Step aside senior citizens and middle age haters, Nick Wright has done the unthinkable. He really has beaten WHB superstar Kevin Kietzman. And not via the aid of fuzzy math or the Kansas City Royals. The lowly Kansas City Royals, I might add.
Nope, we’re talking the real deal this time out. Check it.
In men, ages 25 to 54, Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wright had the right stuff.
Wright’s show on 610 Sports squeaked past Kietzman’s by a tenth of a point with a 6.8 share to KK’s 6.7.
Wright’s take on his big win?

Say what you will about the Royals night and weekend games. Clearly they distort the 6-plus Arbitron numbers available to the public which measure Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight. But even in men, ages 25 to 54, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., 610 Sports narrowed the overall gap significantly with a 4.9 share to WHB’s 5.8.
The bottom line: There may not be any talent raids or body bags just yet, but maybe – just maybe – there is something to this sports radio war.
And maybe it’s time for long-in-the-tooth sports radio media soothsayers and listeners to swallow their spite and admit that Wright is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the local scene…

I love this sports war. It used to be a slaughter with 810 kicking 610’s ass. But now it’s much closer and much more interesting. I like the fact that they are going right after Keitzman. I think it’s ironic that the 610 more youthful staff is doing to 810 what 810 did to Don to Fortune. I also think it’s a very smart strategy on Entercom’s part to use the Royals broadcasts( at least in the begining of the season)
to drive listeners to the station and then attempt to keep them for their regular programming with a younger, edgie staff and on air demeanor.
It will be interesting to see if WHB fights back or drops into their usual arrogant pompas denial.

Enough with the WAR BULLSHIT. In WAR real men and women actually DIE. So STFU about WAR and show some RESPECT to men and women that CHOOSE to serve and know what WAR is.
Landing one punch in a 12 round fight is not a TKO, KO or THE DECISION.

But I still think that the numbers are more indicative of what people think of KK than what NW is doing. He is still annoying, but nowadays not as annoying as talking Cookies, Golf, or what frank did over the weekend

Nick is the so called David Letterman to Jay Leno…or better yet, Chelsea Handler to both. He is the new vibe. It’s over Wright soon will be way out front of KK and Soren. Age and energy with his young posse have won the battle. Maybe having the lowly Royals is a curse not a blessing. THEY HAVE TO COVER THE LOSERS EVERY DAY, CHRIST. You think those young guys like talking about a team with NOTHING, except maybe, maybe a budding star in Hosmer, maybe only. Wow thats fun. They know the Royals will NEVER LIKELY BE ANYTHING, next year LAST AGAIN.
Chiefs more fun, but still, uh, not there yet. Its a tough job, Nick does a nice piece of “heres something fun to talk about” each day.
Throw in Whitlock, WALA…fun stuff.

WHB….not listening to their audience/customers
we all knew that radio went thru a tough tough economic period. revenues were down as
much as 30% and more. When you have so many owners it’s even togher because the heat
on the management becomes even greater to produce revenue.
WHB just needed money. I imagine they have a big overhead and have to pay off
some loans. So they did everything possible to generate cash and keep the stationafloat.
Thats not unlike other businesses. Glaze’s business needs a shot so he put a great coupon on
groupon. It’s just smart business to generate business.
WHB made a crucial mistake by turning the station into a infomercial for sausages/weber grills/
diet cookies/ etc and not keeping the lineup and content fresh.
but during the last 4 or 5 months theres really been nothing to talk about. NO bball/no big 12
turmoil/royals hurting….there’s no content or subjects to really bring in the audience.
Talk radio on the other hand has had lots to discuss….the debt debate/eetc. so listeners
are driven to that.
Hopefully kk and crew will do a few changes to be their ship straightened out. Maybe add in a
really controversial on air guy……and shake up the market.
Every company goes thru this…complacency and sometimes inability to make changes that
enhance the product.
WHB will have to make some changes. or they will have to give up their #1 ranking in sports talk in kc.
they may have gotten out of touch with the audience….but within 30 days thye could really
get their energy back.
Talk stations are driven by content. right now there’s nothing to discuss and people are finding
alteranatives. Lets see what happens when football starts in severa lweeks…it could turn on a
dime.
The people at whb are great people. Smart…but they got lazy and lost the energy that made them
a great sports talk station. They need some new blood…need to reprogram the content…need to
hit the streets evey day to meet and greet their audience….bring in some former players for a
show that is not just about sports but their lifestyles (hey maybe bill maas telling about his
past life)….its not just about sports…its the lifestyle that sports is about…
geet creative….they still have a huge audience and they need to just get off their ass and stop
resting on laurels.
