Been awhile since the days of the once popular popular cop-buddy comedies…
Arguably the top of the line date back to “48 HOURS”, “LETHAL WEAPON” and the “BEVERLY HILLS COP” series.
Well, there’s a new one in the genre opening this weekend.
The main difference being its enhanced dose of visual violence—hence a strong R-rating.
(The ratings board’s extension warns: “violence and language throughout, some sexual references and brief graphic nudity.”)
“STUBER” is set in present day Los Angeles where grizzled undercover cop Dave Bautista gets a hot tip on a big drug delivery about to go down.
There’s just one problem!
It all happens immediately following his Lasik eye surgery when things are still fuzzy and stimulation is highly discouraged!
NOW WHAT?
Bautista engages mild-mannered Uber driver Kumail Nanjiani to get him TO the scene and get involved against the bad guys whether he likes it or not.
The action-comedy affair is peppered with funny lines throughout its relatively short running time of just an hour and a half.
Nanjiani, of course, comes on the heels of his recent breakthrough movie “THE BIG SICK.” Bautista comes from the world of WWE pro-wrestling and his Drax character in “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY” and “AVENGERS: ENDGAME”.
Together they show off a good amount of chemistry that makes “STUBER” a fun night at the movies—explicit violent scenes and all.
Isn’t it about time for an Uber-based rideshare, action comedy?
The answer apparently is YES!
