher says:

Thanks, Cliffy. Four figures is getting paid. Greg and his spouse have full time jobs and live an upper middle class lifestyle. And 10 cents is more “not getting paid” – clue in.

If you want to characterize Greg’s contribution as a hobby, you’re welcome to. I will agree with you – and unlike you, I know what I’m talking about – that it was a part time job.

  11. Super Dave says:

    WOW
Only 500 for 1500 man sucks to be them.

  12. Hearne Christopher says:

You talking about Whitlock? Lot’s more people get $7 or so an hour and those are part time jobs as well.

The Star doesn’t pay the figure you cite to freelancers – not even close – so your point is?

I’ll say it for you, incorrect. Greg was getting paid; he says he wants more. Fair enough. Why don’t you hook him up with one of your $500 a week deals and make an honest man out of him.

  13. Hearne Christopher says:

Dave, when the Star tried to hire me back to freelance the column in January of 2009, the top dollar was going to be $300 per column. The editor told me she would see if she could get that bumped up some.

And that was mainly because the column was highly read and they were wiping six-figures and change off the books.

  14. Super Dave says:

    I Know Hearne
I was just trying to be semi funny I know writing does not pay like it use to and in fact many things don’t.

Outside of Dare and maybe even he isn’t anymore but radio dj’s all over the United States are taking huge cuts in pay and doing the style of radio they don’t really want to be doing but it’s that or off the air for good. Some listeners gripe and moan that the dj’s are not funny anymore well for the most part they have little to be funny about. In short their life semi sucks and it looks in a lot of ways to get worse.

Maybe Hearne you should work on writing a book a maybe tell all on how getting the story out is hard to do with little rewards and how life as a writer use to be. seem the only ones making money writing are those who do book deals and not all of them get rich either. I feel for you and a lot of media people now days who devoted a whole life to doing something and now struggle to make enough money a week to get a tank of gas each week at Quick Trip.

  15. chuck says:

So I just read teh Bottom Line Communications
    article on Greg Hall.

Then went and checked out Greg’s columns again over the last month or two.

I think he is great, love the format, and his opinions are usually spot on and incisive.

    So fuckin what?

    This ain’t “War and Peace”.

Jesus, you could go on 610 and 810’s sites, listen to the podcasts, review writers locally and from all over the country, quote them, work on your ideas (Contrast and comparrisonn) and bang it out.

Hearne, just flat out steal the idea.

Don’t make any excuses, do the same thing and even include quotes from Hall.

    Flattery and all that, right?

You could pull this off no sweat with a ghost writer.

You could do it with sports you don’t know jack about (Pun intended).

    ZZZZzzzzzz

    JMO.

  16. Robertoe says:

Bottom Link url to the Greg Hall departure
Hearne, this should automatically hotlink. Very simple. You should not have emulated the f ‘ed up Star and custom coded your platform here. Wrong approach. You should have bought a pre-coded professional one.

  17. harley says:

hall not worth even 3 figures…
sorry…his style gets old. And he may have broke the splitt story but anyone who saw or heard the
guy knew he was very ill…not a big big story unless you’ve never watched a royals game in the
    last 10 years.
so he’s gone and based on my identification with this site…my fans and disciples and readers who
pore thru every word that i write….my predictions which have been extraordinary in my strong ability
to analyze and predict outcomes and strategy (remember i predicted ku out in elite eight…)
that i would be the person to take over for hall’s columns.
However those shoes are so small and trivial that have been left behind that I feel that at this time
I must continue to focus on other more profitable ventures that I have going and building my
business that is already very successful.
So hearne…thanks for the offer but I don’t have th e time nor the aspiration to be a writer on
a small website becuase then i wuould have to post comments on my own stories~!
Thanks…good luck in your search and hope things work out for your business in the future.
To all my fans and readers: I will continue to offer the best in sports and business and
world analysis as a commenter so stay tuned for more of the best in writing from me and
    my employees. thanks

  18. Hearne Christopher says:

    Uh, you’re welcome

  19. chuck says:

    Chutzpah, thy name is Harley
    🙂

  20. BS says:

    meh
You could train a monkey to do what Hall did- listen to the radio, pull some quotes and comment.

That being said, it was the most interesting column on this site. I can un-bookmark it now.

  21. Robertoe says:

Grandiose! a legend in his own mind!
Harley: “my fans and disciples and readers who
pore thru every word that i write….my predictions which have been extraordinary in my strong ability
to analyze and predict outcomes and strategy….”

    Hilarious!

Remember all: He doesn’t have time to post here!

Come on Hearne. Sweeten that Harley offer!

  22. Hearne Christopher says:

If you wanna help underwrite the deal, I’ll bump it to seven figures but he has to suppy his own spell checker and proof reader.
